Tech Questions #13 Old Thread: >>73499 Ask your simple questions in this thread. You will get replies more likely if you use this thread because many posters regularly visit this thread. I will start. I'm thinking about buying Acer Aspire 5 (the one that has AMD Ryzen 5 5625U). Does Acer make good laptops? I'm a bit hesitant to buy it because Acer has weird UEFI firmware that requires you to press ctrl+s to get full settings.
Jean Dupont · 2024-03-26 18:15
I've had my current acer laptop for 6 years and I'm quite content with it. I had several driver issues during the first ~2 years though, so you might need to be careful about which distro you choose. I very rarely needs to mess with the UEFI settings to be honest.

Nobody special · 2024-03-27 14:02
>>76483 My guess is that a reboot should go normally and everything should work as usual. After all, every time you shut down your system, the encrypted volumes are unmounted and closed. So your doing it accidentally prematurely shouldn't cause a problem. In fact, I'd reboot immediatedly because the system might have problems without those volumes available. Or if you know the pasphrases you can just open and mount them manually without rebooting, using cryptsetup commands.

Why do members of the hacker community never call things "gаy" when its a common part of English speech and has been for many decades? even if you look at posts from 80s and earlier, they will not use the word even once. Are hacker community members just of higher caliber, and "gаy" is just peasant vernacular, or are they not allowed to say it, or are they all democrat voters?

So I have a Quadro P series and specifically have a need for the supported stereoscopic 3D that these cards support... any later Quadros stopped with Syereo 3D support and the sync port! To support Stereo 3D I have to run older drivers, the latest version quadro driver to support stereo 3D is 452.06.... Thing is to run LLMs I need newer drives specifically CUDA... If I upgrade to latest Nvidia I loose support for Stereo 3D! To try and get around this I installed the latest CUDA development environment hoping that might update CUDA to work, but it has not helped me. Idealy I want the latest NVIDIA drivers but with rolled in support for Stereo 3D.... I have a standalone Stereo installer from time ago that adds stereo to older driver versions, but not to newer ones.... Does anyone think there is a way to roll this stereo driver into the latest drives? Forcing it in there? IF so how would I go about starting such a mission? Any ideas or hold appreciated Lains!

2. these people who call themselves "hacker, not a cracker" should be referred to as [bold: trаnnies]. Elliot Alderson · 2024-04-02 17:50
but after a long time i realized these SJWs i hated since the 90s can be perfectly described this way, i always was looking for a word for it. these people who are two or more of: fat, balding, autistic, bum. who work on some inane pet project like ollydbg but of far worse quality. a game mod, an XML library, etc. little autistic goblins that toil away at their craft and form a community around it. coupled with this obnoxious high horse behavior where they ban you for doing a wrong, like calling something "gay". thats all they are, a tranny. they should be shunned into oblivion and never talked about again. if anyone brings them up i will say "oh, that tranny" and change the subject. them objecting to using tranny as an insult just further highlights their absrudity. they value legal punishments that as a false positive effect thousands of innocent people. yet they will complain that mere thousands (that is the likely number of genuine people with this rare genetic mutation) of people in total would be insulted by someone else being called a "glitterboy" or "tranny"

pls help me understand how fonts work I installed Manjaro on my PC, the i3 image. I want to use the Cozette font, so I installed it's AUR package through yay. The installation seemingly went fine. The cozette.otb file is where it's supposed to be (/usr/share/fonts/misc), but the font doesn't seem to be installed correctly. It doesn't appear as selectable for gtk or qt applications, and it doesn't appear listed when running fc-list (what I run is: $ fc-list Cozette ). I've tried running fc-cache -v to make sure that fontconfig is looking in the right folders for the cozette.otb file, and sure enough it appears to do so. Among the directories returned by fc-cache -v is /usr/share/fonts/misc which where yay installs the font. Just to make sure though I copied the cozette.otb file to /home/me/.local/share/fonts. When running fc-cache -v the full entry for that directory is /home/me/.local/share/fonts: skipping, existing cache is valid: 1 fonts, 1 dirs . So that means that fontconfig is correctly recognizing the Cozette font in /usr/share/fonts/misc presumably. I thought maybe the font file is fuarrrked in some way but running fc-scan on it returns normal output as far as I can tell. I don't know what could be the problem. Digging around ancient forum posts people suggest making sure that the fontpath in xorg.conf does actually contain the directory where the font is, but Xorg doesn't use xorg.conf anymore. Instead the Xorg has several configuration files tucked in some root folder none of which has anything regarding a fontpath.

