what to do with a small server farm

Acid Burn · 2024-02-08 17:35
Through a couple friends working IT I have acquired a ton of servers and network equipment over the past few months. Now having access to SFP+ switches and NICs, I have no clue what to do with all this besides cry at my electricity bill. I'm currently studying for different networking certs so this definitely helps with those, but I feel obligated to do something cool with these.

>>75699 id set up a full home pirating suite. sonarr and radarr into qbittorrent with jackett. and then jellyfin for streaming. if theyre powerful enough you might be able to do live transcoding too. of course the usual nas. maybe a game server like minecraft if youre into that?

Become a VPS provider for onion hosting
Sabo Engle · 2024-02-11 17:30
>>75701 I agree. You could probably get an old gtx 1070 or a quadro equivalent for transcoding. Honestly a tesla k80 would probably work too and you can get those used. Have you thought about doing some locally hosted ai of some sort, assuming you have some graphics accelerators?

Could use it for this https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about/about.s

>>75754 How do you confirm your computing power isn't being used for some nefarious purposes?
Undisclosed · 2024-02-11 22:00
>>75755 They have info on their security page https://worldcommunitygrid.org/about/security.s Plus doing a little more digging The World Community Grid uses BOINC which you can access the source code info is on it here. https://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/SourceCodeGit Does that answer your question adequately enough? Beyond that if you are asking if there is a way to monitor processing I don't know.

>>75701 Can this be dockerized? And what can i do with cheap electricity I want money so i tough about some porn site
Turner · 2024-02-12 10:33
literally just play with it and build a lab
Nobody special · 2024-02-12 12:59
>>75765 >Can this be dockerized? yeah, heres someone that made an all in one too. ive never this specific one tho fyi https://old.reddit.com/r/docker/comments/14lbvth/servarr_one_docker_compose_file_to_rule_them_all/ i have it setup and its really comfy, although i havent fully automated sonarr/radarr, i usually do interactive search

if you dont know what to do with powerful (and mostly expensive elec consumption) then do nothing. there is nothing that you can do with those doubts.
Special Agent Bob · 2024-02-12 15:52
>>75765 What kind of pr0n and what country you are from? Any kind you may have to deal with keeping up with regulations. If you bother you better make it more niche fetishist focused and curated for quality.
Naomi Nascimento · 2024-02-13 04:54
sell them on ebay but keep one or two as workstations
xPinkyDash · 2024-05-21 16:07
>>75765 I think you're better off just mining a low-cap altcoin and hoping it moons in the future, or maybe just XMR as a means to get some of those funds in a private manner for personal use.
Dox · 2024-05-24 11:47
Host your own imageboard that's cooler than everyone elses' and try not to get V& by glowniggers. In more practical terms, I'd suggest what >>75701 and >>77371 and either use it as a piracy rig or mine soykafcoins.
Cypher · 2024-05-24 20:53
Forgot to ask. What country are you based in so we know what kind of data laws apply and can you find different locations to run the servers so in case there is a search they wont take all your personal stuff?
Ivan Petrov · 2024-07-28 11:48
>>75699 so its been a little, what did you end up doing with the equipment?
Liet Kynes · 2024-07-29 00:28
>>75699 >Through a couple friends working IT I have acquired a ton of servers and network equipment over the past few months. Just give it back abd apologize and you'll get a reduced sentence.
Anamika · 2024-08-16 07:39
Unless you want to play with clustering there's really no reason for a home user to need more than one server. You can use the switches and section off your home network with vLANs ("secure" network for your stuff, "guest" network, isolated network for IoT/HA, DMZ, etc).
Pris · 2024-08-16 09:54
>>79351 This is actually what I plan for my home network in the future. It is a reasonable usecase for such equipment and you can actually benefit from that.

Setup a small scale/pilot Monero mining operation. Then look into how you can scale up. Perhaps also look into offering VPS service while mining xmr in the off-hours CPU cores or smth
Gyula Kovacs · 2024-09-07 15:13
>>79709 Running a commercial VPS service from home is an awful idea for a multitude of reasons. Also, is XMR mining even profitable anymore? I thought mining crypto on anything but ridiculous purpose-built rigs has been an exercise in futility for some years now

>>79715 >is XMR mining even profitable anymore? it is, if you have cheap electricity >I thought mining crypto on anything but ridiculous purpose-built rigs has been an exercise in futility for some years now That's bit-soykaf. With Monero, its mining algo is designed to best run on regular CPUs. In Monero mining, we have no purpose built chips. The best purpose built chip for mining XMR is your regular CPU.
Neo · 2024-09-08 07:58
>>79715 >I thought mining crypto on anything but ridiculous purpose-built rigs has been an exercise in futility for some years now At some point it seemed like that was inevitable, but xmr developers designed an incredibly intelligent algorithm that solved the issue it seems
