How does one set up an online radio station? I did cursory research and people kept clamoring about copyright and signing up for live365 or some junk. Is that unnecessary for obscure stuff? I was thinking of hosting it at my house with an old PC I have lying around or something connected to my NAS.

Set up an Icecast server to handle the actual streaming. As for licensing, if you are really worried you can go through ASCAP or equivalent but you need a license for each country you plan to broadcast to and you must geolock the rest. Probably gonna get expensive. So maybe just go for it if its just a small-time hobby project? Doubt you'll run into any trouble if you're hosting everything yourself.

>>73252 Like >>73256 said, icecast is a good tool to use for streaming. I ran into a problem semi related to it though, and that is that it so just might happen that when one audio file ends streaming and the other one still didn't load in, the stream closes for the user. Which can be really annoying. I fixed that by using linux pipes. You have an ffmpeg command which streams an audio file into the pipe, and then have an other ffmpeg command which takes that pipe as input and streams it to icecast. Which seems to work fine, although I think that might impact the speed a bit, and cause the music to not keep up with the stream which creates annoying loading times. If anyone knows of a better way to deal with the problem above, I would really like to know.

>>73252 As others said, you need to set up an Icecast 2 server. It's not hard to do so. If you need something fairly easy to set up and use, you can try AzuraCast. It includes most of the stuff you may need. I think that installs Icecast automatically as well. Alternatively, you can set up an MPD server or ezstream if you plan to have music on your streaming machine, or you can connect with a remote client that supports Icecast 2. There are quite a few programs that support it, from music players to Mixxx. It depends on how you want to do it. As for copyright issues, I guess you won't have issues with obscure stuff, but keep an eye on that, just in case.

>>73252 i wouldn't host it yourself if you intend to be streaming other people, as you'll run into legal trouble eventually purchase a few domain names, one decent VPS (you'll run the icecast server on this), and a few reverse proxies. That way if the authorities get involved they have to go through a soykaf ton of work to actually shut the service down and they'll never be able to get to you in real life
