What does lain use for 2FA?
Molly Millions · 2022-06-16 01:21
My laptop has a Broadcom wifi card and it doesn't seem to work very well with Linux. What should I replace it with?
fsociety · 2022-06-16 01:52
>>60794
Well, I don't have a phone, so no SMS 2FA for me... I have used email as an option, I've considered the concept of using an authentication application. Yubikeys are pretty cool, though.
>>60796
Broadcom works fine with Linux, it's probably just a crappy card. I've used a lot of different cards and they work mostly fine. Most of them go into monitor-mode, too.
I got an Alfa (AR9271), TP-Link TL-WN722N (RTL8188), EASTECH (RT5370), Some soykafty chinkware raspberry pi WiFi adapter (RTL8811CU)
It all worked fine with Linux.
Hong, Guil Dong · 2022-06-16 14:21
>>60796
it's probably disabled for your safety due to broadpwn's theoretical privilege escalation.
i recommend realtek 8xxx series although i would recommend a usb wifi more than a wifi card since cards suck and require antenna.
some cards can have up to 3x u.fl antenna connectors and some laptops only house 1x or 2x u.fl antenna on them while cards do constantly sap power unless the pcie slot was competely turned off (it also is not hotplug either) and can be a security issue too (broadpwn dma + smm). booting up with a card also can accidentally leak and broadcast your original MAC address during bios boot and as we all know all devices with the cough notification are eating wifi broadcast beacons 24/7 "for medical purposes" or is it.
probably nicer if you had dual intel card but for that price you can just buy a usb wifi6 with wpa3 support.
>>60799
some newer broadcoms do work but older ones aren't on the kernel or you require an older one or manual installation of the driver.
Agent Richard Gill · 2022-06-16 16:08
>>60794
I haven't needed to use 2FA in years but I have a script that parses qr info from zbar and gives it to pass. Won't help if you want to use your phone, though.
Pris · 2022-06-16 17:07
Any lain can recommend a small hidden camera, ~3cm or less, that just streams http video over wifi and doesn't need some soykafty proprietary phone app to view from the chinese cloud like all the ones on ebay. I'm willing to go the DIY route if not.
Nemissa · 2022-06-17 03:52
>>60820
haven't tried those but chinese android/smart cameras over e27 are probably cheaper but if you're good at android stuff you can probably hax it to some degree of control.
other than that just get a nano SBC, flash openwrt and take out a camera from a laptop, those cameras are usually just a 4-pin usb device you can either rewire as usb although you will need batteries,
other recommendation is a small phone with Haven app so you have a battery.
there are hidden cameras sold around ali but they only save to sd card and probably lack usable interface.

Doesn't RADAR work over land?
Does anyone believe in anti-facial-recognition makeup/masks when passive CELLDAR can track everything moving against the ambient backscatter? Warriors in Camouflage is a PSYOP, isn't it? NORAD can track individual birds, FFS, but such things don't work over land? Fully populated city sized "simulations" are used by think tanks, but none of these are connected to any real-time RADAR input?
What if govs had just a bit more advanced tech than they let on? Given current tech, in 50 years what would anyone imagine surveillance to be like? Isn't that future now? Hasn't Lain's All Seeing Eye been watching us masturbate since before Egypt? Am I just totally paranoid or aren't we all connected?

Linux Kernel in a Nutshell
http://www.kroah.com/lkn/
This book available free online is a little old but very straight forward. Go through it chapter by chapter and follow what it says. Come back here in a couple weeks and you can teach us how to configure the Linux kernel.
Bobby Newmark · 2022-06-18 15:15
>>60868
It can take a few tries at first.
Make sure you get the LTS version if you aren't using a system that manages the kernel sources (like the portage package manager on Gentoo or Arch Build System aka asp on Arch). Otherwise getting updates requires a lot of manual work. If the relevant kernel config option has been enabled, you can obtain the config of the running Linux kernel from /proc/config.gz (sometimes there is also a copy of the config in /boot dir).
>How do I configure the Linux kernel?
# Use utilities like dmesg, lscpu, lspci and hwinfo to get info about the system.
# Also refer to Gentoo wiki pages.
# I recommend you open 2 terminal emus or use tmux.
# Get the Linux source code.
USE="symlink initramfs" emerge sys-kernel/gentoo-sources bc sys-kernel/linux-firmware sys-firmware/intel-microcode sys-kernel/genkernel
# On Gentoo, /usr/src/linux should be symlink to the latest version of kernel sources.
# you can use symlink USE flag (automatic) or eselect kernel (manual) to manage the symlink
cd /usr/src/linux
# if you are upgrading, copy the old .config file from the old kernel src dir
# and run: make oldconfig
# Pro Tip: it is recommended to select display drivers as modules.
# Pro Tip: press ? to get help on the highlighted config option.
# Pro Tip: press / to search for config options (You can use number keys to jump to a search result)
# Pro Tip: you don't have to (or shouldn't) enable NTFS write support in the kernel. you should use sys-fs/ntfs3g instead.
make menuconfig
# build and install the kernel and the modules:
make -j4
make modules_install
make install
# rebuild initramfs and update Grub
# Important: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Microcode
genkernel --microcode --install initramfs # or you could also use dracut
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Use savefrom.net a.k.a. "ssyoutube".
Then select "with low quality" and from all the options select "mp4 360". For some reason only this option redirects you directly to the source video file.
Then you can convert the .mp4 to .mp3 by using any online file converter. Just search for "mp4 to mp3" in your favorite search engine.

How do I know if my thread is worth making?
Project 2501 · 2022-06-19 15:38
>>60968
The criteria I tend to use are:
1.) Is it unique? Could it fit in anything else on the board?
2.) Can it have follow up conversation? If so is it enough that it would flood any other thread it would be in (and would that be negative)?
3.) Is it worth killing the thread at the bottom of the catalog for it?
It's worth noting that this question probably belongs in /q/ but I guess it could fit here too. What would your prospective thread be about if you don't mind sharing?

I used to use Virtualbox on my linux host to run various guest OSes occasionally. Needed to run a few VMs for a project again and it's driving me crazy now
>every distro fails to install multiple times for some unspecified reason, installers quit, give errors that they shouldn't regardless of distro
>when I get them installed, constant seizure-inducing flickering and artifacting, firefox crashes instantly on every single VM I've used, even with 3D acceleration off
>even something as simple as apt upgrade fails with weird errors on every VM
If my hardware (GPU/RAM) was dying I assume I would notice it on my host OS. Should I try something else for my VMs? I've only ever used virtualbox so that's what I'm used to, I like the GUI.

