>get one of these
>nobody actually cracked it to run steam OS
is like kicking dead whales down the beach, the encryption keys apparently leaked in 2020 but nothing happened. it's got an interesting looking AMD APU with not a bad GPU but it's bound to a $20 dev licence, the DirectX API, and licensed peripherals. kind of a shame to return it to ewaste, is anyone working on a port?
Zero Cool · 2023-06-22 11:29
just devmode it and run emula, that's what they're made for

Microsoft is maybe second only to Apple in locking their hardware. Fat chance it will ever run a FOSS OS. Just play it.
XERXES · 2023-06-24 13:04
to be honest I imagine the reason it hasn't been hacked is just lack of interest. No exclusives, reliance on online, and the (watered down) ability to run homebrew out of the box helped kill the scene.
Just buy a normal computer, there hasn't been a single reason to own an Xbox in over a decade. You can even get a console like form factor and a controller friendly front-end if that's your thing.

You still can't softmod a 360 in the current year. Xbone CFW fuarrrking never.

yeah but the RGH mod is just putting a single resistor across two points, on the hardest revision one's a bga pin and the other's a via.
Lain Iwakura · 2023-06-24 19:33
What would be the point of running e.g. Linux on it? The CPU is extremely underpowered even for when it was announced and that's all you're likely to get out of it. Sell it on ebay and upgrade to something with a mid 2010s i5.
Mario Rossi · 2023-06-24 21:54
Likely because absolutely nobody gives a soykaf about the xbone and what >>70607 said. Sorry man it's just not happening.
Lunch · 2023-07-09 00:48
the APU might be vulnerable to this https://github.com/jevinskie/amd-lm32-smu-exploit
Hagbard Celine · 2023-07-10 00:55
There's a security chip preventing it from running unsigned code and some efuses, software side there's a hypervisor since the 360 if I remember correctly, definitely lack of interest, it was built to be a maze with the potential of frying/locking itself.
BloodCat · 2023-07-31 09:02
even the PS4 scene is fuarrrking dead now after the 9.00 exploit. I bought a PS4 Pro last year on 9.60 expecting an exploit by this point.
at this point console hacking is dead. the only ones that do exploit are trannies who sit on an exploit without releasing it

I was hoping the series s would get cracked as Microsoft uses them as a loss leaders and so you'd basically get a really good subsidized mini-pc.
Wasn't that basically what happened to the original Xbox? I missed the whole scene but I remember them being really popular to turn into desktops/servers after they were cracked.

there's no point because the CPU is literally atom-tier. you can build a $100 PC that's better than an xbox. At least the PS5 or XSX would make good mid-tier PCs
Marly Krushkhova · 2023-07-31 22:40
It's just x86, that's why the 'just buy a pc' argument makes sense, as others have pointed out, it's the equivalent of an overclocked atom cpu.
In comparison the other consoles had trivial ways of breaking them and the entire scene starts building on stuff that's already been broken.
>>71580
What was used for servers and cluster stuff was the PPC generation (360/PS3) because it was closer to being a fringe hipster architecture.

You're replying to a topic about the original Xbone, a 1.8GHz low end laptop APU with good graphics. Yes, the Series S would be a great value if it wasn't gimped through artificial limitations.

That was the US military that built a cluster of PS3s. I never looked into it but I bet there was some marketing shenanigans there

It has plenty of worthwhile games.

would a 2020 laptop with a Ryzen 5 and Vega 6 graphics run Linux and PC games better than an Xbox or PS4?

>still works, still supported, games are dirt cheap

It ran linux and it wasnt just us mil. The ps3 had excellent computing power / $ and could also run linux which was the reason plenty people used it for pure calculation power - it was simply an economic choice if you were in the right niche to utilize it.
