Let's create a Lain's Guide to better Tech Life

The Phantom Phreak · 2022-10-06 12:02
>>>/tech/64262 >You guys should make a repository or something like that yourself for guiding people towards better alternatives. >Something like Lain's Guide to better Tech Life? >it could have stuff like Privacy , Security , Tech Recommendations , OS Recommendations etc etc Use this thread to post stuff like Privacy, Security, Tech Recommendations, OS Recommendations and then someone can compile everything posted here into one repository.
Vasya Pupkin · 2022-10-06 13:15
>>64269 not a bad idea but I mean, there's already privacyguides.org, which is reasonably good at both giving good privacy/security while being palatable for normal people. I think we need a more specific focus than just "a better tech life". Who's the audience? what are we specifically aiming for? Are we going to be freetards or make compromises, how many compromises? etc
Apoc · 2022-10-06 14:33
Yeah could this be maybe a little more specific? Otherwise, 99% of people are just gonna be parroting the same stuff that's on these sites: https://thetinhat.com/index.html https://prism-break.org/en/ https://leddit.xyz/r/privacy/wiki/index https://www.privacytools.io/ https://theprivacyguide.org/ https://myshadow.org/ https://paranoidsbible.tumblr.com/ https://droid-break.info/ https://inteltechniques.com/index.html https://gitlab.com/Attedz/AndroidPrivacyGuide/-/tree/master https://digdeeper.club/ https://spyware.neocities.org/ https://restoreprivacy.com/ https://privacyheroes.io/ https://framasoft.org/en/ https://datadetoxkit.org/en/home/ https://defensivecomputingchecklist.com/ https://www.eff.org/wp/behind-the-one-way-mirror https://www.uvm.edu/~dguber/POLS21/articles/solove.htm https://github.com/tycrek/degoogle https://fuarrrkoffgoogle.de/decentralize-all/ https://github.com/Lissy93/personal-security-checklist https://thenewoil.org/ https://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Collection:PRISM https://switching.software/ https://emailselfdefense.fsf.org/en/ https://randhome.io/resources/ https://nomoregoogle.com/ https://anonymousplanet.org/guide.html https://usemumble.neocities.org/ https://www.socialcooling.com/ https://github.com/pluja/awesome-privacy/blob/main/README.md https://gofoss.net/ https://ethical.net/resources/ https://github.com/arkenfox/user.js https://github.com/humanetech-community/awesome-humane-tech Right, I'm gonna stop. I've got a soykaf load more of those bookmarked. This generic topic by OP has been talked about to death. Pick something specific we can dig deeper into.
Unspecified · 2022-10-06 16:24
OP here. I honestly don't give a fuarrrk about making another one of these. I was just helping out some lain. There's no need for another Privacy Guides, Privacy Tools, Privacy Raccoon, etc.
Hitomi · 2022-10-06 20:48
>>64276 >OP here. I honestly don't give a fuarrrk about making another one of these. Just because of some links and an opinion, you don't give one now? Seems two faced to me, contradicting why you started this thread in the first place. I would have stuck by my word and accepted that this thread could possibly be another one of those but say that I care still about this sort of thing, instead of acting like I don't and that there's no need for more of these.
Eldon Tyrell · 2022-10-06 20:54
>>64276 Stop worrying about what other people say, start somewhere even if people say you are talking about something that's "talked about to death" because there might be someone here who hears about something new for the first time and you wouldn't even know it.
Tequila · 2022-10-06 21:32
low tech + slow living https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_technology https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slow_living
lainon · 2022-10-07 04:17
>>64271 Don't stop lainon, I've come to know quite a few new ones I didn't know existed. My interests are in maths, philosophy, computers, psychology, cryptography, DIYs; you got the idea. I also have so many bookmarks, like blogs, articles, manifestos, ezines, personal sites, cryptography, I can share those as well if you want :) >>64282 yes, i'd also love to see maybe a static site hosted on some cloud source hosting platforms like codeberg, gitlab or others, where lainons would share their life experiences and wisdom on tech and life.
