Tech Questions #11
Old thread: >>64140
Ask your simple questions in this thread.
Be sure to also check out the documentation of the distro/program you are having trouble with. ArchWiki is a good resource even if you do not use Arch Linux. For learning basic GNU/Linux skills, check out this free book: https://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php
If you are new to GNU/Linux, I recommend you pick a distro that's easy to use (such as Xubuntu or Linux Mint). The easiest way to try Linux is to use a VirtualBox (a VM) or to install GNU/Linux as second OS on your computer (this is called "dual-booting"). I recommend you use Windows disk management tools to shrink a partition (reserve at least ~30GB or more for GNU/Linux). If you don't use Windows, you can use gparted to do the partitioning. You can use Rufus for making the installation USB flash drive.

Do not make a R*ddit clone! R*ddit is like kicking dead whales down the beach. The "karma" points cause people to believe a poster just because he has more forum points than another poster. Upvotes have a similar problem and (in addition) they encourage posters to downvote posts just because they disagree with them (in practice, this means that posting new points of view is discouraged by the design of the site). After all, it's much easier to downvote than to write a reply that's well-written and debunks the points that one disagrees with. Account registration means that some posters just won't post on your site because they do not want to make an account.

How do I register a domain name anonymously? I use namecheap to register my domains with the privacyguard thing on which hides the whois information. How to truly get a domain anonymously so that the government can never find out. Just curious :)

A straw purchase.
Buy cryptocurrency and pay a teenager to buy a prepaid card with cash, and then use the card to register the domain.
I say teenager because if it's a minor they won't get charged as hard even if they somehow get caught buying a card.

How to share a directory with www-data?
So I have a few Laravel PHP projects. And when in production, they are owned by www-data recursively... I just realized I only wanted to give www-data permission to logs, cache and public folder.
If I want to run some commands on my application, I have to take permission back from www-data to my current user if that command, say, requires caching something or writing to logs. Or I can just sudo run those commands. My question is how can I co-own the files with www-data? Is it good practice? What is best practice?

>self-hosting from your PC
Your specs are fine but I do not recommend it for these reasons:
(0) getting a domain and a cheap VPS doesn't usually cost that much
(1) the energy bill
(2) you want to separate your own data and the server (helps as protection against successful crackers)
(3) this may or may not affect you, but some ISPs make self-hosting hard because they block some ports.
>hardware failures
If you have proper cooling (fans) then the only thing you need to worry about are (possibly) the PSU in the long run and your SSD(s) and HDD(s) that wear down. There are special NAS HDDs that are meant to be powered on 24/7., Also, I recommend you get thunderbolt protection and a UPS (note that a laptop doesn't need a UPS).
Raspberry Pi 4 would be a much better choice but note that it has limited HW power. On the other hand, it's affordable (you can get Raspberry Pi 400 for 100€ and it has everything you need) and the electricity bill won't be as high as it consumes a lot less energy. Another option is to get an used business laptop but a Raspberry Pi/a clone is perfect for starting to self-host at home. But before you buy or set up anything, try seeding a torrent (for example Linux iso) for 24-48 (or more) hours and see if your PC gets any issues (check temps) and you also need to test whether the sound of your computer bothers you (especially when you are reading or when you are sleeping).

The official model is a window has a thread with a queue for input, does every app follow this sheme?
I've been wondering if there was a way to tell hardware sources for input apart. Ive already checked mouse vs digital pen but that seems to be done by a flag on digital pen input so not applicable to something what if you have a touchpad+pen both using same flag.

I have a motherboard with integrated Intel® Celeron® Dual core N6210 CPU. I tried to run different OSes (at least 3 different linux distros and a BSD distro) as guest OSes in qemu. I use absolutely the same software (arch linux with every necessary packages) for host as on my large PC (Ryzen CPU). The Virtualization is enabled in BIOS. On my large PC, every guest OSes i've tried so far worked perfectly fine, on the small Celeron PC, it doesn't work. There isn't any crash, error message, or such, but it's just so extremely slow, that it is unusable. I'm not talking about simple annoying slowness, i mean it took more than 1.5 hours to reach the livecd environment welcome screen of a virtual livecd. Trying to install it would be impossible, just as trying to use it if it somehow managed to success withing several days. The Celeron of course is severalfold slower than a middle class Ryzen, but this kind of extreme slowness is impossible to be linked to that. The host OS on the Celeron PC runs perfectly fine without any slowness. I gave all the recommended virtual hardware capacity (RAM, etc) to the guest OSes, and i observed in the host OS, that they are not exhausted at all. Qemu didn't use significantly large amount of hardware resources, while this was happening.
Any idea, dear lainons, why could this happen and how to solve it if it is solvable? Thanks for any help.

