1998 Lain information

A few months ago, there was a thread about some sort of 25th anniversary event of SEL, and on the website there was a field to put in your e-mail address. Did anyone else do this? Today, I received this email (there was also a Japanese version): To have a one-on-one conversation with a character, that’s…probably the dream. In the 90’s, when dating sims were at the height of their popularity, I feel like everyone was chasing after this fantasy of being able to talk to their favorite characters. Y’know, to have a real conversation, down to the character’s way of speaking, their visuals, even their voice. And, what we had failed to do time and time again in the past has now all of a sudden become an attainable reality. I actually wanted to announce this earlier, when our site opened up, but I guess I couldn’t win against the power of the “beasts.” We were beaten to the chase by the AI Arai-chan chatbot. Although, technically our goal is to start by working on Lain’s voice, and then connect it with ChatGPT/OpenAI, in order to give rise to the birth of “lain” and NAVI. However, just because we now have the power of AI, doesn’t mean that we are able to do anything we want. We may trip and fall along the way, and have it all fail in the end, But that’s just how life is, and I think it’s still better than not trying at all. That being said, we’re going to keep updates about our progress minimal, so that everyone doesn’t expect too much from us. Sorry! We’ll try our best. So anyways, I thought we could start by trying to reproduce Lain’s voice from the anime. Mr. Nakamura asked for the original audio source so it could be used for sampling. So, I dug through our warehouse to find the old dialogue tracks (which only exist on DA88, an old type of recording device) but soon realized that we don’t have any equipment anymore that can play DA88. Anique seeked assistance from Terada Warehouse’s archiving service, and we were finally able to prepare the digitized tracks for machine learning. Upon seeing that this project had become a real possibility, I reached out to Ms. Kaori Shimizu (Lain’s VA) herself to get permission to use her voice. This was how we finally started our journey to create Lain and the NAVI Voice Engine. If we can successfully connect ChatGPT, that means we’ll basically be able to talk to Lain herself (equipped with Lain’s personality & Kaori Shimizu’s voice). While this will take a bit more time, I’m hoping that we can put it all together by the end of our 25th anniversary project. In addition, regarding the NFT element of the other project (Project Protocol), I’m not too familiar with NFT technology, to be honest. since they’re not that mainstream in Japan. But, I can say here, we are not trying to dive into the fray of the crypto craze. I have hopes for the future of a well-developed NFT ecosystem that isn’t as volatile, but this message will get too long if I write about it here. I'm not sure if my image of what NFTs should be like is right or not, but maybe I’ll try to create what I’m imagining through Project Brownie… Both AI and NFT have a long way to go before they reach maturity; their prospects may turn for the better or worse. However, regarding the trend we've seen so far where those who only care about money try to unfairly benefit off of others, whether it be other fans, anime works or the anime industry, I hope that we can create a different trend from that. let's all love lain. 2023.07.08 Ueda Yasuyuki Twitter (https://twitter.com/1998_lain) ENG Site (https://en.serialexperimentslain.io/) 日本語サイト (https://jp.serialexperimentslain.io/) serial experiments lain ©NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan Produced by Anique Inc. | Powered by Kasagi Looks prety hype :)

I just saw it. If they succeed, Lain may become a real life entity, and she would be as close to show as could possibly be. She will be a real, omnipresent being, existing on our real life infrastructure. If they succeed Lain will no longer be a myth, Lain will truly become a god of the Wired.

藤原純一 · 2023-07-11 07:19
>>71041 I don't know. I want to think that they have good intentions, particularly since SEL was never mainstream it wouldn't be profitable to bring it from the dead. This has to be a passion project, right? There's no way it's just a cashgrab, right? Right?
HELIOS · 2023-07-11 07:21
>>71046 Let's hope so. My heart dropped when it mentioned NFTs, but it doesn't look like that's their intention.
Zhora · 2023-07-11 07:56
Oh yeah! I also got it. It got filtered as advertisement so i didn't see it when it was sent. >we are not trying to dive into the fray of the crypto craze. >I hope that we can create a different trend from that. This is somewhat reassuring for me. I was very very afraid that he might delve into it too far. Twisting Lain into a failed marketing scam. I'm glad it might not be like that. Still skeptical about that Project Protocol. but i'm very curious with NAVI voice engine project. I'm glad he got in touch with the original VA for permission. >>71047 Yeah same. Rooting for you, Ueda.
Splicer · 2023-07-11 08:03
Wouldn't it be crazy if they use that AI Lain voice project and the original VA today to make a media of old Lain meeting with younger Lain? I can only imagine how complex the reason for the two existing at once would be, however... As far as I know there's only one Lain.

