Mastodon has started to gain legitimate traction what does lainchan make of it? if you're not familiar with it mastodon is a twitter clone with several improvements, most notably decentralisation and federation, this allows three feeds, one for people you follow, one for people on your instance and one for the federated network, it seems to be more focused on socialisation compared to conventional sites like twitter/facebook that're primarily for the consumption of media(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf. Please provide your own opinion on Mastadon and federated microblogging, otherwise we should just make this thread about prehistoric elephants. Prehistoric elephants were cool, especially in the ice age.)

I heard good about Mastodon. I never got into it because of it's low userbase and honestly didn't need it. Mastodon > Twitter 100% ever since its creation though. A bunch of artist I follow have an account there for a long time. Recently they finally reached the 1 million user count on the platform. I'm honestly surprised it took that long...
Joe Bloggs · 2022-11-08 13:43
It's a difficult piece of software to set up and run, all for what - just to have more social media? IRC, XMPP, personal websites, and email threads are better. I see no compelling reason to use Mastodon over any of that. https://マリウス.com/mailman3-on-openbsd-71/

Just gave it a try, so far so good. Even though I'm not really a social media person, anything that decentralizes the web and takes power away from big corporations is a step in the right direction, IMO. >>65007 Is this an important point? You can interact with people in the other instances anyway.
The Fin · 2022-11-08 22:27
>>65025 >You can interact with people in the other instances anyway. Yeah, but generally you want to find an instance with people you'd get along with. You have to take into account the possibility that someone you want to interact with is on an instance that might be blocked on whatever you want to join. Plus I know some servers (like Pleroma) have a public timeline that lets you see what everyone on that instance is posting, so it's easier to be seen among the locals and make friends with them.
Void · 2022-11-08 23:03
>>65027 True. Still, unless you're into Nazi furry porn, you can probably find an instance with like-minded people that's not derezzed on most other instances. Alternatively, you can always host your own instance. Then you have full control.

I used to like mastodon/pleroma. Used to waste lots of time on that network. There's some chill people interspersed amongst the lefties and righties. I ended up deleting my original account after a moment of profound lucidity. I rarely log in any more, I think I realized I just dislike twitter-style media. Some advice: 1) you will see retarded soykaf on the federated timeline. It is best not to interact, nothing good ever comes of it. At one point someone went on a 30-post tirade at me because I said that maybe richard stallman wasn't a dangerous pedophile. 2) use a small, chill server that federates with other servers you like and doesn't align itself politically. I recommend raru.re. Wizards.zone used to be the best server on the platform, RIP. There's always admin drama on the leftie side and the rightie side is just full of people who think shouting 'nigger' is funny and subversive. Tech wise, ActivityPub is a pile of hot garbage and the Mastodon project has consistently made it worse. But it's what people use, whaddaya gonna do.

The whole concept of federation is very appealing, but I don't know why everyone just wants to make Twitter clones using it. It might be good for sharing art and stuff you've made, but it's dogshit for discussion. The only people with visibility are those with lots of followers and whoever gets re(tweet|blogg|toot|whatever)ed by them. Extreme, ridiculous ideas are what get all the internet points. So the moderate ideas all get buried now, whereas in the days of forums, they'd have been just as visible as all the crazy posts and would keep them in check. Can't a forum server be made that uses ActivityPub? I mean, if we can have something like Peertube then I don't see why we can't have good old forums again. No upvotes or followers determining your visibility, posts are sorted chronologically, threads last more than a day. Maybe with federation they'd be less cliquey than regular forums have become now.

>>65073 >1) federation is slow and unreliable its also pointless and you have to be autistic to even fall for it. this little idea of having "domains" for your protocol, like xmpp or whatever the hell nntpchan is (nntp is literal email-tier obsolete garbage), is so stunningly pointless that the basic intelligence of the user/dev has to be questioned when they mention that they use one of these. federation serves literally no purpose. you could just as well use a content addressable storage and put all your data there. what the actual hell difference does federation make? that some faggit can comb over data / users (in the case of xmpp) and choose which one he likes or not? with freenet the data is just there until it disappears because nobody wants it anymore. they even have WoT to filter "stuff i dont like" and ergo it is actually stuff i dont like instead of stuff the admin doesnt like. problem solved.

I have also doubts that the federation model can scale to twitter-level number of users, I doubt there are going to be enough people interested in hosting servers for strangers for free. Other than this, I haven't found anything interesting on it. I initially made an account on twitter because I often got there because people linked good tweets elsewhere, I have yet to find someone link a good mastodon post... Twitter is probably 100x or 1000x larger, even accounting for the new huge influx of people to Mastodon. Also, posts on Mastodon propagate by "boosts", and are ordered chronologically. So there's no algorithm the pushing things to the top based on engagement. Stuff is bound to be less "viral", and more organic.

>>65935 >Now the admin is private messaging me, telling me to leave the server because he got multiple complaints about me following an account that is on another server that has other accounts that are bad. So he wants me to leave or he'll just delete my account before I can get my follow list out. >I kept trying to follow as many accounts as I could so I could see the known network branch out. sounds like the admin doesn't understand the tools at his disposal. if he doesn't want to federate with that instance, he should block it, not kick you for following an account that doesn't break his rules.
Mitnick · 2022-12-26 22:31
>>66130 Or move to a different server, or spin up your own, baka. You're basically complaining that other people freely choose to do things in a way you don't like.