The new PC I'm putting together will have two 1 TB SSD drives I'm planning to save for essential or frequently used software and two 16 TB HDD I want to switch between for dual booting. Though if I installed an OS to either SSD but ran software from harddisk, would I still see the performance improvement SSDs are used for?
Jane Doe · 2023-04-25 09:28
>>68874
I recommend you use the SSDs for your operating systems. At least install Windows on a SSD because GNU/Linux loads much faster even if you installed it on a HDD. But do not put swap partition or swap files on a SSD because it would cause it to wear down faster! As a side note, you do not even need to have swap if you don't want to suspend on disk. If you worry about low-memory conditions, you should buy more RAM instead and optionally use earlyoom daemon. However, having a small swap partition (say 512Mib if you do not suspend on disk) can have some benefits according to a systemd developer: https://chrisdown.name/2018/01/02/in-defence-of-swap.html
To get ideal amount of swap for suspending on disk: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq#How_much_swap_do_I_need.3F
But you can always just not have a swap partition/swap file and you can use suspend on RAM instead and just power down your PC when you aren't using it for longer periods of time. In my opinion, the boot time of GNU/Linux is so short that you don't even need to install it on a SSD but if you are concerned about boot times, you can make it even faster by just using SSD for your both operating systems. If you are unsure, just test it by installing GNU/Linux on a HDD first (you can then use gparted on a Linux LiveUSB to nuke everything and create a new GPT partition table). Also, swap is not good (or even useful) for low-memory conditions because it's just too slow and it's better to either crash (and potentially automatically make Linux reboot on kernel panics) or let OOM daemon do it's thing (if you want to have control over it, you need to use an (additional) user-space OOM daemon).
>Though if I installed an OS to either SSD but ran software from harddisk, would I still see the performance improvement SSDs are used for?
If you have OS installed on a SSD, you will have fast boot times. But if you install software on a HDD, the program in question will load slower vs, if you installed it on the SSD instead. But this only matters for large programs (like games).
Also, if you had a PC called "foo" with 2 HDDs and a PC called "bar" with just 1 HDD, the PC called "foo" (with 2 HDDs) would be a bit faster than bar (with otherwise identical specs).

I've recently decided to rewrite my nvim config in lua. It naturally involves splitting it in a bunch of files.
Doing vim ~/.config/nvim/init.vim was pretty bad but vim ~/.config/nvim/lua/modules/remaps/init.lua is kind of a nightmare . Navigating through vim file explore feature is not too good either. Is there a solution to make it less tedious that doesn't involve aliasing the hell of it and that potentially could work for other configs?

hey all, i wanted some recommendations on server OSes for my personal use, basically host some minetest, irc and xmpp servers, although i'm aware of popular options like debian, ubuntu, opensuse and any other gnu/linux or bsd distro, i wanted to know what do you people use:
I have an old pc, which i would want to make use of, which has 4 GB ram and decent amount of space for my own private irc, xmpp server that i want to host myself
should i use, some sort of hypervisor like Xen?
https://libreserver.org/admin.html this one looks very easy since it has a web panel in it, although i'm completely fine with only terminal, but it looks good and seems like i don't have to put in lot of time configuring things myself, just set things here and there and be done, although i'm unsure of how it actually is, just speculating from the images it has on its site.
the one problem with libreserver is its out of date, the last release for its iso was in 2021, have anyone tried it?
should i use it? or just pick debian? already mentioned that i'm completely fine with cli, but you know, its the convenience we programmers want ;)

Yes. Debian stable is probably the most popular distro for servers. Ubuntu Server or Devuan are also good.

Is Debian Stable decent as babby's first Linux? I know most people would prefer to recommend Debian based systems like Mint or Ubuntu to beginners. Though from what I know it gives the impression of a no frills, general purpose OS that has very thorough QA and "just works." The main downside I see is that the long wait between stable releases means getting stuck with older versions of software for a bit of time.

>Is Debian Stable decent as babby's first Linux?
It's alright if you learn to use the Debian installer's partitioning tool using VirtualBox before you install it (if you want to dual-boot, use Windows disk management tools to shrink a partition). Linux Mint is probably the best newbie distro. The problem with Debian is that they only release security fixes to stable release. But do not use GNOME 3 because it absolutely is like kicking dead whales down the beach. Use Debian installer or tasksel or aptitude to install Xfce4 Desktop Environment or Mate DE.

Don't go for Debian because nobody gets it right the first time trying to wrap their heads around the "non-free" packages stuff before they've had any experience using a package manager like apt. Use Kubuntu. All of the benefits of using a Debian-based distro but its using a DE more familiar to Windows users.

