What have you remapped Caps Lock to? For me, it's an extra Control. I also set up Vim and programs with Vim emulation (Emacs and IDEA) to exit insert mode when I press Control-Space. That way, my comfort is increased whether I use a program with regular bindings or Vim bindings.

Sometimes I think it might be nice to experiment with non-keyboard layouts. But eventually I'm faced with the sad fact that I still have to use standard keyboards when interacting with other people's computers, and it seems like a waste to learn something that will increase my efficiency at home but make me struggle elsewhere due to having gotten used to something different.

lol I have to check cause its been so long that I've had it as a control key. Big part of my window management, too. In addition to all the obvious control key uses...

Escape. It's much easier to press QWERTY's default control than its default escape, and I find escape to be more useful than control anyway.

I swap left control and caps lock. I still use caps lock fairly frequently. I always use ^[ for esc if it is supported.

>>65694 I agree. I mostly use Acme now, a powerful editor that takes full advantage of a three-button mouse. I don't have a mouse to carry around with my laptop (I wouldn't even want to), but Acme (at least on Macs) has support for three and two button swipes and presses, emulating a three button mouse. It takes some time to get used to, I was once a vim and emacs user and swore by keyboard only workflow. But the mouse, perhaps suprisingly, is a powerful and expressive tool for editing text. I recommend it for anyone. Acme has a lot of cool features that I didn't mention here. you can read more at http://acme.cat-v.org

Depends whether I'm using a laptop or desktop; on a laptop I always swap the Ctrl and Capslock keys but on a desktop I keep the keys mapped to default because it's easier to palm the Ctrl key than hold down the Capslock with my pinky. I never remove the Capslock from the keymap since I use it occasionally I remap other keys through my WM (EXWM) for media functionality but I like to separate out the simpler stuff like the above in my xmodmap config

>>65694 >it seems like a waste to learn something that will increase my efficiency at home but make me struggle elsewhere due to having gotten used to something different. I am a ergonomics radical ever since I fuarrrked my wrists on my laptop. My personal set up is two trackballs one on each hand (left = the logitech marble, right = the scroll wheeled Kensington orbit), my keyboard is kinesis advantage2 with Ctrl & alt remapped to pointer- & middle finger, and my keyboard layout is programmer Dvorak. It has been like this for 5 years almost. From experience I can say, QWERTY remains in muscle memory when using other computers, with a rare hickup here and there. On my laptop and my kinesis qwerty is undoable, but I mean why would I use it there? Using a mouse on my left hand just made me better with my left hand. I do think the kinesis makes me involuntarily hit spacebar on those wide spacebars twice sometimes, but thats a fine hickup to live with compared to overusing my left hand and hitting shift everytime I want (curly) brackets, and whatever. You do have to get used to the numbers, but for a lot of numberplay the kinesis has a chill keypad. I would not recommend the kinesis tho, if I would pick now I would recommend going full ergo and glue/tape a real fully split keyboard to the chair or something. The macros OK the kinesis are useless imo, too few possible. A full hardcoded programmer dvorak was not possible. I mean wtf. But I do highly recommend switching keyboard layout or just keyboard & stuff like that even though its easier said than done. Switching keyboard layout took me 2 months of real struggle. And 1 month more to become as fast as I was on QWERTY. And I am a extensive computer user as may be deduced. The matrix & variable depth keys are great tho on the kinesis. Also soykafty about kinesis is not enough spare keys imo. >>65690 Worst case scenario I would have bound menu or hyper to caps, but I use caps every once in a while... So its caps. I used to have to it escape while I was a vim man, until I switched to Dvorak, then I used ,. as escape sequence, but I have configured my own vanilla Emacs now.

>>65690 Caps Lock is Ctrl and both Shifts are Caps Lock. It doesn't make sense that Caps Lock is way up there on the home row when Ctrl, which is much more used, is waaay down there. But the current mainstream keyboard layout has so many things wrong with it anyway. >>65694 If you use two layouts for long enough you end up getting used to both, granted you'll be better on the one you use most. I say this as a Dvorak in the sheets, Qwerty on the streets person.