>>65935 >>66135 Admin is power tripping and is not interested in resolving the issue, only in punishing wrongthink. Take your follow list *now* (it takes as long as the time it took to write your post) and leave. Do not reply to him and do not post in this thread until you have done this.

>>65896 Lmao, I've seen hardcore lefties who you probably think are the problem making this exact same criticism, but in reverse -- "this platform is too open"
Crazy Jake · 2022-12-27 00:35
>>66131 >>66140 >>66142 you guys obviously have no idea about the way such platforms work and what makes them interesting. your only reflex to problems are generic statements like "just make your own instance lol" or "why do you hate freedom?" - that's not the issue here. what twitter made so successful was the melange of topics and people and for a while it was enough to just block/mute people you didn't want to pop up in your timeline. the problematic wave of bans began right in 2016 and only stopped when musk took over the platform. mastodon looks nice with all the federation, but it's being abused, because now every janny who knows how to run an instance and to market it to "refugees" gets the power to decide whats happening in everyones timeline. like in germany, when a prominent tv personality advertised a german instance and after people looked at it closer, it turned out to be made by someone from his staff - this is unheard of. "move to a different server" - what kind of solution is that? "move around until you find a server that's not managed by a powertripping asshole with nothing better to do than to handpick users who's taste in music he dosen't like and kick them off his server" - and what's next, every server is excluding other servers so in general the federation is dead, creating bubbles of likeminded instances - yeah, that's REALLY great. btw, i have no idea why the "old internet" is brought up here, i'm online since 1998 and such problems simply never existed before the rise of social media. and statements like "A mastodon admin might read your DM, but (...)" are really heavy given the problem, that many mastodon servers are now run and populated by sparetime fed informants who get off throwing people under the bus for being whateverphobic.
Bobby Newmark · 2022-12-27 00:47
>>66145 > "move to a different server" - what kind of solution is that? Its the same idea as "vote with your dollar". Why do you think people are leaving twitter in the first place? >and what's next, every server is excluding other servers so in general the federation is dead, creating bubbles of likeminded instances - yeah, that's REALLY great. Vast majority of servers, including almost all the big servers, are not ban-happy with the defederation. That bubbling problem you speak of has happened multiple times over the years and the bubbles always die out in favor of the large, mostly-connected network.
John Rain · 2022-12-27 01:48
>>66147 >Its the same idea as "vote with your dollar". Why do you think people are leaving twitter in the first place? that's the thing: they don't. it's just some "elon bad"-pundits that put their mastodon-account in their name and keep on tweeting.
Jens Hansen · 2022-12-27 02:10
>>66152 Strange that its going along with a massive increase in mastodon users, many of whom self-identify as former twitter users. I'm sure they're all bots though.
藤原純一 · 2022-12-27 02:46
>>66154 creating a mastodon account doesn't necessarily mean that they completley abandoned twitter. i've seen this several times in the past 10, 12 years, when people left for "better" services, like app.net and they all crawled back within two weeks because they couldn't get their dopamine fix there. remember all the celebs who vowed to move to canada once trump took office? it's the same crap all over again.
Erik Johansson · 2022-12-27 03:09
>>66155 Does regularly using a mastodon account mean that they've switched over from twitter? Because daily active user counts have also spiked on most of the big instances, in a way that is easily observed if you just use the network.
Guthrie · 2022-12-27 03:42
>>66156 >Twitter sign-ups and active user minutes reach an all-time high, even though controversies surrounding the social media platform remain. >An average of more than two million users are signing up on the platform daily, a 66 percent increase from the same period in 2021. https://screenrant.com/twitter-sign-ups-increase-new-features-coming/ i don't think the userbase cares.
Donna Hawthorne · 2022-12-27 04:22
>>66145 > "move to a different server" - what kind of solution is that? one that works. There is a feature that allows you to export your profile and move it new server. I think that is pretty neat.
Boris Grishenko · 2022-12-27 06:07
>>66158 yeah, nothing more "neat" than to have to set up a new account again and hope that you can get your followers/followees back, because some amateur admin didn't like your anime pfp.
Special Agent Bob · 2022-12-27 11:00
>>66157 So you believe that since people are signing up for twitter, it means that the existing userbase is not leaving for mastodon? Curious non sequitur there. The vast majority of mastodon users are former twitter users, either from this round of migration or one of the other ones. This cannot be denied.
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2022-12-27 20:22
>>66145 "Waahhhh I have to follow the rules of the person who puts in the resources and efforts to maintain an instance!!!" Did you think online services fall out of the sky? Did you think it was really any different when you used Twitter's servers? You're a fuarrrking imbecile.

looks like twitter is killing off third party clients and some apis, since i refuse to use that abortion they call their mobile app, i'm going to look at mastodon - too bad there's literally no one i find remotly interesting enough to follow.
Delilah · 2023-01-14 01:34
tapods (the developers of the popular twitter client "tweetbot") are working on a mastodon-client, wich could help getting more people on there since their twitter client already is very popular and often described as the best possible client available. might be a breakthrough for the platform for normal people (and everyone who don't want to suffer the abysmal ux mastodon delivers out of the box). https://tapbots.com/ivory/

Mastedon is soykaf because its a just higher concentration of all the people who made twitter terrible in the first place. I see the same problem with gemini these days too. It becomes more obvious because there isn't bigger enough pool to drown those people out.