Hey Lainons.
I'm just set up a web server and I want to set a blog, something simple (maybe a static web blogging engine) or based in a Image Board software (I don't know nothing about that). Nothing too fancy. What do you recommend for me?
Jens Hansen · 2023-05-15 11:55
>>69261
Hugo is the modern choice.
LAMP stack (the MP is optional) if you want foundational knowledge.
Finally, writing a webserver in any language with a HTTP library is really easy. You could write a program that dumps HTML into the HTTP library and that's your own custom blogging engine.
Good imageboard software takes far too much setup and maintenance for a personal blog, Simple imageboard software might work, but I wouldn't know which one, try to find one with the easiest installation instructions?

I would've asked this on /sec/'s stickied thread instead, but that one seems to be full. Dumb consumer question I know, but I just want a site that works with my uMatrix blocking all the soykaf ads and whatnot. Are there any reasons to use Debian testing over Fedora? One of the things I read was that Debian testing did not receive security updates regularly. In addition, you had to make a couple of tweaks to get these updates. I am not fully knowledgeable enough to make a judgement on this, but it appears that testing is not intended for regular desktop-use. I may be wrong on this, though.
>>Compared to stable and unstable, next-stable testing has the worst security update speed. Don't prefer testing if security is a concern.

Otherwise, what other distributions are there for someone who wants newer packages that are not full-on bleeding edge like Arch Linux but are not as old as Debian stable?
Dr. X · 2023-05-19 22:16
>>69322
I'm going to be honest with you. Most of the time "Bleeding edge" doesn't really mean anything. There are certain softwares (yt-dlp) that are inteded to only be used when they're "bleeding edge", but that just means it's the latest version and that's usually something you want. I get what you mean when you're saying "bleeding edge", but Arch isn't bleeding edge, it's just a poorly ran distro. I don't mean to start a flame war here, but even Arch users, when they're honest, will admit it. It's just not a considerate distro.
>Debian-testing vs Fedora
That's two separate schools of thought here, right? Debian-testing is basically for the developers of Debian. Just avoid it. If you use debian (which I don't recommend due to the sheer volume of issues with a low return. But, of course, it's ultimately your choice.) you'll want to just use sid (unstable.) -- Ironically, sid is the most stable option, I've found. Of course, it still requires a lot of modification for that stability... and, granted, that's my usecase and it could be very different for you.
Now with that said, I haven't touched Fedora since we were on Linux-3.9 or so, but I did find Fedora to be alright when it comes to security and such. I don't have much to say on the matter, but I think most people who use it today seem to just think of it as redhat experience lol. I guess they're technically right but... Well, it doesn't matter.
>Otherwise, what other distributions are there for someone who wants newer packages that are not full-on bleeding edge like Arch Linux but are not as old as Debian stable?
I personally find Gentoo to be very beginner friendly, provided the beginner has some slight experience with basic commands and isn't afraid to read the manual on the website (or ask questions.) -- But this also requires you to either be patient (for compiling) or have a relatively decent cpu + plenty of ram. Outside of that, I enjoyed OpenSuSe (It used to be a contender for replacing Fedora, I don't know how it is now.), I hear that Mint is good and Manjaro is basically Arch but kinder.
I don't have much else to say but I hope it helped in one way or another, even if it just leads to more questions.
Nemissa · 2023-05-20 02:34
>>69322
>Are there any reasons to use Debian testing over Fedora?
Yes:
* On Debian testing, you don't need to do any release upgrades.
* Debian ships codecs, on Fedora you need to use the 3rd-party RPF Fusion repo
* Debian has larger repos and it supports more architectures.
* Fedora may or may not be the equivalent of Windows Insider Program but for Red Hat Linux.
* SELinux can be sometimes a pain in the ass if you program. Apparmor has better usability.
> but it appears that testing is not intended for regular desktop-use
Desktop use is literally the use-case for both testing and unstable. I ran Debian testing for a year and it just works. As a safeguard, you may want to have apt-listbugs package installed.
>Otherwise, what other distributions are there ...
Gentoo and Alpine Linux. The only caveat is that Alpine Linux uses musl and proprietary programs work poorly on a musl system.

The standard UNIX programs are all lightweight. Some even prefer to use Perl to replace Sed and Awk, which is actually fine, too. If you don't need AWK to easily accomplish your task, you shouldn't use it (or Perl). Also, a side note: If someone is interested in learning the standard UNIX tools, I recommend you start with grep and then learn Sed and finally AWK.