Done some more troubleshooting and figured out that Firefox flickers and crashes in every VM regardless of distro, this also includes firefox-based browsers like TOR browser on Whonix.
Now I have to narrow down whether this has something to do with kernel version, graphics drivers or some other soykaf. It didn't start happening until recently (past 6 months)

worse is it's a seagate. you can simply look up the firmware version on smartctl.
although it could be something to do with how americans handle packages, they just love to wrestle and throw them at your porch or even when at the delivery vehicle.
never base off the quality/health of the drive with SMART since there are eBay/Amazon sellers that will use bad sector remover tools.
even if you had received the drive at 100% health which they would try to prove (sending you pics) there's a chance they're one of those people that actually use that "tool" and it's a good idea to run the drive and write 1-pass over the entire disk or maybe 1-pass delete just to find out whether if there's bad sectors almost immediately.
>>60972
that's such an old code but whatever. telegram is soykaf but so is the actual app which had shady trackers (which they have removed, you could use classyshark3xodus to find it).
you can simply just use any open QRNG api out there and use that personal result you get over your very own program. as example, you can overlay https://qrng.anu.edu.au/random-image-bw/ over OpenStreetMaps, it's up to you whether how you'd interpret black or white since location is flat in the map, then it's fine to use 2d image or numbers in matrix (but requires more code to do). it's up to you. the weird stuff is you might get unknown caller when you start dabbling in qrng, and electronics might act weird or shut itself off and on. happened with my phone and the thing is I didn't even use the app, just installed the app and tried to make it work since I had gmaps blocked on my router but it did not work (app was also buggy as fuarrrk and crashes or blank screen).

>1. what is the quickest and easiest way to share a large amount of files between two computers? have a macbook pro running mint and a windows laptop, with said files.
rsync (but it has notoriously bad man page; use https://cheat.sh/rsync)
For example: rsync -arvhPc --exclude '.cache' --exclude 'VirtualBox VMs' /home/lain /mnt/backup But there are other options: You could set up OpenSSH daemon and use SFTP. Use NFS for permanent sharing.
>2. i bought this laptop to teach myself programming, what are the best resources? (books, videos etc.)
It depends on why you want to learn. The pedagogically best option would be to learn a simple and small high-level language that doesn't have stuff that distracts you from learning the actual concepts, and you want to have at least 1 language that you know inside out. High-level languages provide instant feedback. For these reasons I recommend Lua or Scheme (use Guile or Chicken):
>https://www.lua.org/pil/contents.html (Lua)
>https://people.eecs.berkeley.edu/~bh/ss-toc2.html or https://ds26gte.github.io/tyscheme/ (Scheme)
The best way to learn is to write programs! Type the example programs from the book and run them (also, try modifying them). Do the exercises. At first it's best to follow a book. Once you have learned the basics, I recommend you do some exercises at https://projecteuler.net/ or https://exercism.org/ and then start writing your own programs.
There are also some programming channels on YT:
>https://www.youtube.com/c/Freecodecamp/videos
>https://www.youtube.com/c/Bisqwit/videos
>https://www.youtube.com/c/javidx9/videos
Most of programming videos on YT are kind of hit and miss...
You also need a good text editor. I recommend you try VSCodium (sic.), NeoVim and GNU Emacs and pick the one you like the most. NeoVim and Gnu Emacs have tutorials (C = ctrl, Meta (or M) = Alt, Super = windows key.):
> Gnu Emacs: Start emacs and type C-h t
> NeoVim: Start nvim and type :Tutor
I also recommend you install GNU/Linux (Like Xubuntu, Debian or Arch Linux/Artix Linux). You need to choose a distro you can trust. Also, I recommend you read The Linux Command Line book: https://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php
If you want to use Arch Linux, read https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Installation_guide and I also made a little copy paste a while ago: https://bpa.st/OLLA (or https://paste.debian.net/hidden/880e847d/ if you want to install Gentoo). Don't use unofficial Arch Linux installers because they suck.
At some point you may want to start using git or fossil version control system:
>Git (recommended): https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2 and https://www.atlassian.com/git/tutorials (<= start with this)
>Fossil: https://www.fossil-scm.org/home/doc/trunk/www/quickstart.wiki
>3. have a somewhat underpowered mini pc, has 4gb of ram, and an i3 from i dont know what year. it was built to run windows 8 so really not too bad. anyways what do i have to do to run a fileserver on it?
Install Debian stable on it: https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/amd64/iso-cd/firmware-11.3.0-amd64-netinst.iso
You also need to decide which kind of file server you want. The easiest option is to use the antiquated TFTP protocol or install the OpenSSH daemon and use SFTP (recommended). Also, set up ufw: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Ufw

I have an unnecessary question:
When I used to use Windows, I conducted an experiment: I opened up an image in Notepad. Needless to say, the text in the Notepad window was complete gibberish. Nonetheless, I thought, that if this is the image in text-form, then I should be able to copy and paste the text into a different notepad window, save the text as a .jpg, and then open the image again. The experiment however, failed.
Why? Why wouldn't this work?

I just tried it with a small picture and the NULLs don't get pasted properly. After pasting you can see the text files look different. So the copy-pasting is changing something.

I use an .onion version of an Invidious mirror.
Is it safe to log in with my YouTube account details in an .onion Invidious mirror?
From my understanding, the danger with using Tor as your regular browser is that you can't trust the exit node, so if you log in into your regular accounts, the exit node may capture the data (somehow?) thereby exposing your account information, which may potentially leak your real information.
From my understanding, with an .onion link, the connection is completely private and completely secure. In theory, it should be safe for me to log in with my actual account details that are connected to my Google Account and my actual real-life information.
So, is it safe for me to log in to an .onion Invidious mirror?
Trinity · 2022-06-29 01:13

Its safe if you trust the instance owner but you will be de-anonymized.
Apoc · 2022-06-29 02:32
>>61283
If you're going to log in to youtube why even bother using Tor? You'll completely deanonymise yourself and have lower data rates to watch the videos.
>the exit node may capture the data
The last node has to decrypt your torified requests in order to be able to actually send them to the destination server. If you're logging in through HTTPS which you most likely are then the exit node shouldn't really get any valuable information.
Unsigned · 2022-06-29 03:57
>>61283
>From my understanding, with an .onion link, the connection is completely private and completely secure.
Correct. Nothing between you and the onion site can see soykaf, including all the Tor nodes.
>In theory, it should be safe for me to log in
Assuming you trust the onion site itself to not steal your password.
>my actual real-life information
As >>61289 points out you've lost most of the advantages of using an onion site at this point. If the goal is to hide from everything in between you and youtube (but not youtube itself) then this will be safe though.
Cutter · 2022-06-29 06:17
>>61283
not like browsing youtube is in anyway "suspicious" maybe that depends on you but you can always just create a new account over a factory reset or a fresh phone assuming it wasn't previously used by anything tied to you personally nor was it bought in such a way, if bought on CC it's pretty much in the EMV blockchain, remember how transactions work? and just use that dummy to login on tor-invidious.
the isp will still see your tor IP dst/src packet sizes/shape and timings/timestamps to be compared over whatever exit node or exit isp.
tor isn't gonna make your browsing 100% anonymous but rather it will inform the ISP's middleboxes/tools that "this guy (subscription ID XXX) has tor traffic so let's watch his p2p/udp traffic too in case it hits one of the abuse IPs let's flag him and report over 100+ companies for internet threat"
you might as well just login to invidious normally and simply grab all your subscriptions or download your data over vanilla youtube then make a dummy afterwards.
although adding tor will NEVER make your browsing experience 100% anonymous. that never works, tor is more effective if you're using a throwaway for everything (devices) that hasn't been tied to you or people around you.