Actually it does. Xorg is just able to automatically configure itself these days. It used to be so that you had to always write a xorg.conf. Now you can just put small config files (that contain only the config options you need) in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/42_something.conf (foobar.conf.d directories always work like that). You should look where and how font packages in official repos install stuff. Sorry, I can't help much since I have never needed to install fonts on my own. All fonts I want to use are already properly packaged. >>76711 If you are looking for a lightweight LiveCD, you should look into Puppy Linux or SystemRescueCD. But if you want a distro that doesn't come with a lot of things preinstalled, you can install Void Linux, Arch Linux (or Artix), Gentoo or (especially) Alpine Linux. Void Linux and Alpine Linux both have an installer while Arch/Artix and Gentoo do not (instead they provide wiki page that has installation instructions). These distros have been made for power users and they don't install much by default (not even a basic GUI). But you can very easily install everything you need with the package manager. Here is an example post-install script for Void Linux: https://dpaste.org/MWC8b Note that you need to enable the services, for example: # this only works on a running system! # consult the Void Linux Handbook for details! # be sure to rm dhcpcd and wpa_supplicant symlinks (and similar) from /var/service first! sudo ln -s /etc/sv/NetworkManager /var/service/ # equivalent of systemctl enable NetworkManager sudo sv up NetworkManager # equivalent of systemctl start NetworkManager

not sure about void in particular but I agree with >>76786 for many distros IRC and forums are better info sources than official docs and wikis >>76714 thanks for the detailed answer, alpine and some arch flavors were nice, maybe my frustration comes from distro hopping hoping that something will arrive with my subjective definition of 'perfect' by default instead of sticking to something my idea was more like pre selecting the packages before install but I don't think any distro offers that so it probably leads into the whole LFS type of rabbit hole and ends up being the arch/gentoo case but in reverse

Been running an aging Asus B150M board for maybe 8 years or so. I initially ran Win7 then 10 up until about 1 year ago I put Debian on it and have been using it since for my daily. I've been pretty impressed with Debian's performance on this system which put off my idea about upgrading to a newer mobo. I'm guessing I could keep running this machine for another 5 years, but the CPU is an i5 6600 and getting old (bottlenecks the video). Lately I've been considering buying a newer board that supports faster memory and chip. But I want to make sure I get something somewhat future-proof and will last me as much time as this system I have now. I'm just not sure what I should look into as I haven't stayed up to date on current standards/technology for a bit. I have a smaller case with this microATX board, but I do have a full tower around that I could use if I went with a larger board. I'm thinking "if it's not broke, don't fix it" which is why I haven't thought about upgrading after all this time. Only upgrades I've made were GPU, memory increase and an audio card. Right now it works and I'm still satisfied. My only concern is some major change in the wired rendering my system incompatible to interconnect. But I don't think that will happen in the next 5 years, maybe in 20 years. Time will tell. So far, this machine has been a trooper.

>>77063 Yeah, it should usually go smoothly enough. I would try this first: - Install CUPS - Don't look for specific driver packages for your printer - Configure a static IP address on the printer (and set it as a DHCP reservation in wireless router) - Add the printer in Linux by IP address using LPD protocol - If you don't use a desktop environment with some printer manager/wizard, do it in the web interface of CUPS - When selecting from the list of drivers, try first "generic postscript" or "[manufacturer] -> generic postscript"

About a week ago I noticed that dig was suddenly making connections to opendns.com. I've never used dig before, why is this happening? Is it my VPN? Pic related is OpenSnitch. I tried pasting the command into the terminal (after allowing dig to make connections) and it doesn't even work, the parameters are out of order: /bin/dig +short +time 3 +retry 2 myip.opendns.com @resolver1.opendns.com I have one IP in my /etc/resolv.conf and I don't think it's that opendns site. I still have trouble fully understanding how DNS works. Why is this suddenly happening? Those denied commands in the pic were being run by root

