Any thoughts on the current windows operating systems? I have some very interesting thoughts but I wanna know others' opinion first.

absolutely amazing for gaming, and video recording and editing. Otherwise, I hate them. I personally use Linux Mint 21 for daily use.
Best to just dual-boot both OSes to get the best of borth worlds, though file sharing between the two might be troublesome. Have yet to even try this myself.

Debloated W10 is fine enough considering most programs are made for the system, doubt anyone here would even think about getting 11.

I am, mainly for work-related reasons. Mainly talking about getting various certifications to climb up the corporate ladder, and knowing how to use the OS would be beneficial, I think.

I agree. For some things it's essential but as main OS, it's trash. I only use it to avoid compatibility issues.
xPinkyDash · 2023-03-27 07:54
>>68223
Exactly. You CAN use compatibility layers Wine and whatnot, but it seriously doesn't beat just running the stuff on bare-metal, neither in stability nor performance.

I still currently use Win10 a little bit just because I had used it before I started using Linux. When it goes EOL I'll take the time to back up my files and torrents and switch completely. If I can't get my games to run under wine or whatever then I guess I'll just have to live without em until I figure it out. I wish I had the money for a second GPU for GPU passthrough, I don't wanna fuarrrk around with single GPU passthrough cuz I'm worried about messing something up.
Hacker · 2023-03-27 15:30
I get using Windows for compatibility and all, but I don't know how any of you here can run that soykaf baremetal on their computer with a good conscience. It's filled with ads and spyware. even running a VM is better, at least only a fraction of my hard drive is infected with adware that way.

What do you mean by "bare metal"? Also wine is a little bit dysfunctional, none of the versions I got for macOS worked. But yeah since the 2010s Windows just is like kicking dead whales down the beach...
xPinkyDash · 2023-03-28 06:21
>>68266
>What do you mean by "bare metal"?
I mean running the OS on the hardware itself, without containerizing it using a hypervisor or the like. I know "bare metal" is a bit of a misnomer since it's technically already running on the hardware, just like everything else. But, I used it for the lack of a better term, and have seen others in the Linux community (mainly those on Discord) do the same.
Shogun · 2023-03-28 08:17
windows was always dogwater starting with dos but the further you go in time the gayer it gets. win9x was prob an improvement over 3.1 etc

Mitnick · 2023-03-28 08:42
On one hand it runs my graphic design programs (adobe stuff because normal person + have a job that requires)
on the other hand my main problem with win10 is that it treats you like a garbage consumer.
need to work? NO YOU NEED TO UPDATE
don't want all these programs preinstalled? SUCKS TO BE YOU
they go out of their way to force you on random bs just to spite you and it annoys me.
I run windows only on a VM on my alpine hypervisor. I don't give it internet access and if it messes with me I just force shut it down from the outside. I have enjoyed using windows since :)

How did you get Linux? I'm curious. I once tried to install ReactOs on a laptop I didn't use but the damm thing's BIOS was programmed to not allow the OS top be changed. How did you install it on you system?
Densel · 2023-03-30 22:14
Windows just isn't worth it anymore, Microsoft isn't a very good company, they're not only forcing users to put all of their word processing online now but they're also using their OS's monopoly on compatibility to force their company-controlled, full-of-flaws Windows OS on us.
Lady 3Jane.. · 2023-03-30 23:06
Even before the spyware became a serious concern for me, Microsoft decided it want to force a dogshit UI starting with Vista/7 and that was the final straw for me. Windows has become practically self-parody at this point of its own horrible interface decisions.
Dox · 2023-03-31 16:27

they are bloat and botnet
windows was complete around xp or whenever it got process isolation. the rest was just "value adding". literally just making giant code changes to be able to sell the same thing again and again

At least with 7/Vista you could switch the UI back to Windows Classic mode.
Since the removal of that option it has been all down hill.
Zhora · 2023-03-31 22:21

Dogshit. Awful UI, less functional than prior iterations, and spies on you at every turn, and my opinion isn't helped by the fact that M$ keeps trying to fuarrrking force 10/11 onto users who just plain and simply don't want to upgrade (downgrade, really)

There is something called LTSC IoT and Optimize Offline. You can get rid of pretty much anything you don't need. Even updates and defender can be removed. Guide made by an Anon from 4chink:

Windows is becoming harder and harder to set up and configure. Even if you don't care about your privacy, this OS and its default apps are awful and even normal users are annoyed when they use Teams, Outlook, OneDrive or Office. And I didn't even mention forced updates... If you care about your relatives, show them some GNU/Linux distributions like Linux Mint or even Ubuntu. Some of them won't want to install it and it's ok: they have to make up their own mind
Just another Random Lainon · 2023-04-10 10:43
The worst thing ever. Proof the market dominance is not created by good ideas or even competence. I can't imagine trying to show an old person how to use this mess. The way it forces microsoft curated "news" and imigary into offices all round the world is fuarrrking evil.

