Social Media Addiction

Unidentified · 2023-08-13 16:30
Hi Lainanons, i recently ditched most of the social media i used and now i only use: 4chan (filtered /g/ and /o/) lainchan beamng drive forum alternatehistory.com and youtube the problem is that i feel empty, i don't want to mindlessly consume reddit and f5 every minute. but i want to watch some entertainment or "funny" things i need to stabilise my dopamine addicted brain, but i also want to find something interesting so i have a questions for you all. what websites do you visit. what's the theme of the site and how often do you visit them? good day/night!
Trinity · 2023-08-13 19:50
>4chan (filtered /g/ and /o/) If you're interested, 28chan has an /o/ board. >i need to stabilise my dopamine addicted brain Dopamine does not actually have a significant effect on mood. This is a myth popularized by reddit and YouTube videos made by midwits. Many drugs, and pleasant things increase dopamine, but so do many unpleasant things. Schizophrenics have higher level of dopamine than people who are high on cocaine. The drug that has the highest effect on dopamine is 'l-dopa', a Parkinson's treatment that has no recreational potential. >what websites do you visit. Imageboards, YouTube, Sonichu, and Twitter. Don't judge me negatively for my use of Twitter, the only people I follow are people who make posts of a similar quality to the posts I find on lainchan or any other high quality imageboard. I'm not a r*dditor. >what's the theme of the site and how often do you visit them? Twice a week I visit Twitter (I don't follow anyone, I just go to the profiles of some small accounts and read their posts) and about twice a week I visit Sonichu (its a wiki for the god, Chris-Chan). Every day I visit an imageboard, but each imageboard I only visit a few times per month. There have been several month periods where I use lainchan every day for months. You ever sit back and think about how fun these sites used to be? This is a bit offtopic, but I try to spend more time on YouTube than on imageboards, and more time writing TV show than anyone YouTube. I cannot take a break from imageboard, but atleast I can limit my time on them. They're genuinely amazing if you only use them occasionally.

Start watching actual shows. If you don't like anime there are many great western shows and if you do like anime there's even more choices. If you really want something interesting watch stuff like that or start reading books. Or if you are interested in getting "fit" or whatever you could also start exercise
Roger Pollack · 2023-08-13 21:24
>>71919 >i need to stabilise my dopamine addicted brain, but i also want to find something interesting The natural desire to experience and do interesting things should not be demonized. The only problem here is the direction you have developed it in, in concert with the Big Tech people that exploit this urge. It's highly reversible. >What websites do you visit? I have a method: about once a week I like to go out to the brainmashers (Twitter, Youtube, hackernews, etc.) and gather interesting accounts/blogs. Then, I get the RSS feeds for them. For instance, the nitter frontend for twitter has RSS feeds for accounts. Then, I consume these RSS feeds once per day, as kind of a "morning paper" before I start work. However, I do not allow myself to use the brainmashers themselves for 6/7 days. I also check into lainchan about once a day (even though it's a slow board) because I love you all. Sometimes I like to browser arxiv.org or MLDP as well.

>>71919 >i need to stabilise my dopamine addicted brain, but i also want to find something interesting So you seem to have the right mindset. Now try to find something that interests you and fight the urge to visit the websites that do you no good. I don't think there's any easy answer here. You have to try and fight it. The easiest way for me was to find something I found interesting and helped me stay away from cheap recreation. e.g. For me this was philosophy and also some people inspired me to try painting miniatures which works and calms me. If you like reading maybe you could try some literature that touches the topic? Or even youtube videos could work in the beginning? I read Kierkegaard and some CCRU stuff (mainly Fisher) and it would help me remind myself why I should stay away. I have to nourish this of course and so most people I imagine. >What websites do you visit? This one, yewtube (I set up an RSS feed some time ago so I don't have to actually visit the website), fediverse like twice a day but i'm not really proud of it, lately cdda subreddit for tips, fb because family contacts me there.