Tyrell Wellick · 2022-10-07 12:02
>>64286 >I also have so many bookmarks, like blogs, articles, manifestos, ezines, person al sites, cryptography, I can share those as well if you want :) Different lain, please share.
Acid Burn · 2022-10-07 17:01
>>64283 Sounds like just living in the 90's with a corded phone, one beige computer in the house, and a tube TV.
Eldon Tyrell · 2022-10-07 22:21
>>64292 alright, i'll make repo, a well organized one, keep visiting this thread, i'll share the link once its done, maybe a week, yes i have lots but not well organized
Delilah · 2022-10-08 02:18
The topic of internet privacy has been talked about to death but a repository of definitive information that is consistently updated could prove useful but resource intensive.
Acid Burn · 2022-10-08 07:36
>>64300 Yes internet privacy has been discussed so much that new discussions should be derezzed. Sage + cringe
Morpheus · 2022-10-08 15:41
>>64300 But to what scope. That's the point. privacyguides already does that. Maybe something more specific than "internet privacy"?
Hacker · 2022-10-08 16:10
>>64316 Like escaping the botnet? Living a simple, minimalist lifestyle?
Yamaoto Toshi · 2022-10-08 18:41
>>64317 I think that would be a diversion from the other soykaf. Living a simple minimalist lifestyle should be promoted more in privacy guides as less tech = less botnet.
John Doe · 2022-10-09 09:14
>>64318 I agree. Instead privacy guides are focusing on more tech and alternatives instead of doing away with soykaf.
Frog Poster · 2022-10-10 03:07
>>64276 Thanks Lain , it was mentioned by me. I thought this would be a cool thing to do. I meant there is knowledge here in this board but is spread out , I wanted to compile all the knowledge lainons have on topics like tech , security , programming etc and make it a big repository.
Frog Poster · 2022-10-14 13:32
Lains , let us make it a resource thread , just share everything you know here.
Leto Atreides I · 2022-10-14 15:15
>>64271 This is how these threads always go. An absolutely massive infodump that nobody is ever going to actually click on and go through its just going to sit in bookmarks forever. Or a bunch of pdfs of massive tomes that nobody will ever read. If you're going to make something digestible make it actually digestible
Frog Poster · 2022-10-15 01:06
>>64436 There should be a lainchan wiki.
Koos van der Merwe · 2022-10-15 06:50
>>64451 I recently thought that there should be a modern/up to date cyberpunk version of "steal this book". A wiki or a long collaborative document would probably be a useful format. Much like the original, it should be a full guide for the lifestyle.
Mentat · 2022-10-15 07:28
>>64456 steal this book ruined the lives of many people living that lifestyle exposing their ways of doing things so that they could never do it again
Frog Poster · 2022-10-15 10:35
>>64457 Never really heard about that book honestly. Can you expand on it.
Frog Poster · 2022-10-15 10:40
>>64456 Not really a cyberpunkesque lifestyle but in general Let me expand , there are a lot of threads here created in technology related to various topic. I just want a wiki where a lot of the useful information will be stored. Not just a garbage dump of info but useful info with well curated opinions , recommendations etc etc. of course , it can expand from tech to anything else, great contribution project for this imageboard imo.
The Guy · 2022-12-17 18:21
>>64286 could you link some zines? I don't have a particular topic in mind, just whatever you think are interesting or possibly your favorite!
Batou · 2023-02-01 20:44
>>64286 Provide all the resources you can regarding philosophy, computers, cryptography, and DIYs
Jane Doe · 2023-02-02 03:29
>>64269 Being secure is only one side to living a better tech life. Just securing your home from intruders isn't going to make it comfier by itself. If cyberpunk is worth anything, maybe it's how do we live with technology in way that's better, more comfortable, less mentally draining, or destructive? How do you live a healthy and satisfying tech life? I know it's a bit vulgar, but think of it like sex advice. How do I do this more pleasurably, more comfortably, or artistically etc. beyond just a question of safety?