I've finally installed gentoo in a serviceable capacity. I did some distrohopping, first to Artix and then to Debian to get some experience with simpler installations, but Artix's installer overwhelmed me with options and Debian, which I thought would be the most professional, ended up causing a ton of headaches.
I'm not finished yet, but now that I have Plasma working, I finally have a proper environment to make configurations rather than just reading books and wikis off my phone. I'll read the paste and I'm sure I'll find my answers soon enough, but here's a list of things I need to do and if anyone has suggestions about going about them it would be much appreciated. I know so little about Linux or computing really, but I'm proud that I've stuck it out to get to this point. I just switched from Windows 8.

>enable keyboard in GRUB
You mean correct keymap in the GRUB menu? This might help: https://superuser.com/a/1188564
If keyboard doesn't work at all in GRUB, you may need to add this to your /etc/default/grub: GRUB_TERMINAL_INPUT=console
>build custom kernel (already learning about this)
See: >>60902
>configure openrc to start sddm on boot
>customize sddm and plasma (open to alternatives to either of these)
Easy. Just use rc-update add sddm default . I would use lightdm+lightdm-gtk-greeter or Xinit+startx instead.
>learn to ssh (I want to install gentoo on some soykafty laptop and figure this might help)
Just install OpenSSH daemon and enable it (rc-service sshd start). You probably need to enable root login (make sure to set/switch the root passwd on the LiveUSB). You might want to install and enable ufw as well (allow SSH only from LAN).
>enable mesa or some other AMD drivers instead of being stuck on llvmpipe (it's my understanding I shouldn't use proprietary ones?)
If you have AMD GPU, you need to add VIDEO_CARDS="amdgpu radeonsi" to your make.conf. Then just emerge x11-base/xorg-drivers or just the x11-drivers/xf86-video-amdgpu package. See the link in the beginning of this post for details.
>switch from X to Wayland
Your main choice is Sway (which is a clone of i3/i3-gaps). I think KDE also supports Wayland (just select the wayland session using the DM). You need to enable "wayland" USE flag in your make.conf and install xwayland (and run emerge --ask --update --deep --newuse --with-bdeps=y --keep-going @world). See >>58654 and the link in the beginning of this post for details.
>get some nice ASCII gentoo logo when starting a console because I liked that from Arch (I think I just figured out half of it, I just installed neofetch)
See >>61377 (add it to your .bashrc or .zshrc or whatever).
>figure out why the fuarrrk Chromium takes forever to build despite having a 12900k and 32gb of memory
Have you configured your makeopts in your make.conf? The optimal value would be the amount of threads you have. Chromium is notorious for taking a long time to build.

I just took apart my Thinkpad cause the plastic thingy that supports pins in one of my usb ports cracked and I wanted to see if I could solder some new ones from the other, same model that I have, and accidentally I noticed that the cpu fan on my other model is 0.25A while the one I have now is 0.24A, should I replace? does it matter? is it better when it's lower or higher?
Thinkpad T400 btw
also does it matter and I should buy epoxy glue or can I just use like superglue (ECA) for that plastic usb thing?

What language should I use if I wanted to build a faux desktop environment in a website? I don't know if vanilla JavaScript can even do it efficiently. I don't know how I would draw windows. Just tell me a language and I'll try my best to learn and implement it

You mean like the Window Maker website (https://www.windowmaker.org/)? They used only HTML+CSS to do it. FVWM site also did something similar (https://www.fvwm.org/). HTML+CSS and perhaps JavaScript (perhaps with jQuery or Ajax) should be enough to build the site. If you are looking for server-side languages, try Ruby (Rails). Read the "Pickaxe Book".

I've had this PC for a little over 5 years. I wanted to look into CPU overclocking for a one-off task and noticed the temp reporting as 100°C. Room temp is 15.
T Case spec is 70°C. I let it rest for a bit, and just by booting to BIOS it shot from 55->70 and climbing in half a minute.
On a scale of 'clean the dust on the fan and buy a new CPU this month' to 'you should have bought a new CPU yesterday', where am I at? Anything potential damage to other components I should look for?
I suspect the main issue is the thermal paste drying up, but I think it's too late for this CPU and I was looking into upgrading anyway
Jane Doe · 2022-07-03 06:55

The CPU will be fine, just clean the dust and reapply thermal compound and it will work like new.
Modern CPUs just throttle frequency when they reach high temperatures, worst case they shut down, maybe your CPU won't last as long but it will work just fine for now.

Now running two VMs @ 35°C.
I assume my issue is that last time I blew dust from the fan, I didn't fasten the stock cooler back into the motherboard the whole way (how it feels like it's going to snap when you push all four corners in), which I assume meant there was an airgap where most of the thermal compound goes. Which means it's probably been throttling for months. That was stupid.

I feel bad that I keep using this thread for Gentoo questions, but I guess that's what the thread is for. How the hell do I set up sound drivers? Beautiful morning, Lainons.
Guess this is quite the entry-level question, but as I'm struggling to become a Linux sysadmin in the "near" future before I die of old and currently trying to implement this, I humbly ask you, smart anonymous techies of /tech/. Sorry in advance for being too verbose, but I don't know how to communicate in any other way.
I have a disorganized insecure Windoze file server at work and I want to use Debian as a NFS server for a soykaf-ton of Windows clients. I'm trying to implement department-oriented shared folders with user passwords.
I've already made some tests with NFS and I made it work in a weird way:
>installed Debian 10 and the necessary NFS tools
>created shared folder, applied all permissions
>enabled NFS services on windoze client
>mapped shared folder, soykaf only appears on command line
>mapped shared folder through explorer, it starts existing to the user
>have no idea how Kerberos implementation on a server would work on windoze environment
>have no idea how to make a fairly secure user/group ecosystem work for both server and client environment
Is there a "right" way to do this? I'm open for all sorts of hints and tips, other GNU/Linux tools that would be more adequate, texts, etc. I've read the Debian documentaton on NFS/Kerberos but learned nothing to solve this specific problem.

