Thoughts on the CAT S22 Flip? Thinking about boofing this $50 rugged for your pleasure android flip phone. I've been thinking its time to break up with my decuckold soysung as its nothing but a useless addiction at this point. The typing on a numpad is hard to swallow though and custom ROMs are nonexistent. Thoughts?

This is weird. I just ordered this thing 2 days ago. Was curious about a dumphone, but needed Whatsapp for work, so this seemed like a good thing. If you patient, I'll tell you how it is in a week. It should arrive somewhere soon.

Once you've bought one could you please give some feedback about it lainon, it's a phone I've been eyeing for a while but wasn't sure whether to buy

i looked into it before and ended up not getting it out of laziness. i use an alcatel a405dl, works good enough. the os is kaios which is the child of firefoxos. nice that its not jewgle, but definitely less functionality than the s22.
and as far as typing on the numpad, you adjust faster than you'd think.
>>75492
for you and OP id just think about how much usage you want out of it. if you want a pure dumbphone, get a real dumbphone with no google. if you want apps and more ease of use, get something like the s22

>>75509
I want a dumbphone but I also need whatsapp and telegram for my work and my family, so I sadly cannot go full dumbphone route now, that's why I thought of the s22
Dozer · 2024-01-30 09:19
I need a map application
>>75509
I don't think real dumb phones are sold anymore
Jens Hansen · 2024-01-30 12:19
Alright OP. I'm >>75436 and I got this thing home today. I only had this on my hands for few hours, but so far my thoughts are this.
Android is not at all designed with the keyboard in mind. You frequently use the small touch screen more than you use the keyboard as it's difficult to do what you want to do with it.
One plus is that it feels really really solid. I know Cat phones are known for not breaking easy, but this is first time I have one and I can tell you can drop this from somewhere high and it will still work.
Camera is meh. Not too bad, not too good. If I will be going somewhere with intention of making pictures, I wouldn't use it unless you going for a retro aesthetic.
All android apps seem to work though. Tried spotify, whatsapp, youtube and firefox and all seem to work fine.
If you have any questions, post them here

My bad, you can use the keyboard like you did on the old phones. Just you need to activate it first in the settiings. It's not perfect, but it's actually pretty decent to type with it now

Thanks for the feedback anon !
The only problem I might have with it is that there's no jack cable and you need a usb-c jack adapter, but I think it's supplied. The sound quality won't be as good though :/
In any case I'm thinking of getting one, I've found someone who sells second-hand ones in my town and I'm thinking of going to see him today.

Mine had one in the box. And the sound quality is alright. I never had the feeling so far that it's bad.
Chani · 2024-01-31 13:15
I wonder if it would be possible to develop an app that interfaces with the keypad. I'm imagining a vim-style editor adapted for keypad input.
Crazy Jake · 2024-02-01 12:10
I bought one! It's 100% a fat piece of junk but I love it. I followed this guide to root: https://xdaforums.com/t/tut-root-how-to-root-cat-s22-flip-on-version-30.4626971/
I installed https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/apk/io.github.sspanak.tt9 traditional t9, got rid of the boot animation, used de-bloater from f-droid and removed most of the system apps. It's basically a signal flip phone now for me. I also installed keymapper to customize the yellow key on the side.
The battery is way worse than my old flip phone but this one can run signal. You can also build a dock to get the battery charging from the pads on the back: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6350507
This phone has a weird cult following and I love it.

Also the front screen is really bright and there's no way to change that I don't think. And it won't show any useful notification icons. Still pretty cool though.

I know you said you didn't like samshit but your better off getting a used galaxy xcover with a new battery scene your going to be using android anyways

I've just got mine and yeah, the sound isn't too bad. Wish it had jack nonetheless :/
>>75560
Thanks for the links anon, I'll do the same. And yes I'm surprised about the battery, I thought it would last longer but not really. But I do have an external battery if needed.
I'm still very happy about it. It looks very sturdy and suits my needs perfectly. I love it

Seeing this makes me smile. There are at least several of us!
I printed the charging dock I linked up above, for mine but didn't have pogo pins, so it's just wires sticking through right now. I have some pogo pins coming in the mail soon and will upload a pic when it's completed. It's a really cool accessory.

