Better email domains

Ishikura "Tatsu" Tatsuhiko · 2023-02-19 15:48
What email domains does Lain use? I don't want to use Hotmail and GMail. I know about Protonmail, but I don't like that I can't use an email client and am forced to use their soykafty web interface. And I have no idea where else to look for this kind of thing.
Dujour · 2023-02-19 16:11
cock.li for unimportant things. For day to day stuff I use mailo. Nothing particularly interesting but they offer different sync protocols for email, web storage, contacts, etc.
Eldon Tyrell · 2023-02-19 21:08
Posteo is alright https://posteo.de/

I hate the big providers but small ones it's this looming concern they will shut down without me being aware and losing my email from it or my access to websites if i forgot my password. No i will not use a password manager. So I was considering running a self hosted email but Im not sure that's a good idea with unreliable internet connection.

https://digdeeper.neocities.org/articles/email This page features a lot of privacy oriented reviews for tons of providers, you might find what you want there.
Yet Another Lainon · 2023-02-20 10:19
https://mailbox.org/en/ You can use their servers with your own domain and they also provide Jitsi and XMPP and some other stuff with the account.

>>67373 I use Migadu. You need to bring your own domain, but it's cheap and the support is very friendly and forthcoming. Keep in mind you're paying for bandwidth with Migadu, not for aliases/identities - those are unlimited. To me, it's ideally the next best thing after self hosting your email. Previously I was using posteo, which is really good as well, but they don't allow you to bring your own domain, which is why I left. >>67374 I never trusted cock.li, they seem fuarrrked and their uptime seems to be quite horrible, although that's not that big of a problem. To me, it's only viable as a temporary email provider for throwaway accounts and the like. >>67377 >looming concern they will shut down Become independent of the email provider and use your own domain. If the provider shuts down you simply move to another one and receive your email as usual. Losing email is another thing. This shouldn't happen, and if you don't back up your email (and everything else) it's your fault and yours alone if you lose them. Make backups; IMAP makes this easy. If you need a recommendation, use restic or tarsnap. >No i will not use a password manager Why is that? >unreliable internet connection Sounds like you're thinking about hosting your email at home - that's a sure way to not have your email delivered at all. If you want to set up your own email make sure to host it in a datacenter; you could rent a VPS for that, for example. >>67388 >https://digdeeper.neocities.org/articles/email >>It's paid - that alone does not kill it, but free should be prefered If it was free they'd need to make their money through other means... like ads, or tracking you. Having a paid service is a sustainable business model. If you care enough about privacy, you should be willing to pay $1.58/month for email. >>You must contact them personally if you want to pay with Bitcoin, but at least they do support the option What does Bitcoin have to do with anything privacy related? It's a privacy nightmare. By design every transaction of yours is public. To add to that, the amount of resources wasted to use Bitcoin is insane, but I won't get into that here. The website points out IMAP/SMTP as sort of a "nice to have", which is hostile towards standardized email in general. They're standardized protocols for email, if a service doesn't provide these protocols then they're destroying the email space just as bad as big tech did. Personally, I think you should stay away from that site beyond the list of email providers it provides. Additionally, if you're willing to go as far as anonymizing your email to the point of using cryptocurrencies and what not you should be hosting email yourself. Email is stored in plain text unless it's encrypted by both parties willing to use the flawed technology that is GPG. The only way you can ensure that you are anonymized and in conrol of your email is self hosting. >>67389 mailbox.org seems nice, but I tried using them and only ran into problems. Support was not willing to help, either, so I quickly left them again. Additionally, I absolutely hated their web interface, it was really ugly; but that's down to personal preference.

https://purelymail.com/pricing >$10 a year >There are no hard limits. Not on users, custom domains, storage, or anything else. >If you use significantly more than $10 a year in resources, you may need to switch to advanced pricing. You can use the pricing calculator on the advanced pricing page to estimate your use, but most users will not run into soft limits. Pricing calculator (you set only the first variable, here "8.19 GB" which brings the annual price to $10 to show where usage would start to exceed that cost): >I want to store 8.19 GB of uncompressed mail (about 3.08 GB compressed) per year. I will receive 27,300 emails totaling 0.55 GB, send 1,638 email to other people totalling 0.16 GB, and have a custom domain email address. >This will cost: $10.00 per year >Or: $1.72 for storage, $4.00 in account fees, $0.92 for received email, $0.02 for received email bandwidth (GB), $3.33 for sent emails, $0.00 for sent email bandwidth (GB), and $0.00 in username fees.