The distribution kernel should work. But you need to enable alsa USE flag or (if you use it) pulseaudio USE flag in your make.conf and run emerge --ask --update --deep --newuse --with-bdeps=y --keep-going @world . Read the wiki pages for ALSA/Pulseaudio/Pipewire (depending on which you want to use).

I think openwrt's graphical firewall/iptables settings is god-tier if you have something in layer2/l2tp or similar (which require a really functioning firewall to block ddos or probes/hax). They also implement bcp38.
Most of RasPi is supported by them but you can probably find something better with built-in WLAN hardware for AP capabilities (not sure but RasPi might need proprietary as always).
As far as I know there's no other firmware that actually patch krack or modern attacks except openwrt. Some official proprietary firmware do but those have/had backdoors and updates will never come for those, also their site page and firmware links gets deleted after 2 years.

httpd -S runs a config test and prints enabled vhosts and their ips, main server info, module info, and the values of some options.
By the way, the server is running on almalinux 9, so config files under /etc/httpd look like:
>conf/

> `- magic
>conf.d/
> `- ssl.conf, php.conf, etc
>conf.modules.d/
> `- 00-lua.conf, 00-base.conf, etc
My vhosts are in /etc/httpd/vhosts.conf, which is `Include`ed.
>Are you doing this on a machine listening on the public internet or are you testing locally
It's set up on lan, my machines are using my server's dnsmasq. I've tried more/less specificity with the VirtualHosts directive (10.0.1.99:80, *:80), and only *:$port entries seem to work.
I think the issue might be with my routing, seeing as how only port vhosts work, with name and ip being seemingly ignored.
Although that may also not be true, as 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.1.1 are likewise ignored, and when the configs are copied exactly to my laptop (arch), everything works perfectly.
Anyways, thank you very much for the help.

I want to buy a laptop. I'm somewhat interested in being able to game on it, but to be honest, if I can smoothly emulate PS1 games, that's good enough.
I want the laptop for internet-browsing and programming. I want to install Linux on it and I want it to run smoothly whilst I browse the internet.
My issue with my Thinkpad X60 after installing Lubuntu was the warning that my Thinkpad's CPU uses some kind of old form of processing data (SSE1? It looked familiar due to my experience with PCSX2) and so, in time, as Lubuntu gets updated, my Thinkpad will become incompatible with the latest version.
Considering this, the feature I desire most in a laptop is knowing that it's going to be a long time until "lightweight" Linux distros leave the hardware behind. Preferably, I'd like to use Linux Mint though, rather than Lubuntu again. I'm still new to Linux and wish to slowly ease myself into all of this.

>I want to buy a laptop. I'm somewhat interested in being able to game on it
I recommend buying a desktop if you want to play games. Whatever you do, get a computer with Intel or AMD graphics. I heard Dell XPS laptops are good. But again, I highly recommend buying the parts and assembling a desktop PC yourself. There are at least 2 reasons for this: Laptops overheat way more easily and laptops can't be upgraded nowadays (most laptops are even hard to get open and some refuse to work with other than stock parts). I recommend you visit https://www.logicalincrements.com/ and pick a build and tweak it as needed. I highly recommend you get a ATX or EATX case with dust filters. Also, don't bother getting a SSD since Linux boots so quickly even without it (this way you can also save some money).
Some parts and brands I can recommend:
>MoBo: Asus, MSI
> CPU: either the recommended on logical increments site or AMD Ryzen 5 5600/AMD Ryzen 5 5600x
> RAM: G.Skill, Kingston, Corsair (I recommend G.Skill RipJaws DDR4 RAM)
> GPU: Using Nvidia GPU is not recommended. Recommended brands: Sapphire (best but can expensive), Asus, MSI. Get one with at least 4GB VRAM.
> HDD: either Western Digital or Toshiba
> PSU: corsair or seasonic (use a PSU calculator and get a slightly better PSU than you need)
> Case: Corsair, Cooler Master, Fractal Design (if you can get it at a low price), BitFenix. You want a ATX or EATX case with dust filters!
> Coolers: use the stock cooler for CPU or the recommended choice on logicalincrements.
>inb4 don't know how to build a computer
Just watch a couple vids online and use the motherboard manual. It's not actually hard.
>My issue with my Thinkpad X60 after installing Lubuntu

If you go with Debian, I recommend upgrading to testing at some point (https://wiki.debian.org/DebianTesting).
Basically, you need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list and replace "stable" and "bullseye" with "testing" and run sudo apt update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade Don't use 32-bit OS for your new laptop/desktop computer, however. After installation, you can select a different Desktop Environment using tasksel (you need to install it). I recommend you select Xfce4 DE. If you want to squeeze more power out of your thinkpad, I recommend trying a WM, like icewm. Just install Lightdm + lightdm-gtk-greeter (this is the DM or the login screen) so you can easily switch to the WM/DE you want.
>I'm still new to Linux and wish to slowly ease myself into all of this.
If you encounter any issues, I recommend you read Arch Linux wiki (even if you don't use Arch). Also, The Linux Command Line is great and free book: https://linuxcommand.org/tlcl

I recommend Toshiba or Acer if you can find nice old laptops but those are kinda expensive now (despite used or about 10 years old/2012 model) so you might get cheaper stuff by purchaisng used desktop.
If you have the funds I recommend getting AMD APU thinstation, or maybe even a Intel NUC.
If you like a little risk you can buy used laptops or broken ones, and fix them yourself if you own a universal AC adapter. It's usually just >reseat ram/replace and reset cmos.
Modern laptop keyboards are kinda mediocre and more modern ones tend to lack SATA connections (they use mpci SSD), have no aftermarket battery (unless you hardcore DIY), lack ports, and may degrade easier than you think that's why I'm also kinda not attracted on getting a new one anytime soon (and also a phone probably has better specs and SCREEN).
.
Dell and HP office thinstation/sff desktops tend to have cheap and good refurb and quality.
recs by >>61902 are great too.
keep in mind a good PSU is the most critical part, fake/unknown ones tend to have weaker peak wattage and may cause more problems (zap your HDDs) when it craps out. Both HP/Dell usually use really good PSU despite being usually proprietary (there are pin adapters available out there but funnily enough there's tons of original factory replacement PSU aftermarket available out there that cost like $10 only but are 80 plus gold and above so you can just stock on plenty of them).

