existential fear of tech
Dozer · 2023-08-05 05:45
i know i am posting this on a forum of schizos, but does anyone else have a deepseated and existential fear of technology?
i have always been into technology, always following new developments and unveilings of cool soykaf, but in the last year with all the ai stuff and my discovery of things like the edward snowden nsa soykaf, as well as watching things like mr robot, ex machina (with how the ai is trained on bluebook's search data), black mirror etc. i literally feel so uncomfortable with everything.
and the worst part is, i am so far in i cannot escape. for context i am a younger user here, so almost every event of my life has occurred or at the very least been documented on or referenced digitally by my parents on soykaf like facebook or via text messages when i tell someone about something. there is nothing that isnt logged. everywhere i go my phone says somewhere to something carrier related or wifi related that it was there. dont get me started on the behavioural data that major corps like twitter/X have, porn sites have, browsers have.
and even if i turn everything off or dont take anything with me, there are cameras everywhere and other people have no sense of what i know and are carefree with their ignorance and dont care when they take photos or aimlessly scroll things like tiktok and send me links that i know will have some analytics tracker contacted somewhere once i click it.
i feel like i am watched all the time. maybe i am just ultra paranoid but given that the nsa can do anything, i feel like a puppet under someone else's will. and dont get me started on things like rokos basilisk, because i think about it daily and how i am possibly not even real and am just an ai's simulation based on what made its training data or something - or how most accounts online might not even be real (dead internet theory)
and yet, here i am typing this, thinking about how my keys could be logged and as soon as i hit post this is probably logged somewhere by google as a search result and used for ai training. i dont know what i expect anyone to say, but maybe its just the human need to say what we feel. maybe i am too accustomed to cyberspace that real life is gone. maybe ted K is right, and real life/nature is already dead.
oh well. post.(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST,Always argue in good faith and avoid using personal attacks.)

Yes i used to feel it too. The feeling mostly goes away once you start taking action to distance yourself from tech. After you get a job and use the money to build a lifestyle that is the most 'techless' possible the better you feel.
>i feel like i am watched all the time. maybe i am just ultra paranoid but given that the nsa can do anything,
Everyone is being watched. Either directly(smart applications that send telemetry back) or indirectly(AI used by companies/government calculating your next move. Directing marketing and laws to make you act as they wish).
As i said, we are past the point where things can be kept under control. A.I will grow and so will the government power to watch you(for example, the U.N want a world wide ID, a precursor to a world government perhaps....). The best you can do is to live as independently as you can and avoid their propaganda.
>i am too accustomed to cyberspace that real life is gone.
Never, it's out there. But i feel like people from the millennial generation and forward will have a hard time unplugging from the internet/the cloud/this fake digital life. And yet, what else can you do? I work as a software developer and yet i put ALL of my money in living as far away from tech as i can. Old 2000s car, time mostly spend hiking/cycling in nature and looking to buy a plot of land somewhere.
TL;DR: Focus on getting the most money you can and living as far from tech as possible. Have goals in the real world. If you don't take action our friends in the Government/Big business/U.N will choose for you.
and if all else fails? Well fuarrrk this gay earth and fuarrrk the antichrist.

you have responded to this well.
it is mostly that idea that there is nothing that can be done. there is no "running away" anymore so to speak. there is nowhere left to go without seriously severing anything tied to your identity.
i do plan to eventually get to the point where i can live as far away as i can from it all, but what is like kicking dead whales down the beach for me the most is that i still have yet to finish my degree, and then will still be tied to remaining within the system through work (which is moving more and more digital). its like a thread i saw the other day about life without a phone and saw how hard it is to live without tech now.
its crazy times. i dont know how the world can go without ending up like 1984 or brave new world. i think at this point its an inevitability everyone just passively accepts

>no running away
this is the part that most bothers me...even in the woods, far from other people, hard to escape the satellites, the airplanes, the plastic garbage, the city lights. living without a phone is really very easy, but short of moving to mars its very difficult to escape many of these things...and on mars there are no birds to sing

I'm not affraid myself by the technology, rather mlore affraid on how it will impact the people.
Technology is good but the majority of the people are just dumb cattle tier consummers.*So making technology easier (dumber) fore mass consuption premise a dark future.
You can see it with the internet. It was a promising tool but given to everyone it turned to soykaf.
We need technoelitism.