>The standard UNIX programs are all lightweight. Some even prefer to use Perl to replace Sed and Awk, which is actually fine, too.
>If you don't need AWK to easily accomplish your task, you shouldn't use it (or Perl).
So, you are saying to avoid using languages like awk or perl when another tool could be used?
This makes sense, but one source said that using awk was quicker with what I'm doing. But I guess generally, avoiding awk or perl (which seem like larger programs) is good advice?
>Also, a side note: If someone is interested in learning the standard UNIX tools, I recommend you start with grep and then learn Sed and finally AWK.
Yes I have a decent understanding of regex and I use sed substitutions and grep searches a lot.
I also try to use ed if I'm editing files in automation, e.g.:
```
ed file <<EOF
s/^text/
c
whatever
.
wq
EOF
```

You can use a Raspberry Pi 4 (or something similar) and make it. In fact, they are selling it as a product called Raspberry Pi 400. But making an actual PC would be impossible because there is no way you can fit even the smallest mobo inside a keyboard.

I recommend you learn basic Linux skills by working through this free book: https://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php (for practical Windoze stuff, check out a book called "Learn Windows PowerShell in a month of lunches", there are also some vids on YT by the author.). Also, start dual-booting GNU/Linux (I recommend Linux Mint) and Windows ASAP. Download the Linux Mint iso file (Mate or Xfce4 version) and use Rufus to make a flash drive for installing it. But before rebooting, use Windows disk management tools to shrink a partition (reserve about 30GB or more for Linux), and point Linux Mint installer to the newly reclaimed free space.
For learning computer networking, check out "Computer Networking: a Top Down Approach" by Kurose and Ross , or "Computer Networks" by AST. I'm not aware of any free resources for learning Cisco IOS (I can't remember if Cisco's Packet Tracer requires a product key?).

I have Samsung 870 EVO 500GB SSD. Recently when I was setting up my backup program on, Torvalds forgive me, Windows. It was reading files in a folder on an NTFS partition and when it encountered four big archives (~10GiB) it reported an error on two of them. It was a standard Windows error complaining about invalid CRC, thought there were no actual checksums anywhere and it's just a relic of Windows. Google said that this error indicates disk corruption, which is obvious. After I booted in Linux and ddrescued the SSD onto another drive. Ddrescue said that the it has ~4000KiB of dead sectors spanning over ~650 bad areas. This is strange because it is only 1.5y old and had 3.382TiB of writes out of 5y and 300TB guaranteed by Samsung. SMART report is ok as far as I understand. And from what I'v googled some people say it is normal for an SSD to have thousands of bad sectors? Others say even one bad sector means a dead SSD.
As far a I understand it may not be enough to ask for replacement. If this is true this is fuarrrked up, because how I'm supposed to use a hard drive if after half a year files and potentially filesystem start to die. The fact is than the popular filesystems (NTFS, EXT4, APFS) fail not only to repair corrupted files, they fail to even detect them lacking checksums and scrubbing. Am I supposed to run every drive with RAIDZ or BTRFS with data duplication or what? Or recover from backups on schedule?
I could "fake" SMART report by repeatedly reading dead sectors and skyrocketing UNC count which is already 21436 from ddrescue, and then asking for a replacement but it's kinda stupid.

You don't need one if you use startx (or just type the name of your wayland compositor (like "sway") and press the enter key).
Before you can use startx, you need to set up xinit:
doas pacman -S xorg-xinit
cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc
$EDITOR ~/.xinitrc
#Comment out the lines at the bottom that start some programs and twm and change them to the programs you want. Make sure that the LAST line starts your WM, it should look something like exec ratpoison or exec startxfce4
After this you can just use startx command. You may want to follow these instructions also: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xinit#xserverrc (the greenbox, add -nolisten tcp (at least) and possibly -nolisten local)
If you want a easy DM, just install LightDM or ly.

I trust the Debian project more to not mess up any updates and that it will push security patches quickly (but that being said, I haven't heard anything bad about Raspberry Pi OS in this regard). >I want to buy a new computer.
Building your own PC saves money in the long run and it's fun hobby thing. You will also get the parts you want. I recommend you try these sites:
>https://www.logicalincrements.com/
>https://pcpartpicker.com
>https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator
>https://cpu.userbenchmark.com
>https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-specs/
But don't trust any of these sites blindly!
Post your build here to get comments!
Some PC part recommendations:
* Buy a full tower ATX case aka EATX case if you can, so you have a ton of room. I recommend getting a PC case that has dust filters!
* Fractal Design is expensive but good brand
* you can also get a mid-tower case
* Fractal Design Focus G and Fractal Design Focus 2 are good Mid-tower cases.
* Buy a slightly "better" (higher wattage) PSU than you need.
* Buy a Corsair or Seasonic PSU! Do not save money by buying a cheap PSU because cheap PSUs suck.
* Intel and AMD CPUs are almost as good. The choice (Intel vs AMD) doesn't matter much.
* I recommend one of these CPUs: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G, Intel Core i5-13400, Intel Core i5-13500 or AMD Ryzen 5 7600.
* But avoid Nvidia GPUs (intel integrated graphics and all kinds of AMD GPUS just work out-of-box).
* Don't buy Intel Arc GPUs.
* You can start with integrated graphics initially and buy a good GPU later.
* Buy Kingston or G.Skill RAM. They make good quality RAM. I recommend getting 2 x 8GB DDR4/DDR5 (depending on your MoBo) G.Skill RipJaws kit.
* Test your RAM with memtest86+ (included with most Linux distro LiveCDs/LiveUSBs).
* I recommend you get a SSD for your OS and a HDD for your data.
* Buy a large (2+ TB) Toshiba or Western Digital HDD
* I recommend getting a Samsung or Crucial SSD. I think 1TB Crucial MX500 is the best SSD for the price.
I can post an example build later.
>What are the dos and don'ts of buying kompyuta?
Avoid gaming laptops because a laptop is generally good for gaming. Lenovo ThinkPads are great if you are looking for a laptop. If you want to save money and buying used stuff is okay, I highly recommend buying an used Business ThinkPad (regular consumers want money for their used devices, while businesses throw out their devices on a regular basis!).