>Everyone has their own isp in there so is it better to just blow everyone the fuarrrk out with a amplifier mesh from the gateway or just to find something decent on the H band for her?
I didn't understand any of that.
What is H band? Why everyone has isp? and what the heck is amplifier mesh? "AmpliFi mesh(tm)" wifi extender? Keep in mind increasing the "gain" won't amount to anything if the entire network is Glitched (as explained below).
Here's the problem:
The wifi device can be affected by neighboring devices - that are already authenticated to it.
Say the main wifi was made 2012+ and the device "box" you're trying to connect was made in 2008 or uses wifi 2 or wifi 3, even wifi 4 draft, there would be connection f**k ups since the AP was higher version and deprecated the old ones. you need all devices to be modern in a network otherwise it downgrades everything to wifi 1 and drops devices not capable of wifi 1, vice versa. If someone had samsung corby connected to the AP there will be f**k ups for sure.
Junichi Fujiwara · 2022-07-20 03:01
In detail:
Let's say a 2012 "wifi 4" AP router has a PSP 2000 (wifi 1 or 802,11b) client: the main wifi device will downgrade to 802.11b if it is not multiband
and then if there is a 2010 laptop with "wifi 4 draft" Intel NIC, the "wifi 4" AP router will also glitch and kill the connection of rest of the clients (including the PSP and all phones). This happens a lot, if I see a intel wifi on a network, that's usually the culprit. Intel WiFi Link 5100 series NIC are draft-N and will degrade the ENTIRE network.
I'm thinking the main router of the "old folks home" has a "wifi 1" client hiding somewhere and the "box" you're trying to connect to AP is strictly wifi 2/3/4 only so it might get NO data at all even if authenticated since the AP was running in "wifi 1 mode".
The solution is to just either find the right mix, experiment with plenty of other router/bridges which mixes well with whatever wifi generation the AP has (making the bridge/router do automatic band) and then use the ethernet connection over the "box".
Maybe a wifi extender might work or might not, make sure the wifi extender supports "802,11a/b/g/n" and is NOT authenticated to anything else (remmeber the PSP 2000 and the draft N f**king everyone?). I figured out these problems on my own but it seems to have never been talked about on sites.
Also, sometimes it requires a restart of the AP, especially when a f**king draft N device is around.
Check the wifi generation numbers on the right table in here:

I want to create an ovs-bridge for multiple VMs to communicate with one another but it keeps screwing up left and right. Using KVM/libvirt
1) How can I verify my VM is actually using it?
2) When I add my ethernet-connection to the bridge it dies immediately. No way to access it as long as the bridge is master of eno1. Why is that and how do I prevent it?
3) Number 2 happens with regular, non-ovs bridges as well.
4) Virt-Manager never shows the bridge as a network option. How do I make it show?
Alternatively, please rec books because the net shows 10 million ways to do it and none work.

I want to unwatermark a scraped comic but one of the watermarks drifts around on the page so I can't use any of the usual whole-image, mask-based methods. I'm also leery of general techniques since they still leave visible artifacts. The ideal that I'm going for would be to position the watermark, "subtract", then use a GAN to clean up the artifacts.

I wonder why so many developers use real names, like on git, system messages, mailing lists, etc.
Perhaps there is not much to be gained from it but there is a certain simplicity. I'm not sure if I should jump in to using it though. Maybe I should consider why I am considering it. I used to reference my real name, and it makes sense for communication and if I want to present myself, but I would need to come up with an alias alternatively.

This is why I don't code anything. The tortured grep invocation I scraped together apparently doesn't like certain, unusual binary sequences despite ostensibly being escaped. I was convinced the data was more fragmented than what filefrag was reporting, and that somehow the raw blocks requested from block_dump weren't representative of the underlying disk image. It was only after systematically comparing the other tools I had built up to pick apart the filesystem that I eliminated the grep invocation as being responsible. Now the problem looks easy again with many contiguous blocks. smh. At least the use of these tools lets me ditch the slow substring search method for working directly with the FS. I should be done by tomorrow.

I literally don't know how to deal with viruses or spyware and so I apply a scorched-earth solution and wipe the drive. It always works so I've got no complaints.
If I wipe a pre-built PC that came with Windows 10, how do I re-install Windows 10? It didn't come with the Windows OS on an installation disc, so what do I do? Am I forced to buy a Windows 10 disc, on top of paying for Windows 10 with the pre-built?! (I know where I am but, legal solutions only) Like, isn't that kind of exploitative? You basically have to buy the OS twice! Man, I should just build my own cheap pre-builts in the future. It's not even remotely acceptable to buy pre-builts.

Anyway, yeah, I want to wipe the HDD on my pre-built, but it didn't come with Win10 on a disc. Wiping the HDD would wipe Win10. Do I really have to buy Win10 again, but in disc-form? Or is there something I can, legally, do?

I'm the guy desiring a better app for sound file-playback on Android smartphones. I mentioned what Spotify can do but never provided a picture, which, in hindsight, feels a bit lazy.
So here it is.
There's the usual, recognizable play/pause, previous track and next track buttons, but then there's also a 15 on both sides with arrows pointing to the respective side, relative to the play-pause button.
Those buttons let you go back 15 seconds or skip ahead 15 seconds, rather than relying on the seek bar which, for a 1-hour+ talk, can be quite painful to use.
The 1x is my selected playback speed. I'm sure you know YouTube offers speeds up to 2x, and down to 0.25x. So there it is, a more complete help-request.

You don't need that much math to make small but useful programs/scripts. You can accomplish a lot just with the knowledge of high school math/precalculus. I recommend reading Precalculus Mathematics in a Nutshell

The choice of the programming language you use also matters a lot. Do not start with C or C++, Scala or Rust (I also recommend avoiding Java/C# and Kotlin as well). I recommend that you start with something simple like Lua or Racket/Scheme (use Guile or Chicken). Ruby, Python or Go (if you want to specify the types for your variables) are also good options.
To help you choose the language, I recommend that you look up code examples at: https://rosettacode.org/wiki/Rosetta_Code and pick the one you like the most.

there's a whole world to explore in IT, cyber security, etc. You don't have to be a software engineer, and regardless of the job you do, you can likely do it with free software. Don't be unreasonable hard on yourself. Maybe you should walk away from programming for a bit, try something else, then come back to it and see how you feel.

I flashed DivestOS on my old android phone. I'd used LineageOS before. And the reason why I moved to divest from lineage is divest has better security when comparing with lineage.
But I can't really recognize how it is great. It still feels like lineageos but little bit different default settings.
Also I'm little bit annoyed with divestos came with mull, simple gallery and others while lineageos came with its softwares even they are kinda bad. It's kinda autism things, but lineageos has more light weight than divest.
It makes me suffer, like I was suffered by distro-hopping. Thanksfully, I run away from distro-hopping meme. But now, smartphones custom roms make me deadly.

