Tech Questions #12
Old thread: >>68489
Ask your simple questions in this thread.
First question:
What's that LARP thing web shotters do where they make a "CLI" and its just a bunch of soykaf to make "REST" calls?
XERXES · 2023-10-17 01:16
Has anyone thought of this, or am I the first:

Those are sometimes helpful when you're running a headless system or when you want to use some web service's functionality as part of a shell script.
Meddler · 2023-10-18 15:14
How do I set up an RSS feed? Also is there an easy guide to them? The results that pop up from looking online don't seem particularly helpful.
Y.T · 2023-10-18 15:15
I was assembling an HF radio kit, but managed to rip off some of the pads. I think this particular failure is a recoverable one, but I'd like some advice.
Order of events:
1. Through-hole component was soldered in place
2. Pliers were used to break off the excess of leads (but this was too brutal -- I also ripped off two pads)
So, the through-hole component is secured. It only remains to route the signals.
I think I should just be able to scrape away the visible traces with a knife, and use a solder blob to connect everything together. Thoughts?
Tyrell Wellick · 2023-10-18 15:47
>>73595
rss is just xml. You can manually create and update your feed pretty easily. https://www.w3schools.com/XML/xml_rss.asp is pretty straightforward. For more detail, you can use the specification to see what fields are required and all the otional fields that are available: https://www.rssboard.org/rss-specification
You can use https://validator.w3.org/feed/ to validate that your syntax is correct.
If you're using some sort of content management system for your site, there is probably a config option or plugin to update the rss feed automatically.
Tequila · 2023-10-18 18:52
>>73596
So yeah, i tried to solder directly to that short bit of trace, and it didn't work out. The whole thing formed a blob which didn't want to bond to the small exposed component leads. The one at left is fine though.
So, my new plan is to connect these two component leads using ... a spare snipped component lead. Then, solder more component lead onto that bridge.
Agent Jones · 2023-10-18 19:30
>>73607
Much of soldering skill is hard to communicate in words, but usually pads detach when using too much heat, go to something around 350 degrees and avoid heating it for longer than needed.
Avoid lead-free if you can, just wash your hands after soldering.
After a pad already detached, yes you can use a wire or a leftover of some component leg to bridge things.

so, if i'm using a website through a .onion hidden service it means that all the requests i'm making look like it's coming from localhost on their end, right?
but how do non .onion elements in the page factor into this? let's say for example that a page on a hidden service has a youtube.com video embed and i start watching it, does that mean that the youtube video traffic is being proxied through the hidden service or am i making a connection to youtube.com skipping the onion site relays and directly through my exit node?
my guess is that it's the latter since the former would probably be a PITA to host but i'm curious and my duckduck-fu wasn't strong enough to find good answers on this
Morpheus · 2023-10-25 04:33
How is a micro kernel better than a monolithic one? Are there any (semi-)usable libre operating systems that use a micro kernel? I'm not interested in GNU Hurd because I heard that Mach micro kernel has notoriously bad performance because it has some design faults.
H.R. Giger · 2023-10-25 08:44
>>73767
Hidden service will see localhost, YouTube will see the IP of your exit node.
William Holtzer · 2023-10-25 16:03
>>73767
You'll have one circuit for the hidden service and one separate circuit for the clearnet resources embedded on the page. Every embedded clearnet resource will go through the same circuit, but if you open a separate tab and manually go to one of the embedded sites, you'll use a different circuit for the direct connection.
Let's suppose you're at an onionsite that embeds a random image from lainchan and a random video from YouTube. You'll have two circuits: one for the requests to the hidden service and one for the requests to lainchan and YouTube. If you refresh the page and get a new embedded image/video, the same two circuits from the initial request will be reused.
So you have:
* circuit A1 - used for the hidden service
* circuit A2 - used for clearnet resources embedded on the hidden service
If you then open up two new, empty tabs and then open lainchan and YouTube in them, two new circuits will be used for them. So now you have:
* circuit A1 - used for the hidden service
* circuit A2 - used for clearnet resources embedded on the hidden service.
* circuit B - used for the new lainchan tab
* circuit C - used for the new youtube tab
If you go back to the onion site and refresh again, getting a new image and new video, circuit A2 will still be used to load those resources. If you then go back to your lainchan tab and go to the thread that the image is from, you'll send a request for the image over circuit B (importantly: you are not going to see the cached image as it was when you got it from the onion service using circuit A2. The new lainchan tab won't know that you have that image already, so it will use its circuit, B, to request it). Likewise if you go to your separate YouTube tab and search for the video that was embedded, you'll reload that video over circuit C. However, if you do something like click on the "view on youtube" button of the video that is embedded in the onion service's page, then a new youtube tab may open but will still be using circuit A2.
This is assuming you're using the tor browser bundle and not just a normal browser proxying through tor.

I see several complaints on Reddit and other places that Hetzner likes to pull this bullshit.
You could probably send a data removal request to have them remove your email and payment information. It's unfortunately common with big hosting providers like this, they like to do random bullshit, ban and lock accounts completely at random.

It's Windows bootloader error, what the fuarrrk are you trying to do? Also, what the fuarrrk does 'without a usb/cd' mean? Also, you seem to be struggling to properly describe your problem how are you going to set up a PXE server? Also, why PXE at all if you have a USB stick? I've ever only used Debian and Arch, but installation process is more or less the same for every linux distro, so if you manage to at least explain what are you doing I might be able to help.
Linux Mint has a scarce installation guide: https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/
It will be helpful if you also read Debian's installation guide to get a broader picture: https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/
Linux Mint is fork of Ubuntu which is fork of Debian so they are likely very similar.

