Phone Phreaking

Discussion about phone phreaking. Phone phreaking is traditionally associated with 70's phone hacking but most generally applies to the exploration of telephone networks. What kind of PBX setups are you running into? What kind of technologies are calls going through? Evan Doorbell is a good resource on old phone systems: https://www.evan-doorbell.com/ I hope this thread can be oriented more towards modern phone systems.

>>73540 Phone phreaking largely doesn't exist anymore. Old Analog telephony systems had the control signals in-band, and used a (anachronistic term) "client side security" model. By learning how the control signals worked, phreaks could simply make the analog into the band (IE. phone), and do things. Today's telephone systems are largely IP based and use strong cryptography, and centralized authentication systems. This doesn't mean hacking phones is impossible, its just gotten radically more difficult, and worth radically less to an individual as phone time has become virtually free. Interesting topics in this area are probably SS7, and attacks on Telecom networks by state actors.

>>73560 I was more interested in dialing up lots of phone numbers and exploring what kind of systems they are using. Right now I am exploring an organization using 2 different models of PBX and seeing how they are different.