What? ReactOS is not Linux. I don't think they care about running on real hardware though, mostly because it's next to impossible to have a large collection of (working drivers) if you have a small team and no corporate backing.

When I need to run a new desktop app that needs Windows I use qvm-create-windows-qube. I have some automation for keeping AppVM templates for Windows apps updated that break infrequently enough that I don't mind. I'm not into games these days but if I really wanted to play some game that really needs Windows I'd buy another computer to run the game and only the game.

Hacker · 2023-07-19 08:21
>windows xp
it's missing a lot of features you might expect like tiling, searching and a compositor but it's ui is intuitive enough that a missing search features isn't too big of a deal. it's software support isn't great so i'd only recommend it for old ass pcs or if you need to run old ass software.
>vista
had a disastrous launch but came out alright after a soykafload of updates and newer, faster hardware hit the scene. pretty useless as it has much higher system requirements than xp while missing the software support, better optimization and aero snap of 7.
>windows 7
fuarrrking great but outdated and nearly obsolete. it's best suited for older systems that can't run windows 10 well or without issues. the spectre and meltdown mitigations and additional telemetry have bogged it down but you can disable that crap.
>windows 8 / 8/1
an ok stopgap between 7 and 10 but it's kinda pointless now that windows 10 is out.
>windows 10
a piece of soykaf out the box but when debloated and when using decent hardware it's pretty decent. newer builds are more bloated and remove legacy components from windows 7 but older versions (i'm talking ltsb / ltsc) have a more janky ui and have declining app support and a lack of more modern apis and other components. in general there's some annoyances like it forcing dwm on you and the mutilated control panel and incomplete uwp settings app but if configured right it's issues don't get in the way when being used.
>windows 11
it's garbage. at least until ltsc 22h2 or whatever comes out don't make the switch
geez i covered way more than just the currently supported (by microsoft) oses (10 and 11) but whatever, lmao.

Chani · 2023-07-19 19:41
It has flaws and its future is uncertain, but I use it(Windows 10 LTSC). Every time I've tried a Linux distro, I've been frustrated by at least 10 different things.
Linux also can't GUI. The GUI side of things is nothing but thrown together hobbyist projects. Even the Redhat backed components. Xorg is like kicking dead whales down the beach. Wayland is like kicking dead whales down the beach. GTK is like kicking dead whales down the beach. QT is fine I guess, but KDE is incredibly janky.
In all of my years of using Windows, it's frustrated me less than the weeks worth of time I spent on Linux. Any posix utility I've needed, WSL has me covered. The best selling point for Linux is Windows' issues.