Copying all my files to a flash drive and I got this pop up. What does it mean?
Technician · 2023-10-31 23:22
>>73918
Probably your flash drive is formatted as fat32 or some other filesystem that doesn't support symbolic links, but the folder you're copying has one or more symbolic links somewhere in it.
If you want to keep those links you'll need to format the usb to something that supports symbolic links. gparted is the easiest tool to use for this.
Jens Hansen · 2023-10-31 23:59

>>73872
Use the Linux Mint flash drive and check that you didn't overwrite or delete the Windows partition (C drive) or EFI System Partition ( should be the first partition on disk. It's a small FAT32 partition with capacity of 550MB or a bit less. It has partition type of EF00 )
If EFI System Partition is missing, you can recreate it (using the Linux Mint installer or gparted) and then you need to either reinstall Linux Mint or just grub bootloader (chroot, follow instructions in Gentoo Handbook (yes, really!) and look up how to reinstall Grub from Arch Linux Wiki. You need to do something like grub-install --efi-dir=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=LinuxMint and then regenerate grub config with grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg If you install and enable os-prober, Grub can be also used to boot Windows (with chainloader).

On UEFI it's as easy as
grub-install --efi-directory=/efi --target=x86_64-efi where /efi is where the EFI System Partition is mounted.

There's no incentive to running a site you can't stand looking at it. It's like opening your house to every homeless crackhead, out of altruism or some dumb soykaf. Would you really want to live there? The crackheads get a nice place to do crack whenever they're in the mood for that, but you don't get anything out of it. So you ignore it, and either your domain or hosting all together gets shut off when it gets overrun with illegal soykaf, but you can't be bothered to delete that anymore.

How does the domain name market work? As far as I can tell, registrars charge yearly fees for having your domain registered, those fees can be subject to any change (at least as long as this is not restricted in the contract, but do any registrars do this?) and after ten years or so you might lose the domain if the registrar decides it would be better to give it to someone else.
How is this considered acceptable? It is not like I could just change the domain if I want to after a price increase, because then all the people that know my email and site would not find me anymore. Am I missing something here?
Also what are the best registrars in your opinion and why?

No reasonable registrar would really give the domain that you own (and are paying for) to someone else. Otherwise they would get the reputation for being soykafty and nobody would use them.
Another way registrars can be soykafty is having an opaque pricing scheme where the first year or few years are extremely cheap, but then they hike the price in the future. This is obviously easier for people to put up with than losing your domain for no reason. Registrars who do this have a bad reputation.
I personally use Cloudflare which is "nice" in that they don't try to scam me. It's trivial to find good registrars if you browse indie forums and such. Make sure to read the terms and conditions for the registrar you want to use, because companies generally also get in trouble for not following their own stated terms.

Your shell very likely has [ (aka test) as builtin, too. It gets used instead of the bin in /usr/bin/[ if it exists. Use help builtin to check it.

It's pretty hard. Go to college if you can because it's much easier (if you can afford it)! If you can't, then getting CCNA (widely recognized) would be a good idea. I also have heard good things about CompTIA and LPIC. You should also host a site (with some services like a pastebin, but don't host an imageboard or image/file upload services unless you are 100% certain you can moderate it.). Also, learn a bit of Bash and a bit of Python.

I also recommend getting a Raspberry Pi (any model will work but I recommend Raspberry Pi 4 or 5). You can host Apache/Nginx if you block everything outside of LAN with UFW. Use OpenSSH to access your Pi (on Windows you also need PUTTY, but I recommend you dual-boot Windows and GNU/Linux if you don't do that already).

Find a community college with a CCNA class preferably led by a CCIE instructor. You can self-study this but taking at least the first mini-mester of the course will be very useful for understanding fundamentals quickly and if you go through the whole thing you should get an exam voucher. I got my old job in enterprise firewall vendor support (read: escalations for sysadmins) through such a class. It should be a short.standalone vocational/cert course that doesn't require you to take any other classes.

I've been using my X200 for over 3 years now, it's a great laptop, generally speaking, but one thing that long-term will be a problem for me, is the battery. It runs OpenBSD with coreboot, but even if I maximize all settings, reduce daemons and backlighting to an absolute minimum, enable apmd -Z basically constantly, it barely lasts over 2 hours. I bought different batteries off ebay, that are supposedly better, but they are soykaf too. Is there any laptop that runs coreboot/OpenBSD, but has an okay battery time? Doesn't have to be extremely long, but enough so, that I can use it on the go without constantly having to look out for sockets. It's really awful how short it lasts, even with those new batteries. I don't care about the price, as long it is long-lasting, good, quality hardware and isn't more than 300 dollars.

Save more money to buy a laptop from one of the handful of manufacturers that sell new equipment with coreboot or buy a T440p and DIY, I may be wrong but from what research I did looking into this myself I think the 440p is the most modern reasonably cheap laptop that supports coreboot. Battery life is probably not going to be amazing still, but should be more than 2 hours. I don't know about BSD support, I assume its fine, the T440p was really popular.

Stinky, bad, buy OEM Lenovo batteries or recell the batteries yourself, knock off laptop batteries are generally terrible.

I corebooted my x220. I did some basic OpenBSD testing on it, but I wasn't using it extensively with OpenBSD. With Alpine + Xmonad it was on ~4 hours with a 6-cell battery from aliexpress and pretty much getting the same results now with FreeBSD. I used to have an 9-cell, I think was at around 6 hours of work.
If you want to have something more powerful, I think t430 was considered to be the best because you can change the cpu on it. You might search for the modding guides, they are quite extensive. Though you'd need to check the corebooting and OpenBDS compatibility.

