New ThinkPad For Linux/Windows?
Frank Garza · 2022-10-14 15:15
Hello. Up until a week ago I had been using a T430 as my daily driver. I had been dual booting Linux Mint and Windows (each of which were installed to their own separate SSD). But the motherboard failed and I am in search of a new laptop that has a lot of the features I loved from the T430: plenty of ports, room for more than one SSD, and removable battery. I have been wanting a system that's a little faster too.
I've been looking into it, and a ThinkPad P51 seems like a good option for what I'm looking for.
Anybody else have this laptop? Or this there a better laptop out there for what I'm seeking?

>soykaf display compared to same year's rivals
>the precessor P50 was throthling and fans were super loud
Do yourself a favour and if you lust after a workstation get a Dell Precision or HP Zbook both of them cover your needs and provide much better hardware, also the dGPU on those can be replaced - thinkpads don't provide that.
Also a soykaf thread, there already is an active Thinkpad discussion. Next time lurk before you so mindlessly kill a thread.

>provide much better hardware
In what way? Are they more durable? Are they easier to repair?
Also, neither have an AMD option, so price to performance is guaranteed to be worse than some thinkpad options.

In a way that screws are ment to last, the whole specification list was not constructed from some parts that were currently on the stock in Lenovo warehouse, the design of the machine was actually made to be functional according to architecture blue prints and the motherboard was not made with planned obsolence in mind.

are system76 laptops also a good option for a workstation?

You're asking a guy who cares about build quality whether rebranded Clevo's are a good option.

If you can, get a desktop instead! And buy the parts and build your PC yourself. You can save some money in the long run because you can upgrade your PC (or you can just replace the broken parts).
First, use https://www.logicalincrements.com/ and pick a build. Then use https://pcpartpicker.com/ to customize the build. Save the link and ask in ITT or the tech questions thread for feedback. Also, use a PSU calculator (https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator) and get a slightly better PSU than what it recommends you.
Some part recommendations:
>CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600 or Intel Core i5 12400
Both Intel CPUs and AMD CPUs are botnets, so pick the one that's cheaper.
>MoBo: Asus is a good brand. MSI is okay, too.
Note: You need a different motherboard for Intel and AMD CPUs! Check the specs of the CPU you chose and find out what kind of CPU socket it needs.
>RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB (2x8GB) 3200MHz CL16
>GPU: Radeon RX 6600 (like MSI Radeon RX 6600 MECH 2X 8G) or Radeon RX 6600 XT
or Asus GeForce RTX 2060 DUAL OC EVO but note that Nvidia requires you to use non-free drivers, while the FOSS AMDGPU driver just works!
>Mass storage: Get a Western Digital or Toshiba HDD. If you want a SSD for your OS, get a Crucial MX500 or Samsung EVO SSD.
>Case: Fractal Design Focus G
>PSU: get a corsair or Seasonic PSU! Don't try to save money by buying a cheap (and bad) PSU!
>Mouse: Logitech MX518 Legendary (if you can still find it)
>Keyboard: Logitech Keyboard K120 or something else
>laptop
If you need the laptop for portability, then I think Dell laptops are pretty good option.

P.S.
If you don't have the money atm (or if you don't need a dedicated GPU), you should buy Intel Core i5-12400 CPU because it has integrated graphics. Just don't confuse it with Intel Core i5-12400F that's the same model without the integrated GPU! The integrated graphics are good enough for web browsing, watching YT videos, coding, etc. And like the AMDGPU driver, the Intel graphics drivers just works. Also, if you are sacred about building the PC yourself, then don't be! The manual that comes with your motherboard contains a list of all slots it has and there is a picture that shows where each slots are located. If you are still unsure, watch a video on YT.

i actually assembled my 2nd desktop recently, with a somewhat similar list of parts.
i just need a laptop to work on my distro's package/build scripts since i'm usually not at home. i do have a used x220t but its display is flickering under heavy load, so i figured i'd just get a brand new laptop instead.

Doesn't seem like anyone is being too helpful. Scoring a good deal will make you happy. If you liked the thinkpad T series then you should stick with it. I would suggest a T450S. You can get one relatively cheap and a couple spare batteries to hot swap. I believe they also have an msata ssd slot for a second drive. If you don't like the screen you can upgrade it too. If you were daily driving a T430 before then you'll be happy with the upgrade and cost savings. Hunt around for a good deal on a T series. Good luck

samelain reporting back in. I think that I might have soykafted on Thinkpads for a bit too much.
Recent update: I found a nice deal on Thinkpad P52. While I still pretty much share the same opinion as before the P52 got tremendously better compared to P50. The full hd screen is much better, the color accuracy matches my 1440p dell laptop. The fans don't kick as often as on the P50, they also don't sound as loud as P50, the battery remainded great. The keyboard however makes squeaky noises on press (probably by the age, haven't ever seen soykaf like this). It's got newer CPU but it still runs hot on the bottom - however you will not notice it while it's put on the desk.
So yeah, even while it's still a Lenovo I feel satisfied with the purchase and I thought it might be worth to "change" my opinion on the previous respond.
Maybe I was wroung and Lenovo can actually pull out something that will be worth its price after a half of decade so you can buy it reused. Anyway both of the mentioned Thinkpad models were tested same year running newest Fedora Workstation.