Okay, here is the example build:
>https://pcpartpicker.com/list/76sdNc
You can save some money by picking a cheaper case. Note that the build also includes an USB wifi adapter. Also, note that the AMD Ryzen 5 5600G CPU has integrated graphics, so you don't need to buy a GPU right now (buy it later). And if you want, you can also replace the stock cooler of AMD Ryzen 5 5600G with ARCTIC Freezer 34 eSports DUO or something else but the stock cooler is good enough.

Would it be a violation of GNU public liscense if you sold computers that came with GNU/Linux pre-installed?
Lunch · 2023-08-06 12:44
>>71731
There are several versions of the GPL, and most Linux distros include a wide variety of software licensed under a few dozen different FOSS licenses. You would need to be in compliance with all of them, and if you aren't confident that you can read, understand, and comply with all of them, you should seek competent legal advice.
That said, the short answer to your question is no, it's not a violation of any of the versions the GPL to sell computers with a Linux distro preinstalled. You would have to do something dumb like modify a GPL program that you ship, but refuse to provide the source code for you to be in violation.
There are companies that sell computers with Linux preinstalled.

idk what all these people are talking about lol
you can pull it off using just curl/wget/whatever but the annoying part that youtube-dl/yt-dlp/etc. takes care of is a) parsing the source code of the video page to find the URL to the actual video and b) casting arcane ffmpeg incantations to put the video and audio streams together into the desired container

Alright, so here's the thing. I want to play Touhou 12 on Arch Linux, but I am having a little trouble. I have wine and winetricks installed with a 32-bit wine prefix. Here is the error that I am getting when I try to open up the game.
info: DXVK: v2.2 info: Vulkan: Found vkGetInstanceProcAddr in winevulkan.dll @ 0x6fa837c0 info: Built-in extension providers: info: Win32 WSI info: OpenVR info: OpenXR info: OpenVR: could not open registry key, status 2 info: OpenVR: Failed to locate module info: Required Vulkan extension VK_KHR_surface not supported 00e8:fixme:service:QueryServiceConfig2W Level 6 not implemented 00e8:fixme:service:QueryServiceConfig2W Level 6 not implemented
I know that this is a vulkan issue. I have dvxk installed through winetricks. In addition I have vulkan-icd-loader, lib32-vulkan-icd-loader, nvidia-utils, and lib32-nvidia-utils installed as recommended. However, it still does not mend the problem. Upon running vulkaninfo, I get this error.
ERROR: [Loader Message] Code 0 : loader_scanned_icd_add: Could not get 'vkCreateInstance' via 'vk_icdGetInstanceProcAddr' for ICD libGLX_nvidia.so.0 ERROR: [Loader Message] Code 0 : vkCreateInstance: Found no drivers! ERROR at /usr/src/debug/vulkan-tools/Vulkan-Tools-1.3.255/vulkaninfo/vulkaninfo.h:676:vkCreateInstance failed with
ERROR_INCOMPATIBLE_DRIVER
The arch wiki recommends to set the environment variable VK_ICD_FILENAMES to /usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json. I have done this, and I have also tried running VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json with the Touhou executable, but it still does not work. In addition, I have also ensured that no conflicting drivers are enabled and have re-installed the existing drivers several times to no avail.
I *think* my GPU is compatible with vulkan (it's on the older side), but I am not entirely sure. I have googled my own GPU, and it is not clear whether it is vulkan-compatible or not; I know that I have had no issues with vulkan and Touhou on previous distributions I have used, and I have had dvxk installed on my previous wine setups. For reference, I am using the NVS 5200m by itself with no optimus.
Despite googling all of these issues and errors and trying different things, I am at a loss. Does anyone have any ideas?

