Need music player reccomendations + Minecraft server hosting.
Jane Doe · 2023-09-18 01:16
Lainanons, I need help to find a good music player that I can carry to skewl. Do you guys happen to know any good ones that support playing FLAC files and don't have planned obsolescence? Having wireless support is not a necessary condition. Also can you tell me what is a good hosting provider that is secure and also reasonably priced for hosting a Minecraft server with about let' say 30-60 people playing at a time? My Minecraft server idea is actually pretty interesting and I'll most likely make another post about it here after a few months.

I use a Sansa Clip+ with Rockbox.

Thanks, it seems nice but can you tell me what made you choose it over other stuff?

I would drop the FLAC requirement. Unless you're wearing nice headphones to school like a rich jackass, it's not different enough to warrant limiting your options to that. Your sound is as good as your worst piece of gear anyway. So just convert your files to MP3@320kbps for the player.
>My Minecraft server idea is actually pretty interesting
I bet you it isn't

Seconding >>72889 , except my model is an e280r I found at a garage sale. Throw Rockbox on it and you're good to go.
But >>72910 is right. You won't be able to hear the difference between a 320kbps mp3 and a FLAC at the price point you're probably looking at. I'd even go so far to say a 256kbps ogg would be good enough for "skewl" purposes

Do you also use Xvid?
Use opus 128k or Vorbis/AAC at 160k.
Miho Iwakura · 2023-09-28 00:53
are manufacturers just stupid? there's a pathetic lack of solutions for my range;
1. small, works
2. 256GB extendable
3. no weird button soykaf
4. does not look horrendous
5. below $60

OGG seems to be well supported these days from a quick search, and AAC is definitely well supported, but you pretty much need to grab something that can run RockBox to play Opus.
but in the same way that everyone uses JPEG still, a bunch of soykaf I have is in MP3

>get (used) xiaomi on ali for $25
>get phone shell for $5 if you're a hygiene fiend
>flash lineage official
>get 512GB SD
I gave up on things like rockbox since it was unobtainable.

nta but that's not a good idea. opus has higher distortion, lack high frequencies and locks to 48k and may not work for some PMP. vorbis is great but its output format is 32-bits and not all PMP support them, aac is aac and it might get bad tags but it has the lowest overhead (cpu & battery-wise). might as well just encode in lame.

Don't talk about stuff you don't understand.
>and may not work for some PMP
Yeah, which is why I also recommended AAC/Vorbis (I use Vorbis, personally, the ReplayGain situation is saner than Opus' weird RFC mechanism). Problem of AAC is that the best encoder is proprietary, even if FDK is okay.

Hey it's OP I'm in skewl, my idea is pretty good, trust me, I just don't know if it's going to be possible to pull off, it's actually very obvious when you think about it, I don't know why no one else has done it.
Mentat · 2023-12-03 09:27
Sandisk MP3 Clip Jam supports Flac, has a battery time of a week when normal usage and supports additional storage space with an SD card. It's not the best, but it works. It doesn't use external batteries, which is a good thing. Not only is buying a battery every 2 days soykaf, but it's also very costly.

I use a surfans f20 with rockbox. Definately overkill, but it's gonna last me for a while. I use it every night to listen to something relaxing as I sleep and it's been working well for a couple years at this point.

How stable and convenient is rockbox for surfans f20 for you? Also how long does it last on one charge?

Not that poster but as someone who has tried it, the rockbox port for the f20 is still very much beta tier. It's missing features specific to the f20 that make it worth purchasing in the first place and tends to crash occasionally. This was about 5 months ago when I tested it, so it's possible it's gotten better since then. The battery will last about a week or so depending on how you use it. Overall I wasn't too impressed and eventually went back to my rockboxd ipod

>>74813 is right about most of it. While I don't see many bugs (I might run into one every few months), it can be a little janky and definitely needs more features added to it. It is convenient though. Considering my ipod broke a while ago, this is more than good enough for me.

sorry for hijacking this thread, but what do you guys think about the bold 9900 as a cheap mp3 player? it's got a metal body, a removable battery, and a nice keyboard. they go for about $40 USD where i live (for a good condition used one)

Lain isn't google. If you want to make a thread about dedicated audio players then do that, if you want to make a thread about server hosting than do that. Either way please contribute at least something and don't just post what are basically search queries.
All that aside if you're looking into botnet free true dedicated audio players that will do what you need then an ipod is your best bet. Small and simple, ipod mini 2nd gen (1st gen if you don't need a lot of storage). If you want something fancy then one of the ipod classics, anything past the 5.5 gen supports video which you probably don't need in a dap but hey, maybe you like the pretty pictures idk. Either way you'll probably need to put a new battery in it, for storage get an sd card adapter from iflash. After you do that install rockbox and you're good to go, ipods wont support flacs without rockbox which is fine but if you're itune's little bitch you can dual boot i think. Dankpods on youtube is the best resource for this so check him out. If you go with the mini it should be less than like 50 bucks. Best dac in any ipod.
No idea about vps services to be honest.

I used to have one of those years ago
After some time the battery will just start dying for no reason. I replaced it 3 times and it kept dying. I think it was programmed to die to force people to upgrade

Lithium Ion batteries can lose their capacity over time for a lot of reasons including repeated charging/discharging improper storage, etc. It could be that all the batteries you bought were from the same batch or that they were used batteries. The only way to confirm for sure if the batteries were good would be to use a battery tester but this sounds like a lot of work for something I don't really care about and you should probably just buy a new phone like you did.