Well well don't jump on me reformatting isn't needed, unless windows devs decided to divorce with reason completely, but point is you need to reinitialize it again so it shows up at least. or maybe you don't. maybe it doesn't show up because filesystem is not recognized and indeed it's maybe ext4 or whatever the fuarrrk they invented with their hybrid isos, i honestly never bothered to check. maybe it's that weird splashfs, anyway, point is windows doesn't recognize it, so explorer shows nothing but the disk volume itself might still be there. do what you wish, but the idea is ensuring the stick it alive and then doing whatever it takes to reproduce the steps from arch wiki

Set "USB HDD" first with the other "USB" entries or use the other key at power on for the boot menu. If it doesn't boot from the USB drive then try enabling legacy boot and/or disabling secure boot. If it still doesn't boot then post about what you did to prepare the USB drive (tool / file used). If this is what you're doing then diskmgmt isn't relevant, if you make a new filesystem (NTFS/FAT/etc.) on the USB drive it will be overwritten when you write the ISO to it. Connect the USB drive and press Win+R, "devmgmt.msc" and see if the drive appears with any problem. >>77116 That SO answer is for when you already know what's running and you want to find out how long it's taking to run in real time or CPU time. It won't help you figure out what's running in the first place. Descriptors 0, 1, 2 are stdin, stdout, stderr; 3 is an extra for shuffling stuff around when needed. First he moves the target executable (I'll call it "foo" here) to foo.bin. Now foo.bin is the actual executable that already existed. Then he creates foo as the wrapper script, so that users or other processes can run "foo" normally and it will transparently run the wrapper script. { time "$0.bin" "$@" 2>&3 3>&-; } 3>&2 2>> /tmp/times.log $0 is the name of the current script (so the wrapper script will work without needing to be changed no matter what actual executable filename is involved). $@ is all arguments to the command line. So when you run foo -b -a -r --baz it will run time foo.bin -b -a -r --baz . It then redirects this way: 2>&3 : Redirect the stderr of foo to fd 3 3>&- : Close fd 3 (I'm not sure if it makes a difference in this case, but if foo has child processes then the descriptor is inherited if not closed). Now the stderr of foo is in fd 3 which is not tied to a particular process. Outside the curly brackets we redirect fd 3 to the stderr of the time command (as opposed to the foo command that the time command runs) with 3>&2 . The fd 2 for the time command now contains the stderr of both time and foo. The rest of the line appends that to /tmp/times.log. It's not strictly necessary to do it this way; there are, as usual, multiple ways to get the same results. To find out what is running dig, you could move dig to dig.foo and create a wrapper script dig that logs the command line (with arguments) of its parent process: #!/bin/sh PARENT_COMMAND=${ps -o args= $PPID} echo $PARENT_COMMAND >> /var/log/procparent.log exec /bin/dig.bin "$@" (I didn't test this, dig may be in /usr/bin idk, need to make sure /var/log/procparent.log is writable (just chmod 777 /var/log/procparent.log since it isn't anything sensitive))

How does ISP to home IP addressing work? Like, how do I get my internet IP? My "on the internet" IP? When I goto whatismyipaddress.com it shows the location of (what I presume) my ISPs datacenter. That IP is associated with my physical street address for a specified time because my ISP has my address on file. Am I wrong? It's just someone told me that that IP isn't just mine. But I always thought that's how it worked.
Cat Mother · 2024-05-10 13:24
>>77159 On Uverse for example, it would begin with 802.1X authentication (not 802.11 WLAN), which uses layer 2 addressing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.1X#Typical_authentication_progression Once authenticated and traffic is being allowed through the switch port, the gateway (RG/CPE/"modem") broadcasts a DHCP request and receives a sticky dynamic address. This process is authenticated at various points using the MAC address of the RG, the connected pair in the DSLAM/VRAD, etc. Basically it's still just DHCP. Sometimes your public address can have multiple clients behind NAT. For opsec purposes you should assume that your ISP can still differentiate the traffic. Also, if there is an investigation and your ISP gets subpoenaed to reveal who was assigned a certain address, they'll just hand over the list and the police can just follow up with all of them as needed.