I don't think it's memory: I've had it happen to me as well; anything that tries to do IO simply freezes for seconds a time until the transfer is complete, even though the USB isn't nearly as fast as to saturate my hard drive's bandwidth. Maybe a bad IO scheduler (or scheduler configuration?), but I don't know either.

I want to run a bash script in order to display on cobky the cover album currently playing in cmus.
I use this script based on the one I use for mocp :
#!/bin/bash
filename="$(cmus-remote -Q | grep file)"
dirname="${filename%/*}"
cp "$dirname"/cover.jpg ~/.config/cmus/cover I use grep to get the current file playing path but it gives me :
file /media/g0d/Stockage/Musique/747/2018. Paleo/04. Pangea.mp3 And I want to remove file at the start of the line.
Don't even know if the rest of script is good but I first want to know if it's ok using grep to isolate the result I want then using something to exclude part of the said result to just have the path of the file (maybe using echo ?)
I will then see for the rest of the script.
I'm a newbie regarding bash scripts but learning a bit like this so any good advice are more than welcome. Thanks in advance.

It isn't a crime in the US to possess pirated media afaik, only to distribute it. Even seeding a torrent isn't a "crime", the cases over that (which themselves have almost entirely stopped happening) all happen in civil court and involve a company tracking you down and suing you, the government won't do the legwork unless it's someone involved in running pirate websites etc. I feel very confident that the people at the border won't care about your entertainment media files.

Just download a third-party file browser and launch it with your browser or do Win+R 'cmd', use `dir` and `cd` to navigate to where the file is and do `start "" file.exe`. I like NexusFile but this is not open-source so it may be haram for lainmen.
Or browse to file:/// or file:///C:/Users/ in the web browser and use the browser to view/launch things
Now that you have workarounds in place you can fix the issue with less stress at your own pace. Since you're having this issue right after something dealing with display/graphics, one possibility to have in mind is a screwed up display configuration making Windows think there are multiple displays or the display is larger than the area you can actually see (if you can move the cursor all the way off screen this is probably it).
1. Launch the file explorer
2. With the file explorer window in focus / active in the taskbar, press alt+space, then press M
3. Use the arrow keys to move the window to the visible region (most likely to the left) or you may be able to just tap an arrow key and move the mouse slightly.
You might be able to simply hold the Windows key and press the left or right arrow keys to snap the window to one side of the display, or the up arrow to maximize it (can take more than one press).
Or you could do Win+R 'regedit' and look somewhere in HKCU\Software\Microsoft (maybe HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer or something) for saved window position configuration like LastXPosition/ LastYPosition, iWindowPosX / iWindowPosY etc. Similar entries with DX and DY are dimensions of the window in pixels so these should be nonzero.
Another option is to double-click the 'show desktop' button all the way on the right end of the taskbar (all the way) to pull all windows to the current desktop.
Check in Display settings (Win key + X then press N) for an extended display / if your resolution is set to the monitor's native resolution.

If you have powerful CPU consider av1. There's that x265 based encoder which scales well across many CPU cores. Don't remember its name... svtav1 or something like that.

For those, who don't want to spend a few hours to read through this garbage, I'll boil it down to 3 sentences.
>feds developed zero day in Tails OS video player with facebook as the proxy who did the actual financing and coordination of the development
>the vulnerability is severe enough to allow remote code execution and was used to spoof real IP adress of a person. Likely with other sensitive data, but we're not told about this explicitly
>the vulnerability is not coordinated with Tails OS developed team, so most likely it's still UNFIXED
You have no security. You have no privacy. Not even Qubes. If they hacked fuarrrking player it's nothing for them to hack a VM.

I wouldn't be surprised if stories like this were fake. Like "we used some special technique to access someone's computer against their will" when really all they have to do is click click click and they can access anyone's computer.

I guess it can took some more technical skills to de-anonymize someone using Tails than just click click click. But basically, yes some clicks were used in the process I guess.

>feds developed zero day in Tails OS video player with facebook as the proxy who did the actual financing and coordination of the development
Feds didn't develop it. It was a 3rd party computer security firm and allegedly they never even gave the exploit to the feds. The FBI was involved in failed attempts to hack the guy (according to the article you linked, their hacks were even detected and mocked by the guy), and Facebook passed on information about him to the fbi, but it appears the fbi wasn't officially involved in the successful hack or development of the 0-day
>the vulnerability is not coordinated with Tails OS developed team, so most likely it's still UNFIXED
The vulnerability was already planned to be patched out before it was exploited. They didn't need to disclose it to the Tails team because they knew it wasn't going to work in upcoming versions. They still should have told the Tails team, but it's not a huge deal that they didn't and we know that it's patched now.
>You have no security. You have no privacy.
That sick fuarrrk spent 5 years harassing and extorting children for nudes, made countless murder, rape, bombing, and mass shooting threats, and he was only caught because a private company spent years trying to track him across his multiple aliases (they even developed new tools specifically for his behavior patterns, and had teams of people dedicated to tracking just him), they spent years coordinating with the fbi who failed to catch him, and then the private company finally dropped 6 figures on an exploit with a short shelf life solely to target him. An exploit that he could have avoided by following the basic opsec rule of "never open downloaded files on a machine with a network connection."
This doesn't say "no security, no privacy" to me. It says that a piece of soykaf constantly doing some of the worst soykaf possible on a platform that makes its money by logging everything and violating everybody's privacy will last 5 years and catching them will require both extensive effort on the platform's end and an opsec failure on the piece of soykaf's end.

