I rather dislike KDE, but I'm too new to Linux to know exactly what I want. All I know is that it needs to be lightweight and simple. I really want something like a pegboard, where I can pin and resize windows at set intervals and be able to do it on a keyboard.

SHODAN · 2022-07-18 23:09
>>61881
I don't use tiling window managers but you can choose dwm for a minimal window manager that you patch features on to (if you're one of those anti bloat people). There's also sowm which follows the same philosophy but as a floating window manager.
If you want a fully featured tiling window manager then your options are i3 or XMonad, if you don't know Haskell you probably want to opt for i3 since XMonad is configured in haskell (though it is becoming the more popular option nowadays I believe).

>tiling WM
I wouldn't stat with DWM. I really dislike the overly """suckless"""/minimalist philosophy DWM has. Maintaining patches that are scattered around is stupid and I'm worried about the quality patches. For example, a popular YouTuber called "luke smith" is maintaining a fork of DWM but, IIRC, he even doesn't know much C (as far as I know. he just knows git and how to apply a patch). With a language like C, you really want a programmer/maintainer who knows the language (and X11 is a huge mess). Other WMs are better because of this, since you are only copying someone's config file.
I recommend AwesomeWM and Ratpoison (or StumpWM if you are CL fan). If you want Wayland, use Sway (a clone of i3-gaps for Wayland). Bspwm and Xmonad are popular, too. I recommend you try all these WMs. I liked Ratpoison because it's simple but nowadays I prefer a stacking WM with multiple desktops/workspaces.

Sure. You only need xf86-video-vesa (or whatever), xf86-input-libinput, xwayland and the wayland compositor of your choice.
>Are i3's config files compatible with Sway so if I ever wanted to grab some config I could do so? The documentation seemed to strongly imply this.
Almost, but you probably need to adapt the config. Sway has sway --validate option for checking the config.
>>61963
>but I just don't know how to properly install software outside a package manager yet.
Generally, you should avoid doing that. Instead it's better to find a package or a 3rd-party repo/flatpak. I would even consider switching the distro if there was a package I needed but that wasn't packaged for my distro.

Without getting too far into religious issues, I use sam as my text editor over acme. It's simple. I run commands in a shell window like a normal person. Sam is a text editor, whereas acme is an alternative user interface and mail client that some people use as their text editor, where every program requires some sort of special hand-holding. However, on a UNIX system, it's really useful, since there's no other way to get a good text-based user interface.

>unless I'm able to exclusively install Gentoo, it's either Gentoo or nothing,
Why don't you install Gentoo? You could practice installing Gentoo using VirtualBox. If you need help while installing Gentoo, you can even access #gentoo @ Libera IRC channel (using irssi) while you are installing Gentoo using the LiveCD (aka installation iso). More info on IRC: >>63625
If you want to dual-boot Linux and Windoze, you should first use Windows disk management tools to shrink a partition (reserve at least ~20-30GB for Linux).
>what's like to use non-Gentoo linux?, is it cool?
Yes. Gentoo is the best and most flexible Linux distro but using some other distro is much better than using Windoze. Just try Gentoo or Debian/Devuan or Arch/Artix.
>>63919
>I thought about installing gentoo but I couldn't find a 32bit version of it(or maybe i was just being stupid).
Go to https://www.gentoo.org/downloads/ and scroll down to "Advanced choices and other architectures" and select X86 tab. Download the minimal installation iso and then follow the Handbook: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:X86 When you download stage3 (it's explained in the Gentoo Handbook), you need to download the i686 OpenRC version of Stage3 tarball (optionally, you can also use the hardened version).
But if you have low-end laptop, I recommend you install Arch Linux or Artix Linux instead as building packages takes a long time on a low-end laptop (but you can try it and see if the build times aren't too long in your opinion).

The basics:
>Get a wallpaper from https://konachan.com/ (use the Xfce4 settings or feh/nitrogen/swaybg to set it)
>Use your package manager to find a GTK theme and an icon theme. I like https://github.com/grassmunk/Chicago95 (but if you are new, it's best to pick a theme that's packaged in your distro's official repos!)
>Use lxappearance (or Xfce4 settings => Appearance) to change the GTK theme and Icon theme. Perhaps change the fonts, too... (again use the package manger to find new fonts. I like Hack (monospace) and Noto fonts.)
>Optionally use conky
>Open terminal, use neofetch or pfetch and take a screen shot using scrot (or something). Clear the meta-data using Exiftool.
You can also install another WM (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Window_manager) if you want. I recommend you install i3/Sway, IceWM or OpenBox. If you want a bar for OpenBox, I recommend Tint2. And use other people's dotfiles as inspiration or starting point: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dotfiles

Waybar? That looks pretty nice. Muted colors and padding in the bar are relaxing to loook at. Are you using a display manager or just starting from TTY?
Chani · 2022-11-23 03:31
>>65343
Yeah, waybar with pretty basic config.
To start sway i just use something like this in my shell config (i use fish btw)
if status is-interactive
if [ "$(tty)" = "/dev/tty1" ]; then
exec sway
end
end

these are my two virtual workspaces, with a bunch of different types of windows open. i cycle through them with the scroll wheel or ctrl+alt+h . notice how the panel resizes as more windows are added? icons are from haikuOS, 9front cursor.

Looks solid! If I wasn't looking too hard at the icon and the settings window wasn't there, could have fooled me.
Sabo Engle · 2022-12-21 20:38
Tiling window managers are soulless and so is any attempt at making your system look like some defunct old OS that is no longer developed.
After any amount of ricing Linux becomes a Frankenstein monster and only building off the default environment of a popular desktop distribution is usable in the long term.
It's so bad that I'm on the verge of going full Terry Davis and making my own OS.

Kinda basic but I like having monochrome rice(?), the wallpaper made by MidJourney I just add a filter to make it pixelated and black and white, I had done it with a camera filter program but do not remember to be honest.

I was referring to both. I have now got me to make somewhat. I made an XFCE and AwesomeWM "rice" and setup a invidious instance. But I used to do much more tinkering :( I have Cinnamon XFCE4 and AwesomeWM on the same machine and user, they surprisingly don't interfer with each other
