Hi! Hopefully someone might relate Basically I've been happily using openSUSE for a few months now, but a few days ago an update came that obliterated my ability to connect to the internet at ALL. The wifi adapter in question is perfectly functional, so I'm assuming it has to do with firmware being removed, but I'm not sure. The wifi adapter ceased to work on Unstable Debian and Arch distros. What do I do and is there someone in the same boat as me? The device in question is RTL8188EU. Thanks lainons!

Try rfkill list and then rfkill unblock the wifi adapter. >>61274 Use the tech questions thread next time >>60792

AUR seems to have this package: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/8188eu-dkms It seems that a similar package is available for OpenSUSE, too: https://software.opensuse.org/package/rtl8188eu They probably split the firmware to a separate package. >>61276 No worries, just remember the next time.

>>61277 A comment from the AUR page: >"Linux 5.15 kernel has Realtek RTL8118EU WiFi driver support natively - it should be safe to uninstall the 8188eu-dkms package" It probably got removed recently. Try reinstalling the driver.

>>61274 If the adapter doesn't show up in `ifconfig -a` then it is a driver issue. If the adapter shows up in `ifconfig -a` but you get an error when you try to use it (e.g. `ifconfig wlanXXX up`) then it's a firmware issue. The command `dmesg` will give you more information like what firmware file the kernel is looking for.

>>61291 I figured it out, like >>61277 said, it was a driver issue, they have probably removed it from the kernel, but that begs the question why

>>61292 it's probably that your device isn't exactly RTL8188EU or has the same ID but won't work unless you had the dkms patch. Happened with my mt7601 (?), it was allegedly merged in kernel 4.x but then it still didn't work and I was using the dkms and waited like until kernel 5.x until it worked natively.