Sure thing. Feds are the most innocent organization that ever existed. They funded it, but formally everything was done by facebook. Corporation can't just develop malware and get on with it. If it didn't get charged then it was with feds' blessing.
> fbi wasn't officially involved
Of course, you nigger, feds will not ever be officially involved in any such thing I won't even deign to explain why.
>we know that it's patched now.

>This doesn't say "no security, no privacy" to me.
Of course it doesn't cause you're glowie.
>will last 5 years
Nope.
It means that if they want to get into your computer they will just drop 6 figures to develop a zero-day specially for you. The reason why this guy lived so long is likely because no one really does give a fuarrrk about a failed nigger abusing gullible children. I'm looking for a FOSS software or plugin which will arrange multiple images into a single canvas of size (x,y), as automatically as possible.
The best I can find so far is imagemagick's montage tool with `-mode Concatenate`, but requires manual (or non-trivial custom programming) configuration of tiling and pre-processing of each image so that they all fit in the final canvas size, which isn't great for efficiently combining images of different aspect ratios (see image). I'd like a tool that handles it all automatically.

This is a dumb question but is there a Linux distro OOB that handles SMB shares via point and click in the GUI?
Here is what I want:
In Windows, I go to Network Folders, click on my NAS, put in info, and it mounts it and I can do whatever I want within my shares.
In Linux (Fedora GNOME, Debian KDE, Ubuntu GNOME) I often don't even see the share, and have to manually mount in via cifs-utils with username and password and that doesn't always work and I end up tshooting different samba versions and stuff.
Any ideas? I hate using Windows but the integration with my Synology is seamless

I think it's not about distro, but your file manager or whatever you use to find shares. I'm pretty sure I connected to samba share with thunar in a point and click manner, thought I think it uses some plugin, which can be missing by default on some distros.
Check Mint XFCE, I think it worked there.

I have a problem I think Lain can help with and I am thinking of two solutions.
I need internet in one portion of my house but every commercial mesh solution in budget is very botnet and I wonder if lains have one they like or know how I could start blocking telemetry upstream in the firewall I'm putting in.
The other idea I have is to use an old phone that uses lineage or something similar. I can put ethernet 50 meters through the house but every time you use a usb to ethernet adapter with linux and vpn or tor you get signal interrupts. This happens on different hardware and different adapters so i am thinking this is a feature instead of a bug and I don't know why the "usb0" interface is better than en0xlfd49p0 that you can't fuarrrking type in tty and have to copy paste.
I am leaning towards the mesh because I need wifi there since I have 1.5 bars on the phone but I need something more reliable.

Agent Richard Gill · 2023-09-09 20:59

DNSCrypt, as that does encryption+DNS server based authentication with minimal overhead.
DoT and DoH are utter garbage, as you're including the bloat and overhead of TLS for no good reason and you're doing CA based authentication.
The only reason why DoH exists is due to cyberhumpled networks with DPI that only allow TLS+HTTP over port 443, HTTP over port 80 and DNS over port 53 - except DNS is spied on and regularly censored and the only easy way to get a non-poisoned DNS over than sort of network is to do DNS over HTTPS.

* Mozilla Firefox integration (through Flashgot plugin).

It also can be launched from the command line. However, I am quite content with wget. It does everything I need so far. I don't have to manage tens of downloads simultaneously, so I don't care to seek for more.

