Haven't used email in years, need to send a mail to a gmail. Just spent the last two hours finding out that all the free webmail providers that don't require a phone number have crippled their service in some way - mailboxdotorg only allows mails from free accounts to be sent within it's domain, maildotcom just won't allow account creation, it goes on. How can I send an email to this dope? There was a web based service I used a year ago that allowed managing multiple mailboxorg type temp accounts, but I can't fuarrrking find it. What are those services called? I am a ball of rage in a bucket of wasted time. Please talk me down. edit: hahahaha can't post in tech questions thread because the thread has reached the limit fml.

John Doe · 2022-05-29 06:13
How about postman.i2p ? You can send mail to clrearnet with it and no googlesque verification non-sense.
Jane Doe · 2022-05-29 17:07
Thanks for the recs, most of them are for disposable addresses that will only receive mail (not send it) though. Without setting up i2p the only option seems to be proton. We need more ways to communicate with....normal people, hate that word........without touching the botnet as much as possible.
Cereal Killer · 2022-05-29 20:12
Protonmail works fine for me as my main email account
John Doe · 2022-05-29 20:20
>>60358 And that probably means no email. Email from a technical standpoint is old and archaic, and thus requires a lot of extensions to the point of it being basically impossible to roll your own server securely (and get past filters on big email sites). So where does that leave us? Matrix probably, or maybe XMPP. Most "normal" and "non-normal" people both really like IM, whether it's closed like Snapchat or open and federated like Matrix. When it comes to account sign-in, maybe a decentralized SSO not tied to a communication standard such as email or SMS would be good. Obviously it doesn't exist yet though.
Guthrie · 2022-05-30 10:38
>>60372 Asking people you've just met to install something like matrix is not realistic in my experience, and I got some charm. People are not interested in anything outside SMS. facebook, or phone calls. So how do we communicate with normal people without exposure to the botnet?

>>60333 It requires you to provide your real IP address though. If you try signing up over tor you'll be asked a phone number. %%fuarrrk protonmail%%

>>60385 What is a "real" IP address? just sign up using a VPN, or just do a DHCP release and renew at your network edge firewall\router if you are so concerned.
Yu-ichi · 2022-05-30 20:31
>>60384 > Nothing in life is free. Everyone point and laugh. Come on, altogether now.
John Doe · 2022-05-30 20:40
>>60382 The best solution is probably to run into people in-person regularly: Maybe you're neighbors, maybe you use the same bus-stop or frequent the same places. Other than that, the compromise I make is to use botnet with free software (Discord with purple-discord, XMPP→SMS services like Cheogram). Not ideal, but at least you can talk to people.
Unidentified · 2022-05-31 09:51
>>60411 "Nothing in life is free". Rethink the concept of free, anon. Many things are effectively free for those at the top of society, like speeding tickets. Wouldn't it be fairer if speeding fines were a percentage of income to provide a real deterrent for those born rich? They do this in scandanavia, forget where. There was a famous case there of a millionaire who got caught driving dangerously in a car that cost the same as a family home. He got a fine of a couple of hundred thousand dollars instead of a couple of hundred. "Life isn't fair". Life is extremely fair for people at the top of society. They have laws to make sure of this, like the laws against unfair insider trading.

