Death of Thinkpads (for real this time)
Yet Another Lainon · 2022-08-15 16:47
For years I didn't pay a lot of mind to the complaints about Lenovo Thinkpads. Yeah they weren't as good as the IBM models, but they were still better than most other new laptops of the time. Well, the situation has changed drastically.
At work, we ordered a big shipment of new Thinkpad laptops. Of course they were late, which is kind of forgivable with supply chain issues. But then we started using them. Since then, more than half of the laptops have died. Often within weeks of setting them up. I have multiple coworkers who are on their third laptop now. These things are absolute trash, and I'd never recommend post-2020 Thinkpads to anyone.
What's worse, is I have a strong suspicion that this is now the norm in both consumer and business laptops. Used laptops or self-build desktop are likely the only reliable option anymore.

framework laptops seem to be acceptable in quality, and the open standard for the modules is a nice plus.
that said, the massive push for planned obsolescence and "infinite growth" has really destroyed overall laptop quality. why make a quality product when you can instead push the "next and greatest" every single year? it's all soykaf

framework also wants to keep that model but instead of selling a brand new laptop every year, they incentivize their users to "upgrade" their motherboards, hinges or whatever they may have "improved" in the last months.
It's still a better approach and if I replace my modern thinkpad in the future, I may be willingly to spend $1000 instead of the $500 I usually splurge in a 2 or 3 years old thinkpad. But the predatory capitalist economic model didn't change with the framework laptop or other brands that may show up in the future. The best solution atm is a desktop pc but I guess they will also try to solder as much vital components as possible into the motherboards in the future.

>Since then, more than half of the laptops have died. Often within weeks of setting them up.
I noticed, lenovo likes using samsung stuff. I had one that had samsung LCD and I've been bothered so much by that one dead pixel it had plus the display was beyond saving. Even though it was TFT wide angle (non-IPS) it looked greenish although I was able to calibrate it at some point. It just kept getting issues after the warranty was exactly over, the HDD would "click" but somehow I resuscitated it by banging on it (well right now it has plenty bad sectors long after it got fixed but it's still usable as scratch disk). Samsung (drives) are also seagate, maybe that's the reason it sucked. Also, the screen had died on its own for some reason, I'm thinking since I realigned the panel (it was twisted z axis by like 2 degrees) this caused the "hack" they did to revert the issue with the display (I know that there's a hack that you apply pressure on screen to fix displays with vertical lines).
The nu lenovo thinkpads have similar quality as ideapads despite how hard they try to cope on making it look like one, they all have that hard-to-type keyboard (accutype tech they said) which is like kicking dead whales down the beach a lot, causing me a lot of typing issues while coding or writing soykaf. They also use seagate which had been unreliable to me (and at the same time these drives were made of the same year there was contamination in seagate china factories that had high failure rate, good thing I backed up my stuff accumulated very long time ago).
Just look at OP pic, it's the nu "accutype" keyboard that I hate so much (hard to press, ignores keystrokes, and shaky). The old gen thinkpad keyboards were godlike and I also thought of making controller board to interpret the old keyboards for use as USB but never got around in doing so.
So in short, if you're buying one, expect a Samsung LCD which is yellowish or bad color (also preconfigured to reduce blue light due to their europe market but at the cost of yellowish panel with blue-light reduction patched via firmware), and it has Seagate drives possibly recycled from old platters(?) I dunno but I don't like their quality, it also heats up lots according to my sensors.

The writing was on the wall with the T480. Type-C power ports soldered directly to the motherboard. Very likely to fail and impossible to replace without a powerful hot air station and some microsoldering skill. Not even Apple does this.
Framework or bust if you have the money and you're buying new.

Frameworks laptops are expensive as fuarrrk and the website is clownflared. Nobody gives a soykaf about right to repair. Nobody. We all just want the latest and greatest soykaf. Right to repair is dead. Long live planned obsolescence. Long live treating devices as disposable products ready to be thrown away within four years. That's more secure.
Our best option is to just build our own desktop but not only is that expensive, but what happens when all the different computer parts like the processor and hard drive have planned obsolescence? Used laptops aren't good either since they're obsolete now.
You're just going to have to accept laptops and desktops as disposable products meant to be thrown away after a while. That's just the way it is.