>>71919 You need to find fun things that are constructive. Replacing imageboards etc. with other things is good, trying to strip fun out of your life is bad. Find higher quality fun activities, if there's books you always wish you'd had the time to read or a club you thought about joining, an instrument etc. go do it. Doing things that aren't "useful" isn't bad either, so long as they don't consume a huge amount of your time. Watching half an hour of anime or an episode of a show isn't bad for you, its the endless doom scroll and shuffling between videos on youtube that is, because its low quality stuff and its setup to encourage you to binge watch it I have stopped playing computer games recently because they're low quality time filler for the most part and have replaced them with spending more time doing actual hobbies, like exercise, reading and building a website. I sometimes very briefly feel like I'm missing out by playing but overall I feel way better and am getting a bunch of soykaf done while having fun

A few days before that I wondered, while browsing the site, unamused: "What joy does someone get from viewing and posting soyjaks and 1-10 word messages?" Then I concluded I'd probably find some pleasure in that if I didn't use imageboards so frequently. It could be fun just spamming your smarmy meme phrase, or your own 'jaks, and it would be exciting to see others begin to use it.

I'm really struggling with this too, but I'd extend it to general Internet and screen addiction. For me it's various Chans even though most are total trash, Youtube and news sites. I'm also hooked on torrenting - I'll download anything just on the off chance I'll watch it. It's really starting to negatively impact my life. I'm always scrambling to keep up at work even though I don't have that much to do, can never seem to stay on top of housework, grocery shopping, etc. Something needs to change and no matter how hard I try to stop I always get sucked back in somehow. The thing is I have hobbies (photography, music, reading/writing, classic games), a full time job, and I'm in a relationship but I waste most of my time doom scrolling anyway. It makes no sense and I tell myself I have to stop all the time. Recently I even tried using Light Phone (stupid I know), but I really do need access to email and 2FA apps for work otherwise I introduce a lot of friction in my day to day life. Has anyone had luck using one of these mini phones? I'm thinking maybe that could do what the Light Phone couldn't - still give me access to the basics I want/need but would be so irritating to use for wasteful activities that I wouldn't want to bother. I don't have any problems walking away from my desktop, it's just the damn phone. I've proven time and time again that I have no self control and I'm not sure what else to do.

I never really understood why people got addicted to social media. Hell, just watching a relative scroll through Facebook over their shoulder for five minutes made me feel braindead and retarded. I can't really focus on that soykaf because there's just no substance to it whatsoever. Maybe you need to retrain your mind to want to consume higher-quality information rather than garbage like a person would have to retrain their body from craving junk food to craving healthier foods. All I can say that is it will likely take time and a bit of "maturation," as well. When I was a lot younger, I preferred crappier websites, but then I grew into some of the better websites. Perhaps instead of browsing two or three really fast sites, you could choose to browse a fuarrrk-load of higher quality websites. In addition, you could also "buffer" at what times you use these sites so that you are seeing as much new content as possible. Like maybe use only a certain number of websites on for a certain number of days of the week, then wait 1-2 weeks before using those websites again, and switch up what websites you use on the next week. As for specific websites, you can find a lot of neat stuff on archive.org. I like to go down rabbit holes there, combing through whatever I can get my hands on. Wikipedia isn't perfect, but it's fun to click on random article to see what you can find. From there, you can do research on whatever you find that makes you curious in order find new websites. You can also check the sources of the article to find new websites.
Spooky · 2023-08-24 11:56
>>72148 It seems retarded to you because you do not have the same interests as them. If you are to make an account and train your thread of the model which shapes into your likings, you too would be hooked there while being fed exactly the content that makes your face twitch a certain way which shows positive emotions, or positive interactions.
Six · 2023-08-24 12:44
>>72273 >If you are to make an account and train your thread of the model which shapes into your likings, you too would be hooked there while being fed exactly the content that makes your face twitch a certain way which shows positive emotions, or positive interactions. I'm an other anon, but I used tiktok for few good months and I deleted it few weeks ago and I don't feel the need to go back. It's literally just good for looking at women in skimpy clothing. What else is there? I guess something like instagram has nice pictures. Maybe memes but I feel I'm getting too old for that. Besides that, what is the so called content to get addicted to? I feel the bigger issue is that people just let themselves go. They don't engage with anything that requires any kind of thought so they are having a hard time doing anything that isn't as friction less as scrolling videos
Miho Iwakura · 2023-08-24 18:23
>>72273 >interests How can you call reading soykafty clickbait articles and looking at soykafty meme generator memes "interests"? >If you are to make an account and train your thread of the model which shapes into your likings, you too would be hooked there while being fed exactly the content that makes your face twitch a certain way which shows positive emotions, or positive interactions. Actually, when I did have personalized jewtube feeds years ago that were indeed tailored to my interests, I still found it pretty easy to step away even though there was a lot of stimulating content that catered to me. I never really got hooked. Actually, I find it more addicting when there is no personalization because it adds a sense of unpredictability which then motivates me to keep looking for more content. Are people simply unable to practice self-restraint? However, the mechanism which leads people to become addicted makes sense. Out of curiousity, do you think that there will be a point that occurs where normals lose interest in social media because they have grown desensitized to the algorithms and content - that they have "had their fill" so to speak? Perhaps in this boredness, a desire to find more stimulating content appears, which leads them to parts of the internet which are now considered more obscure. Then, a new norm occurs. Or will they continue to perpetually consume the same content, on and on, without tire?
Ivan Petrov · 2023-08-24 20:34

