Surface web search engines that are not actually censored
Six · 2022-06-25 18:12
So far I have only found giga last and private.sh, could someone recommend an actually private search engine with untampered results? Not any trash like duck go or other stuff in "top 10s", those are all tampered.
Ivan Petrov · 2022-06-25 18:52
I personally use the Brave search engine. What do you think of that, OP?
Marly Krushkhova · 2022-06-25 19:07
First be aware of censorship happening on lower levels which makes decensoring your search engine not sufficient to get an unfiltered net.
1. dns level blocks for websites ( eu does it too, its not just china)
2. websites censoring your access based on geoip -news outlets hide bad news from their own citizen while creating the appearance towards outside to have free press -again happening in "free democratic" countries like swedistan
So what can you do?
learn from your gov and use another country to bypass your local laws. They use it to spy on their citizen, you can use it to spy on what they hide from you. This means in practical application run vpn to hide geoip and use arab/chinese/russian search engines because they dont filter for western sensibilities. (They do filter for their own interests of course but thats not an issue as your own western engine wont filter out their bad news if you looking for that kind of content)
tldr: the hostile nations of your gov are your best helpers.

Personally I use Searx, it's not a search engine but a metasearch engine (Fetches results from other search engines, so the results might be still tampered), Apart from Searx and SearXNG there aren't private search engines that I know

I don't often use search engines, and it's not generally useful, but Marginalia is nice for what it does:

theirs YaCy which is a p2p search engine you run locally, i haven't used it that much but its pretty customizable the con is that its written in java, also the people working on it are in the process of rewriting the whole codebase since its quite old, you can look on the github.

this is what i do especially with torrenting, never use gogle for that your're much better learning actual russian or using some kind of translator then using google since it only brings up fake ai generated sites.

Searx would be good but it lacks some pretty needed features.

there's also xapian, which is pretty fine too. The good thing about yacy is that its prepackaged with a crawler and all, but this doesn't add much.
The trouble always with running local search engines is that the internet is so ridiculously big. My local engine has well over 10 million entries and has barely scrapped the surface. Most opensource engines, xapian and yacy (which at least used to be apache solr) are much better set up for searching i.e. a database of material of consistent quality. Even trying to cover a narrow interest area there are many millions of potentially relevant sources, blogs, university pages, news articles...and its very difficult to use a crawler to well discern wheat from chaff.
Xapian has a lot of cool features however with functions that can let you setup i.e. pagerank or things like it. I haven't looked in a bit but I'm not sure anyone has a great publicly avaliable implementation of such a thing however.
Searx is of course, not actually a search engine even if its locally run.

you don't need to learn their language, as long as you know the search engine url you can still use english search queries and it will return english results unfiltered. Sites like yandex offer autotranslate into their own language but its not on by default from my experience so not an issue.

i feel like search engines are kinda like antiviruses aka they're not too many opensource solutions and the ones that exist aren't the greatest.
Yuki Nagato · 2022-06-26 10:17
You should keep in mind not all search engines will remove same things. Like Mojeek, Qwant, Gibiru, and Swisscows will all cover different things purely from timing and limitations on people running it. Swisscows openly says it's family friendly so it's already open on what it does censor so that means them trying to remove porn I think may result in other kinds of sites slipping through at least before reported manually. I know that's a weird way to look at it but small search engines lack resources to censor on scale Google and Bing can. There used to be one called Unbubble which claimed it gave unbiased search order but it seems to have shut down. Im not clear on if Gibiru is a search engine or metasearch though. Qwant does it's own searches but also ads Bing search to it. I also came across one called EncryptedSearch. Not sure if that's a search or a metasearch.

Wouldn't the solution to local run search engines having a low coverage is for them to share results among eachother and take results from big search engines which eventually would lead to results that cant be found anywhere else?

I should ad before i forget encryptedsearchh felt suspicious to me in just how it's named and i barely can find references to it anywhere.

I mean yea but someone has to implement it first.

thats the problem with things like this it for some reason takes a lot of time for an actual good alternative to come out its like people are stuck using the same soykaf that was like created 20 years ago and then because of that the situation dosen't improve.