i fully agree, my statements were not mutually exclusive.
buying new in general, framework included, just seems like a complete waste of money. and all those linux books like system76 are just soykafty clevo designs that feel terrible to use, and break extremely easily.
if you have to buy, always buy used. if you need a more powerful machine, build a desktop/server. if you don't learn about the hardware and software you use, and how to repair and maintain it, you're going to be forced into the loop of planned obsolescence.
Dujour · 2022-08-19 08:51
Man this thread came around just as my current machine is dying.
My T450s is on its last legs after being used everyday including as a van laptop, and there is nothing worth replacing it with on the market really, The X13 is attractive with its 16:10 screen but its soldered everything except memory and the QC and build aren't what they used to be, the T14 and E14 are meh at best with 16:9 screens still, with panels that are worse than the one in my current machine at that, consumer laptops are all garbage that break under linux, the linux specific machines on the market are all clevo garbage outside of the software support and the framework is very expensive, from a very new company, only supports one storage solution inside (I have a ton of SATA SSDs I want to use) and there is no trackpoint.
If I could figure out how to fix the ribbon cable connectors on my current machine so that the trackpoint didn't stop working if I changed out the keyboard I would try and push this dual core for another 5 years, but I need something more powerful and I'm staring down a load of soykaf choices.

We were given Dell Latitude 3320s at my job which shipped with trackpad dropout and phantom scrolling when you release your fingers at the bottom of the trackpad after normally scrolling. On that, white streaks that developed horizontally across the LCD over around a month of use. These are ~950 dollar laptops and are complete pieces of junk.

Couldn't bring myself to go through with it, got an e14 second hand instead
The framework is interesting but
>3 hours battery life on linux
>No trackpoint/pointing stick option
>Glossy screen
>Mediocre touchpad even in windows nevermind linux, that starts getting loose in a year apparently
>The little expansion cards don't shut off when the computer hibernates so they constantly draw power
>4 ports max lel
>That keyboard layout
>Buying new electronics from a corporation is something I just can't bring myself to do.
I just can't, I guess I keep eating the 16:9 soldered RAM prolefeed Lenovo pumps out for another 4 years
If the Chinese guy that makes the X200 modernized machines on 51nb would answer his emails I would have considered buying one of those but I can't really wait that long anyway.
I'd like to see framework get bigger purely so in 5-10 years time their products are available second hand w/some model variance but I'm not holding out hope, its kind of shameful that one of the best modern laptops has this many gaping problems that were solved decades ago though.

Definitely unusual on a modern laptop, what distro are you running? You're aware that sometimes you have to enable certain power management settings yourself, right? Every laptop I've ever had has actually gotten better battery life on Linux, which is why I see this as unusual.

I work at a third-party facility that repairs Lenovo laptops. I have had to change out motherboards often on various ThinkPads and the Lenovo Yoga line (that model is like kicking dead whales down the beach, very sensitive and creates post-repair issues).
My advice? Stick to the older T series models. People have purchased models like the Yoga in March and then in June and July it lands in my hands to have it repaired...I'd be mad to spend $800USD on a device that doesn't even last a year without running into issues.
Here's a fun one, someone forgot their BIOS password. I had to send the unit to be quoted for a new motherboard. How much were they quoted for? $1000USD.

Old electronics ARE basically free, lainon.
Just lurk more and you will find the best deals (if not free).
It's not like you'd have regretbuy and had spent too much if you got some stuff from 5-8 years ago, sometimes they're also free stuff if they had "viruses" some people are dumb and don't even know how to replace cmos batteries.
Old stuff are also tested in time (burned-in) so you know they won't fail on you randomly, just make sure to supply it with electric fields just so it won't corrode or the caps won't just die out (also make sure there's no ground loops so the caps won't die from constant leaks).
New laptops tend to die faster compared to a 2008 toshiba that I had bought in around 6 years ago.
Just make sure NOT to plug in the DC after plugging the AC charger (plug the charger into laptop before plugging to wall socket otherwise you risk of sparks catching in the DC laptop charging port which fries the mobo or damages caps).
New electronics ARE basically DEAD.
It sux since they use worse components like literally plastic and no reinenforced hinges, have no SATA (netbook formfactor usually), and have terribly built-in lithium panel batteries instead of good old 18650's.
Might as well buy a tablet or phone which can play genshin impact or some nu hip games at the same price point and supports more programs - it's not like you can use VM on that sorry ass 2/4GB memory of your x86 chromebook that doesn't even have usable graphics compute, really no.
I'm not looking for middleground or laptops that come in between a desktop and netbook or even stuff like desktop-replacement laptops. Those aren't a good investment as they require more care and usually disposable tech that cannot be maintained. What can't be (maintained) can't last long.

x230 is solid, but for my money the x220 (at least i7 model, which includes usb 3.0) is better. The incremental cpu improvements just aren't enough to account for the switch to the newer keyboard style. Of course, if you have the motivation to perform the keyboard swap, then that point is moot and x230 reigns supreme.
For me though, the goat Thinkpad is the x270
>cpu slightly more up-to-snuff with modern casual use
>ultra-portable x-series form factor
>sd slot, usb 3.0, usb-c, hdmi, and ethernet ports
>last x-series with the battery bridge system; battery life is phenomenal even today
>can be charged via older square-style plug OR usb-c
Picked up an i7 model for $190. Best purchase I've made in years, would recommend.