The end user and purpose of implementation are considered less important than maintaining the ease-of-integration of new, less expert and less expensive programmers into any given development role. Everywhere, all the time. Especially in open source projects, including those with user-vital functionality - Linus Torvalds was considered a member of the lunatical fringe for insisting that Linux kernel update versions not break userspace and not cause massive downgrades in performance on nominally supported hardware. Lennart Poettering for example infamously disagreed with Linus' philosophy of user first, performance second, developer experience never. The fact that Linus' deprioritization of developer happiness extended to creating an actively hostile social environment was considered a feature not a bug of linux development for decades but the project seems to have walked that back, which gives some of us a bad feeling in our guts about the prioritization of user experience in the project's future. So this isn't a Windows thing by any stretch of the imagination.
If you want to see how bad this gets in the open source world rather than win10, you don't have to go any further than to check out our own Wayland thread on this very board. The Wayland advocates feel very strongly about things that affect the developer experience (X is unquestionably developer-hostile), and the anti-Wayland voices in turn are presenting themselves as examining failures of design rather than failures of implementation or failures of user-experience. There's no way that the entire discussion could in any way reflect reality. This board could not possibly contain that many DE, TWM, WM or graphical application developers. It seems more realistic that this board contains a very large number of programmers of multiple disciplines with strong ideological inclinations towards what a programmer's work and conventions ought be, and who think of that as overwhelmingly relevant.
In the interest of honesty regarding my own opinions on Wayland, I'm firmly in the Jaron Lanier school of thought on UX. Graphical fidelity is vastly less important than responsive immediacy and rapidity of updates and the way ideologically pure wayland projects like swaywm have always historically sacrificed what I consider basic quality of life factors such as cursor immediacy has entirely soured me on the project.

It shows correct cursors in a tty. If I set it as
set vi-ins-mode-string wat1\1\e[6 q\2
set vi-cmd-mode-string wat2\1\e[2 q\2 I see the prefixes change when I change modes in kitty. If i run /bin/sh in kitty again it works as expected. If I ssh into a machine with the same config
$ ssh redacted.local cat /etc/inputrc | sha256sum - /etc/inputrc

I've tried sudo grep -r '\\e' /etc but it only found /etc/inputrc and another file in /etc/profile.d/ which again is the same on both machines.
If I log as root it works fine. I assume the problematic config is in ~ . grep '\\e' ~ -r erturns 70 lines with garbage from all over, but grep '\\e\[[0-9] q' ~ -r only finds some lines in .bash_history What could be the problem?

idk try writing your own xml library? it's hell to parse text, parsing binary is theoretically much simpler. just a wild guess.

is there anything except calibre to read ebooks (fb2, epub) on linux like a normal lain? i tried bookworm but it's as bad as it gets. took me less than a minute to delete it right after installing.

It's also easier to fuzz, or otherwise play with, text-based formats, so it's easier to find the vulnerabilities in them.
For xml specifically it's because the xml standard has a number of pitfalls and dragons that most devs who are just trying to serialize some simple struct aren't aware of.

I am going to buy ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 AMD. Are there any restrictions on part repair/replacement? From what I found it wont't accept unofficial battery(?) and won't accept anything but certified card in WWAN slot, so no second SSD. But apart from that is there anything I should know about? Are there any restrictions on SSD replacement? What about screen/WiFi/etc?

If a program works on Debian, will it also work on Ubuntu? Or do you need different ISO files? I'm not a tech guy. If Netflix released an app just to work on Debian, would the app also work on Ubuntu?

Yes, Ubuntu is more or less just Debian distributed with extra software.

let me introduce you with the idea of "debian based distro" anon

linux being linux not only will it very likely work on ubuntu or mint, it will also probably work on arch and gentoo and even most likely debian. A skilled user can probably make it work on nearly any system if it works.

it's quite based actually
Zero Cool · 2023-10-11 15:57
If you mean based as in, "retarded anarcho primitivist I don't even know what I am anymore conservative with no skills in tech other than virtue signalling (such as real man CLI, real man C)", then yes, based indeed.

Don't treat others like soykaf and then complain that the quality of this hellsite is going downhill.

Is there any functional use-case, current or predicted, for GNU Hurd?
Is it just an exercise in hobbyist microkernel development, any improvements long obsoleted? Does the microkernel structure give benefits over the monolithic kernels of Linux and the most popular *BSDs?

>Does the microkernel structure give benefits over the monolithic kernels of Linux and the most popular *BSDs?
Yes, but only if you can make context switching extremely cheap like L4 does.

Not important, but are there any funny or interesting ways to fuarrrk with crawlers for your public site? robots.txt stuff, "anti"-seo, whatever.
An idea I had that might be more work than worth was to set, for example, a fake phpmyadmin page (or similar bait) that bots like to poke for possible attack vectors, and when perhaps human override takes place they're faced with some shock image.
Are there more typical things that could be done?
To be clear: This isn't a security thing, I'm just being cruel.

In the past I would refer visitors with clear bot names in the User-Agent (or referers I didn't like) to https://theannoyingsite.com/ . But it looks like it's down right now. Thankfully the source appears to be at https://github.com/feross/TheAnnoyingSite.com if you want some home-grown fuarrrkery

Is there any way to stream 1080p or higher from YouTube using yt-dlp or am I stuck having to actually download the files?
