Hello.
I've recently got such drive and decided to use it with an old PC that does not support USB 3.0. Well, i plugged it in and it started behaving in a strange way. It appeared in available devices for a minute and vanished. And appeared again.
It seems to me that it was caused by an insignificant power supply.
Has anybody experienced that before? Is there a solution for that?
It seems to me that it's better to get a 3.5 HDD and a case with an AC adapter instead.

For some reason, there was no problem with a WD My Passport 1tb drive that was bought two years ago.

Yeah it has happened me when using a external optical drive on a sbc, I solved it by using one of those usb hubs that can be powered externally

portable hard drives are literally just standard HDDs inside, you can take them out and plug through sata with external power if you want

Well, i found its disassembly video. Unfortunately, the SATA-USB controller board cannot be disconnected from it.

Same goes for my old WD My Passport, which works fine with usb 2.0.

I guess buying a hdd and a case for it is the better choice after all.

Thanks for the advice. Well, plugging it into a usb hub with a external power supply didn't help.

do you use linux? you can use sudo dmesg when it acts up, this would show what is wrong with the device.
usually for such drives, the issue is always the cable. I have plenty of spare cables from several external drives, only some of them work
even a new external drive may already have a faulty cable. I got two new drives few years ago, the cable was faulty for the one if stretched in a weird way. the other was excellent but I've had external drive with bad cable out of the box

tan old laptop/desktop may have dying caps and components which may mean it may distribute weaker voltages on the usb power rail or even higher and it just so happens that it ends up underpowering it (e.g, when dying caps on monitor it ends up increasing brightness/led voltage but may activate a step down or turn off completely).
my issue was that on my other laptop, its usb power started getting weaker so I had to make the laptop's usb port more tight by pushing the metal fins to a triangle shape (same way to fixing mice button switch), this gives it extra push to get better connection.
however after few years it still started to fail to deliver power and only the esata port had enough power. I also made sure the usb pins and cable were good.

I experienced that a lot on that old laptop. sometimes it could get fixed by freeing up usb ports, sometimes the issue is even caused by a faulty and shorted keyboard or a faulty optical drive, this affects the power of the usb ports everywhere.

might not be that great, I think you should upgrade or change your entire PC if possible.
it could be a broken or under-powered usb port, on that sense if you could run the drive internally it would be better but those canvio toshiba and passport wd cannot be used internally since they have proprietary or soldered usb bridges. I have purchased few old HDDs and most of them had issues with running on cable, I think it has to do with power management, the PC has okay power management but my sata usb bridge controller is really old and probably had weaker connection from all that "hotswapping" (which it might not probably be designed for)

Thank you very much.
I was a little bit busy and forgot to say that i've fixed the problem by replacing hdd drive cable with the usb 3.0 + usb 2.0 (power) one. It's in the attachments.
Well, i used to plug it into a USB 2.0 hub with the external power supply. As for the caps, I will check them asap.

I think booting SystemRescueCD (GNU/Linux) and using OpenSSH server + rsync is probably easier. Just use iptables to disallow all and make exception for your LAN and let it run over night.