Had a System76 machine for a few years now. While it's par for the course these days, I don't like how small the tactility is on the trackpad buttons. Even worse is how honking huge and non-recessed the trackpad itself is, making me constantly brush up against it with my palm while typing. I'm had to utilize a syndaemon tool to disable my trackpad while typing to get around this, which kind of works but the annoyance is the lag between when it stops detecting that you're typing and you actually want to use the trackpad again. Or, when I'm doing really serious typing I just get into the habit of using a trackpad on/off toggle shortcut. These are two things I've never had to utilize with previous laptops that also had trackpads, but I'm getting used to the workarounds so it's not as big a deal as I originally thought it was going to be.
The keyboard feels decent compared to a lot of other horrible piece of soykaf keyboards in the laptop world today, and I like that there's a built-in backlight in mine. Unfortunately for something like six months System76 had pushed out a firmware update for my model that made the backlight stop functioning. Took them a while to get it fixed, but my interactions with them during the process were excellent.
My biggest pet peeve is that they don't ship SeaBIOS with their coreboot implementation, meaning you basically have zero options to tweak the hardware at boot time. The only option coreboot by itself presents to you is which device to boot from. This is a bit extra irritating for me, because some day I would like to do absolute full disk encryption, where the bootloader's EFI system partition is encrypted along with everything else on the machine. This is something only possible with coreboot/libreboot and a payload like SeaBIOS that allows you decrypt the bootloader partition at the first stage of the bootloading chain. Some day I'll have to reflash my machine to include a payload when I actually want to set it up this way.
While those are some negatives, there aren't that big in the grand scheme and especially compared to other options on the market. Overall I am pleased with my System76 machine. Although the price for new hardware was pretty steep.

macbook air m1 had saner resolution. 2560x1600 at 13.3 is 3*75dpi which I think was probably intentional whereas lenovo had fhd and hd at 14" which falls under no ideal dpi category (although 75*1.5 but still not usable for fonts).
though you get much better software support and "repair" with lenovos though plus they have that really nice feature that locks the battery charge - still ideal to own one.
>>62547
thinkpads have been overshadowed by soho desktops. since many do remote work/school plus there are cheaper alternatives for used thinkpad. new thinkpads are just bad as there's no guaranteed aftermarket parts unlike older models so you might as well could just buy acer or toshiba alternative which is absolutely way better but in long run lenovo still works better as they've have battery charging cap in bios (so works on linux).

I don't think I've noticed anything worse about chinkpads in the last five years of models I've been handling them, and I handle a lot of different computers.
If anything, by personal experience, the yoga lineup of them is probably my favourite since you can put it in tablet mode as an accessory to a dock which fits nicely on my desk with an ipad hub.
I will agree that >>62581 is right about the soldered usb-c charging being bad. But I've been happy with the thinkpad yoga I got four years ago.
There is room for improvement with them, but I won't hold my breath for an old school keyboard layout on these.
If you want an old school thinkpad keyboard on modern hardware, learn to fabricate and machine parts. Then you can have whatever laptop you like once you have the $5000 worth of equipment to melt and pour it.

I've had it for 3 years, bought it second-hand, and it's perfect, no problems, durable and has already fallen several times (with me on my bike) and no breakages. When I see some of my classmates with their latest 1300-bucks gaming laptops that break at the slightest impact and with no autonomy, it disgusts me. A side note: I keep hearing that old thinkpad keyboards are great, but mine has this problem where when I press two keys in very quick succession, they come out in a random but consistent order. It makes it hard to type quickly (ie. > 100wpm). I replaced my T430 keyboard with a classic layout one and this still happens, so I want to know if this is a thing in everyone's thinkpad

older models are good if you put the work into optimizing your system. If you aren't willing to do that I'd say don't bother. They are fun projects and totally usable if you know what you're doing but 99% of people don't and will just complain because they can't run windows 11 on a 15-20 year old laptop missing the entire point of it to begin with.

quality of stuff changed drastically after 2019 and then there's also the post-pandemic issues, people stressed which could have been major factors on the problem with 2020 devices. I would say stick to Hong Kong or Taiwan stuff.
In particular Thinkpad is China so I can't really recommend them and the keyboards kinda suck these days you're better off getting the LOQ variants also but I'd stick to post or late-2021 devices which is also the time when lockdowns somewhat eased a bit.

