I like the idea of the fediverse but I don't really participate much on social media. I'm thinking of joining a mastadon instance for soykaf posting. What are your thoughts on the Fediverse, Lainons? Is there a Lain/arisu Mastadon instance out there?

My primary interest is in Peertube, the best video hosting alternative to Youtube I've encountered in a long time.

The few times I tried, Mastodon and pleroma discourse tends to be inane reaction posting.
I wanted them to be fun and compelling but all i felt was the vacuum left by the creators who were on twitter and not the fediverse

I can never find out what people are writing about my website on the Fediverse. I see them in the HTTP referrers, but I've never found out how to actually search even one instance properly and find the discussions therein.

What kind of website and how is it part of the fediverse?

It's my personal website and occasionally I notice long chains of Fediverse referrers accessing a particular resource from it, but when I try to search on one of these Fediverse websites for such I find nothing relevant.

Ask their hostmaster, if those discussions are intended to be public they'll be glad to show you how to find them.

i never bothered with the mastodon side of things because i simply don't care about it, but i did get involved by hacking on a federated imageboard project and a project of my own related to it
it has good ideas. i don't like activitypub, the protocol most of it runs over but it's also the standard so i have to put up with it. it can be a huge garbage fire when it wants to be
most of my hated for it comes from json-ld which is just awful to parse without resorting to external libraries so i've resorted to a half-baked handwritten implementation that was tested on what it expects and not necessarily what it'll receive

I think the fediverse has more in common with IRC than twitter. You get to know some people, have chats with them, but you don't see very many people sharing their work.
Also more people are a nonny moose on the fediverse.
Honestly this is the main reason I think it is bad at what it does... as a chat platform it kinda is like kicking dead whales down the beach, but that's what people use it for.