I have an SSD that's only about twice as fast as a typical HDD (sudo hdparm -Tt) though its actually fast for thumbnails since HDD couldn't do thumbnails anymore without going crazy (I have a lot of images). The problem I face is that it started wearing out, it's at 94% now. (0) Though it still has a long way what's the cause of system slowdown/freezes? I am guessing it's the pending sectors that appear sometimes when I load images or screenshots or files, though nothing is corrupted ever really, it's probably read errors or maybe the electric current of my system is just bad (the ground leak) and there's a SMART reading for the current stuff that on windows crystaldisk (loonix can't detect it). (1) So what should I do next? I'm thinking on using TRIM but don't know if it's safe to do, I guess I'll just try it on my encrypted home folder after backing everything up, and it seems my unencrypted root does not need trimming but I'll back it up just in case. (2) So my other question is what are some great SSD brands and specs you can recommend? Something that does work well with linux or from your experience, doesn't need any kind of firmware stuff (like that crucial bug), I am on DRAMless since I don't have UPS but is DRAM good without UPS? >>76483 accidentally closing a LUKS partition is not at all that bad. It's just as bad as a power-off retract and would increase your power off retract count on SMART but instead it doesn't so it's fine. it just abnormally closes the mounted FS (/, /home, /media or whatever). A while ago linux had a bug with unmounting stuff safely so it would increase power-off retract count every hibernate/shutdown/sleep but it was fixed. It's no big deal though unless the drive had problems with cached or pending writes failing to commit (more an SMR HDD issue). LUKS provides at least another safety container (well it's just checksumming), it's like your built-in FS is within an "emulator" of sorts. it's only ever a problem when your luks header gets corrupted (which you can backup/escrow anyways!). well it really depends on the FS and how it works, I'd say NTFS over Windows is actually very aggressive at marking bad read spots as bad sectors, you should just check in case for logs whether there's disk related problems [dmesg | grep -i sector] (would contain sector errors), and then check your SMART monitoring tool [smartctl -A /dev/sdZ] for possible "pending sector" and "reallocated event/sector" counts. most FS would just self-repair and show that it did fsck (or its own fs checker) on logs [dmesg and your boot logs would show it].

That IP is associated with my physical street address for a specified time because my ISP has my address on file. Am I wrong? For phones it depends on which tower and its node basestation which may decide which server to give you, this is mostly why location data may not be accurate however since google+gps+enhancedlocation(which uses MAC address global map!) or beaconlocation(c0videxposureAPI) is a feature, it can snitch your exact location even if the one that appears on speedtest or sites is wrong, your location would still be accurate (to most services but not the geo location tag for that particular IP which is like pre-defined) The other is that most routers in US would have GPS built in them, you could check them, there's probably some quectel or GPS chip on that fiber/DSL router's mini PCIE which provides accurate time (during shutdowns, since routers have no cmos batteries) but also embeds location on packets for local gateway to read (traceback purposes!) this was an issue since it would back then get read by hackers who dump omegle packets raw, they can see your location data! and prank you telling you where you live (in US)! >It's just someone told me that that IP isn't just mine. It only WORKS if you're using a smart IoT camera which most ISPs allow them to have their own IP so to make them accessible outside your network (you can call them to set it up), like when you're traveling on a different place you (and other hackers) could access your smart camera (or maybe NAS) by logging (or bruteforcing) into its IP and WAN-login, and to make matters worse there's also a thing with UPnP which could expose your device's sensitive ports (like LAN-login or device's debug ports!) even if you have WAN features disabled for the program!!! (auto opening of ports caused by UPnP would make WAN side requests look like local requests, allowing them to access your WAN-disabled programs like say qbittorrent, this is why you should always USE strong passwords! even on your own routers..)
Yuki Nagato · 2024-05-21 20:41
>>77375 >>How does ISP to home IP addressing work? >Usually you could find your own IP by issuing a ifconfig command on your: phone terminal/pc terminal/router's shell (via telnet or ssh) This answer was incomplete, but I'll tell you it's mostly dependent on certain things, VLAN ID, identifiers (router hostname/username/MAC). IPv6 is heavily dependent on your own MAC but it is usually now standard to randomize it due to possibility of stalking (and also due to the underlying flaw of IPv6 making it possible to do neighboring scans on Trillion devices, making it easier to spy when your IPv6 is appending your built-in MAC!), on IPv4 case, it would depend on those identifiers, but on some cases it could also be that the connection you have is just an extender, this is sometimes true for places where you can't even login to your CPE Webpage during ISP downtimes, this means your router works more like an interface to their computers(internet) than it is its "own" computer, this is rare but it is nasty since you have not much control on your internet endpoint. Most of the time ISPs give you connection from their local gateway, which is probably some Class A reserved IP address (imagine it's like a personal hotspot but just larger), not like they'll give you a direct IP (which at that point you can even do hosting stuff yourself like the good old days!), they only do that for "IP cameras" but the dawn of IPv6 makes it possible for IP cameras to have their own IP and accessible webpage but it's still not common. To easily visualize it think of everything as some sort of a hotspot or wifi network of a wifi network and on the last mile it is you who has a wifi network yourself. They may use terrestrial or ocean wired cable networks, ground-space satellite wireless networks, through phone networks. Now how do you "get" into the network without paying a cent? That's the most interesting part!