I use disroot currently because I (very sadly) lost my riseup account. Had that thing for years, lost the keepassx db the password was stored in.

>>67373 I saw mahjong.email was for sale and I took it immediately. I'm not sure how it wasn't parked or that a single-word domain didn't have premium pricing, and I only really bought it because I started playing mahjong with my friends. I have no idea if I should turn it to a proper email service. I doled it out to a few of my friends who was interested but there's zero account automation (they'd have to email me to set the password for them, either in plaintext usually or they can give a bcrypt hash), not to mention Outlook broad-brush blocked the entire IP block my VPS lives in. Is this domain at all interesting to lainons? Maybe I can turn it into something more?
Agent Jones · 2023-02-22 00:19
I use gmail with my custom domain hooked up to thunderbird with PGP. I also use my gmail to send password reset requests for my website. I also have a Protonmail and Tutanota account, but last I checked they didn't support all these things without paying more money.
Hagbard Celine · 2023-02-26 00:41
>>67421 mahjong.email is too good of a domain to let go to waste. If I had a domain name like that, I'd definitely use the email addresses as a marker for a secret club or something.
Ender · 2023-02-26 01:16
>>67373 I don't use email whatsoever. I haven't for nearly an entire year. It's a struggle just doing basic things, but I can't deal with the stress and anxiety of waiting for, reading, and replying to emails. Just not me no thanks.

>>67389 I am using Mailbox.org. it's pretty based. but you have to pay 1-2 € / $ for using your own domains. Also they are not independent inboxes, but Aliases. You have to llok out how you do that in your mailprogram
Hong, Guil Dong · 2023-03-07 16:47
I also use mailbox.org. Always use your own domain, that way you can bring your email with you if you are let down by your service and need to switch. I helped my friend set this up with fastmail, and I was so impressed with fastmail that it almost made me switch. I chose mailbox because I didn't want my email company privvy to Austrailian law.

>>67373 Riseup is the best one I think. Unlimited aliases, no bullshit. The downside is that they likely are a fed honeypot now, but what isn't?
Nguoi La · 2023-03-27 16:46
Many years ago hello kitty online offered a free @hellokitty.com mail and according to people on the internet they re-opened the servers for existing accounts to access their mail, but the registration site is still broken. If anyone finds a way to make it work, feel free to share. I believe they simply disabled it with that generic error message. The landing page is certainly new, so someone is working on it. https://member-sg.sanriotown.com/index/adduser

Fastmail for important and day-to-day email. Apple hidemymail or Proton for throwaway. I used Mailbox.org for a few years but the performance of their CalDAV offering was dogshit. Fastmail is better in every way. It costs a little bit, but like most things email is a dilemma of fast, reliable, and cheap - choose two.
Frank Garza · 2023-03-29 12:53
>>68265 I love the idea of signing up for an email on a unique open registration domain like that. I use migadu for personal emails and the like, but I'm often reluctant to throw out anything but my cock.li online because spam on migadu has the potential to cost me money. If anyone has any weird domains like hellokitty.com that have open registration, I'd love to hear about them.

>>67421 I'm sure people would be interested. Potential for a shared lainon email service? I could contribute some money to make it free for lainons, maybe other people might as well.

