I'm planning to turn my potato notebook into a mini server which I myself don't know what it will be used for, that's why I'm asking here, I want to ask you guys for suggestions, what can a mini server do, I need ideas to make this potato notebook have very useful functionality
My notebook is axioo poco cjm
Here's the detail specs:
Prosesor
Atom N2500
500 GB HDD
2 GB RAM

You probably not gonna be able to run Plex or any other high bandwidth stuff. I would run an IRC bouncer and samba (I hope the laptop has an Ethernet port). You could also host a website and VPN from it, as long as your ISP allows you to port forward.
Don't expect much, the CPU is like 10+ years old, you are probably better off with a RPI 5 or clone.

Here's what I did (desktop-wise, not server) with my potato netbook, even lower specs than yours.

host a website, but like >>75705 said check your isp website to make sure you wont get TOSed for opening ports. Remove the screen and run a headless server os (I use ubuntu server because every tutorial uses apt and systemd).

I have another Booklet running Devuan, it works perfectly, the one with Windows 7 is just the "retro gaming machine".

>file server (with usb hard drives)
>game server (for older games like cs 1.6 or maybe pre 1.13 mc)
>home assistant
>light web related stuff
>xmpp or irc server
>seedbox
the cpu at least has 2 cores with hyperthreading. so it might have a fighting chance with this stuff. 2gb ram isn't ideal but depending on the operating system it might work. you might want to use a 32 bit os just for the lower memory usage. especially if you're using windows. if you don't have gigabit ethernet then ur kinda fuarrrked for some of the options that are bandwidth heavy.
