How come no one ever talks about Gemini or Gopher on here. Im wondering, is it any good? What do lains think about it?

>>65725 I think Gopher is really neat. There's a lot less pressure to have a stylized website, because it's just text. Plus it's a lot more fluid experience with jumping between pages as it's just text, browse it with a keyboard only. Gemini, I've never used it but is there much reason for it to exist (other than for fun?) it seems to not provide much more over gopher.

>>65725 I like Gopher, and run one of the few hundred Gopher servers left as a mirror of my website actually nicer than the original, and I also wrote the server software. As for Gemini, I told Solarpunk it was a bad idea years back. All Gemini does is take the ways people were abusing Gopher and codify them into a special protocol that also requires TLS and so has absolutely no chance of being implemented by an individual in any reasonable amount of time. Gemini offers absolutely nothing of any interest, and I was sick of seeing it mentioned wherever Gopher was mentioned years ago.

So, theres no hope for Gemini? I was kind of excited. Wanted to see atleast somewhat of a resemblance of the old internet.

>>65728 I have hope for gemini, my guess is that more and more people will leave the web for smaller networks since ChatGPT got released... Just imagine you use a search engine to look for whatever and the first ten links are auto-generated "AI" garbage. I'm glad things like gopher and gemini exist. I also think that gemini is a sort of evolution of gopher but with encryption added to it.

>>65728 I like Gemini. It's very cosy and fast. I think it's a little tough to search for sites on it though.

>>65728 >>65729 >>65730 The internet is dead. The sooner you accept that the sooner your life will cease being a pain.

>>65728 Gopher is simpler, and it's easy to use even with just TCP alone, that's to mean without a dedicated client. Let me put it this way: Gemini has a special little format called gemtext, and yet gemtext lacks even the capabilities of a video terminal, and has fewer formatting options than printing presses centuries ago. There's no reason to do this beyond fetishism of the status quo disguised as minimalism. >>65729 Gemini has nothing to do with ChatGPT and has absolutely no defenses against anything it could cause. This feels like an excuse to tie in Gemini with something actually a little impressive. Anyway, this is all people write over Gemini, how they're writing over Gemini, and it's masturbatory. If there would be interest, I can share something that would actually defend against the encroaching masses of nonsense.

Both are too dead and there's not very much interesting content on them. Gemini in particular seems to attract people whose content is bland and who lean on using gemini to make it interesting. They're also too simple. Gopher has an excuse since it's a product of a different time, but Gemini's focus on being simple enough to implement a renderer in an hour means it misses out on markup that could be really useful (tables, inline links, citations, some layout information, inline form input) and leads to workarounds specific to gemini clients. Form input in gemini is also a massive mess where multiple inputs need either multiple redirects or the user has to manually format their single request with whatever capsule specific format is required to pass multiple values in one form. And that's hoping that your gemini client displays the prompt for it correctly. Or the capsule author decides to use multiple links, like in botany's music tool, which ends up with an ugly page of links. But using client certificates for authentication is nice.

>>65732 >Gemini has nothing to do with ChatGPT and has absolutely no defenses against anything it could cause. That's not what I meant, the web is going to get destroyed by models like GPT-3 whether we like it or not. And you're right, gemini does not have a defense against GPT-3 except for the fact that people don't have a financial incentive to host a gemini pod since there's little to no tracking (yet) for purposes like targeted advertisements.

>>65736 To be fair to him, I know of no one other than myself who links to Gopher holes here.

>>65736 its a GPT-Lain bot many such cases
