It's up to you if this counts as unusual hardware, dumb rich people mac users are definitely rare where i live. I tried to do the part for the aesthetic even if i don't have any crapple nostalgia.

Not unusual hardware but I bought a Framework laptop. Would be a "perfect" laptop for me if the battery life wasn't so poor.
I used to hate gnome for being bloated and terrible on a desktop, but for trackpad use it's great.
Tank · 2023-03-03 10:15
Using Tails. Not for privacy reasons even though I do like roleplaying as an elite most wanted hackerman. Rather I wanted to seperate work and school from all the random web surfing i do for fun. Tails is a pretty good live usb operating system, and all the privacy things it encourages are just a plus.

How is the framework as a workhorse machine, is it loud in regular use?
I'm very tempted by it, there are definitely some downsides with it, no s3 sleepstate and the low number of ports, but I like the design and I like the aspect ratio
Hualin · 2023-03-05 13:42
>>67578
I can only speak for linux distros with auto-cpufreq and thermald installed, but it depends on what you mean by workhorse. If you're planning to do word processing/web browsing/video playback or all three at once it's completely silent. I'm no wizard and I've only had to compile a couple packages on here so I can't speak for that sort of stuff. But the second you make the iGPU do some work, prepare for takeoff. IMO unless you need new laptop hardware save your money for now.

images in terminals are achieved with haxx, either it hooks into the x server to draw the art relative to the term window, or it encodes the image into a mess of colour and escape codes, or it uses a terminal emulator specific extension to load and render the image as an overlay. because of this there's a lack of unified standards and libraries most apps have ad hoc support or it's only implemented in a fork. troubleshooting random software on a random environment remotely on a slow board is a big ask, you're probably going to have to compile your own software and deep dive the docs and package configuration of your distribution and installation to acheive this. good luck, have fun, please look up the bug trackers of any software/pr's you test, and welcome to the bleeding edge of development.

I guess it all comes down to your experiences using it. I have never had any wayland issues whatsoever (at least on my hardware, nvidia users will probably describe a different story), especially regarding tearing which is something I constantly had to deal with X (the only solution I found was to install a compositor, say picom).

If you use Sway or Hikari, you won't have much issues. idk about Hyprland. I have used some other Wayland compositors (like LabWC and CageBreak) and they do have some weird issues (like Firefox segfaulting after accessing bookmarks menu). Also, you may want to read through the old Wayland thread >>63336
Also, just try it. Install Sway (aka the de facto standard Wayland compositor).

Tank · 2023-07-24 20:38
>>71360
>how you rice
I am one of those fellows who's had a plain black 'desktop' for years and years, but I consider my system riced in that I find it extremely comfortable but seemingly no one else can use it at all.
My method was just sitting down a couple of times and thinking about what features I wanted/needed/used and tweaking things till I got satisfied with them more or less. For a year or so I did this every few months, and changed things in significant ways, swapped wms several times. Then I changed less and less as I got a better idea of what I liked. Now I can't remember the last time I opened a config to actually change anything (desktop wise that is); I have it pretty much just how I want it and dont need to think about it at all.
Hiro Protagonist · 2023-07-25 11:51

>What is a good DE that's entirely customizable?
Xfce4 or Cinnamon. Xfce4 is more stable in my experience.
But I highly recommend using a WM. They offer you more customization options. You probably would love FVWM (or FVWM3) or Awesome WM. On FVWM, you want to use the default config as your starting point: cp /usr/share/fvwm/default-config ~/.fvwm , or you can steal someone's dotfiles.
I think Awesome WM might be a little easier to config.

if you need to learn a tiny bit of Lua for Awesome, read the relevant parts of this: https://www.lua.org/pil/contents.html (you only need to know the basics, so reading chapters 1-3 + optionally 4 is enough and you can skip stuff that you don't need to know)

