Thoughts on e-ink?
Wintermute · 2023-09-19 13:11
I recently bought a cheap kobo with e-ink. I like it, but the resolution and screen size are too small and e-ink monitors are ridiculously overpriced. I'd still love to have a 32 inch e-ink secondary monitor for reading if they weren't so damn expensive. It would not be for gaming or videos because the 15 hertz refresh rate and ghosting is silly, bit because when you're reading it can look so sharp and be easy on the eyes.
Who else likes e-ink?

e-ink is really good for reading or note taking, much less eye strain and the battery life is great. I have a reMarkable which I like quite a bit, they come pre-rooted.

I love e-ink and e-ink devices so much. Honestly it's peak technology.
It's incredible how cheap these devices are too. Probably to sucker people into using their digital book store, but you aren't usually prevented from using your own files even on some Kindles which shocked me.
Personally I find the resolution of my Kobo fine even on small text PDFs, and it's more than enough for epubs. Maybe you got a cheaper one?
I've heard there has been some work done with colour e-ink. I wonder if that will go anywhere? Though I don't think it'd be much improvement for reading I'm still interested to see if it goes anywhere

My friend has a boox which has a color e-ink display. It works shockingly well, although the color accuracy is obviously nothing special.

Aura One chad with the sqlite trick to never sign-up and Koreader as better reader (especially for manga). Anyone tried https://github.com/baskerville/plato yet?
I have a nice manga conversion script if some people want, too.

I have a kobo clara (I think it's the same as yours?) that I like very much. I find the resolution to be enough for epubs, and it fits nicely in my pocket. It's true that reading pdfs is a pain though. People should stop using it for things that aren't meant to be printed to be honest.

Kobo devices are pretty much pre-rooted as well

I never bothered with koreader. Is it really better than the default reader? How does it interact with dictionaries?
What does your script do? Mine crops the margins, resizes the pages to the correct resolution and converts the images to 16-levels grayscale with dithering.

>I never bothered with koreader. Is it really better than the default reader?
The thing I needed the most was navigation by filesystem and the choice to easily open the next file when reaching the end.
>How does it interact with dictionaries?
Dunno.

Guess it's pretty similar, but mine doesn't trim, since I've had problems with all white pages and such. There might be a solution to this, though (https://imagemagick.org/script/command-line-options.php#trim).
Instead of just enlarging, I use waifu2x or nnedi3 to double the size before downscaling, to keep sharpness and especially text clarity. inb4 waifu2x artifacts, they exist, but not that much when just enlarging without denoising and they're invisible at the pixel densities we're talking about, while the added sharpness isn't.
Considering a switch from Imagemagick to vips, though, IM is a dirty clusterfuck.

Any recommendations? Personally looking for one. I'm seeing Kobo seem brought up a couple times here so far.

>reMarkable
At work, I saw a teacher use one. Gave it a try myself because she was asking questions about it like I knew everything. Opportunity to try it out, why not. It feels pretty great to take notes on and menuing is good. It's a shame it cost way too much for my taste. Maybe refurbished is worth it.

Love eink! I have a pocketbook ereader, it's crisp and has a warm frontlight. Also runs linux. I installed KOreader on it, it's pretty comfy.
I also though how cool it'd be to have an eink monitor for my PC, you know just to read things. In a perfect (for me) world, my 2nd monitor would be a msgical 30+ Hz grayscale eink.

I want to enjoy the e-ink life but I just can't justify replacing my "tab9 with s-pen". I made a great little netbook that doesn't seem to have an e-ink equivalent. That is the dream though.

10.3" ereader + libgen.rs is peak comfy

I've got a Kobo Clara 2e, installed nickelmenu on it to get alternate readers, and its working great so far. Did some minor mod in addition to that, like adding a bit of painters tape for better grip and some custom screensavers and premium fonts.
It's rather small though, and not suited to reading manga. I see older Kobo models which are just as good and easy to mod being sold used, so maybe try looking for used ones.

Have some amazon kindle variant, shocking battery life and great display quality. So, so, so slow though.

Say, How easy is it to break an e-ink screen?
Repaired the power button on my Kobo N647. Old model. Is a nice reader till the rubber got stuck and never pressed the actual power button. Fixed it, try to power it on before putting it back... nothing happens. I connected it on my PC to force it to show the options, nothing happened. Decided to click on "manage library" as if i could see the option, and i see a new drive popping up on my pc.
So, the whole thing works, the screen seems to be borked.
I only noticed after putting everything back on that the screen has this odd line smack down in the middle. half of the screen is slightly lighter than the other. Sad to see this thing go like that.

E-ink screens are fragile, but somehow I avoided damaging mine until now. I mainly take care to use a cover and place it in a pocket of my backpack where other items cannot weight on top of it.
Strangely enough my kindle stopped charging, everywhere on the web it said it is a battery issue so I replaced it, but it still refused to charge.
So I bought one of these devices with a broken screen and transplanted the whole main board, it works like a charm now (and I have a spare battery).
When I repaired mine, I noticed there are two different flat cables for the screen and the digitizer for the touchscreen, it sounds like the touchscreen is still working in yours, so you could check if the connection looks good just in case.

Really nice piece of technology, though I still prefer reading physical books. I mostly use e-ink based devices for more technical reading
