Returning to Technology
The Fin · 2022-08-01 13:36
I've been completely out of the loop for almost 5 years, what's changed for Linux and the tech world I should know about? I heard Wayland has finally improved, but aside from that, I don't know anything new.
This could be something troublesome, improved/new software, new security/privacy measures to take outside a good VPN and avoiding Google/Facebook, etc.
I've missed you fuarrrkers.

SystemD was fuarrkes into all major distros so a fork of Debian called "Devuan" that omits it was establisbed; if you are used to Debian I recommend Devuan (and derivatives).
Besides that not much. Android Open Source now takes ~250+GB to mirror completely and another idk, 250-400GB to build, :^D
Some more interesting things probably happened, idk I'm only sparsely looped-in atm. Oh, there's been a soft-disclosure of something "technological" via anime called "Ajin".

8ch was kill and the new site is a honeypot that glows in the dark. Terry Davis (of TempleOS fame) died. Void Linux project leader disappeared but came back (and left again...), some internal drama. Artix Linux is a version of Arch that doesn't have systemd. Pipewire might replace Pulseaudio in the future. CentOS was kill. Poettering no longer works at Red Hat (he works at M$ now). Emacs has now (optionally) JIT compiled elisp code. Check out the news thread >>>/sec/6861 for more.

I had heard a bit about Devuan, I might have to start using that. I've always used Debian so it looks like what I need.
>>62271
>8ch
I noticed 8ch died, and I was disappointed to see I can't even create my own board on the honey pot and all the posts make no sense, like they were made by a bot that doesn't understand language.
>Terry Davis
I followed Terry religiously since 2015 and heard he died when the news broke, I still miss him.
>fuarrrking Poettering
Poettering going to work for MS isn't a surprise, I always guessed he'd leave for Google, but at this point what's the difference.
>Emacs
Not surprised to hear Emacs has continued to add crazy features, it's basically been it's own OS for years with how much crazy soykaf it can do.
Well, I'm glad not too much has changed. Now I just need to relearn what I've forgotten and I'll be back on track in no time.

Most of 8ch moved to the webring. /v/ is on zzzchan and /k/ is on anon.cafe for example. You can get the addressed from: https://github.com/ccd0/imageboards.json

Madaidan exposed the truth about Linux and Firefox (in)security and has shown everyone the light. Privacy communities are now trusting proprietary software and big tech companies like Google.
https://madaidans-insecurities.github.io/linux.html
https://madaidans-insecurities.github.io/firefox-chromium.html
Neocities became a popular hosting service to spread misinformation regarding privacy and security (mostly web browsers) for a while.
https://donottrust.neocities.org/posts/false-info/
If I were you I'd switch back to Windows or use ChromeOS since both are far more secure than Linux and you don't seem to be the kind of person with the knowledge, competence, and devotion required to harden and maintain a Linux distro. If you cannot switch to a proprietary operating system, Fedora Silverblue might be a decent alternative once you harden it.
https://silverblue.fedoraproject.org/
I recommend reading PrivacyGuides to get caught up on privacy and security and Distrowatch if you want to keep up with Linux distros.

spyware.neocities.org and digdeeper.neocities.org are right, though.

Nice troll...

That knowledge can be easily obtained:

NixOS and Guix System are better.

Microkike is dumping windows 10. Windows 11 in my honest opinion isn't as bad from having to use it, but generations of hardware are heading to obsolescence from this, so major software developers are going to follow suit. And this will eventually trickle in to Open Source OSes from Firefucks or Chrome.
They also retired Internet Explorer but MSHTML vulns are still there so it doesn't really do anything. But as long as you aren't retarded you don't see these issues.
>open source
Palemoon is working on being worse than the Mozilla Foundation, and Toby left after fur user drama.
Void is from some of the drama recently on the decline, still the best desktop Linux if you don't want to run bloat from Debian Maintainers.
Debian lost one of their big KDE maintainers a few months ago.
>apple
Almost completely moved over to the m1s, probably eying expansion to for the AR/VR space. Biggest competitor will probably be facebook. Haven't used ar/vr ever, but I wonder who is going to come out on top of it. Since that looks like the next social platform of choice.
>internet
All anonymous platforms are ghettoized. Political ones are spammed and targeted with attacks constantly. A lot of people moved to tg or discord chats. Either you were in the bunkers or went back to 4chan as is tradition.
Twitter was rattled but nothing really changed. Everything mainstream requires a phone number, thumb print, and picture of your penis. You can't say half of what you used to be able to five years ago on 4chan or in private chats, and the places you can say anything you would like is like shouting in to a tin can.
The good news is that Urbit and the Fediverse are also gaining speed from 0.2 kph to 0.5 kph But are nowhere near usable.

That's BS.
Perhaps you trust them but no one else does.

It takes more than just knowledge to maintain and harden a system. It takes continuous hard work and dedication. Also, Guix isn't better than Fedora Silverblue. Most of it's packages aren't up-to-date and It uses Linux-libre which is notorious for removing kernel security mitigations and suppressing kernel warnings about vulnerable microcode.

Not a surprise to be honest, quite a few saw this coming.
>Apple moving completely to M1 chips
Bold move, but I don't see their venture into VR standing up to the big boys.
>All anonymous platforms are ghettoized
This is what I was afraid of. I simply can't find any good small communities outside this place, and even then we must be respectful which I've always had difficulty doing because I'm a massive dick.
>Everything mainstream requires a phone number, thumb print, and picture of your penis.
Lmao, this is like kicking dead whales down the beach.
>The good news is that Urbit and the Fediverse are also gaining speed
I haven't heard of these, but I'm interested.

lol, what nonsense. If anything the project is improving, after they finally expelled one of the biggest assholes on the project.

no it isnt. Pale Moon is getting worse and worse and now it's an unusable piece of soykaf. If Firefox is a security nightmare, Pale Moon is security ==HELL!==

your post sounds like typical activist caring about feels posturing instead of project quality because thats the scope of ability. Absolute red flag for project quality once these types get control.
>>62281
>win11 not bad
they want complete control over your system, the goal backed by tpm chip is to regulate what software you can install with keys hidden in hardware. Everything needs to be signed by ms or you cant use it. Game over for open source. Praise the monopoly walled garden.
On top of that they do "default hard drive encryption for security" but its more likely to simply hinder you accessing data externally so you cant easily look into the system and find more issues with it / jailbreak as easily.

Had to use win11 for a new tablet/laptop my parents got and I gotta say.....wtf microshit is doing? its soykaf for desktop and soykaf for touchscreen, all the configs are buried 2-3 menus that do nothing, and it burns thru ram like never before
But the biggest problem: only 5 years support and then you'll have to pay for win12
These fuarrrkers have done such a great job sabotaging FOSS from the inside that they can now go back to making pure soykaf like in the late 90s since theres no real competition
>Debian lost one of their big KDE maintainers a few months ago.
What happened?
>probably eying expansion to for the AR/VR space
Rumors just like the car and seeing how meta has been burning money in oculus with little results I doubt apple which only cares about profits will go down that path, meta had more of a reason since VR/AR is the new frontier of social media soykaf and datamining, and fb's stopped growing
As for apple they are going long on services and content because they have every single one of their users by the balls with their walled garden soykaf, you literally cant switch anymore without losing a chunk of your soykaf because icloud wont let you export everything
>A lot of people moved to tg or discord chats
Discord its botnet as hell, avoid at all costs

It amazes me that the top of the market for two decades, with thousands of specialist full-time paid employees working on the OS still fails to get basic things right.
