Help me !

I need a text editor which is available in the major linux distros and is similar to VSCode. I'm not comfortable with vim or emacs and want something which has a file navigation panel on the left if possible. I tried Gnome Builder and I did not like it.
Haruyoshi · 2023-01-27 23:48
>I am not comfortable with vim or emacs
there's a solution to this: become comfortable with vim or emacs. Emacs can have file management soykaf open on the left. fuarrrk it even vim can. I hate to say it but if you can't learn either of those you are a nigger and you should get out of programming so everyone else can be more productive.
check out tmux by the way its also handy you don't need to thank me

I've used both vim and emacs for like 2 years
i hate them
I hate niggers who think using archaic text editors is a mark of a good programmer

Pulsar is a community run fork of Atom since Atom shut down. I haven't tried it so I can't vouch for it, but as long as it's similar to Atom and it's FOSS and it's maintained by a community, then it seems pretty good.
They have the package manager system working too.

There's always vscodium if you're set on using vs code. It's available on all major distros I've used.

Wasn't there something bad with VSCodium regarding privacy? Or am I misremembering something else?

i think you can't loss credibility any faster than that, lmao
i miss when this site wasn't full of soykafheads like you with not even the slightest idea of how to behave

lite-xl ? i've seen people compare it to vs code, you can write plugins in lua

https://github.com/VSCodium/vscodium/blob/master/DOCS.md#disable-telemetry
Other options:
- Lite-XL (https://lite-xl.com/): Fast but basic, needs plugins for most functionality, no built-in plugin manager but there is one in development
- CudaText (https://cudatext.github.io/): Sublime text clone
- Textadept (https://orbitalquark.github.io/textadept/): Old-school but fast and lightweight
- Geany (https://www.geany.org/): Old-school lightweight IDE
- Lapce (https://lapce.dev/): Pre-alpha but promising
- ecode (https://github.com/SpartanJ/ecode): Pre-pre-alpha

buddy, I've been here for a long time. Come and go but keep comming back. I used to be a happy do-it-how-you-want-it-everything-that-works-is-valid type of guy but at some point youve got to recognize certain patterns, and the type of guy who doesn't get comfortable with something like vim or emacs and craves some jacked up gui garbage is not the sort of person who should be programming.
Why can't he find another hobby ? Stamp collecting ? Numismatics ? Perhaps Embroidery ? Evidently computers arent for him. Using something like vim may not be the mark of a great programmer, but trying to use vim/emacs for two years, remaining uncomfortable, and then quitting to go to vs code or whatever the fuarrrk is closest sure sounds like a mark of a bad one.

If you don't like NeoVim or GNU Emacs and you don't want to use VS{Code,Codium}, I recommend Kate or Geany. If you want a full IDE, check out Eclipse and NetBeans (it had some security issues in the past but they are probably fixed by now). There is also QT Creator but I don't personally like it very much (it's mainly useful for the GUI designer).

seconding Kate and Geany, they were quite nice until I got used to vim.

Take a look at a pre-modified Emacs like Doom Emacs.
It has most of the capabilities of a proper IDE with all he sleekness of emacs.
I tried a few "modern" IDEs, and they all felt like fuarking garbage.

Hopping tools won't fix the fact that you don't know how they work. Both vim and emacs have this feature.
Get a tool that you can control to have what you want out of it instead of hopping to a new one. This will save a lot of time down the road.

If this behavior is only on the scope of text editors, is less bad. But usually this spreads across everything.
Can't change the window manager? Get another distro, brag like a fuarrrked up weirdo why this is the best distro ever, on the next simplest problem put it aside and repeat the process instead of learning how to fix it.
Can't finish an app? Can't code? Hop languages, frameworks and tech stacks until you need to change your job because people are suspecting that your previous miracle solution that was better than the previous miracle, which was better than the previous previous miracle, is not that good. So these people need to hop jobs leaving the mess behind.
This is the type of person that reads crap on medium and think that people who don't know the soykaf they are talking about, are giving them a silver bullet for all their problems.
Is like an algorithm, the source is the ego. Someone can't assume that they are not good enough, so it MUST be something else. If they can't code, is because they don't have a mac, if they have a mac, is because they don't use the best mechanical keyboard, if they have the $300 keyboard, they complain that is because they don't have 3 screens... and so on and on...
Is never
> I can't use it, I'm stupid, but I will do my best to learn.
2 hours of vimtutor a week you become proficient in less than 6 months. But learning don't give these people free dopamine.

VScodium?
in any case, i don't see a reason to open a new thread for something that doesn't requires any discussion at all

I have to agree. Most people who are incapable of performing at a basic level with a bare minimum toolset, are also incapable of holding themselves accountable for their unstable foundations knowledge-wise.

I liked having atom but these things (obviously) come and go. Things like emacs and vim have been around a long time for a reason, and will stick around for a long time yet.
This is not really answering your question, I just wanted to encourage you to reconsider them, without trash-talking people
Junichi Fujiwara · 2023-03-20 20:27
I don't get why people always want to force non-gui text editors on people who want gui based text editors. Cursors are legitimately useful. Offloading tasks from your brain to a UI is legitimately useful. Being trained passively like you're playing a modern videogame is legitimately useful. I like open source, I hate Microsoft, but vscode is a very solid tool and lightens the cognitive burden needed to accomplish things, a worthwhile principle for a piece of software to strive for. There's nothing wrong with wanting that out of your tools.

please give vim another go. i had your same experience, but then i started using neovim, adding plugins, and after a while i could not live without it. hell, there are even gui frontends for it if you really hate the terminal. give it another shot
