Chans on old hardware and OS

Cypher · 2024-03-30 12:11
I am getting OpenBSD running on an imac G3. However, the only browser that has *some* Javascript support is NetSurf. So I am looking to ask, what Chans and sites in general work without JS or limited JS. And what hardware, OS and browser did you use?
Y.T · 2024-03-30 12:24
Lainchan works on tb safest, 4chan does not due to cockflare. Dunno about others. Why did you make a thread instead of testing yourself?

>>76546 This was my test. And it worked!

See, if I start to give you links to nice niche anonymous communities on the internet, I would be doing them a disservice by attracting potentially bad actors into them. But then again, most of these actually good sites drive most dopamine fiends away because, in their own words, they are "too slow". They have a fair share of activity, but not enough to make most of the terminally online screen-adicts spitting in them. Still, I have found them gradually, and I am not going to curate a list of my favorite communities for imageboard users to go and insert their angloamerican electoral season flamewars.

Damn it, currently I got a huge hype about 90s SGI computers and IRIX, as well as an IBM PC, and HP-UX based station. Specially in all this order.

any of the sites running lynxchan

>>76545 Any other chans with people as mature/respectful as in here? Either imageboard or pure-text boards.
Dox · 2024-04-12 16:17
>>76676 I wouldn't say lainchan is really that mature/respectful. It attracts more and more people from 4chan /g/ and 8chan /tech/ and they are the opposite of respectful. There are a handful of niche communities and boards out there but it depends on what your looking for. If you just want a place to soykafpost and have fun that's very different to serious discussion. Letterbox is niche. /kind/ is good too but I heard it went down. /comfy/ moved when anoncafe went down. No idea where. There are a few active usenet groups that are really nice. If you want a beautiful community don't use a chan. Simple.
fsociety · 2024-04-12 17:09
>>76555 Could you please define this "too slow" pace for the communities you like? Just out of curiosity. F.e. I find it too much to follow more than one lainchan board and my RSS, and that's probably around 10 posts a day and like 2 meaningful articles from RSS.
Dujour · 2024-04-12 20:10
>>76678 /kind/ is on wapchan now
fsociety · 2024-04-13 22:25
So OpenBSD has a policy that real hardware compiles code. The real hardware for macppc is pretty dog slow for modern software. You'll probably see a lack of binary archives for weeks while everything compiles for 7.5. I would see if "GNOME Web" / Epiphany compiles on 7.4. That'll get you WebKit which is modern. It's under ports and says it'll compile for PowerPC so worth a shot.

Cloudflare is just going to make old browsers obsolete. It's sad how the majority of sites are now locked behind this one entity. Wish there was a good alternative to it.

Amazon actually works without JS. Brave Search and DuckDuckGo Lite give a decent experience. A lot of sites partially work without JS. This is an archive.org search engine that can work without it, because their search is completely broken on the lite version of their site. The actual entries pages work though: https://balbach.net/cgi-bin/iacs.awk I'm sure there are many others, but I don't know what you're into. Wikipedia works nicely, I just remembered

I hate Cloudflare, and I like to avoid JS when I can. I bump in regards to more good chans like Lainchan that can be visited through a Tor connection, without Cloudflare challenges or JS. I'm also wondering if anyone knows any good torrent sites where I can grab magnet links that also follows these rules? I've been using TorrentGalaxy for a while but they added a ridiculous "checkpoint" basically every time I visit a new page. Looking for something for Western movies and TV. Nyaa and this other smaller one TokyoToshokan seem good for anything Eastern.

>>78994 >This is going to be slightly off topic but related And straight away I can say thank you for posting that, as it reminded me that I curb scored one of those a few years ago. Stashed it away with some other old hardware and had no practical use for it, until now.
Neuromancer · 2024-07-28 14:01
>>78998 Glad someone can use it. I had recalled some Lainon asking about it before but i dont recall which board or the thread must have been bumped off. The slot load and tray ones it is slightly different process. Tray load model was simpler apparently.

>>76545 iirc you can upgrade the g3 with a g4 processor which could unlock some software options

Picochan would work without JS... >https://github.com/neeshy/picochan but too bad nobody hosts it...

OP do you know how to program? You could possibly port TenFourFox over to OpenBSD or just use some of it's code in the already ported Firefox ESR (since newer features may not be able to work) and then fill in the missing security updates if you don't want to take the hardware modification route I suggested earlier.

>>76679 >Could you please define this "too slow" pace for the communities you like? 'Too slow' is anything slower than a chat room.

>>80071 Not to detract from your broader point but reddit is at least viewable from Tor, even if it isn't from VPN.
Dujour · 2024-10-28 04:02
>>80070 > literally everyone who's ever used a chan "comes from 4chan" except like ~20 japanese people I've never posted on it. I came from elsewhere.

>Old Hardware Yes. >Old OS Why? It doesn't make any sense to use an old OS when you can use an up to date one, heck, you can even make it look like the old one, but it doesn't make any sense to expose an old OS to the internet
The Phantom Phreak · 2024-12-10 15:52
>>82302 Some programs people use dont work on newer OS's pr don't work optimally. Also collectors of retro computers sometimes like to just keep the computer as it was
