Portable Music Players
Schizocore enjoyer · 2024-01-27 16:58
I need a good portable music player, so I don't rely on my phone for audio. I already have a quad-driver IEM, hence a good one with a good card is necessary. I will definitely buy it used, so make sure it's affordable and under 100 Euros. For products over 100 Euros that are worth it please mention why.(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

What's that? That doesn't look like a PMP.

its a portable music player, a device called a jew's harp. It is held between the teeth and strummed. I guess there are many portable music players, but this one is uncommonly portable as it can be held in even a small pocket, unlike say a violin. It is also much more robust than the violin.
Lord Nikon · 2024-01-28 21:36
Not really relevant because it's to expensive, but I recently bought a Hisense Touch.
It's an E-ink music player running on android.
The Chinese OS is wack but any lain can work it.
I bought it because the E-ink makes it pretty useless for consooming media.
I am somewhat considering getting a dumb phone to go along with it and daily running that.
Emmanuel · 2024-01-28 22:01
I heard Hi Fi Walker is good but don't count on that for accuracy. I have been thinking of getting something some time myself some time as well since my old iPod nano doesn't have enough storage for me.
>>75478
Dont remind me the awful name of "Jew's harp" it's so nonsensical. No connection to Jewish culture and not a harp in that sense of the word we usually associate a harp with nor is it what folk musicians call a harp which would be a harmonica odfheoiwjefwoe[fhwioefwoiaejf
Ein · 2024-01-29 07:53

its called what its called dear sir, and has been so for several centuries at least. Perhaps you'd prefer pepys' 'Jews Trump', which presumably describes the same device. if you dont like it maybe you should drop english in favour of dutch where its apparently called a jodeharpe.
And who's to say its not (((connected))) somehow in some distant time, by means lost to memory ? Several english words of some usage appear naively to be nonsensical references to places and peoples, yet are understood to derive from historic trade and industrial connexions, millinery for instance, thought to be about the lombard city of milan.

what a scam! You got the music, sure, but the jew that comes with it is missing. DO NOT FALL FOR IT!!!!
(Off-joke: I remember being in the market for pmps, but I lost interest quickly. Would love to get some recs myself.)
(I hear the OG Ipod is very worth it. old reliable. but if you don't like apple products, I heard of Fiio, but they don't look like they cater to us low end buyers...)
Nguoi La · 2024-01-30 02:32
I have considered just making a music player but i feel to get good results is beyond my knowledge.
>>75486
No i looked into it and almost every country it is called something different with no connection between meanings.
Incognito · 2024-01-30 05:29
>>75514
yes but dutch is just english but dutcher so maybe apt that they're the same. Millinery isn't turning up parallels for me quickly but apparently cordwainery is cordonnery in french, another similarly derived term for cordova, and plausible they'd derive from the same trade pattern. I wouldn't expect these to be universal, as I don't think trade generally works quite like that, and nor is adoption of such a term obligatory. These words are thus because of who was associated with these things in England, that doesn't mean the same situation was going on in Hungaria Italy Germany and Norway, too, far from it.
Spanish and Finnish and several other languages call it a harp as well. idk man.

the thread is not so old, I hope anon still sees it
so, I have the Shanling M0 Pro, which is good for the price (like 120 euros), but it has been a while and it fell sometimes (being so small is a blessing and a curse), so the touchscreen bugs A LOT, I think a connector might be loose, but idk how to get inside (no visible screw holes)
aside from that, it has good features, the EQ is nice, low gain - high gain function, accepts 2TB microsds, can be used as a DAC for a computer (which I do), and it drives most iems (it drives my Moondrop Para, a planar magnetic headphone, without much trouble)
The other options on the budget range (because paying more than 400 is retarded)
Hiby has two interesting models, the digital M300 and the Hiby R3 II, both are really interesting DAPs, but the R3 II has more "DAP-like features" such as being a PC DAC/Amp when needed, dual way Bluetooth (which the Shanling M0 Pro also has, forgot to mention), a custom OS only for music and two streaming services (Tidal and Qobuz), a higher battery life than the M300 (and I guess the M0 pro too), a 4.4mm balanced output, EQ built in software, blablabla all those good stuff
the M300 feels more like a small android phone without a sim card, it doesn't have the DAC/Amp feature (and a single way Bluetooth if I'm not wrong, but I might be), but it has android so more streaming services and more customization with different apps and everything
I would probably go for the Hiby R3 II if I were you (which I'm thinking of updating from my M0), but still, both (and also the first, which is the least expensive) are good options
hope I helped

Not OP, but the Hiby R3 II is compelling to me as the currently best cheap DAP. One notable critique I keep seeing is that the Hiby UI is kinda jank. But on the other hand, typically the moment you start using an Android OS the battery life of a device tanks so you no longer have a small pocketable DAP. I'll probably get one when it's less new and the prices drop.

I think it will be a great choice
if you end up getting one, please comment back your thoughts

ive come to throw in a budget recommendation, for u little soykaf drinking lains.
after my rockbox sansa clip+ decided to die on me i had to look for an alternative. after hearing some good things about FiiO at the time i ended up getting the FiiO m3k.
ive used it for 5 years now with rockbox. the monitor was falling off after a few years, but with a lil b7000 did the trick. the micro sd slot has also gotten a little sensitive with time.. maybe a little ipa will do the trick..
i miss the tactile buttons of the sansa clip+ but other than that using its been a good budget experience.

phones released in around 2018 actually have good DACs, I'd recommend snapdragon since they are very neutral. not sure about your quad driver though, if it has BAs then it would be better off with 16 ohm jack than a classic 32 or higher from what I heard but most multi-dd iems are best with 32 ohms (every phone out there) so you don't really need specialist PMPs which target ~80ohm< headphone users.
would recommend a bunch of old used xiaomis which support lineage that you may find on places like aliexp, they are sold about 15-20 eur unlocked so it would be a much better replacement (it also helps that updooters have really not used those much since they jumped right off to the newest version).

