It should explain itself if you read the README, but I'll explain it anyway. Commands and links will be shown with square brackets to keep this tidy. Extract the tarball [1]. Run the config script [2]. Make sure you're in the newly extracted directory. Run make if it worked [3]. If not, google the error and install the correct dependencies. Some requirements are given here [4]. Run make install as root. [5] Change your ~/.xinitrc file (you are using xinit to start X, aren't you?) by adding this line to the end (and removing any similar line which starts your current window manager) [6]. You can customise the menu and styles here [7] and here [8] respectively. Restart X [9] [10]. I hope this helped. If you're using a distro with a wm or de out of the box, don't do this. This is targeted towards distros where you've set up your wm manually (in fact, it seems to be made for BSD). If you do want to use this on a big distro 1) things will very likely break and 2) you'll have to do a lot more to get it to properly integrate with everything e.g. desktop manager. [1] tar -xf LainWM\ 1.4\ Alpha\ Source.tar.bz2 [2] ./configure [3] make [4] https://lainos.org/resource.html [5] sudo make install [6] exec /usr/local/bin/lainwm [7] /usr/local/share/lainwm/menu [8] /usr/local/share/lainwm/styles [9] sudo pkill X [10] startx

Cool that it is seemingly being revived. What's it look like?