Previous anon here, i found Searx to be more accurate if you're searching for a very specific thing while things like duckduckgo are good if you're searching for something abstract.
Jean Dupont · 2022-06-28 15:04
>>61266
also theirs a thing called google dorking basically messing with the api and doing advanced searches usefull for finding specific file types on a list of servers, also usefull for building a password dictionary, searx kinda does this automatically, in a kinda pseudo way.
OK So Basically:
>can be used for finding obscure no-domain ip-only sites or sites hosting a specific file/file type.

unfortunatly DDG became unusable the time they announced that they will downrank/block russian content (censorship) and unusable one more time when they admitted to share userdata with microsoft.

Use searx, there are dozens of instances. They are your only option aside startpage. Startpage is pretty soykaf. I think startpage has a JS requirement, it doesn't function with my browser.

Is this thread filled with bots? None of you answered OP's question. You just regurgitate same /g/tard meme search proxies known for past 4 years. Duckduckgo = Bind proxy, Satrtpage = Google proxy, Searx = metasearch proxy for Bing, Yandex and Google. Wow, nice USA tier diversity you got there.

I don't think it exists. When i search for soykaf i use multiple sites like yandex bing and brave search when it's something obscure

Works fine for me on Tor Browser, Javascript disabled.

so far there's only yandex that I know of and use which shows the same quality of results as search engines back in 2016 but too bad they're endangered of bankruptcy.
most search engines had been crippled recently that even Snowden noticed and tweeted about it.
DDG's image search on certain keywords remain the same except most and pic rel. the "All" text results are and will always be trash unlike what it used to. maybe some sneaky employee sabotaged them or whatever, word of advice to check your SJW sabotage human resources duckduckgo (and other similar companies).
try searching "4chan archive" you won't even get a good result but I remember DDG used to show all the archive sites. I guess these SJWs that got into their company just hate imageboards. even if you search lainchan right now it won't appear or show the direct link (and also other imageboards).
pic related, I used to search famous quotes and would get same result quality as yandex on ddg but now it's all complete trash on ddg. this image was made very recently and I bet it would show the same garbage quality result if you used the same keyword.
few months ago you couldn't even search "bromite browser" download link, it only spits out result from uptodown.com and other non-official download sites and not even show the github page! (I also madefeedback about it maybe that's why it now shows the official github link BUT it wasn't like this many years ago).
and yet it still doesn't show the bromite.org domain.
even if you search "bromite browser official website" nah it won't because they're ret*rds and crippled their own engine for censorship compliance, and for some reason they're also hiding open source stuff. kinda sus. now try searching "bromite browser" on yandex, first result is the official dot Org website.

we can only hope if elon or similar will make a saner and more neutral search engine.
soykaf's fuarrrked. I'm guessing it's either other people's AI deciding the things now including the tailored sabotage of all search engines and tech companies.
death is also a form of censorship, if their AI can do it, they will do it and "death by AI" will be a common achievement in future but humanity is getting crippled day by day that I can't even download bromite browser anymore due to fuarrrking soykafty search results from this "partially open source" hypocrite search engine (either AI fault or their employees manipulated or covert ops). even the irony of bromite browser having ddg in their search engines is very funny.

Literally scroll back, not all of us are suggesting the same 4-5 "normal person" search engines, also its literally impossible to not use atleast one of those atleast once, theirs literallly only so many search engines available now days and becuase everyone depended on them and still depends on them, theirs no actual good alternatives, because they got a monopoly or atleast what looks like a monopoly, and people are too scared to build an alternative because they think, they're gonnna be crushed by big brother the moment they attempt to create one. .

Found out it was going to go to soykaf the moment i looked at the ip, and seen that the servers were located in israel, you can't tell me the jews don't atleast have 1/4 th of a hand in this.

an detail to consider is
a b
b a
wont give same search result
its obvious for a person "cable network" "network cable" are different things but you often dont consider this with other terms like "browser name" "name browser" , secondary bromite is a real chemical compound so i would bet the 2m hits are due "bromite browser" looking for bromite hits and getting all sites talking about the chemical

It's cloudflared so that makes it an unusable piece of soykaf. Otherwise it would have been the best search engine along with Wiby and SearXNG.

Yes, and the engine's dev is kind of mad about CF. Engines like Marginalia get hit by SEO spam (probably robots trying to manipulate search suggestions, unaware that suggestions aren't influenced by their searches). There aren't many better options to respond, especially when the engine is a spare-time project that runs on a modest machine in the creator's home.
