So, Lain is likely familiar with Dell's old 5:4 17-inch and 19-inch monitors, the Dell 1908FPt and Dell 1708FPf, etc., but Dell actually continued to manufacture square monitors well into the 2010s decade. This picture shows the Dell P1914S, a 19-inch 5:4 display that I think might be one of, or the, last square monitor made. I hope to be wrong, since square monitors hold a place in my heart.
Dell's manual for this display has a copyright date from 2013 to 2016, so this display is pretty recent and came out in a time when 1920x1080 16:9 screens were already widespread and fairly cheap to purchase. Here is Dell's manual:

Compared to the common old flatscreen Dell monitors of the late 2000s, like the aforementioned 1908FPt, the look of this monitor follows the more modern Dell design aesthetic found in products like the Dell Ultrasharp U2515H, such as the rounded corners (instead of sharp edges), the flat base (instead of the base that splits into two feet), and the uniformly gray color (instead of black + silver).
Also, if you're interested in purchasing, you can find this modern Dell P1914S for sub-$70 / £55. It has a resolution of 1280x1024.

I don't know if that's the last one or not, but I still think square monitors have an advantage over widescreen monitors in the sense that they minimize the amount of horizontal eye movements you make when using a widescreen display.

Not the last.
Eizo and a few other manufacturers still manufacture UXGA 4:3 screens and even QXGA screens with insane contrast ratios. They are all "medical imaging" monitors.
Also for what its worth you can get nice ass IDTech and BOE UXGA/QXGA panels off ebay and find cheap chinese controllers for them.

there are still 30-bit++ medical grade monitors with the same ratio of 5:4 in quadruple that resolution (2560X2048) in late 2010. they're still being made every year so you should rejoice however it might be expensive but worth it compared to soykafty gaming monitors.
Dell P1914S actually had more layers of polarizer than normal monitors so it had excellent blacks and no backlight bleeding at all though it had high latency on black-to-white and poor brightness level (it has nice matte finish though).
P1917S is objectively worse in every regard and the stand kinda shakes on its own and feels flimsy but brighter, and maybe less polarizer since my other one had many backlight bleed.
Both can do 75Hz so they're still a better pick than 1080p in its era.
for some reason I prefer 19" square than 17" square despite the 19" one being 86dpi (vs the standard 96dpi), I do think that fonts look better at 86dpi since it just uses less pixels for font hinting.

also the best feature I like with this monitor is the preset modes, there's also sharpening presets and movie mode (which I think is 6500 K). my monitor uses 80 contrast, and 73,79,91 for R,G,B
this matches my phone completely so I love the colors. the default "srgb" mode is pretty bad since it's mostly yellowish and not 6500 K (most indoor lighting are 6500 K)
