How to find cheap/free used tech?

Trinity · 2023-07-20 16:13
Anyone have tips and tricks for how to scavenge old laptops and such for very cheap and/or free? Any places I should look online outside of ebay or craigslist, and/or are are brick and mortar computer surplus shops usually worth the price? Dumpster diving tips and tricks are welcome as well, it is legal in my area and I am looking for info on the types of places that may have good oldtech lying around discarded.

>>71264 this is the lamest answer ever but you could go to a thrift store. They never seem to have anything worthwhile but tv's and monitors but if you need one of those then it can be ok.

If you can find them, universities are a goldmine. 1) Student dorms have tons of tech trash / other stuff at semester ends 2) Labs throw away mountains of tech trash 3) Also student apartments, if nicely clustered, at semester ends.

Make ads on facebook and craigslist saying you recycle e-waste. Don't discriminate and very soon you will have a hoard of soykaf you lose your mind trying to get rid of. Right now anything pre-8th gen intel is pretty much going in the trash.

>>71264 There are companies that sell used business laptops. You can get a cheap but still good laptop because businesses throw out "old" hardware on a regular basis,. Raspberry Pi (and clones) are pretty cheap, too.

>>71269 This can work, other times no one ever responds. But when it does work, sometimes you can hit a respectable gold mine. A few examples: 1 time I got a pretty solid Windows 2000 gateway pc that was used by an old farming couple until modern SSL standards got forced on them. 2. A guy called me up willing to sell his old Apple IIc and he really was not sure what it was worth. And really even just looking at the FB marketplace will get you cool results. One time I picked up a classic 128k Macintosh for $30 with it's carrying case and everything. And if something is too expensive, people are used to getting lowballed on the marketplace, I was able to get a Macintosh Performa with it's accessories for $40 one time because I straight up told the guy that it looked like it was stored in poor conditions for a long period of time, and it was. It was dirty and did not turn on. Just know what you are getting. Repairing old PC's is hard to profit on unless you're that guy who used to run computer surplus and have a fuarrrking gigantic warehouse full of retro PC parts.

>>71297 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dumpster_diving#Legal_status Believe it or not, there are other countries in the world, and they have different laws than your own. You type like soykaf and your world view is incredibly small. Why are you even here?

Where I work there is an IT service and a tech trash from whiwh I scavage old computers and parts. With some time, by bororowing some RAM here, some videocard there I can assemble a free puter I just have to buy new hard disks because here they are systematicaly destroyed for obvious security. Previous posts give pretty valuable answers.

>>71298 >can work depends where you advertise or put it, my advice would be try trailer parks and country clubs. both tend to elderly demos, and the two personality types who have soykaf they want to offload are opposites but there. one is hoarders trying to slack some of the hoard and opposite is some nigga who is like so hyper efficient about everything they can't tolerate an old unused computer in their house. >marketplace Is what craigslist used to be since when something goes on marketplace someone is literally just trying to get rid of it and they don't want to deal with the bullshit from scrapers on craigslist, plus it, links directly to their fb so they can respond and send soykaf asap.

Hey, OP here. I ended up getting a soykaf netbook from a lady in a local "buy nothing" group and she said when she upgrades her current laptop she'll let me have that. Thanks for all the suggestions, will keep them in mind because I have a bunch of old hardware I need to replace with slightly less old hardware lol

>>71297 you didnt get the hint: ur an autistic soy eating fuccing faggit for even acknowledging such laws. there are zero places in the world where u will actually get in trouble for this. the rare exception being if u extremely unluckily happen to bump into another cross eyed autist as a cop who decides to enforce such a dumb law that mainly only exists in ur heads like imagine a cop who instead of eating doughnuts and checking out of work and occasionally shooting a bad guy, goes and makes sure nobody looked inside the trash the second part of the hint was that this thread is DOA like everything else on lain because OP has proven himself to be an inept fuccing idiot who focuses on extremely peripheral concerns of almost no relevance i have hookups where i get used CRTs. i have all the highest end monitors ever made before 2010. im not gonna even write about it here because this place is full of complete retards like you. it will just make more retards ruin the supply and waste it on LARPing >u type like shyt u talk like a fucbrain who thinks having good grammar makes you superior to others or saves the wh*te race or some dumbfucc pea brain idea, when its clearly the other way around here since i just proved that you are less than normal whereas i am at least normal

>>71297 >thats the stupidest flockin thing ive heard 2day yeah me too. Which country makes it illegal to search in the trash/dumpster? >>71264

>>71502 An admirable take would be that laws against dumpster diving exist to protect people's privacy (you can learn a massive number of things about people by digging through their trash); however, these are mostly the product of don't-be-poor-near-me ordinances that get implemented in gentrified areas.

>>71264 Every local school district and municipality has stores where they will every once in a while sell the old technology once issued to the public sectors. SWIM has heard of some old police laptops ending up in these types of places without the hard drives wiped. /thread

>>71264 Speaking as a SysAdmin who never throws anything away, try getting in touch with a companies IT department. I've usually got all sorts of old shyte kicking about as "emergency spares" that I honestly pretend don't exist. Hell, I've got 25 old desktops and two old blades sitting in the serverroom (read: graveyard) waiting to be used. As long as you stress that you don't want the hard drives, I can't imagine any other SysAdmin shooting you down. Not sure about the rest of the rest of the world but in bongland we have to pay to have our tech stuff recycled. Personally I'd sooner sell it to someone yhstd use it.

>>71520 Don't be crass. The real reason is PII. Also, anyone can pull up and throw nefarious things in the trash cans of businesses they're not supposed to - like dead fuarrrking bodies and soykaf.

You can always call your local pc repair shops if they're full or overflooed with e-waste. As long as you're polite you're gonna have a solid chance of being allowed to search through what they have. I've gotten a dell server pc with 2 xeons and 32 giggles of ram that way; as well as an r9 390. Had a psuedo vr able machine in two seperate trips to two separate stores.

>>71268 protip: find out where the chinese students stay, they often get top shelf soykaf to use for one semester, then throw it out and replace it next semester. literal goldmine.