TV has no Ethernet? Is the wiring in your house too old for power-line networking, I think some do wireless too.
I don't think a HTPC[home theater personal computer] is a bad idea you could run libre software on it.
Most IGPU & GPUs have hardware decoding at certain resolutions & bit depth. If the resolution you want to play is not supported by the ASIC I think it does software decoding on the CPU.
I just tried to play some 4k videos on an old[2010s] four core CPU & I got lots of dropped frames on the 10bit HDR 60fps video but I was able to able to play a video that was 30fps & lower bit depth no HDR.
I guess any new quad core plus CPU should be able to handle software decoding OK for even AV1.
You could have a look at some benchmarks https://openbenchmarking.org/test/pts/dav1d
I was able to play a 25FPS 4K AV1 video with just a few dropped frames on the quad core.

You could try Void Linux? I have never had any issues with it and it doesn't use SystemD (it uses Runit and it's faster than SystemD). Moreover, writing packages for Void is very easy (read the readme and CONTRIBUTING.md from void packages git repo) but Void Linux has pretty much all common programs already packaged. Void also has a musl version (it uses a bit less RAM but proprietary software expects Glibc). Void also has a TUI installer that just works (I recommend you set the installation source to Internet repo) and the support IRC channel is pretty active, too (if you need help with something).

>I have no time to learn a new distro, but I'll try it eventually.
It's all documented in the Void Linux handbook.
You only need to know the package manager and basics of Runit:
* Upgrade all packages (apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade): xbps-install -Su # -S means sync aka apt-get update
* Find a package (apt search foobar): xbps-query -Rs foobar # -R means remote repo
* Install a package: xbps-install foobar
* Remove a package: xbps-remove foobar
* enable service (systemctl enable openntpd): ln -s /etc/sv/openntpd /var/service/
* get status of service (systemctl status openntpd): sv status openntpd
* restart a running service (systemctl restart openntpd): sv restart openntpd
* disable service (systemctl disable openntpd): rm /var/service/openntpd
>https://docs.voidlinux.org/xbps/index.html

>Are all packaged up to date?
Yes. It's a rolling release distro but more stable than Arch Linux.
>Because if no I could as well try Devuan in hopes it's up to date, because downstream od Debian.
You need to use testing or unstable because Debian stable and Devuan stable aren't up-to-date (they only get security updates).

Both.
Example: most KDE distros (say Kubuntu and Fedora KDE spin) have more or less the same basic KDE apps (Konsole and the file manager from KDE)
... But a distro A might ship with Firefox ESR, distro B might ship with "normal" Firefox and distro C might ship with Chromium. You can install commonly used packages with a package manager after you have installed a GNU/Linux distro. I recommend starting out with Xubuntu or Kubuntu or Linux Mint because Ubuntu derivatives are easy to use and they have a lot of software available from their package repos. I'm forced to use a Raspberry Pi 2 as a desktop right now, but it's getting on my nerves how much you have to tweak just to replace systemd with sysvinit and OpenRC and how you're forced to install packages with soykaf you don't need and as an example how Chromium depends on libdbus-1-3 which in turn depends on libsystemd0.
I still need a browser, so unless I get the precompiled binary, the hardware will soykaf the bed if I install Gentoo. I think the IT guy at my job is lying to me. The other day he told me that the way to update all the computers in the plant was to walk to each one individually and run the update binary. This process takes at least 3 hours. I asked him why we don't remotely install software on the hundreds of windows workstations in our domain using group policy. He said we don't have group policy or active directory. This is just untrue. I know it's false and I know he knows it's false because I overheard him on the phone bragging about the AD configuration and also I've logged into all the DC servers on the network and seen that we do actually have group policy and active directory.
Also I noticed he doesn't know how to turn off a computer. He tries using the "shut down" button but on newer versions of windows it's actually the "restart" button that really turns off the computer.
Also all the hardware he buys is trash and I don't know where he finds it. The warehouse manager was having issues with the internet on her computer so I checked it out, and the computer had a working ethernet interface, but the ethernet cable was connected via USB 2.0 Nintendo Switch LAN adapter. Also he gave me a USB to HDMI adapter which required me to install 3rd party software to use, and it makes my monitor blue and my inputs lag.
All this to say: he claims to have A+ Security+ and Network+ certs from comptia and has the certs printed out and framed on his office wall. Also there are little comptia certification logos on his company business card. Is he just lying about having these certifications? Again linux would be the way to go because windows is a closed source ecosystem which is constantly changing in ways you can't control. You could spend a month writing this driver and then microsoft could push out an update which breaks it right away or forces you to upgrade to windows 12. Also if you actually want to use your driver on a non-developer version of windows you'll have to pay microsoft real money to get it digitally signed.
This is where I would start if I wanted to do this project. If you don't know any programming though it is a tough thing to start with.

what specifically do you mean by this? As in, switch my entire machine from Windows to Linux? That seems like a very big jump just to get a webcam working, I'm not sure I'd be willing to do that. Although, I have been toying with the idea of finally making the switch to Linux now that I've recently built my first PC. I've just been using Windows my entire life, so I've been hesitant. So, if I were to hypothetically switch to Linux, what then? How does that help my situation with getting the webcam to work? I would still have to go through the process of learning how to create my own driver, right?
H.R. Giger · 2023-12-05 13:19

>As in, switch my entire machine from Windows to Linux?
I wouldn't recommend that, especially if you haven't used linux before. It's like should you trade your scooter for a motorbike. Yes, maybe in the long term that would be better but you have to learn it first you can't just jump on and except everything to be fine.
What I would do is install a program called virtualbox. It is a program that runs on windows but then you can install different operating systems inside virtualbox without changing anything on your PC. Install linux inside virtualbox (like mint or ubuntu or debian). Then plug in the camera and virtualbox has an option to do usb passthrough which means the operating system inside virtualbox can use the camera instead of windows.
And then you should be able to open vlc inside linux inside virtualbox and it should be able to see what the camera sees. That doesn't really help you to use it as a real webcam but it will confirm that linux has the driver and you will get some experience with linux without risking any changes to windows or your PC.