Why does PNG (and other formats for that matter) use CRC if there are already checks at almost every level (hardware, filesystem, protocol etc)?
Lady 3Jane.. · 2024-05-22 11:53
>>77394 Because why would the file format rely on lower layers when it can (cheaply) do it? Most hardware and filesystems don't implement crc checks at the file level afaik
Hagbard Celine · 2024-05-22 12:36
>>77395 Did some sleepy research. A quick glance at SATA reveals usage of CRC. Btrfs and ZFS, according to random SO answer, silently correct data corruption. Yeah, f2fs and ext4 (both of which I use) don't. There is wear leveling in SSDs which helps data integrity. PNG is designed for the web. IP uses basic error detection. TCP adds some more advanced checks (lost packets detection, checksum ...). Nowadays requests go through multiple routing servers, all of which obviously must ensure absence of errors. CRCs in PNGs don't quite work from my experience. I can change one byte (did that on android w/ a text editor) & my viewer would display a corrupted image just fine.
Crazy Jake · 2024-05-22 12:56
>>77396 CRC can't detect all possible errors. It is just fairly good at detecting many errors.

>>77398 Yeah CRCs are not that good, yet I once overwrote >10 bytes, that can't be not detected, right? The test image wasn't even that big. Also there are some randomly corrupted pngs on my decaying hdd, all can be displayed. Either crcs don't work or viewers ignore them. Whatever. Let me reword, is error checking in file formats necessary when there are *always* checks at the lower levels? Notably ELF, COFF and GIF don't use CRC or anything. Why? The GIF spec explicitly says >The Format is defined with the assumption that an error-free Transport Level Protocol is used for communications; the Format makes no provisions for error-detection and error-correction. Isn't a file format something high-level? Why not let the hardware and protocols do correction and all that stuff?
Trinity · 2024-05-22 14:02
>>77396 >my viewer would display a corrupted image just fine. There being a CRC doesn't mean your viewer won't happily open a file with a bad CRC. A smarter program could detect (and sometime correct) the error though. See https://github.com/rvong/png-debugger for a program that detects errors (I didn't test it). I couldn't find one to correct errors, but according to wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Error_correction_code) it should be possible to correct 1-bit errors in chunks less than 2^31 bits (8MiB) long
Nameless · 2024-05-22 14:10
>>77399 Another reason why you might have error detection/correction in the file format itself is because compressed data has substantially more entropy than the uncompressed data. Flipping a single bit in the compressed data stream can result in a completely broken image, which may not be detected by a filesystem-level checksum because it's just one bit.
The Oracle · 2024-05-22 15:00

The only reason Mozilla exists in its current form is because of Google, and a dysfunctional main competitor only serves Google's interests. The only hope for a free Internet is for Mozilla to fail, and something else to be built from scratch that would fill the void left by Firefox's absence. Right after it happens the CPU/heatsink area would be too hot to touch with your bare hand and you would find event log entries about CPU reaching critical temp. Otherwise generally unless the issue was just power loss there should be something in journalctl/messages/kern.log. Output of 'last' can indicate time/occurrence of power loss. Connect a clock radio, or regular radio, or TV or something to the same power strip / outlet. Something that you turn it on and set it to a certain time/channel/state, and then if you unplug it or the power goes out for half a second, you can tell because it does not restore itself to the configured state when the power is restored. Now next time the computer reboots, you know if it happened because it actually lost upstream power supply for a moment. Maybe try to find a cheap used UPS on Craigslist. If nothing then possibly power brick is fucked, see if it's getting really hot or making high pitched noises or you can smell magic smoke escaping. I'm still getting this error when compiling: hwsdl2_video.c:376: undefined reference to `IMG_SavePNG'