I use Disroot. It's breddy gud, sends emails, receives emails, has a calendar I can sync to my phone. I got some nice stickers for donating to them. >>68271 There's a registration page linked from the homepage. Your registration has to be manually approved which may take a couple days. https://user.disroot.org/pwm/public/newuser

Tank · 2023-07-14 19:04
>>67738 >they likely are a fed honeypot now That's FUD. They complied with one FBI request for info on two accounts that were running a ransomware. No serious activist collective would pull the plug on their organization just to let some scumbags get away with crimes they themselves don't tolerate. Besides, an additional encryption layer has since been added to their email service. It's not E2E, but it does give them an excuse to comply less with government requests in the future. But then again, Riseup invites have been disabled, so now's not the right moment to be looking for one.

>>71109 me too :) it's pretty solid. it supports pop3 and imap. (gmail and outlook don't support the latter due to their desire to gain and retain your data) it also has a lot of other services included with a disroot account like cloud storage.

I use protonmail. It annoys me but i cant find a better alternative for custom domains that allows paying with soykafcoin
Lady 3Jane.. · 2023-08-12 11:02
>>67373 >Protonmail, but I don't like that I can't use an email client and am forced to use their soykafty web interface not the OP, but just wanted to say fuarrrk protonmail. they are a false promise. they will hold your email hostage and will not let you use a 3rd party client unless you pay their rent seeking bullshit, and constantly waste your time unless you pay. AND if you do pay (which kills your privacy), the fuarrrking bridge will make so many fuarrrking API calls taht your cpu will be dead. I resorted to a 3rd party app called hydrox that replicates the bridge, and it fuarrrking works like complete ass. Also, your inbox will fill up extremely quickly, and they lock all of the filtering tools (which work like ass anyway) behind their paywall, so you cant even filter to get rid of junk and save inbox space. If you run out of space, you can try exporting emails but then what the fuarrrk my email is no longer searchable in one place, Protonmail has designed the service to fuarrrk you over at every turn, and has made it impossible to manage your email, and even if you pay the experience is still soykaftier than google, AND on top of all that email is not an encrypted protocol anyways and nobody uses a PGP key so the second your email leaves proton your privacy is fuarrrked. tldr Google will read 100% of your emails. Protonmail will prevent you from reading 100% of your emails, beg for money, waste your time, and provide you privacy theater. what the actual fuarrrk Anons, I cannot stress this enough, think hard and think twice before using protonmail, because it fuarrrking is like kicking dead whales down the beach

>>71885 I don't know if this is a solution or not, but Cotse is always worth a look https://cotse.net/services-email.html Crypto? No; money order or cash in mail? Yes: https://cotse.net/subscribe.html Cash in mail? Can't they just, like, keep it and tell you to go fuarrrk yourself? I mean, sure, but they don't. Proof: just take my word for it lol. Or look up reviews, idk. I sent them a $20 in the mail like 15 years ago and they set me up promptly (just like SDF did when I bought ARPA membership). They haven't stayed in business since then by turning their long-established service (check whois) into a rug-pull. - They are US-based and won't cover your ass while you use their network to do stupid soykaf - Within that, their mission is privacy. They disclose what they do and don't have logged and why: https://cotse.net/logging.html The entire policies section is worth a read and the old version of the website will have more info to look through: https://web.archive.org/web/20220313002509/https://www.cotse.net/resources.html Page detailing how they respond to various types of inquiries from government entities: https://web.archive.org/web/20230331002627/https://www.cotse.net/legal-process.html (missing from new site) Notices page with monthly canary etc.: https://web.archive.org/web/20230331005008/http://www.cotse.net/notices.html (no canary on new version) The differences on the new version of the site are possibly concerning, but for anyone who wants to probe into it, I'm sure helpdesk@cotse.net will be glad to answer any questions. Steve is an old hand with more than his share of Usenet brewing soykaf and flamewarring under his belt; he won't really be put off by whatever brand of autism characterizes your inquiry. Also quick plug for my current host for those who aren't particularly concerned about things like being hosted on AWS or paying via major third-party gateways: https://purelymail.com/pricing (besides, isn't it totally cyberpunk to blend in with the data flow of a massive faceless conglomerate or something?)
