everything needs updates

thoughts on how all software has a mandatory update that does nothing except make it worse and you have to download it bi-monthly. what are the esoteric implications of this also & should i switch from windows to linux
Lee Goldson · 2024-06-02 03:23
Frustrating. My laptop runs slower and slower with subsequent updates. I need my laptop. I need it.
Lost Bullet · 2024-06-02 03:25
I swear this is too common with modern video games, imagine being excited to play a video game you like and it's going through ANOTHER update, that's me with Fortnite.
scientologist · 2024-06-02 03:27

With games its more the size of updates rather than the frequency. Im just pissed off about having to install an update for windows that does absolutely nothing twice a month
Netrunner · 2024-06-02 03:28
Switch to whatever you want man. I think Mutahar discusses in depth in his podcast with the boys. Nothing exciting but also not boring to say the least

Armitage · 2024-06-02 03:35
on Linux you can revert updates and also lock software from being updated again. with APT the commands are apt list -a [package name] . apt install [package name]=[version number] and apt-mark hold [package name] . with Flatpak you can use the flatpak mask command. also most of your software will be connected to a repository that updates everything once you run apt upgrade , or you can configure it to do it automatically. food for thought, maybe you should switch
Tyrell Wellick · 2024-06-02 03:37
My friend in Columbus, Ohio knows a lot about this. He says tech companies are intentionally doing this so that customers can go their tech support and pay lots of money for this. It’s a cycle.

You guys all suck. The updates aren’t even that bad.
XERXES · 2024-06-02 03:43
Updates should not occur unless for retaining compatibility and patching security issues with the occasional extension of features but even then a stable version of software should be able to be stand alone.
Currently updates are just a way to open the door for the cancer that is the spyware in modern OSes. The alternative is to not update at all and keep yourself vulnerable to legitimate security holes.
Let's hope popularity of linux based systems keeps increasing and avoid getting soykaftified.

I switched from Windows to Ubuntu about 2 years ago and never looked back. I would recommend Ubuntu because it's the most popular distro and has the most support, but a large percent of the userbase are businesses running servers and Indians. Since it's geared toward servers there are a few annoying things you'll have to get over at first but if you want to skip all that you can try Linux Mint, but there will be slightly less support - by support I mean results on Google with the same questions you have, quickness of people replying, etc.

it's because non-hapas can't code. they use retarded techniques like C, composing syntax with string interpolation, doing crypto when you can't even code yet, dumbass serialization methods, retarded platforms like the web. everything constantly needs updates to address teh latest way in which they discovered their code is broken.
Rick Deckard · 2024-06-03 03:59
^that is the security justification. and since these security updates are shoved into the gayshit updates (like adding more animations and phonehomes to firefox), you're forced to get the latest gayshit or else be exposed to code which they discovered is broken which has published info saying how to exploit it.

Most people just click the 'later' button forever out of laziness until they get pwned. normal people don't know anything about software and why they really should do that update. It must actually be a tricky job as microsoft's update whatever leader trying to think of ways to force them to update without everyone getting all butthurt about it.

Mint is fine until you realize you have to deal with uppity forum mods who are the only ones that can solve your niche question. Ubuntu is still a major step up from Windows. You can always switch to something like Mint later

Linux Mint without hesitation. Desktop Environment is more similar to Windows than Ubuntu is. Be sure to get the Cinnamon edition if your pc can run it, otherwise just go for xfce.

it's especially fun when it comes to windows 10 and 11 where you have to change a group policy or if you're on home, a registry entry just so they don't spill the soykaf due to a faulty patch tuesday update or whatever other crap they didn't qa test enough.

I think there needs to be some sort of system where you can input the computer or setup you have and see if anyone had problems with an update so you can choose to skip it till you see no reported problems.

Facts don't care about your feelings.
>They're a victim of outsourcing and rapid industrialization, nothing more
India has a barbaric medieval caste system which condemns certain families to eternal poverty while others grow up with servants wiping their ass and putting away their toys for them. Such an inegalitarian and anti-meritocratic society breeds nothing but incompetence and nepotism. They are also viciously anti-rational with many superstitions revolving around things like cow urine and feces. Not to mention the literal rape culture. There are plenty of rational reasons to avoid Indians if you can. Especially the ones who speak English, they are the upper-castes who grew up with servants and will treat you like soykaf. If you work in tech then you know what I'm talking about.
>>77725
>I think you made a typo there. You can’t watch games. You can play games. No worries. English as a second language is challenging.
Modern cars, especially EVs do get constant software updates. Part of the reason is because software is so cheap, there is no need to finish all the features before release you can just do an update later. This also incentivized companies to push as much functionality into software as possible and more software means more updates. But software has bugs which also means more updates, especially if the device is safety critical and/or connected to the internet.

what you describe has been seen in all civilized societies that begin to industrialize. india's is especially apparent due to it's mass adoption of the internet. i'll use south korea as an example to prove indian is just another victim of history. they're very similar nations on a broad socioeconomic scale dating back centuries:
>India has a barbaric medieval caste system which condemns certain families to eternal poverty while others grow up with servants wiping their ass and putting away their toys for them.
see n-po generation, spoon class theory, and chaebol
>Such an inegalitarian and anti-meritocratic society breeds nothing but incompetence and nepotism.
see korean air nut rage scandal and the many suicides and impeachments of ceos, celebrities, and high level officials (including presidents) over corruption, rape, etc.
>They are also viciously anti-rational with many superstitions revolving around things like cow urine and feces.
sounds like basic bitch racism desu
>Not to mention the literal rape culture.
south korea's rate of rape per 100K people in 2010: 95.9
india's rate of rate rape per 100K people in 2010: 0.45
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_statistics)
regardless, south korea also has a horrendous rape culture; see the various first hand accounts on youtube.
>There are plenty of rational reasons to avoid Indians if you can. Especially the ones who speak English, they are the upper-castes who grew up with servants and will treat you like soykaf.
i see your point since many south korean women refuse to date mainland men due to the brutal gender dynamics, but to equate a subcontinent of 1.3b people, of whom are made up of many ethnic groups of many environments to being stupid and evil, is a conclusion only a troglodyte could come to.
>If you work in tech then you know what I'm talking about.
i live in a very wealthy part of a world class city, and have had many americans treat me as you describe. i believe this is a universal issue when one enters the leisure class.

There's nothing esoteric about it. Updates need to happen to keep everything running properly with each other and fix security issues. As for things getting worse over time Linux is just as bad unless you take the time to really learn how it works.
