UMPC

Do you have any experience with UMPCs? I'm thinking of getting myself such for carrying on me the whole time to take notes and taking notes while reading book in bed. And for SSH from time to time. How small can it get so that id doesn't become hard to type? How large is too large to carry comfortably around. Literally in pocket would be best. 8.4 inch like OneMix 3s seems most promising.

I have one EEE 701, I use it as a terminal only. I strongly recommend buying a machine like this if available and cheap. Face it as a typewriter that has networking. Get one that is small (<9") enough to carry without a it being problematic. GUI/X11 is too much clutter for these small devices. If your workflow is not 100% text, or you make it text only, or I can't see this device being a thing for you. Using the device like this is the zen way of programming. Is therapeutic and something that I enjoy deeply. >>67409 >8.4 inch like OneMix 3s seems most promising. I would recommend against spending too much money on a machine like this. Is way cheaper to buy a Linux phone and use a bluetooth keyboard.

>>67409 seconding what >>67445 anon said about not spending too much on these. ive owned several umpc (gpd umpcs). the quality is just not there, they cram a lot of stuff into these machines with cheap parts and things break constantly. believe me, i love the idea of umpc and am waiting for the day an actual decent one comes out, but everything on the market now is crap and likely will continue to be crap (the entire pc market is crap these days anyways, present day thinkpads are one soldered piece of crap that break in a years time instead of 10+ years). just buy an old phone with a sliding keyboard, flash postmarket os on it, open a terminal, start coding, browing the web, etc. the experience will be better that way

>>67409 >I'm thinking of getting myself such for carrying on me the whole time to take notes and taking notes while reading book in bed. And for SSH from time to time. You can literally do all of that with a phone. >>67445 Before you see a cheap one and click buy now. The small eeePCs are 32bit atom CPUs and can only be upgraded to 2GB of RAM. The newer eeePCs are too chonky to be considered pocket sized. >Is way cheaper to buy a Linux phone and use a bluetooth keyboard. Depends what you want to do. If you're looking for trouble then google+bluetooth is a double opsec fail. >>68794 >the quality is just not there, they cram a lot of stuff into these machines with cheap parts and things break constantly I have a GPD, it's a nice aluminum shell and everything works. It has a real intel processor with full virtualization extensions and 8GB of RAM and it fits in a jacket pocket. My only complaint is that the internal wifi and usb ports are underpowered so if you want to do wifi stuff you won't get the same wireless range as a full sized laptop.

>>68814 >The small eeePCs are 32bit atom CPUs i'm pretty much sure there must be at least one small eeePC with the atom n450, which is a 64 bit cpu that performs pretty well for a lot of tasks under a lightweight distro (i know this because i've had a netbook with this cpu since 2016 and it's great with ubuntu server or void + a wm)

>>68814 >You can literally do all of that with a phone. I've tried to do that both on screen keyboard and with bluetooth keyboard. It's doable but often positioning the keyboard and phone in a comfortable manner is very hard. UMPC has keyboard and screen integrated in a normal hard way which is way more useful
Lord Nikon · 2023-04-24 16:33
>>67409 After a lot of fiddling around, I concluded that I need a tablet with a keyboard for my needs such as comfyposting, reading stuff etc. Even though carrying it outside is a bit harder than real UMPCs, I don't think you would like to read or post on those little screens, if so you can just use your phone outside like I do. At worst it can fit in a backpack with all the books and stuff I throw in so if I really need it, I can still take it with me. Just choose somewhere around 8" and you're good to go.

>>68858 Not sure, it's not listed on wikipedia. The first 64bit CPU is N330 but the screen is 12" nigger just buy a thinkpad x250. I guess you're talking about this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/285023189640 >Asus Eee PC 1015PE 101." Intel Atom N450 >10.1" 1024 x 600 Display >10.1" That's my point blud >The newer eeePCs are too chonky to be considered pocket sized I've got a 7" 701 and it barely squeezes into the front pouch of my hoodie (mostly because of thickness). To carry something 10" you need a bag at which point you might as well get something with a full sized keyboard and a real CPU. >>68863 >UMPC has keyboard and screen integrated in a normal hard way which is way more useful Be careful of the layout though, there are only enough buttons for a standard US keyboard. And there's some annoying soykaf like 'A' is where caps lock should be and there's only a shift button on the left. If an on screen keyboard is too slow for you a UMPC might not be a big step up as you think.

Definitely an expensive toy. I use mine to write small example programs about whatever I am learning or interested in, mostly Scheme these days. Very useful, and made me stick to an offline-first approach that actually is helping me focus on what I really want to do vs wasting (too much) time on the internet.

Not sure how these are better than a tablet with a keyboard case.
Lunch · 2023-05-29 17:11
>>69490 They are more portable, that's a fact. But the problem is as soon as you go for pocketable portables the keyboard shrinks with it as well, which makes typing more difficult. I think something like HTC dream form factor linux phone would solve most of the problems. Because you can't really put these to desk and expect a great typing experience, pocket computers should be made for thumb typing. Rest of the people can use a tablet with a keyboard or a regular laptop.

>>67409 I just use a phone for everything a UMPC did for me. Now I just want a 10 inch laptop with HDMI connector.