Modern distros are bad in general. Because no one bothers to bring some actual design and consistency. So most modern GNU/Linux are terrible environments. But even so it's much better than Windows. And ironically it's actually much more intuitive, because you at least know what works the right way and what is fuarrrked up. In Windows everything is fuarrrked up and so if it breaks you can do nothing but wipe your disk.
Y.T · 2023-07-19 22:29
It is what most production software operates on and is the only operating system to make money on at Level I before being trusted or hired to better things. My thoughts on where it's going are based on observations I've made dealing with it and are economic instead of technical.
Because of an aggressive update cycle and user hostility over the past few generations there is a growing desire to move away from it and this is reflected in certain applications moving over to webapps. Payment processors are moving towards mobile os devices because chain of trust via locked down app retrieval policies are preferred by banks for their clients which is affecting the small business and enterprise market of windows, especially the Square iOS combo because it provides a predictable environment for security to be built around, financial institutions trust the proprietary locked down hardware more than the window's devices existing on a network that will never be turned off.
The three things keeping windows in place are -
>Professional Software
Intuit financial software keeps it in the hands of accountants, Autocad, proprietary point and click db software, auto tuning, etc. Every major small business and professional dependent piece of software for doing work at the journeyman level, runs exclusively on windows. Intuit is moving towards an online only model in which they liberate their customers from requiring Windows, yet their entire business; client information, bank accounts, expenses, etc., are held in a cloud they pay extortionist charges for.
Automotive software, which one would use to hack or tune a car, is also windows only over expensive and proprietary connectors.
>Office
This one deserves special mention and while I would place it next to Intuit, this is what gives Microsoft their staying power although moving over to their subscription model and not even giving it for free to users is something I think that will erode their market share in place of things like Google Docs which children seem to prefer and will prefer as adults in comparison to the Microsoft Word - which the mother and father would not pay for, since the school did not give them an easy access to the software substitutions and excuses will be made. And while accountants, lawyers, and bureaucrats favor it, this will keep Microsoft in place for the foreseeable future. Although, this is also considering moving over to a webapp based model.
>Government
The US government continues to depend, build, think, use, and contract with Microsoft because that is what they know and ignoring the dirty ends of the deals, the people inside of it can not think outside of certain paradigms beyond what they have contracted with and are apostles of these doctrines when they exit public or military service. But local government organizations such as school districts are more likely to be swayed another way because even with favorable deals, they still may have insufficient funds purposefully or not to purchase appropriate equipment for tasks on hand. Accountants and lawyers, the two biggest consumers of IT have to interface with the government, the chain keeps Windows in places as the dominant platform.
Microsoft Windows is in my opinion not forever, and a lot of different people are considering a divorce from the platform - even the reliable consumers, due to irritations in the model, and abhorrent treatment by the platform over the past few years. It won't be year of the linux desktop soon, but people want an alternative.
Things wrong, so very wrong.
>Intrusive Software Installations
Windows 11 will place advertisement shortcuts in the front of your start menu which are fake links that auto install applications from the microsoft store on your system. This is in addition to the fact that you can buy a computer, do a clean install of the operating system to remove the bloatware from the manufacturer, and Microsoft will come back and install it on their behalf without your consent.
>RAID mode
This is not much of a Microsoft decision as it is the OEMs and Motherboard Manufacturers, but by default enabling RAID as the sata operation has led to the UEFI standard being pointless. You can't swap your hard drive in and out anymore to move computers anymore, and some manufacturers even remove the option to swap back to AHCI. It is Microsoft's fault for not packaging the drivers for it as standard to deal with this issue.
>OEM mandatory bitlocker and onedrive
Full disk encryption should be a good thing, but not really, modern windows is setup on laptops to automatically enable bitlocker, force the user to make a microsoft account, and then sync that key to their microsoft live account on microsoft's website. How generous they keep you safe from those evil maids sticking their dirty feather dusters in your pc no? But at the same time they will enable onedrive without the user's informed consent to be fair it's actually coerced from them to start the computer but this links the key to the tpm on the motherboard, and if anything goes wrong like the cmos, a time skip, failed update, etc. The OS will corrupt, lock up, and be unfixable with the possibility of complete data loss, and all data held hostage by microsoft. The user will be unable to access this information if they are inept - and most are - because their email and accounts were accessible only from that computer and, if they were paying for onedrive they could assume that critical database software was protected right? NOPE! because it was written in 2005 and places the DB file in C:\LMAO so now they are very wounded over this entire incident, engineered for their security.
I would go on about other things people complain about, the ui, the spying, broken applications, but this is the worst offense by far and it's a standard practice between Microsoft and the OEMs that is user hostile and unfriendly. You can say they deserve it for running windows and being niggercattle, but there is nothing to take joy in about torturing the retarded.
There isn't anything I can say about Windows that is positive because everything it does is done better by something else, and what it does do well is because it is a monopoly position not by superior engineering or value, but through the process of first exposure.
Special Agent Bob · 2023-07-20 04:45
these threads are always stupid because the entire universe of OSs that exist is just nothing, like small variants of windows and unix. then you get some guy who buys into it and says how amiga's way of opening a new window for each folder is game changing

crap. honestly. it's performance is so terrible that it basically made me make the shift to linux. the problem is not in ui. problem is that it's a terrible piece of bloatspyware, which doesn't need to exist at all. and i can't care less than wasting my time debloating what appears to be inherently crippled. better waste my time with linux since at least i get some output from the toil.