I just look for ones with numpad, and then use either microsoft mousekeys or kde mouse navigation. that's the only alternative.

if you care about typing a lot get japanese brands, or ones with japanese keyboard. they're pretty rare but they usually have less key collision/rollover problem.

I bought a newer AMD T14s a few months back and it's an excellent laptop. The battery lasts a long time, the hardware mostly works in Linux, and the magnesium case feels great. Sadly, the trackpoint cursor is not completely reliable in Linux, but given that the model is new and the device will presumably eventually be better supported in future kernels, I can tolerate this minor issue.
The problem is that there are tons of laptops with the ThinkPad branding that are total garbage, which means that the onus is on the consumer to do some research first. In my experience, the website 'notebookcheck' is the best place to go for choosing a modern ThinkPad.
That said, Lenovo is shooting itself in the foot by making so many soykafty laptops and having the consumer make so many choices about the hardware. In particular, having customers have to choose between OLED and IPS displays is a mistake, because most people have no idea that OLED comes at a huge cost to battery life.
tl;dr skill issue; pick your models better

I guess it must be that more compact formfactor (14" or less) would have better quality control since it's harder to actually piece together than a 15"-17" ones.
also the problem with OLED can be simply fixed with making document viewers, browsers with an "always dark" addon use dark or pitchblack modes. that would drastically improve battery life. though I think that the way OLED works on individual brightness is really not great for the battery's health which I've seen happen over phone battery life (where even old, substandard, or aftermarket battery affects the OLED performance so much). I would stick to IPS just for the longevity and replaceability. rather I would actually prefer high quality true 24-bit TFT just for the latency and brightness.

I picked up a ridiculously cheap T14 G1 Intel model a while ago. Feels nice to the touch and runs smoothly, dualbooting winblows and debian.
What's the main difference between U and M type processors? It has an i7-10510U.
Before this I mostly used a corebooted T420s with a 1080p mod and 16GB of ram. to be honest, this t14 feels like an upgrade but only marginal, it mostly feels "new"
Spike Spiegel · 2024-10-20 13:50
I don't think I can even get a thinkpad here.
So I can't really join the trend.

Consumer-grade laptops break so easily nowadays, after mere 1 or 2 years you are expected to have some kind of issue.
Business-class laptops are known for their significantly superior durability and quality, but is it still true for modern business laptops? No idea.
I will be requiring a new laptop in the future, maybe in months or in 1 year or 2 years or even 3 years. Normally I would go for a refurbished business laptop but their hardware doesn't suit me well for being generations behind (I need an iGPU that is at leats nearly as fast as the Iris Xe). I've been considering Slimbook laptops, as they seem to have good quality (better than Tuxedo it seems), they are decently priced, hardware is great, screen color gamut is great and Slimbook even sells spare parts for repair, unlike Tuxedo iirc.

I bought one Lenovo laptop several years ago. Luckily, I was able to return it for a refund. I will never buy another Lenovo product as long as I live. It was the worst piece of crap I ever bought.

It's no excuse for usedfagging. Some thighs are better bought old, for sure, but sometimes I just want to buy new so I can forget about it for 5 years not having to think whether it fuarrrking breaks tomorrow.

I have bought my p50 3 years ago from some german guy who used it a fair bit based on the scratches on the casing. i daily-drive this thing and so far, it has been working flawlessly.
i havent had any really brutal drops, but quite a few that slop laptops would not survive.
the i7-6700HQ it has is fast enough that installing anything (except a browser, but thats not the hardwares fault) on gentoo is never a headache.
the older models respect your freedoms more, sure, but if you need faster silicon its a solid choice

used to use this but upgraded to a Latitude 7300. it's the same size but with a 13.3" screen that mogs the TN trashbag. has a proper charging port along with thunderbolt with 4 lanes if you're into eGPUs. it's made out of magnesium but honestly don't know how durable it actually is if it falls. drawbacks are ghosting screen and no trackpoint. nothing is soldered, no bios whitelist. cooling could be improved but after getting some good thermal paste in there (careful with the heatpipe, it's easy to bend) it doesn't heat past 80c while sustaining 2.7ghz on all cores or 4.2ghz for single core loads.

should've gotten the AMD model (unless you care about thunderbolt)

It's probably the best overall laptop I've dealt with. Just jailbreak it and get a x220 keyboard if you want, but the original one is not bad either. I have one and I'll get a second one when I find a good sale as they are increasingly harder to get in good condition.