Does anyone here have experience getting fcitx IME working in chromium on wayland/plasma? Works fine in firefox(gtk), and obviously native wayland stuff (Konsole terminal, Kate, etc).
Installed: fcitx5-{configtool,gtk,qt,mozc}
Tried setting environment like archwiki says but no luck. Just using VirtualKB(Fcitx 5) in plasma sys settings>Input.
Sorry if this is not enough info. Kinda noob. I am lost now. Any diagnostic direction would help greatly.

If you're just getting started, I would use soulseek and rutracker to collect as many FLACs as possible, but most of the people ripping CDs don't really put much care into the Exact Audio Copy (EAC) settings.
If you want a quick and easy way to check files for transcodes, try Spek: http://help.spek.cc/
If there's an obvious cutoff point on your spectrals for a flac file, then it may be an mp3 > flac transcode. Keep in mind that a lot of newer independent and hip-hop music will appear as transcodes because that was the way they exported their music, so no better alternatives exist
If you find an EAC log with a checksum at the bottom, you can verify it's integrity here: https://www.exactaudiocopy.de/log/checklog.html
Then i would recommend you get into private trackers. Check r/trackers for an intro. Then I would recommend interviewing for OPS, building a ratio, then getting invited to RED from there.
If you want an extra edge for building ratio on RED, I would suggest renting a $5/month shared seedbox from seedhost then using a Transmission Remote GUI for all your music torrents. This one's new but I really like it: https://github.com/openscopeproject/TrguiNG
For a music player I would recommend foobar2000 with the Georgia theme: https://github.com/kbuffington/Georgia
For tagging I would recommend Musicbrainz Picard but also add the Musicbrainz userscripts to your browser: https://github.com/murdos/musicbrainz-userscripts
Not every specific release is tagged there properly. With the scripts you can visit a Deezer, Discogs, or bandcamp page and add the release with the click of a few buttons. Also start using Discogs to learn how different editions of albums are determined. It usually goes Label > Catalog number > Country > disc matrix. Those are the main factors

That's a good observation. Normal behaviour is labelled with a 'diagnosis' label. This happens so much! I've had a girl - socially strong - label herself as autistic. She wasn't, at all, yet still she did call herself that. I have many more examples of, especially young people, labeling themselves with something. It's a load of crock. I suspect nefarious purposes, where each and every one is labelled as something crazy, in order to create a society of mentally suppressed people.

I feel compelled to note that this usage of "wall of text" differs from what it seemed to commonly mean a while ago. Where (or rather, when) I come from, a wall of text isn't "a long body of text". It referred specifically to a long body of text -- or at least long enough to exceed one screen height -- without paragraph breaks, making it unwieldy to read. It was never quite about the length per se of the text. The problem was (usually) that the writer wasn't considerate enough to divide the text into digestible paragraphs, or perhaps that their writing wasn't concise or cohesive enough to lend itself easily to division, and they couldn't be bothered to do any substantive editing, or what have you (it was, from time to time, justifiable to write unusually long paragraphs: https://old.reddit.com/r/writing/comments/5gj367/why_would_an_author_only_use_one_paragraph_for/ ). The expression used to complain about text simply being too long was "tl;dr" and it was almost always about making OP buttmad that people weren't reading their screed. A sincere "tl;dr" -- an admission of finding a body of text actually too long to bother reading -- would have been too pathetic in all but the most extreme cases of wordiness. Ten reasonable paragraphs would have been nowhere near that; it should only take about three minutes at a very leisurely pace, and easily less if you're not stopping to smell the roses along the way, which is the usual case with nonfiction. I think you should ask yourself why you consider ten paragraphs a wall of text. Is it because it takes you a long time to read it? If so, could the problem in fact be in your reading speed or ease of comprehension or a compulsion to read thoroughly where you could skim? Are you limited by difficulty in not subvocalizing? Are your thoughts distracted along the way? Does the text feel long because you're reading it on a smartphone? (Does reading a two-page spread from a book feel like a lot?) The important questions about your applicant are: Did he answer the question and then provide elaboration or relevant information that would be of interest to someone asking that question? Or was he prompted by the question to launch into a tenuously related dissertation he found personally interesting? Or did he do something in between, addressing the question (at some point) and including some extra info for whatever reason? Does his online posting style provide reliable insight as to how he'll communicate in emails, Slack, tickets, comments, or the knowledge base? Or is it possible that he is, in fact, cognizant of context and audience and capable of keeping things as concise and relevant as professionalism dictates? What other insights about problem-solving, abstraction, depth of expertise, helpfulness, or other desired qualities can you find? Have you considered how to express your concerns to others involved in the hiring process without raising the blood pressure of the entire HR department? Are you even still reading th--

NEVER. EVER. hire a sperg
why would you hire someone who is mentally ill?
yes, they are good at some quick syntactic manipulation like applying de morgans law but otherwise are completely clueless.
like you are concerned about, they burrow themselves into some small domain, and they will create code that people have to maintain proportional to how long you let them be.
a prime example of this is DSLs (autistic idioglossia for "domain specific language" - when the autist makes up a textual way of representing domain specific constructs and their compositions, instead of just using something existing that solves the "problem" of encoding a 2 level deep tree just as well)
a prime example of this is how every GNU version of software has 10 billion options/features that have no coherent cross interaction and are harmful just for existing. someone may have the misfortune of misconstruing one of these GNU extensions as an actual complete feature and trying to use then finding out it breaks because it wasn't intended for their exact use case just something else with the same name and shape.