On a Linux just try to unload the driver of the iGPU, it shouldn't allow you to do so if in use, but you should be able to unload it if you drop to a tty and kill the display manager that is using the driver. Send distro info if stuck
`lshw -c video | grep driver`
[output e.g.: ...` configuration: driver=i915 latency=0`...]
`sudo modprobe -r i915`
Windows just try to disable the device in ⊞+R 'devmgmt.msc'

configuration: depth=32 driver=amdgpu latency=0 I'm using an Intel CPU and AMD GPU, so I guess I at least set that up properly. I'm using Gentoo, rather unsuccessfully but I am making an earnest effort. Running lshw without grep also shows that the iGPU is in fact disabled and that no display is claimed.

How to get a small number of ghost followers for a Telegram channel?
Miho Iwakura · 2022-08-17 13:41
I know nothing about network stuff but I'm trying to configure something on my router. Problem is that the router belongs to the landlord, and although the internet I connect to comes from an Araknis router, accessing the router gateway and the router login screen suggests that the internet is actually coming from a Comcast Business router. I guess the landlord has the comcast router hooked up to the whole building and the Araknis in my apartment is more like a modem?
How would I be able to get the password/locate the "actual" router (sent the landlord an email but I suspect he doesn't know either and paid someone to set it all up). If someone could point me to read more on how this router to router thing works I'd also appreciate that thanks

unless you have access to the physical device, you don't have the password. There might be 'ways' to get it, but it could be one of any devices. What you have is a router, if there is another modem actually providing the internet. To be honest, you're not very clear as to what the structure is, and what you're trying to do, which is needed to provide more specific help.
Your internet isn't coming from the thing in your possession then? what does it do? Does it only provide wireless? etc>>62599

Yeah, I have no idea how it works and as an aside I'm curious as to how its all setup; landlord confirmed it was setup by someone else and he doesn't really know where the physical device is. When I connect to the WiFi it seems to be connecting to the router in my room (which goes to some wlan cable in the walls of the apartment complex), but the gateway ip I'm getting via ip route and such points to a different router model. I'm curious what this setup is as again I know nothing about networking; is it some kind of extender?
I would like to access the configuration for the router but without the password obviously I cannot. I'm wondering if I can track it down by finding the signal, but I don't know how it shows up on the scanned wifi sources, since my wifi just points back to the router in my apartment.
Thanks for the help; even if my question is too vague to really work if you could point me to a book or smt to learn more about this stuff I would appreciate it since I've found a workaround for what I was trying to do for now

[Distro thread hit reply limit, post doesn't deserve thread]
Thanks to the lainon who recommended against trying Manjaro instead of Arch. I always thought it was wrongly recommended to beginners for practical reasons but wow, two days later they've let their SSL cert expire for the fourth time, and a major Pinephone community dev just left PINE64 (not PostmarketOS) today because of Manjaro and PINE64 screwing over all the other OSs.

Manjaro was the distro that got me to stop distro hopping, but that was more thanks to xfce than anything about Manjaro itself. I slowly realized that basically everything I liked about it was arch and every headache I had with it was the manjaro team's fault. It really feels like a mistake that it's been allowed to be paraded as the beginner distro lately.

Again, what you want to specifically do will help me point you in the right direction. It sounds like the device you have with you is either a: a repeater or b: just providing wireless for a device that doesn't provide wireless (wireless router, a common setup as many modems from the company won't provide it)
I could see a potential issue if you needed to port-forward something and the modem was blocking it, but again the structure could be one of ten things and without seeing it.
but one way to tell if your router is doing anything is to see if it is bridged. I would start there on your reading:
what is bridge mode, how it works, access point, (AP mode on many) etc.
might be a good place to start since this is so general and you are not mentioning exactly what you are trying to do

I only have very basic bitch understand of tech. I recently made my own PC (from 2 junked pieces of soykaf), and got the HD out of an old vista computer from back when I was a teenager. Honestly I just want to go back through all the WC3 mods I made and see whatever other kind of soykaf I had on there to enjoy the memories.
My monkey brain was like well soykaf just slap that thing in there then open it and click on it. When I did so, a window in vista style opened (while running win 10) asking for my old password. This froze everything, I had to hard reset with the HD not attached to get it going again.
Not sure if it's relevant, but my other two drives are an SSD with the win10 OS on it and another HD for storage. Any idea how I could get those old files? I've played with the idea of setting up and learning linux, and I know there is a way to run virtual environments for old OS in it so maybe thats one way to it. Just asking if anyone knows an easier fix than that, or if there's a general direction you could point me in.

>Any idea how I could get those old files? I've played with the idea of setting up and learning linux,
Easy.
Download Rufus (https://rufus.ie/en/) and Xubuntu iso (https://xubuntu.org/). You should also verify the integrity of the Xubuntu iso you downloaded.
You can use PowersHell: Get-FileHash xubuntu-22.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso -Algorithm SHA256 You also need 1 empty flash drive.
If you want to dual-boot Xubuntu and windows you need to use Windows disk management utilities to shrink the windows partition or another partition (reserve 20GB or more for Xubuntu if you want to dual-boot it.) Use the GUI method: https://www.diskpart.com/disk-management/shrink-volume-6289.html
But you can also just boot the live system, if you want to.
Then use Rufus to make a USB that can be used to boot Xubuntu live system. Power off your PC and Connect the HDD back. Boot up Xubuntu LiveUSB (you need to use BIOS boot menu). Then you can just mount the partition with the files (use lsblk command to determine the right partition and then mount it or use the thunar GUI file manager). After this, just copy the files to another flash drive or partition. If you want to install Xubuntu, just open the installer and select the free space as the destination. I recommend that you create a separate /boot partition that's ~512MB. You don't need a swap partition, if you do not want to hibernate to disk. If you want a swap partition, it should be about 2x as large as the amount of RAM you have (use free -h). Keep in mind that a swap partition can cause unnecessary writes (wear) on a SSD.
The idea of a LiveUSB environment is that you don't write anything on the PC, until you mount a partition or install the distro (Xubuntu in this case). I recommend you do a full installation (and not a minimal installation), if the installers asks you. You can keep the defaults (install without non-free codecs; you can install the stuff you need later using apt ). If you do something that has system-wide effects (like install new software), you need to become root/Superuser (admin) using sudo
For example, to fetch the list of new packages and update your system you need to open the terminal and type: sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade But if you only want to search for a package you don't need to become a superuser. For example: apt search emacs or apt show neovim I recommend that you start with the nano editor and then try both NeoVim (nvim) and GNU Emacs (emacs). Both (Neo)Vim and GNU Emacs have a build-in tutorial (in addition to the man-pages).
If you want to learn more about Linux, I recommend this free book: https://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php

I try to organize my files with only [a-z._-]. '.' is for file extensions (if applicable), '-' is for a delimeter, e.g. between number/year and title for music/shows/etc., and '_' is used for spaces within each delimited category. Should I ever use '-' as a "delimiter" within e.g. titles (e.g. if there are logical separations in a title like the given title, movement, and opus of a classical piece, or would it seem more faithful to the organizational technique to simply get rid of all characters within each delimited character that cannot validly be represented by [a-z_]? Also, when, if ever, should I delimit between "items" outside of track number/year in media files (in your thinking)? Does it make any sense to do clumsily in various file types?