Try meth, that will fix your social media addiction. In all seriousness, though, just do something worthwhile with your time? Doesn't have to be anything amazing, but anything that teaches you something imho is worth the time. Watch a show, read a book, read wikipedia, go outside have a walk and stare at clouds, talk to people? Anything, pretty much anything is more interesting than mindlessly scrolling social media

It's kind of aggravating, and it's why I bretty much block the comments of any site with uBlock Origin. Though, what percentage of those people who look at the article actually comment on it? >>72293 >You need to have something called "real life interactions"/ "friends" for social media to be interesting, lainanon. That is the spark which lights the gas and produces the flame. Implying I don't spend most of my time surrounded by people, interacting with them and listening to them talk about their lives in some manner. I also do have these "friends" you speak of, but regardless, most people don't seem to have much interesting lives. Am I all that interested in hearing about little Jimmy's soccer practice, how John broke up with his girlfriend, or how someone else is going on a family vacation to Hawaii? But I am not sure how interacting with friends on social media could be anymore special than in real life. I'd actually prefer to do fun, stimulating stuff outside of the house with my friends. It's more enjoyable to see their smiles and facial reactions face to face, which creates a sense of genuine connection rather than the uncanny, hollow feeling of disconnection you get on social media.

>>72306 It adds another interconnectivity layer which is inherently not easily accessible by the average human. You know when you send a funny meme to a friend? It adds weights to the model and brings you "closer" to that friend so to speak in their model. I don't know how you live your life - but this is an addicting thing for anyone who operates their day to day life in places such as a college, an office work space, or similar places where they are around similar or the same people every day. Hope this helps understand the concept, and why someone would be captivated by such technology without even realizing it a little bit better.
Judge Fang · 2023-08-26 07:27
>>72278 >Or will they continue to perpetually consume the same content, on and on, without tire? Likely this, because social media are not popular due to what you described. Yeah, constantly feeding a lot of useless easy-to-process content results in people having addiction because it's piss easy way to burn their dopamine. But that's the technique used to contain people's mind in the jail. To lure them you need something they would want to try and reach. That's where mass effect comes in action. You use any social engineering technique to create an impression that some piece of soykaf, no matter what really, is popular. The herd will take the bait due to its nature. "Hey, Joe, look, it's so popular! We must use it as well to save our lives!". Or "Hey, Joe, I've never heard about anything else, so let's use that, it's sOOO cool!" That's simply how people work. So as long as there are parties with enough resources to follow the scheme, people will always be entrapped in their products. There's no way they can get "bored", because the stuff is like kicking dead whales down the beach their intelligence and after a few years people just simply become too stupid to get bored. Think of it as of slavery. Liberated slaves often would go back to slavery just because they don't imagine their life other way. That's very scary stuff, honestly.