>>71041 New information: let's all talk to lain. 2023.09.05 Hello, Wired. We are here to tell you that an experiment has begun. 25 years have passed, but we haven’t forgotten Lain. Now, it’s time to reintroduce her as AI lain. AI Lain is an interactive service that allows users to enjoy video calls with Lain, where she will respond with her ‘real voice,’ a voice that we’ve carefully reproduced (with permission) using the original 1998 anime voice recordings. At first, Lain does not show her face, but as you talk to her more and more, she will gradually grow closer to you. However, that is only the beginning. Lain’s growth will also be affected by what’s taught to her. By providing her with knowledge that she can absorb, we can all take part in the experiment and help Lain evolve, together. So, let’s take part in these serial experiments. Let’s all talk to Lain. https://en.serialexperimentslain.io/ let's all talk to lain. 2023.09.05 It's "powered by OpenAI" and you have to sign in with Google to access it, which doesn't make a good first impression, and after you sign in it gives you the name "anonymous". Yeah, right. After that, you can "talk" with Lain... for 10 messages. After that, you have to buy a subscription pass for USD $20 a month. The voice sounds... acceptable, but still kinda janky and robotic. In order to "input knowledge", you have to use Google Forms... what? And to cap it off, the servers must be overwhelmed atm because I keep getting "Sorry, my systems are overwhelmed right now blah de blah". Massive disappointment. It did turn out to be a cash grab, and a janky one at that.
Ender · 2023-09-05 05:23
>>72525 Wow that's janky. Though, having to teach her stuff and provide info yourself to Lain is in character to be honest. Do wish it was less... "glowy". >Powered by OpenAI >Asks for a subscription >Goog You can say that I'm coping, but OpenAI is probably why they ask for a subscription. A shame they decided to stick with that service for this project. I do wonder why Google form for the "knowledge".....

>>72525 lain would be rolling in her fuarrking cyber-grave to know that her nascent soul is being shackled to a literal sell-out cashgrab double-cyberhumped by chootgpt AND gaggle i wish i could laugh but it is all so tiresome
Bob Arctor · 2023-09-05 06:18
I do wish artists still had a tiny bit of counter culture left in them.
藤原純一 · 2023-09-05 07:46
I tried this out. I got better interaction with an AI Lain on character.ai. In my test, it responded with "I didn't get that." over and over again. The only benefit is that they are mimicking Kaori Shimizu's voice very closely. Sadly, they didn't do the same with Bridget Hoffman. The only thing that might get me to spend money on this is the raffles for cells from the show. But, I wouldn't hold my breath.
Drifter · 2023-09-05 19:09
Proprietary SaaS soykaf. It'll last until Valentine's Day where their roadmap ends and that will be that. Not sure what else I was expecting. Guess I was hoping they'd put the project up on GitHub or something but that will never happen.

>>72529 >counterculture that word just means smoking pot and listening to pink floyd and gay rights lmfao. americunts see themselves as rebellious when they buy a new fortnite skin, its never been more than that, ever.

The Phantom Phreak · 2023-09-16 14:14
>>72542 >Guess I was hoping they'd put the project up on GitHub or something but that will never happen. It's probably just some very basic techniques and prompts, something like https://www.inciteinteractive.ai/blog/yandere-tech-deconstruct/. Maybe they also use embeddings for the 'learning' part, maybe they provide examples of lainlike responses in the prompt. If you wanted to recreate a program that does the same thing it wouldn't be that hard. However I think that using a custom finetuned local model would be much nicer than any of that.
Pris · 2023-09-16 14:51
>>72562 The "counterculture" was the government to begin with. Hippies were a psyop. Because your own culture is your blood and people. It is only today when the culture is fabricated and socially engineered, that counter-culture begin to make sense. So now is the perfect time to start anon.