The wired version of the Xbox 360 Controller had this feature that I thought was so clever.
It had this "easy detach" feature where the wire itself, is split into a plug and plug-socket along the wire, so if you pull the controller too harshly, the controller's plug doesn't pull your console down off the table, the plug-socket along the wire would separate instead, thereby preserving your console.
Are there any headphones with this feature? The Xbox 360 was such a popular console, and gaming is associated with headphones, so I imagine this idea was either already popular before they implemented it, or it got popular after it was implemented.
In my experience, with my uncontrolled daydream-pacing and my now-damaged front-panel headphone-socket, headphones really need a feature like this. Surely it's been done?

for instance that bug in Apple's SSL stack where some code formatting mistake caused a vulnerability. lint
for instance heartbleed where C caused a vulnerability. rust
for instance when it's revealed that some big company never even tested some obvious code path. CI
this happens all the time, even outside of programming. for instance when "child pornography" became illegal because some weirdo had sex with a kid and it made the news and now we have to search everyone's computers every day for no reason and all the convictions are usually just for people attracted to older teens who don't know she's under 18

>Which is the real computer: the actual silicon chip + memory etc or the abstract machine with "stack frames" and so on.
Unfortunately, the actual silicon chip and memory are the real computer. For an interesting and different stack model, look into Forth machines, such as the F18A.
Now, some machines implemented high-level machinery in hardware, like type checking and garbage collection, but they lost in the marketplace. After all, businesses make more money selling anti-virus and other snake oil than a working computer.

To be clear I'm not talking about OOP or abstract data types etc but abstraction in tech.
>Unfortunately, the actual silicon chip and memory are the real computer.
Yeah but the logic of operation that the real hardware is trying to get close to (or imo, emulate), is modeled by an abstraction. An abstract machine is emulated by hardware. It's not perfect just like any emulation but if it were the other way around: the hardware is abstracted away for us to do the "emulation" of it, that would seem like an improper hierarchy situation. Because if the HW doesn't act according to the abstract machine, we consider it "inaccurate", "buggy", "incomplete" etc. Idk if that makes sense.

in most cases the "gateway website" you see on your side is actually the remote router.
it means your router acts more like a thin client that screenshares a (desktop) server (like a workspace mainframe where you are a virtual client).
there is sadly no amount of customization you could do if that's the case. they also disallow modifications since someone could replace the ipv4 dns to manual and put a malicious dns server in the main router.
>the Araknis in my apartment is more like a modem?

> >>62622
>VPN
It's not good if you use wifi connection. I suggest you do it over the wire.
It's probably a better idea to just get your own internet connection.
There's really nothing you could do if the topology is vague enough, it could be behind 3 routers and extenders if the building is that huge. If there's really nothing in between, you could ask the ISP to set up a lan port on the main router for your "ip camera cctv" or "xbox" (be sure to already imitate the device as it might be only whitelisted to such mac) so you get a lan port that's perfect for l2tp vpn or basically a lan port that needs no further "port forwarding" as the lan port itself has every port opened (which also means poor security so you gotta set up your pihole if you do).

Agent Smith · 2022-09-22 08:18
>>63813
You're in luck! This is an easy site to scrape. First, you want to check the sitemap to see if it lists the pages you're interested in. soybooru's is fuarrrkhueg and malformed, so I recommend downloading it directly and processing it as rendering in the browser will kill your cpu:
wget https://booru.soy/sitemap.xml
sed -nE 's|.*<loc>(.*)</loc>.*|\1|p' sitemap.xml | grep '/view/' > pages.txt Normally it's bad to use sed for processing xml, but the more appropriate xml sel -t -v '//*[local-name() = "loc"]' won't work on malformed xml. Anyway, you're in luck that the image pages are listed. The alternative would've been iterating through ids. With the pages at hand, we need to download them for processing. I'm a retard, so I'll use bash again:
mkdir -p cache
xargs basename < pages.txt |\
while read id; do
wget -nc "https://booru.soy/post/view/$id" -O cache/$id.html && sleep 1s
done If you open a page like https://booru.soy/post/view/1 in devtools (firefox, rightclick->inspect), you can poke around at the html. The images are embedded directly, so you just need to search on the general pattern and extract the src .
mkdir -p images
for page in cache/*; do
pup '#main_image attr{src}' <$page | xargs -I{} wget -nc 'https://booru.soy/'{} -P images && sleep 1s
done And done! The only thing easier would've been asking the admins for a db dump.

My bad. Change xargs basename < pages.txt to xargs -n1 basename < pages.txt , and make sure you have all the mentioned programs installed. It's likely you don't have pup . Besides that, the code should work - I ran it now to confirm. It would also be a good idea to study it in case you're interested in scraping other websites in the future. Normally scraping is far more involved, but this just happened to be a nice "toy problem" for teaching the basics.
>shell and as script
Generally speaking, there's little difference between running from the commandline or as a script. Sometimes, you might need to run a script as if it were done from the commandline by using source somescript.sh or just . somescript.sh , but that's usually only when you want to keep the variables or declarations in scope. E.g., if you have some handy functions or aliases, you can use them from the commandline by sourcing the file you declared them in.

what is the point of "else if" when 99% of the uses are just emulating a switch?
if eq_fn(x, val1) a()
else if eq_fn(x, val2) b()
else if eq_fn(x, val3) c()
else if eq_fn(x, val4) d()
else if eq_fn(x, val5) e()
Agent Richard Gill · 2022-09-22 18:39
>>63837
switch statements only allow you to operate on one variable of one type which can be limiting and unergonomic. They also don't handle range conditions well in most languages. Complex types/structs/objects may not be supported (Java didn't supporting switching on strings for a long time, for example) without adding extra boilerplate.
if (x == SomeEnumValue && y.len() == 0) { a() }
else if (z) { b() }
else if (x == SomeOtherEnumValue) { c() }
else if (y.len() > 0) { d() }
else { e() }
Would be ugly to make that into a switch.
Some languages use match expressions that use more powerful pattern matching and alleviate some of those issues. For example, an equivalent to the above code is
match (x, y.len(), z) {
(SomeEnumValue, 0, _) => a(),
(.., true) => b(),
(SomeOtherEnumValue, .. ) => c(),
(_, y, _) if y > 0 => d(),
_ => e(),
};
But you can probably see that doing that can get messy quickly for certain situations, even with a small number of variables.
>99% of the uses are just emulating a switch?
If 99% of the if/else-if blocks you're writing are just emulating a switch, you're probably writing unidiomatic code.
if eq_fn(x, val1) a()
else if eq_fn(x, val2) b()
else if eq_fn(x, val3) c()
else if eq_fn(x, val4) d()
else if eq_fn(x, val5) e()
In this code, eq_fn() is preventing you from using a switch, since switches don't let you use whatever function you want. if x and val1..val2 are of types that your language will default to eq_fn() when checking their equality, you could use a switch, otherwise you can't (unless your language lets you tell switch to use an arbitrary equality function)
Ivan Horvat · 2022-09-22 19:16
>>63842
>But you can probably see that doing that can get messy quickly for certain situations, even with a small number of variables.
Yes and hence why these advanced switches with additional crap and elseif mechanisms are useless. They are made after some naive interpretation of the English language which never matches up to code anyway. I'm pretty sure most programmers actually just use else if because they are spelling out what their code does in English. But since 99% of code is just a bunch of disjoint clauses, they may as well have used a bunch of if statements one after the other and would have achieved the same effect (yeah there may be some performance differences, when not given a sufficiently smart compiler).

