Libre Reading Tablets

Jens Hansen · 2024-03-01 05:35
What are the best reading tablets on the market? Preferably they run FOSS, but if there's something proprietary you think is better or better for the price range feel free to include it. I really wanted to try something with e-ink, but unfortunately I've been getting into magazines lately, so I don't think that's an option anymore. Are there any one stop shop tablets that I can read epubs/pdfs/cbzs/the whole shebang on? The concept of e-ink intrigues me, so much so I was considering just buying two tablets - one for reading books and one for magazines/comics - but that seems excessive. I don't even know if I'll use them that much. I'm just looking for something to get started with

why do you have to coomsume another device instead of just using your phone/PC
Crazy Jake · 2024-03-01 07:54
>>76022 Because I get really sick of sitting at my PC for long hours and it fuarrrks up my back. I feel like I can't get immersed into anything I try to read on here. Phone screen is too small. The closest alternative I have is my laptop but I just feel like a tablet would be better

>>76022 because reading on your phone is like kicking dead whales down the beach because its small, and reading on your PC also is like kicking dead whales down the beach because you cant take it anywhere and also I spend too much time on it already

>>76024 As far as PC goes, I recommend a standing desk. Instead of fuarrrking up your back, you build core strength while browsing. But that's not to say don't get an e-reader. It's a lot nicer being able to read things outside or in a cafe or wherever than just at your battlestation.

>>76047 i just bought a standing desk a few days ago. it looks like if i raise it too much my monitor is going to hit a wall mounted shelf i put up to hold some hardware, so i need to think about making it higher or something before i start doing that. but that's beside the point. id still like to try an e-reader.

If you're going to try e-ink, KOReader can be sideloaded on most e-ink devices (on Kindles, you'll need to leave them in airplane mode until a new exploit appears) and it's god-tier for static & dynamic files (i.e. pdf/epub). manga works decently in my experience but the screen may be small; for magazines, idk how to pirate them to begin with; color isn't a thing really on e-ink

im using an inkpad color to read pdf's while keeping it entirely offline - color is good enough to read graphs so it works and reading research that takes time to understand means page refresh is also of little concern. The newest tech is also actually good in color https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdK_ZWZLa9A still probably not really usable for comics where you can read a page faster than it takes to refresh but otherwise absolutely good enough in quality.

>>76054 >for magazines, idk how to pirate them to begin with a lot of the major magazines sell their back catalogue digitally now. other more obscure zines are even available on archive.org >>76055 this looks really cool, but like you said im afraid its just not ready for magazines. thats probably expensive too. ill have to think about it, but im probably just going to have to go with a run of the mill tablet. doesnt Canonical make those now?

>>76054 I have a Kobo Libra 2 e-ink device. Is KOReader really significantly better than the Kobos default reader app? I read about KOReader online a while back, but didn't bothered to try it since I thought it's just for some extra features I don't really have need for. I mainly read books downloaded from libgen in epub format.

>>76332 I'm not the person you're replying to, but I own a kobo device myself. I've found that KOReader is a fantastic improvement over stock. On stock, PDFs are really slow. On KOReader, you can also use PDF reflow to make PDFs easier to read. There's also way more settings.

>>76333 Having an actually useful PDF reader on my kobo device sounds pretty nice I must admit. Do you know if KOReader handle RSS feeds, or is there some other way to do that on kobo? Currently I mostly read news on my smartphone with a feed reader app, and being able to use kobo for that would be great.