How does GrapheneOS impact battery life? I'm considering installing it on my Pixel 6a and I like the enhanced privacy/security aspect of it, but something that's really important to me right now is getting as much use out of my phone's battery as I can. I'm already at 74 battery cycles (got the phone in September) and at this rate I'm probably going to kill the battery long before support ends. Won't be using the phone for much except calls, texts, email, music playback, and maybe browsing the web every once in a while. I'll set the brightness at around 20% and the network type to LTE too.
>why not just replace the battery yourself once it dies?
My motor skills are awful and modern phones are glass sandwiches filled with glue.
I was considering taking it to a repair shop once the battery dies, but all of the ones in my area are sketchy.

What's a good app, on android, for telegram? The Google app one blocked a message someone had posted and Nekogram's developer apparently used his powers for evil and abused some user by sending him a message or something.
Also, I'm unsure of a safe way to "root" my phone, and I don't think my phone is supported by pretty much any alternative operating system. So, if a solution requires "F-Droid" then can you point me to a guide on how to do this?

>Nekogram's developer apparently used his powers for evil and abused some user by sending him a message or something.
That might have been me. I received strange Chinese-language notifications from the Nekogram app that looked like new message notifications, but I couldn't find the messages in any of my chats. My ticket asking about this was closed without comment and when I complained in the app reviews, the owner replied "fake news" and made some config change that makes the Google Play Store say that Nekogram isn't available for my device. Nothing harmful really happened as far as I know, but the evasiveness was unsettling, so I decided to move on to other clients.
Forkgram and Nullgram are the ones I've used more recently that could be what you want. I think there's one also called Owlgram that could be worth looking into. BGram was a favorite of mine some time ago (especially for the "confirm before sending sticker/gif" feature), but now includes ads in the chat list.
You can get the F-Droid client from the F-Droid website at https://f-droid.org/ -- if this is the first time you have installed an app from an APK that you downloaded in the web browser, your phone should prompt you to allow this to happen and bring you to the appropriate places to toggle the relevant setting. Check settings in F-Droid client once you have it installed as there may be additional repos you can enable, and options that affect visibility of apps in search results.

There's multiple tools for every step of the process. Something comparable to neocities could be done in a couple days tops without prior knowledge if you just knew what to look for. I mean, on one hand I get the frustration. But there's a huge bot problem on internet and it seems to get worse every single year. So I can understand if someone wants to have a phone number or any other thing like that to identify a person. What else is there really to do? No one wants to deal with bots, yet bots become ever more easy and cheaper to produce. That works if you have 50 or so users. But scale it to 1000 or more and you essentially invented a new job for few people. Something like neocities could never do it. I believe it has million something of sites and to manually review all that is impossible. It's a solution that only works for small scale services
Agent Jones · 2023-12-20 03:01

There are already multiple ways to detect spam and whatever type of content you don't want on your platform. You just have to make it a bit sensitive and only manually check the updates that trigger the warnings until the user is at least a week old and has had 10 updates, or whatever metric you choose.
Realistically, what are they trying to achieve with the current system? It still works with obscure email providers like tutanota, it just makes it it more of a pain in the ass for legitimate users to register and will most likely lead them to use a corporate email linked to their phone number, possibly compromising their identity and leaving them open to being doxed. Doubly so when some emails only trigger the "temporary" mail detection after you select a password, site name, and complete the captcha twice, that frustrates users and pushes them into just giving their ID to google and making a gmail address.
Any bad individual that seriously wanted to ruin the site, or use it for scams or CP or whatever neocities is scared of, would be willing to wait the short period these fully anonymous "non-temporary" email providers require, or to just pay or look for a hacked email to register with. Their system does absolutely nothing to stop this while being straight up hostile to legitimate users that don't want the facebook approach to internet identities.

What happens when i watch a video on a higher resolution than my monitor? For example, let's say i choose to download the 4K format of a video with yt-dlp and i watch it on a 1920x1080 screen. Is it better than watching the 1920x1080 format? Or if i play a game on 4K instead of my native resolution? Is there a difference?

Roy Batty · 2023-12-20 09:38
>>74891
Your GPU just downscales it to fit the monitor. A video shouldn't be any different but
>yt-dlp
Youtube has atrocious bitrate for 1080p videos so they do look different but only because of the bitrate. Downloading 1440p is obligatory, but if you were to convert those 1440p videos to 1080p they would look the same on your monitor.
>game
Games might look better because it's rendering the scene at a higher resolution, that's how super sampling and the like work. At 1080p somethings might look jagged, hence why games rely on anti-aliasing, and rendering at a higher resolution allows the game to smooth those edges when downscaling leading to a better, and usually more consistent image.
Splicer · 2023-12-20 13:52
>>74891
>CRT, LCD and OLED screens about this particular thing? Really curious
for CRTs the cool thing is with low res videos, where you can just set the monitor to the closest resolution of the video and the video will end up looking very sharp. i've experimented with old 480p anime and it looks extremely sharp in a CRT when set to 480p

HELIOS · 2023-12-20 16:18

just to explain:
video compression algorithms divide the image into tiles and compress the tiles individually with a loss. This limits error size to tile size. Doubling resolution creates double tiles for same screen space which equals halved error size = sharper image. Especially important for text (guides/tutorial videos).
>>74891
Your idea of high resolution not fitting to screenspace creating some blur when its not a direct multiplicative is right, the error size from video compression is much larger however so always go for max resolution when downloading videos.