I'm currently running Debian on a cheap Dell laptop with an Intel N200, a 128GB UFS SSD and 8GB of RAM. It's not the fastest thing in the world, but it does what I need it to (mostly). However, I think I've encountered a major issue with its hardware. On all of my Linux machines I like to keep a Windows 10 LTSC VM ready to go just in case I need to use Windows software (big one is Microsoft Office 2010). Even with LTSC being relatively lightweight, it does not perform well in a virtual machine. There are noticeable stutters just navigating Microsoft Word and I believe it's negatively impacting my productivity. Is there anything I can do to make it run faster? I've heard about those custom ISO debloaters but I don't know if they'd help much. Running Windows 7 Embedded was also an idea I had until I realized I'd have to connect it to the Internet in order to download Office. Really just hoping I can somehow make this usable.

I have an old Linksys router that was randomly dropping dropping connections. Not sure if it was hardware issue or bad update or a bug in the software and already replaced now. Can I use this to connect with an out ethernet cable to a computer to indirectly connect to the wifi network instead of using the on board wifi or if there is no wireless card? I dont know what this is called. It's not a repeated/extender I know that much but it is all that comes up on searches. What is this called and can I do it? Can I just use something like OpenWRT to do this or is something else better?
The Plague · 2024-07-18 18:57
>>78797 Yes, routers can connect to other WiFi networks, it's called "client mode WiFi". OpenWRT can do it even on old devices, regular consumer router OSes typically can't, but some newer TP-Links have this feature. Works just as you'd expect, plug the computer into the router via Ethernet, go to the admin interface, select a WiFi network and input the password like one would on a phone or laptop. You can connect multiple devices to the router, and I'm pretty sure you can also create a second WiFi network in OpenWRT and have your WiFi devices connect to it, all while the router is joined to a different WiFi network as a client for Internet uplink. It might be possible to make a bridge connection using WiFi, that way your router would instead behave as a switch, if you want your computer to have open incoming ports for some reason on the host WiFi network, or if you want to use the host's DHCP or if something like printer black magic requires this.
Erik Johansson · 2024-07-18 23:37
>>78799 Thanks, that helps knowing it has a name. I would have been surprised if it wasnt a thing because I can see all sorts of uses. I mainly wanted to do it for security reasons and run old stuff. Does that mean you set the router to have the same network name and password as the main router or is it in a different section of the settings specifically for client mode? I guess i can figure it out if i mess around with it enough and if the router will actually work still assuming it wasnt a hardware fault then otherwise id likely have capacitors to replace.
Vasya Pupkin · 2024-07-19 07:39
>>78801 Client mode is a whole different section or option as opposed to the normal access point (AP) mode. A router set to client mode doesn't even need an SSID if you're okay with only plugging wired clients into the router. Just like phones and computers don't have SSIDs. If you set two WiFi access points to have the same SSID and password, then e.g. a phone will automatically switch between the two, depending on which one has the stronger signal. It's basically how WiFi in large buildings is done. But the routers in that case won't normally communicate with each other by WiFi.

Just another Random Lainon · 2024-12-26 05:51
>>82699 No. "Human interface devices", mice, keyboards, controllers, are low bandwidth by nature and typically USB 1.0, the protocol upgrades are mostly for bandwidth. There is a technical difference in USB polling rate, USB 1.0 is only 125 Hz (8 ms reaction time) while USB 2.0 can go up to 1000 Hz (1 ms). But your controller is likely only 100-200 Hz (5-10 ms) and for reference game frame time at 60 Hz is 16 ms, meaning even at low end 125 Hz USB poll rate you can do multiple inputs in between frame renders. You won't be able to tell the difference in any way, and a lot of games have a much larger lag built into their software and hardware pipeline, in AAA slop it can take multiple frames, tens of ms, for your input to start showing up in the displayed frames even if polling is 1 ms.

