typing speed

this is something I know doesnt really have a huge deal on how well you do in IT or compsci, it's just something I wanna get good at. What's a good WPM benchmark to shoot for and what's your personal typing speed? thanks!(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)
Zhora · 2024-05-23 20:40
I just did a tester thing and got ~95wpm, never really trained, don't think it really matters, but I type a lot so idk.
Donna Hawthorne · 2024-05-23 21:28
I got 65wpm from typing dot com. It means nothing though.

100WPM with an accuracy of 95%. Your benchmarked speed will be a bit less than that since you're typing random words as they come up and not what you already have in mind, so see if you can consistently get 90-95WPM on 10fastfingers or something.
Also, use keybr.com for practicing accuracy (and only accuracy), type slowly there. If you don't already know touch-typing, go to typingclub.com

Holy crap op, fuarrrk you that picture scared the hell out of my tired ass.

basically the same here. by the way, why do you say only use keybr for accuracy? I do try to go a bit slower there now but I'd be interested to know why.
Anamika · 2024-05-23 22:00
170 wpm 10 words. 120-130 regular typing speed over longer periods of time.

lol, sorry fren. I have a habit of making these photoshops and sending them to my friends when I order something. It started when I got my new cpu this march and just progressed. I'll post some others if you want, I tried including some right now but lainchan said "flood detected"

Because I think typingclub.com absolutely is like kicking dead whales down the beach for enforcing accuracy, while being one of the best -- if not the best, method to learn the touch-typing itself.
keybr.com has far better accuracy tools. And, going slower will prevent you from developing bad habits and hitting a wall. You can still do quick bursts on 10fastfingers and your otherwise normal daily writing to get that last speed exercise.

jesus fuarrrking christ that is fast. You might not think so among tech enthusiasts, but among the average population, it's insane.

I see, thanks for that info. I've just been doing keybr the past few days because I started thinking about how fast I type randomly- the only thing I'm really doing during the day is studying for the first test of the comptia A+ and I dont really find gaming super super fun now so I started autistically typing a little bit. I guess I'll keep using keybr for accuracy and building correct muscle memory while using typingclub or 10fastfingers for speed :)

I've started to learn this alternative french/english keyboard layout https://ergol.org/
While I am much slower, it somehow feels much more comfortable. Do you know any other keyboard layouts that feel natural ?
Cypher · 2024-05-24 13:40
TypeRacer stats, using Programmer Dvorak on a variety of boards. Fastest race was on buckling springs (Model M 1391401). It’s convenient to be sure, but I’m still plateaued forever beneath the real elite tier of longhand typists like Sean Wrona who wake up and type >200 WPM before having any coffee, let alone competent machine stenographers.

stenographers are cheating. if you count them then you should count also videographers. a 24fps video, at a rate of a picture being worth a thousand words, gives you almost one and a half million wpm.
Rick Deckard · 2024-05-24 18:10
Got around 60wpm on a random site once, I have problems typing fast mainly because repeating keys on a $5 keyboard
isn't that good
Chani · 2024-06-19 04:38
fuarrrking goddamn dogshit. There was a thread discussing keyboards in depth, with pressure curves and whatever the heck. Of course I'll never find it now, because this site can't be PENETRATED from outside buy search engines and of course nobody the fuarrrk is going to implement search function on top of fuarrrking vichan.
So I got my hands on this
https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-6JH-00001-2GF6914-200-Keyboard/dp/B004SUILFO
and wow it feels so great. Really.

Wasn't this thread was it? The catalogue page sometimes gets archived for boards so just search through the archives if this isnt it.

I am sorry for hijacking the thread, but feel that this question doesn't warrant bumping an existing one out of the catalog.
Can anyone tell me if there's a term for keycaps with an Arial font letter positioned at the top left, like in pic rel? I've tried looking up everything I could think of, including "retro keyboard", "office keycap", "arial keycap", "old keycap", and many, MANY more tags.
I want to buy a keycap set with this style, but can only find sets with soykafty, girly fonts, or rounded garbage. And the keycaps that DO have this style cost an exorbitant amount ($40+)

Not sure why you are struggling. I see some cheap ones on Amazon, Aliexpress, and Temu just looking up retro, classic and minimalist. You also see this on some Japanese caps and Cyrillic caps where top left is Roman letters then lower right is their native characters. Buying from mechanical keyboard sites you are possibly getting inflated prices for a common style because the mechanical keyboard hobbyists.