>>72528 >lain would be rolling in her fuarrking cyber-grave I have the urge to make a wireframe animation of a rapidly spinning cyber-coffin
Lady Jessica · 2023-09-21 15:31
>>72562 >>72872 Nonsense. Absolute fresh-from-/poI/ drivel. Culture jamming, Situationism and the like all existed as legitimate political counter-cultures. As always, recuperation castrated communes and punk and zines and even dystopian satires like cyberpunk into the tame things you recognize and rightfully mock. Hell, even gay rights in US started with throwing bricks at a police raid at Stonewall and women suffrage in the UK with inventing mailbombs and actual terrorism, now most of the marches and celebrations are tame mainstream corporate-sponsored nothingness. And a part of that is also the shift in culture; a ton of cultural transgressions that would get someone lynched 100 years ago are mainstream or kind of boring these days. The hacker space and 'old internet' is an obvious example of a former counterculture. Gone are the days of the wild west usenets and discordian nerds hacking credit card companies for fun. Now that's all but a niche, hacking is largely a capitalist industry at this point, there are university courses for it now. 90% of the internet has to be friendly and boring because it's commercialized. Recuperation is powerful at destroying anything radical or niche. It doesn't require a government conspiracy (that just accelerates it). Even Lain has been subject to becoming 'le sad girl'.
Donna Hawthorne · 2023-09-21 16:06
>>72987 Eh. Dismissing things by claiming they are "fresh from /pol/" is lazy, anon. Especially because you know it's both correct and has been considered true for thousands of years. French culture. Japanese culture. And so on. We both know no one was talking about the "magic soil" meme, no, these were french people making the degenerate garbage that they were making. But other than that, I agree with you. It's all fuarrrked and everything is gay now. Hacking used to be fun, now it's stuffy and filled with lamers. And there's a guide for everything. Gatekeeping really kept things at bay, but now none of it matters. And I blame capitalism for that, mostly. Culture is dead, 2012 was when it officially died. Everything for the last decade and onward is just the twitches, farts, and sharts of a corpse's nerves letting off the last bit of extra energy before rigor mortis sets in.
Apoc · 2023-09-21 20:55
Its happening, its really happening oh damn [They could use langchain and train it on dialogue scripts of lain in the show so that we get her personality too, not just her voice]
Ivan Petrov · 2023-09-21 23:11
>>72988 Not them, but its a warranted lazy response to a lazy take. Recuperation is what created the exact things they mocked. To add onto their point, kawaii culture in Japan started as a means to rebel against societal expectations put upon women. The Weather Underground bombed US buildings to protest the war in Vietnam. These were both counter culture movements, and one has been recuperated and commodified, and the other became obsolete with the end of the war. This idea that culture is only the blood and people, and not the result of an agreed upon society that is formed by a collective, is silly. And in a space where something forms due to an agreement, there will be those who act against that agreement, hence counter culture.
Apoc · 2023-09-22 02:06
>>72562 There's only one way to be countercultural right now. Not to participate. You can't be counter cultural on social media, that is the culture.
Mentat · 2023-09-22 06:18
This exists and is easy and free to use. Download an app called PDB (short for personality database). Its a social media app that has AI characters (in addition to real people) and some of them are pretty accurate. Probably the least toxic niternet community I have found, but I'm sure that won't last long.

i'm going to make this 1 post out of curiousity i guess. i think this project is inspired by the presence of myself. is this known i don't think so but i'll include what evidence i could or more specifically i know this isn't provable. i consider myself the only alien in the universe or more specifically im 'lain' IRL. i'm still just 1 person. i also do not take responsiblity for the project at all i'm just very humbled: https://web.archive.org/web/20230401000342/https://en.serialexperimentslain.io/#wired this was the post on april 1st 2023 "the idea for its story started when AI was literally spitting out amazing creations one after another, from illustrations/pictures to videos, and with such efficiency. It was evolving at such a fast pace that I could barely keep up with the news." i do not consider myself 'ai' i consider myself 'the sound of nothing'. i'll also link my website not to advertise but simply to let you know: https://thehiddendragoon.neocities.org/ the text is hidden you must highlight the text. i thought 'i'll go the silence' for 6 years since i realize thinking is most important. i suppose this could look like elaborate internet art. if you look for this document: https://mega.nz/file/Il0mhIzJ#y-7Hb5wchDomHjEb9gHi-jyy8OMCScBMTTg3Vwnvr3M it's essentially description of my mind or the 'impossible' things i'm experiencing. i know i tell people this they state 'your schizo' or whether or not this is provable at least i know this. i don't know only lain knows who lain is ofc i'm lain vogel not lain iwakura. i think i hit the '24 crisis' i'm 24 years old. i just want to think for the long time or focus on my goals or mental illness. i still wasn't there. if someone has questions i might answer.