Hello Lainons, I am attempting to do some homelab project(s) and I would like some general advice on what direction I should go. However, I generally consider myself lacking in knowledge of technology
I have an Intel NUC with 32gb of RAM and if I remember correctly a 11th gen CPU, currently with x2 M.2 512gb worth of storage. Here's what I would like this machine to do (while headless):
1. Be quickly accessible via remote tools such as rdp or vnc, or a webbrowser based console
2. Run OBS up to 24/7 for some social experiment streams
3. Host a DNS Sinkhole for ad blocking (pihole most likely)
4. Host a personal, private VPN primarily to my laptop and phone
and later down the line once I get more comfortable with these tools...
5. Host a/some personal website(s)
6. Host a personal email domain
7. Host an IRC server
8. Host a TOR or I2P relay, or both
9. Host torrent seeds
Someone once mentioned to me about using a lvl I hypervisor, like ESXI, which I am luckily familiar with from work. Would that be the best method for this? If so would running a few Debian Stable VM's be the best course of action? It theoretically should be all possible on one single machine, but I imagine the VM separation would be best for security practices especially once I start opening ports on my network the public web.
I have enough spare PC parts that I could spin up a 2nd physical machine if I need more hardware resources, but I'd like to save those for being the frontend to my NAS/Jellyfin server
TL;DR- Given numbered bullet points of what I want my machine(s) to do, is ESXI or a similar lvl 1 hypervisor the right course of action?

My website has malicious spammers and bots. This includes people who will *ahem* "solve a captcha" in order to spam their links.
What can I do with them?
- Is cryptojacking a few people for a few minutes negligible? $5 a month in anonymous crypto is valuable to me since I'm hosting copyrighted content anonymously, hypothetically a LEA may be bribed into caring and I don't want to be easily traceable through payments.
- How about dodgy ads or perhaps malicious actors that will pay to get people tricked into clicking a link?
- Can I exploit their labour? I don't care about training an ML dataset, but maybe there is something simple they could do.

I have this weird thing where I throw my polyester hoodie on my chair that it would make my PC resume from its sleep mode.
I've tried shaking or pounding the table and this would not cause the same effect. Also I would see that the chair is not touching the table either. Or when I sit down with the hoodie on. When I place it carefully on the chair's back it also does not wake the machine. But only when I place the hoodie in a hasty manner.
It's not strictly a problem but peculiar, isn't it?

hoping we have some greybeards lurking. Wikipedia says "With the development of virtual memory, kernels that supported this feature were given the vm- prefix to differentiate them". i don't get why this happened. Kernels support countless different features; why is virtual memory so special that this convention came about?
Dozer · 2024-01-10 12:55
the bootparam(7) man page states that "The default of [root=] is determined at compile time, and usually is the value of the root device of the system that the kernel was built on". is this still true? is this controlled by a config option, or is it something in the source code? i checked do_mounts.c and couldn't see anything like that but then i'm not a programmer

I recently asked a question where I felt that I was getting pre-made copypasted answers, because they were just too elaborate and answered way too fast, like within minutes of me asking.
Some could argue that this helps the community, but I would say that it hurts it when you have people who are only trying to make some kind of rank/get a job instead of actually answering people's questions.

This may be a simple question or a dumb one. But I have a vm that I use that manages a closed off lan of devices I use that I use for testing.
The host device is a server running linux and I have pfsense as one of the vms on it that manages the network for other vms and the physical hardware attached to it.
This is a bit of a dumb question, but how do I setup NAT on localhost so I can vnc in to the vms without having to open the vm viewer in the host, or more annoying setup a monitor for the physical clients attached to the vm's lan network?
I've done this with SSH a couple of times and I know it exists as a setting I just need to know where to look to enable it so that I open the port in the pfsense vm on it's external face, I don't know where to connect in to it from there.

>Let's say you cloned a HDD with Clonezilla and did nothing else.
>Would testdisk be able to retrieve deleted files on the new cloned drive that were once on the original one?
Probably not because of this
>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clonezilla
>Clonezilla uses a smart file system-aware approach. It uses information from the file system to determine which blocks on a drive require copying. This ensures that only the space currently in use on the drive is copied while empty space is ignored.
The "empty space" is where the deleted file you want are.
>Clonezilla can operate on block-level (sector by sector).
This is what you want. If you can figure out how to enable this mode (it sounds like it's not the default) or find a tool that does this then every byte from the original will be in the backup and you can fish around for hidden files.
Random · 2024-02-18 21:36

Sometimes, depends on the image filetype and the type of image.
If I made that img with dd so I get a raw block to block, the answer is sometimes.
Data recovery in my opinion is more art than science.
Also testdisk will make a raw block to block disk image for you. In my experience it misses sometimes, but it's good 90% of the time.

