Any other lains here with de-chromedbooks? I wanna know what books yall are running and what os/why that os. Include DE and Fetch for extra wired points
I'm running a C44Z Acer book that I originally tried to put arch on but settled for debian when I had troubles with it not liking the tiny emmc. Currently running it with XCFE because KDE is too heavy for its 2 cores and 4gb ram, Though Im thinking of putting i3 or awesome on it and getting rid of XCFE so I can squeeze out every clock cycle I can out of this soykaf. Originally purchased it for note-taking and studying but seeing how pitiful it performs as is, We will see how that actually goes once I actually get with the program.
I'm also considering putting clear linux on it because of its intel chipset and supposed performance improvements on intel chipset with clear but I'm not sure how much this will even matter with this tier device.
So far I've one big takeaway : Dont get 4gb ram device and ESPECIALLY do not get a device with EMMC, doubly so if that EMMC's capacity is as small as a fiber optic cable.

Update : Ive put sway on it and ive just been getting used to the sway keybinds. So far though I think a wm on a chromebook might actually be an ADVANTAGE because the super key is ON the home row, meaning you dont have to crane your pinky all the way down, but rather just have it a bit off to the side there. It shouldnt even get messed up by my habits because since switching to colemak on my main rig, I never press what is usually caps lock anyway, So I am effectively unlocking a new key. I never thought I'd say this but depending on how it ages I might actually CONTINUE to buy chromebooks over other laptop options BECAUSE of the location of the super key..... I'll keep you posted, lain.

Hey, I have a chromebook too but it's an ARM chromebook, and has 4GB RAM/64GB EMMC. I put postmarketos on it, since postmarketos supports a huge amount of arm chromebooks. It doesn't get hardware video decoding, but that's about the only flaw. Everything else works, including usb-c docks. I'm impressed I have a mostly functional laptop that can run off a phone charger.
If you want to remap super to caps lock, that's pretty trivial in sway, gnome, kde, and any xorg wm with with setxkbmap. Sway's config for this:
input type:keyboard {
xkb_options caps:super,shift:both_capslock
}
That'll get you caps lock as super and both shifts together as caps lock, in case you need caps lock for some things.
I like that I was able to hack my chromebook and run real Linux, but I wouldn't buy one for Linux. Fundamentally it's still a hack, a reverse-engineer or mis-use of an appliance machine. Most of them don't have ethernet ports, multiple USB ports, or even replace-able wi-fi cards. And their keyboards usually all suck.
Still pretty cool though.

I have a Chromebook collecting dust. Not sure what hardware it has. I was thinking about installing linux and setting it up as a residential proxy server at my friends place so I can gamble on sports in my home town where it isn't allowed. Not sure if this will work but I think it has a much better chance compared to a commercial VPN because the sports book apps seem to detect those IPs and either block or ban users.
Sorry this isn't very relevant to your post but personally this is all I would use a chromebook for. They are just too underpowered as a main machine for my needs. Seems pretty perfect for a simple proxy server though which is much better than just being e-waste.

It's a real shame what webshit has done to modern software. It was not so long ago that note taking meant something like vim or notepad++ and for studying you'd be looking at static HTML pages with no javascript and any chromebook would be plenty. Now it's onenote 365 and videos with 30MB of adsense javascript.
I used to use a 2GB RAM celeron chromebook with slackware on it as my primary laptop and it worked great. Then the web got more and more bloated and firefox started running out of RAM more and more often (even with adblock) until I gave up and bought a laptop with 16GB RAM. Now that 2GB laptop just sits around doing nothing, even though there was nothing wrong with it.

I do all my browsing in a virtual machine with 2GB of ram.
>firefox started running out of RAM more and more often (even with adblock)
You already know that javascript is the problem use noscript.

Unfortunately thats often not a solution with many of the LMS systems that eduction providers push upon you. My edu program should start in a month or 2 so when that comes around i'll let yall know. Hopefully I wont have to fall back on either of the other laptops i have bc i dont wanna lug them around but yeah. Now if you want to use something thats not overspecced to hell, youve got to trim absolutely everything you can and its a darn shame.

I use umatrix but a good half of websites don't work at all (a lot of times it's just a blank white page) so I end up whitelisting everything anyway.

I'm using a regular chromebook, mostly while travelling. It is cheap, durable and has everything I need. I couldn't bother putting linux on it since it already has linux and android support.