>Actually it was kinda bad
Yes, the code was made to be simple/instructional, not necessarily efficient. However:
> I downloaded cache for 2 days
This is to be expected for a single-threaded process on a domestic internet connection. Scraping should be a last resort because it is the epitome of inefficiency. Sometimes you're lucky and a website exposes a useful sitemap or API you can tap into directly, but too often you'll be forced to navigate like a user and waste time pulling resources you don't actually care about to get to the ones you are interested in.
>Python
This will help. Python will allow you to re-use connections (less time wasted!) and write more intelligent scrapers that can work around anti-bot measures (very common!). That said, if you're interested in tackling larger problems and/or lack patience, invest in a (scraping-friendly) VPS. Doesn't have to be fancy. Datacenters get lower ping, higher bandwidth, and a VPS provides you with more "pipes" to draw from - all help to speed up the job. Keep in mind whatever laws are relevant in your jurisdiction, and that aggressive scraping will not make you friends with the site owner; serving pages/data to scrapers costs them money and makes no revenue in return.
>thank you again
The best way you can thank me is making the data from your scrapes available. Throw it on Archive, a mega, a torrent, whatever. In a perfect world, websites like booru.soy would pull its soyjacks from a mutable torrent that anyone could directly download from so the data wouldn't be gatekept by a web interface. People could make their own websites, even, to interact with the data on whatever terms they think are most appropriate. Scraping should not have to exist.

Try to use gallery-dl and yt-dlp (and similar tools) if you can. Make the script wait a random amount of time (say 1-3 secs) before downloading a file to avoid getting derezzed (wget has --random-wait option. read the man-page). You could also limit your download speed.

I recommend that you dual-boot Botnet 10 and Linux (such as Xubuntu. Check the distro thread for other options, if you don't like Xubuntu). Use Linux for everything else besides gaming. I recommend you move all your data to the Linux partition (except gaming stuff), if you can.
The easiest way is to first use Windows disk management tools to shrink a partition (reserve at least ~20-30GB for Linux). Then use Rufus (https://rufus.ie/en/) to create a USB flash drive that can be used to test and/or install Xubuntu (this is called "LiveUSB" or "LiveCD"). You can also use the liveUSB to test Xubuntu without installing anything on your HDD. If you want to practice installing Linux, you can use VirtualBox.
If you want to lean more about Linux CLI/Bash, I recommend this free book: https://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php
Also, you can use PowersHell to check the integrity of the Linux installation iso: Get-FileHash gentoo.iso -Algorithm SHA256
>I'm thinking about modifying an win7 for this computer.
I don't recommend doing that since Windows 7 is no longer supported. It doesn't get any new upgrades and new games and HW don't support it well.

Torrents are good for this. Seeding a torrent is a bit like hosting a server that lets people download whatever bits and pieces of the torrent they want. If your computer is only online 1hr of every day, someone interested in downloading the whole torrent would still be able to eventually download it because they just ask for bits they don't have yet each day until they're finished. It's not like an upload that can "fail" partway through. Better yet, when that person has downloaded some part of the torrent, they are able to contribute to other people interested in downloading, making everything faster for everyone. Not trying to pressure you to do so, but as someone with a similar connection, torrents are downright magical.

Pip is part of Python and it used to install Python packages. You need to download Python from https://www.python.org/ if you are on Windows. But on Linux you can (and should) just use the (OS) package manager, but Python is preinstalled on pretty much all Linux distros. Also, you are supposed to use rtspbrute at command line. If rtspbrute -h doesn't work, you could try python -m rtspbrute -h
I also highly recommend that you use Linux (especially for cyber security related stuff). The easiest way to start is to dual boot Linux and Windows. First, use Windows disk management tools to shrink a partition (reserve at least 20-30GB or more for Linux). Then use Rufus (https://rufus.ie/en/) to make a flash drive (LiveUSB) that can be used to install a Linux distro. I recommend you start with Xubuntu (https://xubuntu.org/). The Xubuntu LiveUSB can be used to test Xubuntu without installing anything, and you can launch the Xubuntu installer from the desktop. The installer will ask you if you want to use the largest portion of free space as destination.

Okay thanks it worked. Also yeah, I'll look into linux. I just created a virtual disk of 30 GB. And yeah I know when it comes to privacy Linux is the best. And that corporation can track my info. But as long as I don't do anything stupid online I should be okay privacy wise. I always try to use sites java script disabled, when posting images/videos I remove data, things like that. Especially it's not like I'll be doing anything illegal.

But brute forcing passwords of cameras is illegal...

True but it’s on the same illegal level as streaming/pirating movies online like fmovies.to, sure it’s illegal but the police aren’t going to do anytime because they’ve got better things to worry about. And it’s not like I’m going to be that guy speaking through the camera to a baby lol. Stalking a certain female sure but not that creepy stuff.

Anyone know a good way to organize files or data with tags on my Linux OS? For example, if I have files that have tag "x", I can search files with the tag "x" to get matching results.

How, and in specifics, would I go about exposing someone's ip & uname info with javascript or php as an attack method with a honeypot or malicious link?
I'm dealing with a particularly nasty spammer who I want to get rid of that is tucked behind vpns or using cell service.
Additionally, is there any tool to expose imei or carrier provider information from a cell?
I just want to know what book I have to read and what I have to cook up to get rid of this pedophile so I can get his ass in jail.

There isn't an easy way to get the ip of someone behind vpns. A honeypot or malicious link might get you an imei, somehow. You can send a link to them to get their carrier provider, but even then, it's a hit or miss.

You would have to know a honeypot or already have malicious links that can get an imei or their carrier provider, unless you mean their isp.
