what is your tech new years resolution?
i want to get into programming with crystal and so when i get out of high school i can make an app that way i dont have to work long hours at a hair salon
by bro has a linux server farm and i have been using that instead of the cloud to avoid them stealing my ideas
i took extra math, got into calculus and statistics so i could be a better than average programmer in case there is competition
what about you?
Crazy Jake · 2023-01-01 14:56
I'm learning higher level concepts in functional programming like comonads, transformer stacks, and transducers, FRP, etc.

Be better at using Gentoo and NetBSD to focus more on real job instead of tinkering

Advancing my base knowledge in Linux so I don't need the internet if something goes wrong. I'm way too dependent on searching up problems rather than down right learning the issues thoroughly. I also plan on having an offline machine to maintain to get used to the idea of possibly not having internet any longer due to potential problems in the foreseeable future. Kind of as >>66338 mentioned here. Other than that I have ideas to become better with writing code and attempting to get a tech job only if my privacy doesn't pose a issue. Otherwise, I'm not interested in that.

Learn to read man and info pages. Pick a shell language and learn it (zsh or fish, bash is crap).

I want to get a job. I'm kinda done with university.
Other than that:
- I want to actually write an OS that is good enough to run Doom. I have started this kind of project two times before but they both fell a bit short for reasons.
- I want to actually publish some useful software. Writing an OS is cool but not very useful, I want to make something that people will actually be glad to use
I could very well end these resolutions in 2 weeks or the whole year

Anon, he already has a job
Lady 3Jane.. · 2023-01-02 13:58
make apps for the hair salon op, lots of pink collar jobs with not tech savvy people that could use something
as for me:
practice pentesting and partake in ctf challenges more
make homebrew games or at the very least romhacks that aren't "x game but the sprites are different"
be a less lazy sysadmin
goals that only align to my autism and won't change my life but at least i will be happy, hope everyone else can achieve their goals too

I've resolved to learn motoko, a programming language for the internet computer/dfinity blockchain.
I missed the boat with solidity/ethereum and I have a few friends that made bank making soykafty dapps for psuedoscammers. Motoko is nice, based off rust and the blockchain is still young and in early development. Seems like it could be lucrative over the next 5 years.

The most important:
1) Move my Windows desktop over to Linux.
2) Finish migrating off hotmail.
Completing those two will sever my final ties to big tech. That would mean no Microsoft, no Google, no Apple, no Facebook, no other social media of any kind.
Personal development:
1) Set up a website.
2) Finish reading and going through the exercises of K&R.
Home stuff:
1) Set my home network back up. Moved house and have just had the ISP-provided box. Used to have a proper router, APs, pihole etc.
2) Set up a Jellyfin server for home media.
3) Stop paying for NewsBlur and set up an RSS server.
That doesn't seem like a lot to some of you but I think it'll be plenty to do for the year.

My new years resolution is to get over my hatred of programming long enough to finish this python module and get on with the actually interesting statistics and maths parts of my degree.
I was actually enjoying doing a degree part time until I had to start doing this stuff, I don't know how programmers do it, I open IDLE and my brain switches off, I can do database and logistics stuff all day, set up a system to manage 5000 people's soykaf over last week, spent a solid 4 hours earlier figuring out I needed to use index to multiply specific contents of one list by specific contents of another list
This is not a joke, I spent 4 hours trying to write a program that came out to 22 lines including comments.
Getting my website up and running is the other thing, pages are all written but haven't done the hosting or domain registration bit yet.

It sounds stupid, but "not buy anything new". I get suckered a lot into new shiny toys, but already have what I need.

My tech new years resolution is to finally get over my fear/lack of drive to learn programming and linux completely.
i use linux and know a bit of zsh and bash but i know that i have no clue of what im doing and i look up 100% of my issues with linux. I feel like if i learn bash I'll have better chances of learning a language and actually retaining it and using it.
Hiro Protagonist · 2023-02-08 14:03
I want to build my own linux system. I am sick of every single distro being broken in some way from the moment I install it. I want my system to reflect exactly my values, be optimized for my hardware and my usage, and to know what's in there and why it's needed and not just to have a rigmarole of unknown software and libraries sitting in the background.
Then I want to sanitize my internet usage, to use the internet more productively and efficiently, and avoid javascript bloat (just a little may be fine), and stop using harmful services.

Once you get used to it, going back to 1080 feels like you've returned to 640x480. I know this board has a hard on for that era, but its another thing entirely to be stuck living it.

For OP, it's great that you are not shying away from math. When you get the opportunity I'd also recommend you jump into linear algebra. It will help you in more specialized things like graphics, machine learning, scientific computing, etc.

Yeah, Gentoo was not what I was thinking about. But I took your advice anyway, I adjusted my goals and I also remember that Gentoo wasn't half bad. So I installed and I'm happy so far.
Thank you lain.

A lot that goes into "making an app" is marketing. The technical part is only a small and mostly irrelevant part of making a business targeting consumers.