>>72062 back when i was still scrooling 24/7 i noticed that i was most productive and got surprisingly much of my life in order after long mundane trips. you're probably aware of this already, but in order to redevelop your drive for housework, groceries, etc., you have to let yourself get bored. social media consumption isn't just a way to get your daily hit of happy juices, it's also a particularly dumb way of briefly escaping from mentally demanding stuff or other work. it's less relaxing than relaxing, but it also doesn't bore you and gives you a happy juice hit, so most people just replace relaxation with social media consumption. in the long run, as you are not truly relaxing and letting yourself get bored, this makes you feel exhausted. the important bit here is that you don't want to replace all of your social media consumption with work or more fulfilling hobbies. you need to be bored every once in a while to refill your drive for everything else, including housework. you may also enjoy bertrand russell's "in praise of idleness": https://archive.ph/mUcgR

I then use my regular phone for anything that involves the crack-cocaine-ness of social media. Splitting work/play has genuinely helped me because I associate each phone with a different thing, and eventually I learnt to be ok with not having my apps because I could see them later when I got home at the end of the day. Maybe using an old phone isn’t the best idea for software support etc but personally I also carry a laptop around so I can do anything work related there too. The phone is the ultimate distraction for me so dumbing it down to just a tool and then having a consumption device separately really helped for splitting it and easing the addiction. If you find a bunch of barely alive forums there are tools to see if they have RSS feeds. A lot of forum software has it enabled by default. Load them all into an RSS reader or thunderbird and you end up with 1 big forum with lots of activity. The nice thing about small sites is the conversation isn't soykaf, there are no trolls, it's just not worth the time. Some active sites that are overlooked: Somethignawful - an internet classic, very active Metafilter - general StraightDope - general the well - general, also probably the oldest forum on the internet no mutants allowed - fallout related technodrome - tmnt related fark - stupid silly soykaf quartertothree - random topics anandtech - technology bodybuilding.com misc - absolute soykaf like 4chan's b in 2006 neogaf - videogames newgrounds - art, animation bbs guide - endless BBS systems, get yourself a mail client and find one with a lot of "nets" where they exchange messages with a collection of other forums. Warning these networks are slow but you can just get your feed and respond at your leisure, expect conversations to span months and responses to come back after like a week. I visit some of these every day, some every few weeks, and some like once a year. I have a calendar reminder to go and exchange my BBS messages at least once a month. Also I pick some of these up for like a few weeks and then go away for like a year. This is about a quarter of the forums and stuff I visit.

