Where can I publish my website ?
Para · 2022-06-29 18:55
Title says it all. Where could I publish my first website. I've been looking into neocities and it seems to be a good solution for now. But is there any other good hosting solutions.
Keep in mind all I want is something where I can publish a static website in HTML/CSS.
Thanks in advance !
Debbie Charteris · 2022-06-29 19:02
just google freeweb hosting. Neocities are good for static pages, however if you wanna get creative do https://www.000webhost.com/ and combine it with a free domain name. https://www.namecheap.com/domains/freedns/ for the experience plus
If your just playing around building sites I wouldn't put any money into it.

Thanks for the reply, I'll look into it, but thanks for the suggestion.

Nobody has mentioned the The Super Dimension Fortress?? Are you guys even real computer nerds?
OP, go here. http://sdf.org/
The SDF has everything you could possibly need and are run by old graybeard wizards, not corp. A basic account can do what you want and costs literally $1. I anonymously mailed them a single dollar bill like 9 years ago and have been using my SDF account ever since.

Wait, so is it free or does it cost $1 ?
The money is not the problem obviously, but the problem might be sending the money (for someone like myself).
> I anonymously mailed them a single dollar bill
And that is their preferred method of payment, or just your own initiative?
What is the regular way to pay?
I don't get it...

After creating an account just log in with SSH and type "validate". It will display the different ways to make the payment and their procedures.
PayPal and cryptocurrencies are the other alternatives.

Thanks, I've checked them out and they seem to be an awesome option and they seem to be perfect.
Thanks a lot for the suggestion!

You could also try any of the tildes, just takes a couple days to get approved. Similarly allows access to a shared Linux box with webhosting enabled, but they're completely free.
tilde.town tidle.club and tidle.team are the big ones last I checked. I think a lainon also operates a tilde but I don't remember the url.
Confusion · 2022-07-24 23:33
I use codeberg.page because they have a really good privacy policy and double as git so it's practically phased out github, IIRC the policy for pages is a little cyberhumped but it should be good enough and I'm far too lazy to migrate.
Hagbard Celine · 2022-07-27 16:41
Digitalocean.
You can publish 3 static sites for free.
Ivan Horvat · 2022-07-27 17:29
It should be obvious.
Hosting is NOT free.
You must pay to host. You must provide all of your personal information and pay a fee for your domain name and a VPS.

a lot of pubnixes/tildes allow you to publish for free with only an email. Some encourage use of tor to prevent personal info leakage via the finger command. neocities and other such static hosts also don't require personal info beyond an email address.

>neocities
>recaptcha required to register
>blocks emails from non-mainstream providers
>blocks registration through Tor, VPNs, and proxies

I registered with neocities from tor with a non-mainstream email address with no issue.
>recaptcha
So what?

Presumably because google owns it. Also people say they have been using it for years to collect free research data from users to apply in their AI department. That'd be my guess.

>You must provide all of your personal information and pay a fee for your domain name and a VPS.
There is a big difference between having to provide full name, address and credit card number and having to give an email and solve a captcha.
Stop trying to conflate both.

Is there any opensource or at least free service for blog like neocities but doesn't require any skills with css/html/js?
I want to use a blog only for blogging. I don't care about ricing my home page. I'd used Google blogger almost 4 years ago. But currently, I'm totally get rid of Google services.
How about wordpress? but It's paid service if I don't host it with domain. However, I don't want to get a domain even I give my information for it -- also, I don't prefer at cryptocurrencies. Which one will be fit with me? bearblog can be a great choice? but I'm not sure it allows using other languages though.

You could host it on your own computer.
1. You would need some type of website hosting software on your computer, something like XAMPP or nginx. (These are well coded free systems you can use for hosting your website)
2. You would need to access your router and port forward connecting traffic to your personal computer. (Minecraft tutorial for hosting a minecraft server could teach you this)
How to be sure you are hosting correctly:
1. You can test to see if your hosting software is working by typing "localhost" into your web browser (brave, google chrome, safari, firefox, brave, opera, brave), and seeing if your webpage loads up.
2. You can test to see if your hosting software AND port forwarding is working by typing in your IP address and seeing if your webpage loads up.

Some people don't want to support google AT ALL, in any capacity.
sage · 2022-08-01 20:28
Host it yourself
Also use IPv6, since most routers don't support static IPv4 address because they're behind 200 layers of NAT

I host some dumb interactive javashit on neocities, one of my websites on an OpenBSD vps, and host a few pages for other people on a FreeBSD vps. Shithub/Shitlab pages also work. When you're ready just rent a VPS and register a domain name. It's much less painful this way.
Otacon · 2022-09-05 17:19
I host my website on a spare thinkpad with nginx, however, you still have to pay for your domain and use third party DNS to get it out there. (like NameCheap or something)
>NOTE:
This probably isn't the most secure way to do it
It's not entirely free
You kind-of-ish need to know what you're doing

surge.sh isn't bad
publish from your terminal

Addressing your public IP like this doesn't work on some routers. Easiest to ping through tor, or try canyouseeme.org.

Hello fellow lainons.
I'm hijacking this bread. I need to think of a name for my blog / portfolio website. My name is weird and all the name.TLDs are mostly taken. My last name is really long. Right now I was thinking about going with something that was an amalgamation of a tech term + another word, but it feels kinda low-effort to me and seems kinda weird.
Does anyone have any advice for naming their website?
Also, is using s3 for hosting a static website bad? It's practically free and I don't want my git repo to be public.

Shortened version of last name/first+last name maybe? If the blogging will be important, what's a unique idea or approach you have? Name it in a way that suggests what makes it unique/ worth visiting.

you can just use "github pages" to make a portfolio site, e.g. https://chandrikadeb7.github.io/

You can generate sites from markdown using gatsby

What features come with? Like how much storage, bandwidth, etc...
Hacker · 2022-10-26 10:55
neocities is cool but for more robust websites i would get a small and cheap vps and read up on basic sysadmin stuff to secure the server
Cowboy · 2022-10-26 11:14

better to use codeberg.page, instead of Microsoft servers

This is an option but note your website address will just be your IP address (obviously) and also most ISP will block outbound HTTP/S traffic. I circumvented this by making the server use a different port.
This brings me to something else, I've not yet heard of any alternative DNS servers. Surely there'd be some?

"Public" status means you can register a subdomain right away, "private" status means you have to get the approval of the person leasing the domain to the project

Deploy it at cloudflare pages, it's free and good. Just frontend, tho.

well, first you will see a page where you can select a language. after you selected a language you will see a bunch of information about how cloudflare operates and why it's bad.

A sparsely mentioned one is CodeHS:
https://help.codehs.com/en/articles/368238-creating-your-personal-homepage-on-codehs
It's pretty soykaf. Especially cause I'm pretty sure it's just a webpage, not even a website. But hey, it's free.