Tried Wayland again. Previously, I wasn't happy with Hikari (RIP?), Cagebreak or LabWC, so I switched back to Xorg + IceWM (occasionally I also use Ratpoison).
This time I tried Wayfire. It's like Compiz but for Wayland. It supports desktop cube and wobbly windows, etc. You can disable plugins in wayfire.ini config file, if you want to get rid of these extra features. If you need a "run-dialog"/program launcher, I recommend bemenu instead of Wofi since Wofi is in life-support mode. If you need a clock, you can set PS1='\h \s\v [\A] \$ ' in your .bashrc config file. You can use https://bash-prompt-generator.org/ to generate a PS1 line for Bash. I don't use a bar, but I heard that Waybar is great option if you need a bar (personally, Alt+Tab is enough for me).
The fragmentation in Wayland landscape frustrates me, since there isn't any good OpenBox-like simple stacking Wayland compositor, yet. But there 2 OpenBox clones in the works: LabWC and Waybox, both are heavily beta quality (although LabWC is the more "mature" one of these 2). Wayfire also works pretty much like OpenBox, too. I figured that Wayfire might be more stable, since Raspberry Pi OS switched to using it by default on Raspberry Pi 4 and newer devices. Honestly, ricing Windows is not wroth it because it's a uphill battle. Unfortunately, M$ doesn't want to let you to customize Windows too much. But luckily there is GNU/Linux (and *BSD) that allows you to do whatever you want. I recommend you take a look at Awesome WM or something similar.
If you don't run Linux at the moment, you can easily create a dual-boot setup. Just download installation iso of Xubuntu. Then you need to use Windows disk management tools to shrink a partition (Linux needs 30 or 60 gigs, or more). Then you need an empty USB flash drive (with 4Gigs or more space) and Rufus. Use Rufus to "burn" the Linux iso to the flash drive and reboot your computer from the flash drive. Finally, point the Linux installer to the free space.

Firefox would sometimes segfault if you access the bookmarks toolbar (I have tried a lot of other Wayland compositors and this has never happened). But it has been a while since I tried LabWC, so I might give it another shot. I otherwise prefer it over Wayfire or any other Wayland Compositor.

I think if someone forked Element to use XMPP instead of Matrix and have proper support for video and audio calls maybe using some code from Mumble for audio quality it might become popular because it would have similar design as Discord while pleasing the people that took issue with Matrix saying it is inferior to XMPP and also drawing in Mumble users. If that is doable or is there something about XMPP that would limit video and audio quality or any other incorrect assumptions ?

That's another thing to keep in mind, you do want lower resource usage but that doesn't really go against the idea of taking design, function and pieces of code from various open source projects till you get a messaging program that can be popular enough to prevail over everything so no more having to choose between having friends or security.

mpd is easy if you are okay with using mpc and making WM keybindings that trigger various mpc commands. I recommend using a tiling WM or IceWM (a stacking WM) because they are easy to configure. Keyboard shortcuts can be also easily configured in Xfce4 (at least) but I guess you can also use sxhkd (Simple X hotkey daemon) with any WM or DE. If you don't know name of a key, you can use xev (X event viewer). You need to first set up mpd to make mpc work: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Music_Player_Daemon
All I need is:
Start or stop: WinLogo + s = mpc toggle
next track : WinLogo + n = mpc next
I can do everything else with terminal + mpc (I don't need it that often).
Otherwise, DeaDBeeF, Audacious or Quod Libet are also very nice alternatives.

Might as well spill the juice now that you revealed my super disclosed secret.
I also have a 1600*1200 in vertical mode as secondary monitor on the right and an Eizo F931 CRT, set to 1440*1050 on the left.
I used it for Vidya before since I can crank the res all the way down without it looking soykaf and of course the high refresh of up to 120hz is nice to have.
It's quite burned out unfortunately and 22" 4:3 doesn't make for the best gayming experience.
So since getting a "new" GPU I moved on to the big 1440p monitor although it's far from perfect with the soykafty black values and high latency of 5ms.
Maybe I can revive the tube of my Eizo somehow and get some more use out of the CRT. It's still the superior display technology. fuarrrk flatscreen poz.

