The web is officially dead. It is an irrelevant time wasting activity like going to the mall that's heavily marketed as some sort of cool thing for rich people but when you get there it's just a bunch of trendy shops selling useless soykaf you can get anywhere for cheaper without requiring converting between 3 types of meme currencies and going through some tedious registration process that gives the illusion of being a premium activity for the chosen ones so they can spam you with more marketing. Just like in a mall, nobody can survive without being a massive corporation with fuarrrk tons of money to pay for rent. It's only a matter of time until any website like this gets DDoS'd by some glitterboy kid. If this site got popular it would just have to buy more and more servers until it is forced to create a business and soon after taken over by bureaucrat glitterboys. There is no future. Your days are numbered. Make your time, lainchan.

Just because you use reddit and 4chan doesn't mean there is nothing of value. Stop wasting thread space.
The Plague · 2023-08-16 09:39
Yeah... it sμcks, doesn't it? Anyway, want some ice cream?

>>72002 That's not what I was saying at all but glad you got to feel good about yourself today.

you DO know that the web is not only made of corpos, right? there's plenty of good niche forums, small websites and blogs that are still worth checking out. i'm tired of this dead internet theory soykaf every week here in lainchan. be the change you want to see in the world: start your website, your imageboard, whatever. >>72002 this, basically.

Look, the web is more centralized than it's ever been, but the idea that it was ever going to be this idyllic anarcho-pastoral HTML 1.0 webring into eternity is insane. It's a military project that incentivizes network density and commodifies information--if the state of the web is somehow a shock to you, that's a YP. Saying something is "dead" is a feel-good abdication of responsibility. Until the servers go down, it's all still here: do something about it, or admit that you never really cared anyways.
Yet Another Lainon · 2023-08-16 19:24
This is truly the end of the internet. Im nervously waiting for advertisers and corporations to kick my door down and ruin my personal site about Doom mapping all because mainstream platforms like Twitter and Reddit are kneecapping themselves with anti-consumer updates

It's ridiculously cheap to run a website, cheaper than it has ever been, i could probably run a private mmorpg server with thousands of people simultaneously online on my gaming pc. Nobody has to turn into a massive coorporation, and most websites don't. You're actively choosing to go to the mall and then complaining about it. You could be doing something you enjoy rather than worrying about something you don't.

>>71996 ALL HAIL DEAD MALLS It will die, let's be the ones to kill the corpo hellscape and live free in cyberanarchy!!! Kill em all 1984!!
Nameless · 2023-08-16 21:10
>>72028 >let's be the ones to kill the corpo hellscape Sounds great how tho

>>72029 Dont use their products. bring your friends to greener pastures. I like Signal, Session, RSS Feeds, and Invidious. I have all but depracated my personal need for a social media giant like Twtr, Meta, or Reddit. If those arent enough for you, there is Lemmy, Mastadon, and everything else that ActivityPub has to offer (its only gonna get better)
BloodCat · 2023-08-17 14:11
>>72049 to continue, Avoid using google products like the plague. ALWAYS use adblockers whenever you can. use frontends like invidious so you can leech off of the YouTube service without supporting google through ads or information. Dont use gmail (or atleast avoid it as much as reasonable). DEFINITELY dont use tiktok. Support Free and Open Source projects (like invidious, signal, tor, etc.) Speaking of tor, Use that as well so that theres even less of your information floating around. If you are willing to change operating systems, That is a great way to become less dependant on big tech overlords and their spyware/paywalls. Dont pay for your music through a subscription, but rather use something like spotube or any of the other dozens of services like it, and if you really wanna support music creators, buy their stuff on bandcamp. Dont use free VPNs, but rather use something like tor (available on pc and android, the ios apps are backdoored and should never be used.), or if you insist on using a VPN for some odd reason, use mullvadVPN.

>>72016 the dead internet theory is just when yuppies figured out what i already knew 14 years ago, and then like the glitterboys here, immediately went back to "w-well the web totally works since there are like 1 or 2 moderately useful sites in existence and speaking of tor (>>72051) one of them (pubmed) blocks it" >>72049 >i use RSS feeds granny tier political action the web doesnt work, morons, its a poorly designed protocol. use freenet or something idc
Hagbard Celine · 2023-08-17 21:08
>>72049 >dont use the corpo trash; use alternatives like invidious glitterboy, invidious is just youtube with a nicer interface.
Ivan Petrov · 2023-08-18 11:12
>>72051 Nice post I think. Unfortunately, element is not yet pretty enough with multiple channels to get my friends onto it and off discord. Mullvad dropped port forwarding a bit ago, which is why you might want a VPN over tor/i2p (i2p postman has somewhat limited selection.) I'm working on learning to host my own VPN. >>72069 I heard some guy say it gives somewhat less data to youtube. Combined with a fresh qube and VPN, it's probably pretty good Here's a screenshot from their webpage. Seems pretty good, but I've had some trouble with youtew.be lately, which is my go to.
Drifter · 2023-08-18 12:00
>>72094 while all of this may be true, you are ultimately just using a nicer youtube. You are still at y.t.'s mercy, and using y.t.'s material, and subject to any censorship or other things which y.t. deems appropriate. Hating y.t. but loving invidious is like hating coffee but loving esspresso.