Laptops are a weird NICHE really. Laptops these days are designed with planned obsolescence in the form of
>still using Li-ion instead of Li-Polymer
>broken hinges
>soldered components like RAM (on Apple SSD is soldered so it's guaranteed pay for replacement for a worn-down SSD while they refurb/cycle the item back into repair crowd or reselling to broke users or redispensing it)
>keyboards that easily break, no replacement
And the NICHE is even abused since laptops are meant to be efficient, then they sabotage things like its battery life and its replaceability (hello smartphones :-D), and since it's all about efficiency it's not really about getting the i9 or flagship AMD chip, it doesn't matter if your laptop is 4-7 generations behind since there's not really much improvement with efficiency on x86 ISA.
Only the IBM Thinkpads and post-IBM Early Lenovo ones are good since they were targeting w/ Businesses in mind to the point there's even still market for Thinkpads for its repairability today and badged with stickers from refurbishers.
Since Laptops are just stuff you need working where you go it requires one quality that is reliability and laptops these days aren't made with that in mind - rather they sell unreliability and liability so you need to get it guaranteed repair fee of $1000 to get your data back (or sell you cloud subs) and/or so you can continue working (laptop is a "working man" kind of stuff).
Getting a new laptop you're riddled with uncertainties, what if the bios is buggy? What if it has a massive hardware issue? Used ones are king here since they're tried and tested and still has RAM/SATA bay (some even having WLAN and 2x mpcie slots, with SATA and even NVME/M2), along with aftermarket parts like china imitation keyboards of thinkpads. They're cutting down on all these features to simplify production however they suck since that built-in flatrectangle Li-ion battery will cyberhump in a year's time (and possibly just cyberhump'd 200 charge cycles with 20% wear level which is completely dying battery). So for sure they made it so batteries are harder to replace... so you buy a new model! It's a scam trying to scam niche.
Although if you're looking for convenience well Chromebooks with linux is a good and cheaper choice however that's not gonna cut it with that 4/8GB memory and also worse that chrome is getting separated from Google as per DOJ order then there's no more alternative for laptops. I think the laptop market needs to GROW UP since this scamming of niche needs is super abusive. I would even prefer to just buy a 5G Tablet at this point, possibly better waterproofing and "external cooling", no moving failing parts like fan and no vents to suck moisture in, no failing/wearing SSD, no failing keyboard flex nor weak hinges, uses Li-Polymer, better performance (can game since PC market game AAA titles is ass versus AAA titles in mobile market which isn't demanding or is efficient), (tablets are somewhat) drop resistant, actually. So in reality it's the Laptop market that is dead (Long live laptop market! (if revised or rectified by the niche abusers which is all of them)). Tablets replace laptops and has many more functions, better screen colors/specs for "budget" market (there's even 90Hz tablets), much more repairable (vs phones, the batteries are easy to work with), 16GB RAM for half the price of a "new laptop" with celeron N4020 at 8GB memory. It doesn't compete or rather the roads have long diverged with tablets even surpassing laptops at this point. Not even the niche as hell Ultra Portable Handheld Gaming PC can compete anymore. It got to the point that there's the same productivity degree with both platforms while for stuff like programming you can just get a toaster PC, so the combo these days is cheap toaster with Xeon 16+thread/core refurbish off Ali and a entry-level Tablet that is good enough versus a modern-day laptop still with li-ion battery (lol bloa-ted pillow batteries) that can't even do widevine or struggles to stream off of youtube... even phones support AV1 hardware decoding/encoding, whereas you need the NVIDIA/AMD totl flagship cards to do so...

>why not just save a few bucks (in terms of hardware) and go for a tablet/keyboard combo.
Because if I want a device for myself, I want it to run at least linux, better if bsd too. If I want a device to do corporate clown society bullshit it has to be windows anyway. All mobile OSes are fuarrrking scam. There are no good mobile OSes. Graphene only runs on fuarrrking pixels and as far as I hear about it can't even perform the normalnigger mobile functions like running th3 banking malware applications etc. Call me when your touch devices get something decent and useful beyond brewing soykaf.

>i'm not talking about you or even the average lainanon; all what was being said was that from a cost perspective, tablets are surpassing lower-end modern laptops while laptop manufacturers are scamming people with low quality soykaf.
I don't think anyone here provided any comprehensive comparisons that would back this statement up. Show me on specific examples how tablets surpass a laptops the way you describe it. To me both look equally scammy. A tablet with a display port, usb, jack and decent spec? To end up running android and never using the spec? Stop talking out your ass. Show me.