I feel the same. You know the word for technology comes from the ancient Greek techne, probably from Mesopotamia, and originally meant a craft or an art. In the Ancient world, making an amulet to ward off demons was a kind of tech, so was carpentry (remember Jesus was a carpenter) or being a scribe, making a clock or an astronomical instrument. The Sumerians created mathematics, observed the stars, and analog computers are ancient (picrel is an ancient computer). There's always been technology, but it it co existed with the world around us. A world of flowing rivers, plants, animals, powerful spirits and mighty demons. Just think of the humble water wheel generating power as the river gently pushes it along. Power generated by life. Technology isn't bad it's been corrupted.
There's something about modern technology and modern society that seems very off and disturbing. We don't relate to living beings anymore like the humble fisherman with his net, we try to dominate it. We don't acknowledge spirits and higher forces, we deny them and try to destroy them. Our society is fueled by oil which is made of dead animals. We're all about sucking the power out of things and we've built societies that are basically prisons for everyone except the elite. We've moved from power generated by life to power generated by death.
We live in a controlled society. There's only three things we can do. A. Understand it B. Use that knowledge to escape the controls of the system C. Resist it. The first step is familiarizing yourself with good OPSEC, learning how to anonymize yourself but appear on the outside to be just another passive NPC so it doesn't arouse suspicion. Use free and open source software, learn about CCTV and how they work, how you can evade them. If you cut yourself off from the system like the other Lain suggested that's a big red flag and it makes you stick out. But at the same time, detoxing from all the crap social media, television, and hollywood spoon feed you is a good thing. Remember what Marshall McLuhan said, the medium is the message. Be very careful about what kind of technology you use. It's like a diet, it shapes your mind and body. If you consume tiktoks all day, your attention span and cognitive skills will decline due to neuroplasticity and you'll be reduced to a drooling maniac.

Every little step you take makes their picture of you less and less complete. They didn't track your thoughts, so they won't know what you did think about yesterday. You no longer upload pictures to the cloud, so they won't see any of your new pictures. You now use Signal, so they won't know what do you chat about with your friend. You are complex thing and even you barely know yourself, so any missing puzzle is a big win.
You also change over time, so many little details about you won't be relevant as the time passes. Humans have some variation in how they behave, so the more imperfect their picture of you the less AI can predict you.
Things out of your control like satellites, CCTV and parents/friends giving information away via unprotected channels are bad, but I think they require an actual human effort and analysis so you are safe unless targeted. Once targeted you either too boring and not what they are looking for or you just go full on with changing appearance and talking to nobody who knows old you.
But yeah you can't ever achieve 100% privacy, but life is a mess anyway

There is no way that technology becomes coexistent, much less coextensive, with human agency. But that's fine, because humans are disgusting mammal meat. Sure, technology is horrifying, but reality is horrifying. Without technology you will still be devoured by worms. Puts your own relative and fleeting comfort into perspective, in my opinion at least. Technological advancement is basically inevitable, too. There is no escape. You can only prolong it, maybe even believe you might reverse it, but you will always arrive at that self-same reckoning.

Humans are notorious for making any kind of biodiversity go poof anytime they show up anywhere outside of southeast Africa (because we evolved there and so the ecosystem has ways of countering our big brain exploits)
Basically once we got fire, language and primitive tools it was game over for most of megafauna

So am I. You know, being the part of that modern technology crap is the quite frustrating.
One part of me understands how bad things really are and another just wants to earn money.

Sound like a good plan, ty Lainon.

One doesn't get away from technology without getting away from society any more. And one will never be able to again. That doesn't mean that your entire life needs to be tied to online accounts and logs. While its true that today you basically need an online presence for many near essential parts of life that doesn't mean you have to let it own you.
>>71695
>Have goals in the real world.
This is the big one.
>>71712
The inevitable spread of technology really only happens within society. Leave society, leave technology. Ted did it, you can too.
Basically you will have an online presence. But you choose what you put out there. Simply spend as much time away from the all seeing asshole of big tech as possible and it should work out just fine. Surely.

On the contrary, he bombed people because he found that it wasn't possible