I'm beginning to understand why this device has a cult following ahah, it's so nice
I love the idea of this charging dock, it's so comfy. I'm going to try and pop into my uni's fablab to print one out and tinker with it. I'll take photos when it's done
Rick Deckard · 2024-02-04 03:14
printed my dock and put pogo pins in it, as well as a usb-c socket. This works quite well, and the materials were cheap. The socket I chose will not do usb-c-pd negotiation, but I usually only use 5v chargers anyway.

Holy soykaf! Sorry I was on a retreat exploring Jew tunnels in NYC for a couple weeks. Thanks for all the feedback lainons! Seems like I'm going to have to join the S22 Cult.

Thanks for the updates that helps a lot!

root method, keymapper, and printable dock are major bonus points for sure. Thanks a ton!
Also there are some upgraded battery options on Amazon, this one apparently gets you an extra 500mah:

I would totally stick with samshit if they unlocked their bootloaders, gunna go the tablet route for non cellular needs at this point
Eldon Tyrell · 2024-02-19 20:17
hey lains, recently joined the s22 cult i've ran into a bit of an issue: while attempting to debloat it i ran the de google script on the debloater app on fdroid, and i believe one of the apks it removed caused the phone to brick, ive tried all that i could, but have had no luck in reviving it. i tried sideloading the stock rom but recovery mode returned it as an error. if anyone has a fix for this that would be much appreciated . i really love the feel of this phone and am really hesitant on buying another. Thanks in advance

I once got into the same problem with another device. But I managed to find a moment in bootloop, there the phone was accessible from fastboot or adb and fixed stuff from there. I don't remember the exact details though.

What about the Kyocera Dura XA Equip ? Some of you may prefer it depending what you want.
>rugged like the CATS22
>Available unlocked (only dura series flip model they have that you can buy directly from them unlocked)
>LTE CAT 4: B2, B4, B5, B12, B14, B66
>UMTS: B1, B3, B4, B5.
>Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/r/k (2.4GHz & 5GHz)
>Bluetooth 4.2 + LE/EDR
>AOSP for the OS instead of Android Go that CATS22 uses
>3.5mm jack unlike the CATS22
>non touch screen instead uses a cursor navigation unlike the CATS22
>1770mAh removable lithium ion battery which is only a little less capacity than the CATS22
>5mp rear camera (same as the CATS22 but lacks front facing camera)
>no mention of a GPS i can find in specs
>appears to have a button for voice typing ?

$299 though for not a whole lot of advantage.
I'm open to a high-end flip phone, don't get me wrong, but for that price I would want a 12mp+ camera and a full hardware keyboard.
I always thought it would be cool too if a phone had an integrated SMA antenna connector and SDR functionality. I know you can do this on Android already with extra hardware but it would be awesome if you could just pop open a rubber cover and hook up whatever antenna you want and use your phone as a walkie talkie or HAM radio.

Ah true, i forgot to check the price or I must have mistakenly saw price of a completely different phone. It is very difficult to find a well built flip phone these days and one for just double digits or low 100s. Slider phones with qwertty keyboards seem slightly more excusable in price due to the screen being size most smartphones are which unfortunately are why i dont like modern smartphones, they dont comfortably fit in your hand or pocket.
I think something like that does exist. You likely have to look more at manufacturers of radios over phone manufacturers.
Agent Richard Gill · 2024-03-06 10:33
Most important question: Does it hang up when you close it? A flip phone is worthless without being able to slam it.
Void · 2024-03-09 05:49
>>76087
Yep it does, and the sound is very nice. It's satisfying to slam hang

definitely had the same experience with the samsung galaxy flip 2, just feels like a joke to try and type on once the novelty wears off
Fred Nurk · 2024-04-14 07:11

Yeah, I agree that the default implementation of the keyboard is crappy as it's pretty much non existent. But the Traditional T9 app on fdroid turns it from horrible to alright once you get used to it a bit. It's still annoying that you need to select text fields with your screen, but besides that it'll works as expected most of the time. I also recommend just dropping the default launcher and looking for something more text based.
>Do any Eurolains have commentary on the phone's 4g signal?
Worked perfectly fine for me. Just remember to be on the look if you not buying the sim locked version. Apparently the first edition of this phone only worked in US.
Also, I received this phone from California. Does every phone there have a label that it might cause cancer? I looked it up, and apparently yeah. But still, it was kinda funny to see