>>82711 Grim, now we have to pirate YouTube videos too for the best experience. This will never stop until people resist, and people never will because they're dumb and weak minded. They will say "just log in bro" As if you could register a Google account without doxx. Also an account isn't fundamentally required to browse and watch videos, it's artificially forced. Given the insane amount of content captured by YouTube, this is where a smart and non-corrupt government would step in, "hang on, shouldn't our citizens have some right to privacy" or "let's fund a public peertube instance to mirror important educational content". "who cares bro" People who realize all their activity will be tied to their real identity forever, for no plausible reason. What videos they watch, for how long, when, where they skip to, what section they rewatch, what videos you uploaded, all as good as filed under your driver's license. You should assume that data will be leaked or sold 5-10-30 years later. I don't feel comfortable browsing videos with "will this cost me a job later" in the back of my mind. "works on my machine" It does, with the equivalent of 10 surveillance cameras pointed at you, a net loss for you and payday for a corporation. "you have to pay somehow, hosting ain't cheap" It is cheap. You can rent a server with terabytes of monthly upload bandwidth for a few dollars. That's all I care about, I'd be fine with a list of <a href> to raw video files, rate limited but no IP bans. Storage expensive? It's dirt cheap, if it's not then publish torrents, let people host. Where's the option to buy simple and reasonably anonymous YouTube access like that? Nowhere, not even for $50 per month. Personal data is the only currency they accept because it has unbelievable value at scale. All in all not a huge loss, YouTube would be a great asset if used well, but nobody uses it well. It's too easy to get sucked into a shorts spree or the 15 seconds bloated into 10 minutes popular content, the midwit half-assed video essays and propaganda. Once it learns what you like, it'll waste your time with interesting but useless confirmation bias. For wasting time on media, watching a good TV show or playing a quality game can be more satisfying. Shame about all the excellent courses being gated, that is actually criminal, that stuff should be non-profit and funded with tax dollars. I'll use LBRY and PeerTube when I can. I wish creators published torrents.

>>82711 > Youtube btfo'd VPNs and rate limited tor. Use Invidious or Piped or one of the other YouTube proxies, or download the videos you want to watch. >>82713 > Grim, now we have to pirate YouTube videos too for the best experience. It's a matter of perspective. Pirating YouTube videos for the best experience has been the norm for some time now Use mpv for video, yt-dlp for saving from YouTube, Invidious or Piped for proxying videos, aria2c for fast downloads, Sponsorblock via lua scripts for, well, sponsor blocking. Or just use an app such as Grayjay from FUTO. If you've been aware that YouTube is a cesspool for some time now, this news is just confirmation bias. If this is the first time you're realizing that YouTube is a cesspool, you can complain about it and continue to use the platform as-is, or you can look into alternative measures. > This will never stop until people resist, and people never will because they're dumb and weak minded. Weak minded people will not resist, strong minded people will either resist or move on to a better platform. You're at least aware of this, so you can choose to be weak minded or not. Such is life. > They will say[...] Who cares what they will say? They will use the platform as they are told to. If and when they grow tired of it and seek other options, you can offer an alternative. > For wasting time on media, watching a good TV show or playing a quality game can be more satisfying. > Shame about all the excellent courses being gated[.] Anything you recommend? As per your note about wasting time on media, blogs and books are still interesting. As with YouTube, ignore the filler content and look for the smaller ones. > I'll use LBRY and PeerTube when I can. That's the spirit. You can also use alternative viewers such as Grayjay (which looks fantastic), or build your own with RSS feeds and yt-dlp. > I wish creators published torrents. Build your own with RSS feeds and yt-dlp (or gallery-dl, where necessary). Archive anything you want to see tomorrow, with the assumption it won't be there. Help build a torrent if and when your favorite creator gets deplatformed, so their work isn't lost forever.

>>82713 But I use youtube to listen to music and I don't a have a spare machine to host a media server. It isn't like there are any decent open source media servers anyway. Tl;dr it's very irritating that I have to waste a lot of time just trying to figure out if I like this album or not and then even more time to download it.
Shogun · 2024-12-27 15:23
>>82716 >But I use youtube to listen to music and I don't a have a spare machine to host a media server. I yt-dlp music and videos to onto a RasPi next to my desktop, with some disks plugged into a USB hub for storage it doesn't need to be a Pi, you just want something cheap that you can attach a decent amount of storage to it my setup is ghetto and I just ssh or vnc in to change the playing song or play a video on the TV I plugged the Pi into but it means that if YouTube disappears tomorrow, I still have my videos and music lots was downloaded in 480 or 720p for space reasons, but whatever and I made sure to grab subtitles (and auto translations) so the experience isn't worse than directly using YouTube