Some anon on some other board was telling me about this, it looks pretty promising but it's important to fully judge things once they are released. I'm glad something like this is in the works though.

I'm always supportive of open source/open hardware stuff, even if I'm always skeptical of it
This goes back to that skepticism
The thing that caught my eye was
>3.5 mm audio output, providing 200 mW at 250 ohms, ~150mW at 32 ohms
Why would it provide more power to a headphone when there is more resistance? It's such a weird thing, since most high impedance headphones have low sensitivity and vice-versa
Being a custom firmware is really good, specially since you can implement more features, and it wouldn't be much of a hassle if I may add
But such low power, so trivial, costing this much, and to not know how the product will be at the end of the day?
I'm not so sure
Either way if they release it, Ill probably buy one, not even for daily driving, more for testing and implementing features to the OS if it is possible
Let's hope for the best

I think some headphones it is to power features like noise cancelation.

I use an iPod Shuffle 4th gen which I feed music into with iTunes on my Windows gaming laptop, lol.
It only has 2 GB of storage but the battery life is still pretty good after all those years (have it since 2011). iPod Shuffles are literally made for shuffling on a collection of songs originally, but you can create playlists on iTunes that represent your albums or whatever and use the voice-based menu to navigate between them. Relevant to remind that this device doesn't have a screen, which is kind of one less thing to break, and one less thing to waste battery on, as well.
Ender · 2024-02-22 16:38
>>75892
The iPod Nano 6th gen is same size as the shuffle but with a touch screen and I've used it to listen to music all day long. They have an issue where the power button breaks though and it's a bit difficult to repair because you have to remove the screen to glue the button contact back in place.

I always thought touchwheels were ugly design so iPod forever ruined design of PMPs. Why not a small scrollwheel ? Would take up much less space and not be less functional. With the saved space it could have been designed thinner.

>>75822
I can understand the appeal of this but why? Pick some of the iPod e-waste up and do the basic work of modernizing it with a flash storage and battery swap. It's suppose to be a music player. Not yet another pet project. iPods already have tons of support in the community too if you really do wanna have the ability to mod.

noise cancelling headphones are always wireless (i wanted to say almost always, but i've never seen otherwise)
doesn't make sense really
more power for headphones with higher resistance is usually found in tube amps, which this one doesn't have
i feel it is a bit sketchy
Pris · 2024-06-02 04:26

I bought a HIFI Walker. There are several companies that make comparable players, uses Micro SD for music, and plays FLAC. A bit of a throwback to the original Zune or Ipod.
Pros
>Plays a lot of music formats including FLAC, can accept different SD cards (up to 128GB iirc) if you want to organize your music physically
>Optional touch screen or analog button
>Cheap with good audio
>Some versions available with Bluetooth if you want to play it through a speaker or wireless headset, but it also has an 3.5mm AUX out and 3.5mm headphone jack side by side
Cons
>Screen scratches like a motherfucker (get a screen protector or put tape on it I guess)
>Sometimes controls can seem scratchy
>Certain files will cause glitches and you will need to restart the device

Can the og ipod play flacs? I'm looking for anything with decent battery life and flac playback capability. Basic stuff, really. Anything over 50 usd is too expensive for me
Bobby Newmark · 2024-06-02 19:40
Just get an older, used android phone and use it as a musik playa if you're broke and want a separate device for some reason. Personally still using my old gen 1 Fiio.
Zhora · 2024-06-07 04:00
Even the cheapest Chinesium mp3 players made today, like the ones you find in the pharmacy gift aisles, are as good as the golden age of mp3 players (Zune, iPod Classic) if not better. They're such paltry unitask devices now.
Otherwise, build your own :)
XERXES · 2024-06-08 11:08

Would honestly just suggest a Moondrop phone which is a lot cheaper and much better value than those overpriced audiophilia devices aimed towards old people.
>>77967
There's modding community for those if I remember which is kinda nice.
>>75878
I think it has to do with switching capabilities or detection of high impedance headphones which some smartphones could do and automatically feed higher power output.
The impedance of the output/jack is a different spec, which you'd want to be closer to zero something like 0.1~0.5 ohms which is better.

I used a NW-A55 for a few years, but it broke this winter. When it worked, the sound quality was great. I used it alongside a 1tb microSD card I cloned my music directory to; it read quickly; however, initializing the library could take upwards of ten minutes. I also had issues with corruption, both with the SD card and the player's firmware; this could've been from me uploading custom firmware to remove volume restrictions.
I've had a few issues with it over the years. First, with it overheating and failing to boot, this seemed to only happen when I'd leave it on for hours near my stereo; reinstalling the firmware seemed to fix this issue without further complications; however, after leaving it for around 16 hours at a party, it would regularly fail to play music and require the usual firmware restart. I used it for another 6 months before it permanently failed. At this point, I believe it's a hardware problem.
It's hard to say if the issues come from my tinkering or a manufacturing error; from the reviews I've read online, I haven't seen anyone else run into the same issues. Can't say I would recommend it!
