Modern and comfy handheld small/pocket gaming

Nanashi No Gombe · 2023-09-07 09:31
I am of the opinion that the Gameboy Advance SP is the greatest portable gaming device that was ever made in terms of design and portability, or it would have been if only it had internal memory or could run multiple games from a single cart. Anyone knows about some kind of rpi/pine-based modern handheld gaming system that shares the design philosophies of the Gameboy SP? The fact that it fits so nicely in anyone's pocket when folded is just so nice and convenient. You can really take it anywhere, and it fits into anybody's pocket.

this soykaf wouldve been perfect if it had a headphone port

The shoulder buttons always failed on those things. My favorite will always be the ds lite if the size is acceptable, and the gba micro if you need it to be tiny.

>>72580 I prefer the DSI, for the ability to play games (including emulation) from the SD card
Dujour · 2023-09-08 00:18
>>72580 >>72584 I think the GBA micro is a step a bit too far because the buttons seem way too small for it to be a comfortable experience. I like the DSI but i feel the GB SP really hits the sweet spot with the folding.

I like the switch lite. you have to use a modchip to get it hacked though

>>72621 Cool device but way too big for pocket. GBA SP when folded is about 8x8. A folded DSI is around 8x13 iirc.

>>72584 DS flashcards are everywhere for cheap and they have better compatibility than nds-bootstrap, the DSi is ok if that's what you have but I don't think it's features make up for the lack of a gba cart slot. For emulating the new 3ds is superior, it can run pretty much anything up to pc engine cd and open_gba_firm is way better than gbarunner2.

OP, check out the Powkiddy v90, it's a chinese gba sp lookalike that runs linux, it is kinda underpowered but not too expensive.

So I believe that there is a way to load up multiple games on one cartride using a homebrewed cart called the Everdrive https://stoneagegamer.com/flash/game-boy/system/everdrive-gba/ You would just need a bunch of ROM files and you would be good to go.

>rg353v If you want something more robust. >Game Kiddy Pixel If you want something REALLY small. Both are worth checking out.

A bit too large for your standards, but I fricking love my modded GBA (not advance, with backlight, usbc battery and an omega flashcard). Appart from that, ds lites are really cheap, and with a r4 gold they are amazing. But if you love your GBA SP, I will suggest just modding it, getting a good flaschart and just ejoying it ^_^

i just use my phone and a GBA emulator, i got the portability and the capabilities with extras (and yes my phone also has an SD card and a 3.5mm jack, no it wasnt from 2017 its actually from late 2023)

>>72621 >>72641 I was going to mention it too despite the fact it is too big for ez transport without a bag. But having access to modern games + swapping between vanilla switch to an android OS is such a neat feature. Not even my beloved 3ds can do that. Speaking of which. Even if it is a little on the bulky side, I find it comfortable enough to carry around and play with on long rides/waits. (Maybe because I carry a bag with me pretty much everytime I go outside.) It has seen war and I may have missplaced the backplate somewhere back at home. Replaced it with a green plastic cover that i can just pop open if i want access to the SD card. The surprise that I get everytime I see a streetpass notification nowadays. It's fun knowing this thing is still used by others too. :)

the sp is really tough if you have big hands, the original gba was peak nintendo i really wish there was a company that would focus on the ergonomics, every chink and their grandma can build a gba clone these days

OP maybe look into the miyoo 355 flip or rg35xx SP? they run linux and are in the same form factor as the SP

>>76588 Do you use strapped-on control supplements or do you play only through touch controls? I find it an abyssal experience to use touch screens instead of physical input agents.
Acid Burn · 2024-06-30 20:08
>>76645 Miyoo Flip isn't out yet and probably won't be for awhile. It's in development hell
The Phantom Phreak · 2024-07-02 05:07
>>76715 Most games I play use the physical controls only. There are gimmicks here and there like in the pokemon games that uses the touch screen but aren't necessary and I mostly play retro games and rom hacks on it nowadays. Including some ports like Quake or Diablo The only time I think the touch screen as a gimmick is really useful is for Monster hunter. offers quick access to items and a supplementary Dpad on it if I don't have a C-stick to control the camera. the touch screen Dpad is totally optional (Thankfully. it is very finicky. hate it.) but I found some good use out of it before getting the New version with a physical C-stick.

>>76585 I just recently bought a GBA (same colour as picrel), and I'm hoping to do a battery and screen mod. Also bought an everdrive x5 mini instead of an ez-flash omega :)

>>79823 I thought file upload was 5 at some point, but whatever. There are many options, even for a full sized RPi - not just the Zero. This thread should probably be linked to the GBA one in /inter/ >>>/inter/2524 (my poor at likely wrong attempt, after not using said link type in many years)
