E-Ink Linux readers/ PineNote
Hiro Protagonist · 2022-12-10 07:55
I feel like I really missed my chance to get an open, distraction free paper replacement when the PineNote sold out.
Does anyone know if there is a second batch to be expected anytime soon? Otherwise I am very hard pressed to find any alternatives.
Do you know of similar E Paper devices, running Linux?
That is my main requirement, a pen would be a nice thing to have, but I can do without.
Basically I really like the idea of being able to directly sync my whole calibre library and notes directly on there and being able to access it without all the distractions that my computer would have and also not burning my eyes out looking at a bright screen for hours on end - I don't know how much of a hazard for eyesight LCDs really are. But through its sluggishness E-Ink automatically reduces the urge for distraction.

"The early adopter's batch of the PineNote is aimed solely at early adopters - more specifically, the units are solely intended to find their way into the hands of users with extensive Linux experience. If you’re looking to buy a PineNote in the first batch, you must expect to write software for it, not to write notes on it. The software shipping from the factory for the first batch will not be suitable for taking notes, reading e-books, or writing your dissertation. It may not even boot to a graphical environment."
more will be probably be sold when the software is ready

The reMarkable2 is pretty open Linux e-paper tablet with an active modding community, think it's even ~$100 cheaper than the PineNote.
I'm undecided onto whether I actually like mine or not, on one hand it is probably the best device for the job out right now on the other hand it feels damn janky even without 3rd party software.

Buy a Kobo and install koreader. reMarkable2 is expensive, has no backlight (extremely useful during the evening) and some kike-ish subscription model thing.

It's not even a production batch. Effectively the early access version of hardware for people intending to do software development for it.
Chill.

Technically Amazon Kindle devices run Linux, but it is normally hidden from plain sight. If you can manage to find a model with older firmware, you can get root access on it for customization. That is probably the cheapest solution.
Be aware that when you plug it to a PC it can be accessed as a mass storage device and you never even have to connect it to the internet to use it, so if you only care about reading on it, you don't even need root.

I already have a pocketbook which technically also runs linux, but it's all closed down and I can only run software customized for the firmware.
I basically want a tablet computer with E-Ink

What document viewer does the reMarkable use? Does it have the ability to make annotations in Epub and PDF files directly or does it have its own proprietary format?
Of course it would be best if I could just run calibre directly and sync my stuff over.

It's not at all what I'm looking for. It doesn't even run a web browser

Do you have any resources on enabling this on an older Kindle Paper thingy? I wanna read manga on it, but my computer never really detects my kindle, I've been using calibre to put files onto it but it's a pain in the ass to be honest. I want to see if I can put an actual browser in it, and have the ability to read manga of course.

The older paperwhites will probably struggle with viewing some manga.Screen size and the contrast and shading your manga may use. Check out KUAL launcher and go from there for general paperwhite soykaf. That should get you started. I just use it play chess and read felonious amounts of pirated books and manuals. Strictly on airplane mode. fuarrrking Amazon. Kicking ass. One of the best Christmas gifts my grandma has ever gotten me.

Kobos run Linux, but they aren’t open source. There are projects to write open source firmware replacements: pmOS was ported to two models iirc, there was another one called Inkbox but the site for it is inaccessible.
Koreader is a pretty solid replacement replacement for Nickel but it isn’t a full replacement for the firmware.
Plato is another one, haven’t used it.

I did this, but I'm afraid to connect my kobo to the internet because I think they'll fuarrrk up my koreader setup. But surely there's a way to make this work with a connection, right? I just want to use koreader's rss downloader :(

I've used KOReader's RSS function with a hacked Kobo before and it worked fine. You'll be perfectly fine, lainon. Just go for it.

you can install parabola on it and just plug it into ethernet i think. it's just linux on an e-reader tablet. you should be able to use a web browser on it.
http://www.davisr.me/projects/parabola-rm/
it's a 100%* free software and drm free solution. The only catch is that the wifi drivers are intentionally not included because they aren't free. That's a positive for me but probably just a pain in the neck for those who aren't as autistic as i am.
i cannot personally vouch for it as well.
*not sure what kind of firmware or whatnot it runs

I got a pocketbook inkpad color based on what an anon said here.
Its not the fastest, but really good for the price.

This is a dream for me as well. I hope inkpad can release such a device.
Else if you have money to throw