You need to actually fill your life with things that aren't passive hobbies. Try creating something, I know that helps get me motivated. Write some fanfiction about a series you love, create a website, buy a raspberry pi and use it for a project, garden vegetables, join a yoga class. There are so many things you can do rather than waste time mindlessly scrolling the internet. Sure, it isn't the easiest thing to get away from, but you need to replace your FOMO and laziness with other things. (And no, I'm not insulting you for being lazy. Most people are naturally lazy, that's why they always look for the path of least resistance. I had the same problem anon, and I still do, but it's much better than before. I'll tell you about my browsing habits: 1. I stopped using 4chan entirely spare some generals in /g/ and /jp/ because those threads contain useful information in the headers and if I have a question there is a chance an anon will be able to help. Even then, this is extremely rarely (~< once every 6-8 months). Sometimes I go on /vr/ and /vrpg/ if I'm looking for info about some game or game console. Anyway, the reason why I practically left was because despite there being extremely rare top notch posts from time to time, 99% of that site is pure and utter garbage. Plain and simple. Not worth wasting time on that site. Why waste 99% of your time for a 1% chance of seeing something that's 'okay'. Not a good time investment. 2. I'll come on lainchan if I have an urge to talk about /tech/-y things, but that's about it. Only the tech boards on lain are worthwhile, everything else is filled with /r9k/ and discord type soykaf from gen-z and the mentally unwell. Again, I visit very rarely. 3. When I want to talk but don't want to interact with normgroids, I usually just visit two small imageboards (won't give names) that generally have pretty quality posts. Most of the userbases are older, and the pph is very low, making them a diamond in the rough. Again, the lower the pph, the longer the posts, and the older the audience, the better the posting quality and content. 4. Reddit is only for pirating, looking for resources, and for technical questions. Nothing else nothing more. It's a god awful site and even lurking there is a pain. It is like kicking dead whales down the beach that when you are looking up something on a search engine they are the first results. 5. Nitter/-Booru/Pixiv/ are for art. 6. Jewtube is for entertainment and some tech tutorials, however 97% of the content there is garbage as well. Avoid clickbaity/ragebait titles, soyface in thumbnails, 'video-essayists', and short video lengths for quality content. Never participate or look at comment section unless you want to tell a small youtuber that you see and appreciate their content (An email is better for this though). 7. Blogs. Again, most of these are technical blogs in my RSS feed. From larger aggregators such as lobster.us, arstechnica, and hackaday, I tend to put them in a separate feed and only visit them once a week, due to amount of articles that they post. Again, don't waste too much time on these article/blog sites and avoid the comment sections. The most important thing that I did however was self-disciplinary action. I calculated my time on each platform and put time limits once I realized I was wasting most of my life on things I truly did not care about. Once I found more productive hobbies and interests, and got tired of the way I was originally living, these websites gradually became less appealing to me to the point where I began to detest browsing them.

>>72062 I have bought that exact phone you posted, and I have used it for about 2 months, I'll give you some of my thoughts. Firstly, the stock firmware is buggy and I would stay clear of the phone if there were no alternative. However, thankfully, the phone can be loaded with a lineageos generic system image. The appeal to this is you run a much more stable ROM, and one that is updated much more frequently than Unihertz's ROM. Along with all the usual stuff regarding degoogling and FOSS and microg etcetera etcetera. There's some debate about chink spyware on the phone, while running lineageos should minimise much of the OS level phoning home, firmware level spyware is within the realm of possibility. Arguments against: >Unihertz is too insignificant of a company to have the CCP force their spyware onto this 'enthusiast' phone (weak argument). >All phones are probably fuarked when it comes to firmware level spyware anyway (weak argument). Personally, it works like a treat for my usecase. >Music and audiobooks >Calls and text >Webapps forced upon me by institutions (better than proprietary apps) >Hotspotting my laptop >2FA For me, the small screen size is NOT a sufficient deterrent for screen time. I suppose it is because I used 'mini' smartphones in my youth. Please don't think this phone will magically fix phone addiction. This phone is best suited for people who wants a device that will sit in a pocket for long periods of time, only to be taken out for a specific purpose. As long as you are willing and able to load a cutom rom, and are okay with the potential implications regarding spyware. Oh, and the battery and camera are poor. Be aware of that before you commit to the phone.

>>73742 I was on lemmy two years ago (before the mass reddit exodus re: API fiasco). It was better than reddit, both in design and in userbase. It also helped that I am somewhat politically aligned with the developers, others now complain that everyone is a 'linux supremacist' or a socialist. But now, it might as well just be 80% * reddit. A sudden influx on newbies and new instances drowned out any semblance of original culture they had, which admittedly was almost nothing. I wouldn't recommend going there vs. not going there, it's not good, only that it's much better than reddit. At most, I would recommend a specific instance that suits an interest, like the solarpunk one, but not the broader network.