Cat Mother · 2022-06-02 23:45
>>60358 woops sorry my reading comprehension is bad at 3AM Tutanota still provides fully functional free accounts last time I checked. You may need to try a few different VPN IPs since I think they block Tor registration. Runbox.com worked after refreshing Tor circuit a few times. >>60394 >What is a "real" IP address? The one you got from your ISP. Why play dumb? Those "protonmail" guys do their best to get that address of yours logged when you sign up. Should you manage to hide the address, they won't allow you to proceed until you give them some phone number. They most definitely don't want you to stay anonymous for some reason. Given that OP is looking for a phone-free service, it seems to me that he wants to keep his real identity in secret. So that protonmail piece of crap might not be a good option for him.
Judge Fang · 2022-06-03 10:12
>>60385 >It requires you to provide your real IP address though. If you try signing up over tor you'll be asked a phone number. You can register protonmail through Tor without a phone if you have a reputable email address to verify with. I haven't found any email providers that allow Tor and no verification at all. But there are some that allow Tor+proxy and no verification. Then you can use that to get a protonmail account through Tor. It might also vary from time to time. If they're getting a lot of spam they might disable registration through Tor for a while. That might explain why different people have different experiences. >>60342 >How about postman.i2p ? Is this not a bittorrent tracker. >>60474 >why is everyone being so mean??? >>60411 started it. Don't be a jerk if you can't handle the responses.
Wintermute · 2022-06-03 12:15
>>60487 Thanks for the recs, will try them. From memory, tutanota accounts are crippled for a period after registration. Here's another example of a company wasting the time of people who don't want to enable 2FA through their phone number: Github insist on a new device verification code each login unless 2FA is enabled, and they will only activate new accounts when they are associated with email addresses from large providers like gmail/proton/outlook. Insisting on privacy now seems to give these companies a license to waste your time.

>>60422 Speeding tickets are immoral anyway
Nameless · 2022-06-06 22:39
>>60494 >>60487 >>60314 I would not recommend Tutanota if you're a power user to be honest, if all you are looking for as an email address you can get without a phone number OK but there are probably other options that are less frictive and annoying to use. The encrypted email thing is really appealing on the surface but nobody uses Encrypted emails so its worthless 99% of the time as all encrypted email schemes are, including when you've sent an encrypted message to someone that forwards it to someone that then forwards your message contents and attachments in clear text to 20 people on a mailing list. I bought a premium account with them and while the service is OK there's little real world advantage to using Tutanota over any other premium provider and some big drawbacks. Their client is not great, has very limited features (you can't even mark everything in a folder read for example), their calendar is clunky as fuarrrk and doesn't integrate with anything at all, the customization options for creating templates etc. are garbage, their domains get caught in spam filters a lot, they're quite slow pushing out new features and they aren't amazing at community communication. The service is "fine" its a stable email provider, but I will probably migrate to self hosted rather than renewing my subscription next year Secure email is an oxymoron, the system wasn't designed for it.
H.R. Giger · 2022-06-13 10:48
>>60551 No, speeding tickets that aren't a deterrent to the rich are immoral. Speeding tickets that equally target rich and poor, maybe using a public and open algorithm, are probably necessary to stop soykafs like me driving too fast. Thanks for all the recs folks, one of them worked out for me.
Pogmaster69 · 2022-06-16 17:34
>>60333 >>60335 Even more painfully, they pretend that they're collecting your phone number for purposes other than deanonymization: >we only save a cryptographic hash of your email or phone number which is not permanently associated with the account that you create >it is impossible to derive your phone number or email from that hash >However, using the same phone number will result in obtaining the same cryptographic hash >So by comparing hashes, we can detect if phone numbers or email addresses are reused "not permanently associated" is a huge, load-bearing leap of faith, and given that they're pretending that phone numbers can't be brute-forced (assuming the Schweizer Nachrichtendienste doesn't already have the corresponding rainbow table), which is tantamount to lying, I see no reason to trust them on the leap-of-faith bit https://crypto.stackexchange.com/questions/84520#comment187016_84523
Pogmaster69 · 2022-06-16 17:36
That said, for OP's purposes, if there are any local cafes not ratelimited by protonmail's account-creation API yet, you could always just spend a burner laptop on that
Marly Krushkhova · 2022-06-17 21:29
If you don't need to be able to receive replies, then it would be pretty simple to write a script that starts a temporary mail server on your machine, sends the email, and then shuts down the temp server. You could run the script through torsocks, although I'll admit I don't know what kind of security risks this approach would potentially have beyond that.
