yt-dlp -x is fine and all, but sometimes a browser extension would be more handy, even better if when a YouTube/SoundCloud page is already open and cache can be salvaged.
Any recommendations?

I just browse YouTube through an invidious instance and use the download option.

I was just about to recommend this. Try y.com.sb

I personally use this fork of yt-local (https://git.sr.ht/~heckyel/yt-local). It'll run a local instance, and you can get the download links from there. I also redirect to it with Redirector (https://git.sr.ht/~heckyel/yt-local#usage). There's a video on it by BugsWriter. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fzwqrqwcoU)

Remember that adorable thing every web browser does?
1. Open image/video/whatever in new tab, check the about:cache, the image is there, on your disk/ram, but in some obscure /tmp directory.
2. Click "Save image" in pop-up menu.
3. It starts downloading the whole thing from the server all over again at 10kbps or whatever instead of just moving files already present on your disk.

But why though? I haven't checked but this might have been long discussed in every major browser's issue tracker. I could guess it may be about cache control policies or such, but still.