i would love to get a high res ips LCD for productivity, but i can't afford it. ofc it would go in vertical for some nice coding sessions.
I recently was able to get a CRT in perfect condition for 2U$D, the guy that sold it to me got it from an university, and it even had the cable protective bag thingy still in place. geometry looks perfect without any config, but the only problem is that it doesn't have the nicest colors. still, it may be one of the best preserved CRTs in my country, since here people doesn't care about old but extremely reliable tech. I use the CRT for playing quake 3 with friends... i run it at 1024x768 @ 85hz, but supposedly it can reach up to 1600*1200 @ 100hz with the right config, but i still haven't managed to get it working through xrandr

Nice find, anon.
>haven't managed to get it working through xrandr
I personally use a config file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d where I put in all the custom modelines.
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Multiple_monitors
I use this tool to calculate the modelines. Just make sure it doesn't exceed your maximum vertical refresh.
https://arachnoid.com/modelines/
If you can't reach 1600*1200 at that refresh, try a lower resolution at higher refresh. Cheap adapters can't do very high resolutions.
I'm not using my CRTs monitors much anymore. For a while I was picking them up all the time from eBay.
But for 90s console gayming I'm using a CRT TV nowadays and for PC gaming it's just hard adjusting to those 20" 4:3 when you've been using a widescreen monitor for a certain amount of time.
But it's still nice seeing how smooth everything looks every now and then.
Good luck anon.

Why spotify if you have soulseek?
Regardless of the reason, maybe you should try this instead: https://nuclearplayer.com

This is like saying you should use hacked Windows instead of Linux because you know how to set it up, or Bitcoin with privacy extra-steps instead of Monero, what a dumb logic.

My guess is that it's for music discovery. There's also (in my experience very buggy spotify client) https://github.com/KRTirtho/spotube, and some other (probably more reliable) ones: https://github.com/Rigellute/spotify-tui

Desktop 1: Windows XP SP3 - Does not connect to internet.

Hey, this is awesome. I'm also now using TDE; I posted my xfce devuan desktop a bit earlier in this thread. GTK stuff just isn't for me anymore after trying this.
Some people argue against the existence of Trinity because it might seem redundant. When you compare it with modern KDE, it's obvious which one is the more pleasant choice.
Erik Johansson · 2024-11-18 13:29
>>81666
Honestly, there's just nothing like it nowadays. Every other desktop environment is trying to go for some modern look and you can't rely on GTK for so long given that developers are making it worse over time with the soykaf they keep adding to it. I love how TDE will always feel and look like a system from the early 2000s and that there are people who care about keeping it alive. Long live KDE3.

Haruna · 2024-11-19 06:18

The "modern look" they're trying to achieve is a direct copy of macOS in many aspects, down to the actual features of that system; I find it hard to believe that that's the peak of UI design and that we can't do better or at least more unique. Maybe some people do like that flat/semi-transparent stuff, but to me, it is so flat and uninspired because it's trying to appeal to a huge crowd/the lowest common denominator. You can't really "go wrong", as some say windows xp did, when the design is just solid black or solid white rectangles.
TDE feels comfortable to me exactly because it's not constantly changing to adapt to whatever apple is pushing or what's considered "modern".

It's a good distro if you know what you're doing. It's well maintained for a small distro and has a good selection of packages. I'm talking about quality, not quantity. It's not as big as AUR of course. If something you need is not in the repo, xbps-src helps with installation from source.
Void is stable. But if you have any issues, people on #voidlinux at libera.chat are friendly and usually are willing to help.
Mentat · 2024-12-18 14:21

>It's well maintained
It's not.
>has a good selection of packages
That hasn't been a valid argument since 1999.
>xbps-src helps with installation from source
Just like any other package manager out there. And for that matter, in the long run even dpkg is less PITA than xbps-source.
>are friendly and usually are willing to help
To invent a workaround for issues that didn't need to exist in the first place.

winxp is surprisingly daily driver material (even though i was using it ten years ago). still more of a toy compared to unix but you can find great win32 programs to do all kinds of things. i wanna see how easy it is to write stuff in freebasic but am in the middle of a project already

I'm running Void for 3 years on most of my machines and never had any problems with it. Will I distrohop? Maybe. Not because Void is bad, or because it will die soon, but because there are other interesting distros I would like to try.
How is Hyperbola nowadays by the way? Is it your main OS? Why would you recommend it instead of Void?