I was thinking of using it for a server but the DDR3 motherboard and CPU I have are too power hungry to leave running 24/7, even with undervolting, and buying hardware this old is never a fun task.
I also considered making a volatile drive with it as I frequently use ram disk, but I think the speeds would be severely impaired regardless of interface.

I still don't fully understand paths and it's making me frustrated. I had a desktop file that works with this Exec line:
Exec=/home/anon/LosslessCut-linux-x64/./losslesscut
But there are other files in the binary directory, like libffmpeg.so, that wouldn't be loaded if the application called for them, right? Because it was launched as a single line without cd'ing there first.
So just to be safe, I added a Path= line and modified the Exec line like so:
Path=/home/anon/LosslessCut-linux-x64/
Exec=./losslesscut
Now why the fuarrrk doesn't this work? If the previous exec command worked, why on God's green Earth wouldn't those two lines work?
Crazy Jake · 2024-02-21 19:54

The first question to ask here is: do you have a compelling reason for not installing this application in a package manager? There should rarely be any reason to end up running applications from your home directory, unless either you're using a very obscure tool, or you are an unprivileged user on a free linux shell server 20 years ago.
Path in the desktop file isn't the same thing as the environment variable $PATH. The env var tells the OS where to look for executables by default when no explicit filepath to an application is given. The desktop file key simply sets the working directory for running the executable that Exec points to. The effect of your new shortcut file is that the OS is looking in $PATH (`echo $PATH`) for an executable named losslesscut. To make it work, you would either add the directory where your binary lives to your $PATH (find the existing variable in your ~/.bashrc or ~/.bash_profile or do `grep PATH ~/.*` and add to the end) -- especially if you have other binaries there, then you can easily refer to them by name without a full path in other desktop shortcut files. Or for a one-off, do this:
Type=Application
Exec=/home/anon/LosslessCut-linux-x64/losslesscut
(the Path key is optional and likely not relevant here)
https://specifications.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/desktop-entry-spec-latest.html
Exec
Program to execute, possibly with arguments. See the Exec key for details on how this key works. The Exec key is required if DBusActivatable is not set to true. Even if DBusActivatable is true, Exec should be specified for compatibility with implementations that do not understand DBusActivatable.
The Exec key
The Exec key must contain a command line. A command line consists of an executable program optionally followed by one or more arguments. The executable program can either be specified with its full path or with the name of the executable only. If no full path is provided the executable is looked up in the $PATH environment variable used by the desktop environment. The name or path of the executable program may not contain the equal sign ("="). Arguments are separated by a space.
Path
If entry is of type Application, the working directory to run the program in.

Install Linux Mint (I highly recommend the Linux Mint edition with Mate DE but Cinnamon is also ok.). I recommend that you avoid the Debian-based version of Linux Mint Debian (I used to use it back in the day (years ago) but it was less stable than the standard Linux Mint or the real Debian/Devuan. Linux Mint is almost the same as Ubuntu but without Snap and Gnome 3. But there is nothing wrong with using Xubuntu or Lubuntu if you are new to GNU/Linux. Even with Snap, it's still better than Windows or MacOS. If you want another choice, you could look into EndeavourOS (don't bother with Manjaro because it has a lot of other issues as well, and EndeavourOS provides what you really want, if you are looking for easy version of Arch Linux). But you can later install another distro (easy). You need to just make a backup on external HDD (or something similar) (but in theory, you can also make a separate /home partition (by default you only have / aka root partition)). But the easiest way is to just make a backup since you should have backups anyway.

>do you have a compelling reason for not installing this application in a package manager?
Yes, I refuse to use the Flatpak for an application like this, and I lack the proper libraries to build it into a deb package myself. I don't feel like explaining myself further, but let's just say Flatpak is annoying and a waste of time for this program, imo.
I don't think adding this one program to my PATH is necessary, so I think what I'm looking for is this, right?:
Path=/home/anon/LosslessCut-linux-x64/
Exec=/home/anon/LosslessCut-linux-x64/./losslesscut
>Path
>If entry is of type Application, the working directory to run the program in.
This should mean that if my program needs one of those other .so files in it's directory while it's running, it will be able to use them now, right?
P.S. The program worked before without the Path line, but I just wanted to be safe and make sure I wasn't missing out on any functionality. It works now with the two lines above, not sure if it made any difference
Gyula Kovacs · 2024-02-22 13:03
Actually, I don't see why I can't explain it now:
The restrictions placed on Flatpak feel unnecessary for a quick and easy tool to losslessly cut video. I wasn't familiar with their programs' use of the /run/user/1000 directory. I learned about this the hard way. It takes the video you are currently editing out of it's original folder and puts it there until you close the program. I thought I had a duplicate, so I deleted the original video file I was working on from the /run/user directory, which defaults to permanent deletion. As soon as I closed the program, I realized what I had done, and was left with only the split video file I created. So I permanently lost a video I can never get back, because of overly complex Flatpak rules that were never outlined to me, the end user, and that I don't even feel like I needed in the first place.
I use Flatpak for programs that I feel like actually could pose a threat to me/my security/my privacy - like Steam, Discord, or other things like that. When a simple lossless video editing tool needs to be wrapped in 20 layers of bubblewrap and apparmor, it annoys me. Thankfully the developer offers a portable binary for Linux, so I elected to use that.
Another program I use that doesn't need to be a Flatpak is Wike, a standalone Wikipedia browser that uses webkit. This time the git page offers no alternative other than the Flatpak, even if you follow their instructions to build from source, you just build a Flatpak. It's either impossible or above my skill level to turn it into a deb package, but if I could I would

