Nitter is shutting down
Agent Richard Gill · 2024-01-28 03:46
https://nitter.d420.de/
official confirmation from the dev
https://github.com/zedeus/nitter/issues/983#issuecomment-1913362376
It's possible more workarounds will be found, but as of now it's not looking good.
These instances are still working for the moment:
https://nitter.unixfox.eu/
https://nitter.poast.org/
https://nitter.cz/
https://nitter.privacydev.net/ (barely)
its really sad because im sure people will keep using the xird site and nitter was the only good way to use it.

Damn, now how am I going to access Twitter privately? I just hope the same thing doesn't happen with other Front-ends (Invidious and Newpipe).
Gribbler · 2024-01-28 10:47
Damn even the github issue thread has just spiraled into some argument about free speech and alternate platforms. No viable solutions are being presented at all, not a good day for Nitter.

Idk, but I've been accessing other social media sites like Instagram and Tiktok successfully with an Android emulator and a VPN. They aren't nearly as tough on locking your account when they think you're using a phone. For Twitter I just log in on the site whenever I need to see something. Probably not the answer you're looking for

The reason for shutting down is that Twitter is killing third party access specifically to prevent accessing it without logging in so...
Ivan Horvat · 2024-01-29 10:19
Keep a lookout for the vx fx and fixup and whatever alternatives there are to fix previews. I fear they are next on the chopping block if they aren't already with the changes they are doing to third parties like Nitter.

That's some bullshit, Elon Musk just making the things worse.

LLMs ruined everything within the span of about two years. All these API restrictions came about because people were bleeding websites dry to train their models.

They really have, the worst part is there's an army of silicon valley acolytes out there now who think that glorified recursive algorithms are going to turn into a cybergod and deliver them digital transcendence from their sorry lives.
I'm not even exaggerating, I've literally seen these regards talk about how they want to live their whole lives over again but perfect this time in virtual reality crafted for them by said god because they are too pathetic to face their real life. It's just Christianity again, and not a good iteration of it either. Full immersion virtual reality is heaven, LLMs are Jesus and the cybergod is... well... "god."

Twitter is borderline unusable, so it nitter dies i will never see a tweet again.
Which is OK to be honest who even cares about twitter anymore lol

Social networks are little by little losing relevance. People spend more time on YT or on the Web than on social networks.

its a tv replacement but it cant replace social networks because they are banning communication .
The current trends seem to be telegram & disc

If it weren't for actually-relevant activists (I'm talking on-the-ground local work) using it, I wouldn't even want nitter.
(and I'm disgusted that people who should know better will just be moving to BlueSky)

May I ask which one?

It's just the beginning. In a way it's a good thing, I have been unhappy with the status quo of the web since a long time, I want change, and big and small platform alike being forced to deal with this issue may create opportunities to change the web in good ways.
After all nitter was just a bandaid on top of the complete cancer that is twitter, it's good that llms and bots are accellerating its downfall.
I think the future is small and closed communities where most of the partecipants can be reasonably sure they are all humans.

Waydroid, but I've actually been pulling my hair out tonight trying to create new accounts. I keep getting hit with the "We need to verify your phone number" page from Gmail, and I refuse to turn Mullvad off, although I don't know if that would even work at this point. I may have to just buy a burner phone again to hoard accounts, which is also a pain in the ass, as last time I had to travel to like 3 different Walmarts to even find them in stock
I have one Gmail account attached to this virtual phone but I think the account is "tainted" because I stupidly followed a Google Forms link from a student at my university without realizing I was still logged in to the Gmail, so my real life uni email is linked in some way to the "anonymous" Gmail I went through great effort of creating.
In good news, my burner Instagram has been working fine with Waydroid for months now and I've never been asked to verify or anything

good. no more twitter addiction for me. hopefully invidious shuts so I can be youtube-free
Anamika · 2024-02-03 06:44
As much as I don't like browsing Twitter, There are still persons on the site I really like that ONLY have twitter. Anyone know of any other ways to get RSS feeds from twitter accounts than Nitter?
Hitomi · 2024-02-03 19:54
public instances can't make enough accounts to avoid being rate limited, so they're gone, but is it still going to be maintained for people who just want to self host a nitter instance?
Project 2501 · 2024-02-04 13:29
I feel like I've been missing out. Was Nitter really as good as Invidious or Freetube? I always just used a burner account. You mean I could have had a sleek-looking, completely libre experience without giving those cretins any of my data? I've used it occasionally in the past but I never figured out how to set up a feed
