Why are MediaTek chips so abundant in smartphones nowadays? They used to be in only the soykaftiest of devices but I've seen quite a few new midrangers and even a flagship or two that had an MT processor listed in the specs. What's going on with Qualcomm?

1. The margins on non-flagship ($900+) phones are not great. A slightly cheaper soc is probably more appealing than you think. 2. Qualcomm was in a lot of Android phones on the strength of its modems. Mediatek has had a long time to catch up.

Qualcomm is doing fine, Mediatek catched up though. Msdoatek is cheaper and most people don't care about SoC, so manufacturers are not worried to use it anymore. Qualcomm is still better option, because of CAF though.