>This should mean that if my program needs one of those other .so files in it's directory while it's running, it will be able to use them now, right?
Yeah basically. So, like, if you're in an interactive command-line / shell, the working directory is where you are; you see what it is with "pwd" and change what it is with "cd". Processes not running in an interactive shell also have a working directory. Relative references are relative to that location. So if your [program's] WD is /home/slice/wack/ and in wack/ you also have a file phat.so, then you can refer to phat.so with only the filename because it's in the same directory where you are. If phat.so is at /home/slice/phat.so instead, you can refer to it as ../phat.so.
Of course, absolute paths work from anywhere. Unless your program is doing things weird, the same directory where the binary lives is a reasonable choice, and I think the default anyway, which is probably why it's not a required key in the desktop file (while Type, by the way, is -- but I don't know if this means it can't work without it anyway).
The last ./ in the path doesn't hurt but also isn't really doing anything. Single dot just means "this directory" and is necessary if you're in an interactive shell and want to run an executable in the working directory when it's not in PATH (or the wrong one would be found earlier in the PATH). But the absolute filepath can just be /home/anon/LosslessCut-linux-x64/losslesscut
I'm noticing now that you used Exec=./losslesscut while it seems like I thought it said Exec=losslesscut. In the latter case the bit about adding the directory to PATH would be relevant but in this case it isn't.
This also means that the reason it didn't work is actually because the Path key doesn't define where to find the executable, it just defines where it will start when it runs. The working directory isn't a thing that can exist before the process does, hence a setting that defines what the WD will be is of no help in defining where to find the executable in the first place. I think it helps if you picture the application having its own little interactive shell.
"edit": that may seem to add nothing new -- what I mean is that running the program (via the desktop file) is an operation done by one process with its own WD. When the program runs, it will be another process with its own WD. The Path key sets what will be the initial working directory of that second process. It doesn't affect the WD of the first process, which is what would help it reach the executable using a relative path.

Hello there. I installed Ubuntu 22.04 and I want to learn about the Apache web server. I found an old book from 2003 about Apache. In the very beginning of the book, the lines "user webuser" and "group webgroup" are specified for the .htaccess configuration file. However, the book does not explain how to correctly create this user webuser in the operating system and what access rights this user should posses.
I read in the internet that there is an adduser command for Ubuntu, which includes the --disabled-login option. Could you advise me whether I should use the --disabled-login option when creating a webgroup user, or should I opt not to use it?
Thank you.

I already have networking and plenty of storage. I guess I could use a second GPU, but that would still leave me with one or two slots left. It’s a Xeon so I want to make the most of it.

I seem to have been locked out of my android phone. I changed the logon to a pattern swipe, but while I was able to do it last night, for some reason no pattern I try works. Escalating the problem is that it locks me out of even attempting to solve the problem for 60 seconds, and probably more if I continue to fail.
Is my only option to just nuke it and "reinstall" android? I have installed TWRP, but no root.
Donna Hawthorne · 2024-03-13 15:24
I am designing a PCB of considerable compactness. Since the PCBA provider I've been working with doesn't have the parts to do this order, I'm looking at reflowing it myself.
The majority of parts shown here are 0201 for-factor. Does anybody with SMD reflow experience here think that this is possible to do well without a pick and place machine? I'm not really sure, there's a lot of very small parts in a very tight space.

If you used TWRP to make a nandroid backup, you can just reinstall that instead of starting from scratch with a stock ROM. If you didn't, and you have to start over, make a nandroid backup after you have everything tweaked to perfection. Then you won't face the same or similar predicament again.

I can't even bring up the factory recover screen. This is crap. Now it's up to 3 forking minutes between tries. And 90% of my errors are just me slipping past the wrong dot. Never using pattern ever again.

There should be a power-on key-combination for your device that boots directly into recovery, bypassing any need for your authorization pattern.

>power-on key-combination for your device that boots directly into recovery
There is, but for some reason it doesn't work. I tried adb reboot recovery, and it says 'error unauthorized' or so. If I try up/down/up+down and power, it boots normally. I get a message about how my bootloader is unlocked and not to store "sensitive" files, but that always happens.
Is there a method to retrieve files without TRWP? Just an unlocked bootloader? (all i care about is retrieving file, but getting the pattern key would be preferable.) I have no idea how it was working the other night, but not now.
Also, is there a pattern code method similar to picrel? What hardware would I need to buy? For some reason I can't find how to do this, even with TOR.

The only reason I can think of is your touchscreen went bad, but that's a longshot. If your whole phone isn't encrypted, maybe some file recovery servicec might be able to retrieve your files. That's all I can think of, sorry. Losing data suh x. Been there.

How can I ensure reliable access to my files from my microPC whenever an internet connection is not available?
I'm considering using a combination of syncthing for important "hot" work and sshfs to a NAS for things like bulk datasets I don't usually need.
Any thoughts?

Their Roundcube instance, somewhy, can't handle long passwords properly - you can log into the main site, but not their webmail. Change your password from the main site. Adding (too many?) UTF-8 characters to your password causes this result as well.

Most likely the server is doing the throttling. You can use one of those "bandwidth tests" to check your available bandwidth. This one works well in my experience: https://www.speedtest.net
>this is slower than 56k.
No it isn't. 13.5 * 8 = 108kbit/s. That's still soykaf, even for DSL. Possibly, using a proper download tool would be faster than whatever firefox is doing. Seriously, why are firefox downloads so slow?

Huh? Normally it's >500KBs.
picrel is speedtest.net. I guess it is the server throttling. But it's weird because