>>82700 as someone who plays Beatmania IIDX, you can totally get a ton of frame perfect inputs in a row deliberately (or on accident lol, the early/late great windows are 1f, so if you get a bunch in a row, you repeatedly screwed up in a frame perfect way), and 125hz input can absolutely fuarrrk that up. this is an edge case game, and few input devices operate at 1000hz anyway (hell, I ended up building my own since you can use gp2040 or similar to get high speed polling), but it is worth considering if you're playing anything that demands precise input regularly

>>82715 yt-dlp for YouTube doesn't work anymore on VPN, not without signing in. It's residential IPs only now, loicense and registration please. I have dedicated IPs that are blocked too, not because of rate limiting but because they're datacenter. Wouldn't be surprised if Inviduous is eradicated by IP block and rate limiting measures, and if eventually home IPs needed to log in too. Nothing stopping these motherfuckers.
Ender · 2024-12-29 09:16
>>82740 > yt-dlp for YouTube doesn't work anymore on VPN, not without signing in. Use Invidious as a proxy to download with yt-dlp. > Wouldn't be surprised if Inviduous is eradicated by IP block and rate limiting measures, and if eventually home IPs needed to log in too. Probably. If YouTube means that much to you, buy a burner phone to set up a Google account with and use the browser cookies from that to download videos. Otherwise, wean yourself off YouTube and find alternate sources of media. >>82721 > I yt-dlp music and videos to onto a RasPi next to my desktop, with some disks plugged into a USB hub for storage This is incredibly jank. I love it. Have you considered automating the setup with RSS feeds and cron jobs?
Dozer · 2024-12-29 14:33
>>82770 >Use Invidious as a proxy to download with yt-dlp. Is that possible? How? As far as I know, when you yt-dlp an Invidious link the default behavior is to parse the video ID and get the video from YouTube directly.
Tequila · 2024-12-29 16:40
>>82783 I was mistaken, doesn't look like you can officially do this. Next best thing is to use the "download" feature on a given instance (if they provide one). The official stance from the devs says to simply use a different IP address, and that if someone wants to add support for Invidious/Piped instances they are welcome to do so via plugins for yt-dlp: https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/issues/11903#issuecomment-2561825060 There seem to be a few plugins that can bypass things like age restrictions: https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/wiki/Plugins#extractor

if i run a proxy for all outbound traffic, then configure only certain trusted apps to use it on an otherwise offline windows system, would the m$ telemetry get through? by "proxy" i mean either 1. squid or other software running on a device on my lan. 2. squid running in termux on an android phone connected through usb with adb forward tcp:3128 tcp:3128 . this is a special case, since squid is localhost:3128 both on phone and pc.
Spike Spiegel · 2025-01-05 20:16
Does anyone use Privoxy? Would it be security risk to reroute all lan http&https traffic through it? Could I use openwrt settings to do that? So I wouldn't have to change every devices browsers' settings.

Hello. I am starting in Reverse Engineering and I want to start experimenting with Windows in a virtual machine, but I don't know where to find an image that can serve only as a disposable test environment. Any recommendations for this rookie, pretty please?
Yamaoto Toshi · 2025-06-17 12:41
>>86922 Make a fresh install of the operating system you want in your virtual machine and then install and configure the things you want in your test environment. Once done, you can use the snapshot feature and save the state of your VM which you can later rollback to after messing with it.

what is a good reverse proxy for my website and services? i am unable to rent a VPS(bank reasons and personally i would rather host stuff on my own hardware anyways) and my router is behind a CGnat, so i need a reverse proxy for my stuff to be accessible online. cloudflare is a last last last resort for obvious reasons. and currently trying out NGrok, tho the plan i am on doesn't allow TCP and i would like to still know if there are other options.

How do I remove a ghost device? My LUKS drive randomly dropped and I can't remount it because it still exists, even after physically disconnecting. So I tried: udisksctl unmount -b /dev/sda1 >Error looking up object for device /dev/sda1 udisksctl unmount -b /dev/mapper/<UUID> >not a mountable filesystem udisksctl lock -b /dev/mapper/<UUID> >not an encrypted device The drive does not appear in lsblk or udisksctl status . rm ing the UUID file did not help.
Sipho Nkosi · 2025-11-08 10:41
>>89593 This can happen if the external storage gets pulled out while it's mounted, either by accident (bad hookup) or intentionally. If you mounted it for example on /mnt then umount /mnt and it should disappear, but this is just a guess since I can't go off by much, a dmesg --level warn+ would help.
